PENTECOST SUNDAY: RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT Taken from Father José Antonio Pagola: Come Creator Spirit and infuse in us the strength and the breath of Jesus. Without your impulse and your grace, we will not be able to believe in him; we will not dare to follow in his footsteps; the Church will not be renewed; our hope will go out. Come and tell us the vital breath of Jesus! Come Holy Spirit and remind us of the good words that Jesus said. Without your light and your testimony about him, we will forget the good face of God; the Gospel will become a dead letter; the Church will not be able to announce any good news. Come and teach us to listen to Jesus only! Come Spirit of Truth and make us walk in the truth of Jesus. Without your light and your guidance, we will never be free from our mistakes and lies; nothing new and true will be born among us; we will be like blind people who try to guide other blind people. Come and become disciples and witnesses of Jesus! Come Spirit of the Father and teach us to shout to God "Abba" as Jesus did. Without your warmth and your joy, we will live like orphans who have lost their Father; we will invoke God with our lips, but not with our hearts; our prayers will be empty words. Come and teach us to pray with the words and the heart of Jesus! Come Good Spirit and convert us to the project of the "kingdom of God" inaugurated by Jesus. Without your renewing force, nobody will turn our hearts tired; we will not have the audacity to build a more human world, according to God's wishes; in your Church the last will never be the first; and we will continue to be asleep in our bourgeois religion. Come and make us collaborators of Jesus' project! Come Spirit of Love and teach us to love one another with the love with which Jesus loved. Without your living presence among us, the communion of the Church will be broken; the hierarchy and the people will go away more and more; Divisions will grow, dialogue will be quenched and intolerance will increase. Come and fan in our hearts and hands the fraternal love that makes us look like Jesus! Come Liberating Spirit and remind us that to be free Christ freed us and not to let us oppress again for slavery. Without your strength and your truth, our joyful following of Jesus will become the moral of slaves; we will not know the love that gives life, but our egoisms that kill it; the freedom that makes the sons and daughters of God grow will be extinguished in us and we will be, again and again, victims of fears, cowardice and fanaticism. Come Holy Spirit and tell us the freedom of Jesus! I personally want to ask the Lord to send His Spirit and renew us as a Church that wants to be united, sharing our gifts and desiring to be a evangelizing people, empowered and sent by God. We are almost finishing our 150th Anniversary, so much to be grateful for, remember our theme: “We are not what we were, nor what we shall

Christ is alive: Synthesis of the Apostolic Exhortation - Part VI

Chapter 5: Paths of Youth

“The love of God and our relationship with the living Christ do not hold us back from dreaming; they do not require us to narrow our horizons. On the contrary, that love elevates us, encourages us and inspires us to a better and more beautiful life. Much of the longing present in the hearts of young people can be summed up in the word ‘restlessness’” (138). Thinking of a young person, the Pope sees him or her as someone “who wants to fly on their two feet, always with one foot forward, ready to set out, to spring ahead. Always racing onward” (139). Youth cannot remain “on hold”, because it is the “age of choice” in the professional, social, political spheres, and also in the choice of the partner or in having one’s first children. “Anxiety can work against us by making us give up whenever we do not see instant results. Our best dreams are only attained through hope, patience and commitment, and not in haste. At the same time, we should not be hesitant, afraid to take chances or make mistakes” (142). Pope Francis invites young people not to observe life from the balcony, not to spend their lives in front of a screen, not to be reduced to abandoned vehicles and not to look at the world as tourists: “Make a ruckus! Cast out the fears that paralyze you…live!” (143) He invites them to “live the present” enjoying with gratitude every little gift of life without “being insatiable” and “obsessively seeking new pleasures” (146). In fact, living the present “is not the same as embarking irresponsibly on a life of dissipation that can only leave us empty and perpetually dissatisfied” (147).

“No matter how much you live the experience of these years of your youth, you will never know their deepest and fullest meaning unless you encounter each day your best friend, the friend who is Jesus” (150) Friendship with Him is indissoluble because He does not abandon us (154). “With a friend, we can speak and share our deepest secrets. With Jesus too, we can always have a conversation”. When we pray, “we open everything we do” to him, and we give him room “so that He can act, enter and claim victory” (155). “Do not deprive your youth of this friendship. You will be able to feel him at your side”. That is what the disciples of Emmaus experienced (156). Saint Oscar Romero said: “Christianity is not a collection of truths to be believed, rules to be followed, or prohibitions. Seen that way, it puts us off. Christianity is a person who loved me immensely, who demands and asks for my love. Christianity is Christ”.

The Pope, speaking of growth and maturity, indicates the importance of seeking “a spiritual development”, of “seeking the Lord and keeping his Word”, of maintaining the “connection” with Jesus... since you will not grow happy and holy by your own efforts and intelligence alone” (158).

“El amor de Dios y nuestra relación con el Cristo vivo no nos impiden soñar; No nos obligan a estrechar nuestros horizontes. Gran parte del anhelo presente en los corazones de los jóvenes puede resumirse en la palabra "inquietud" (138). Pensando en una persona joven, el Papa lo ve como alguien que "quiere volar sobre sus dos pies, siempre con un pie hacia adelante, listo para partir, para saltar hacia adelante. Siempre corriendo hacia adelante ”(139). Los jóvenes no pueden permanecer "en espera", porque es la "edad de elección" en los ámbitos profesional, social, político y también en la elección de la pareja o en tener los primeros hijos. "La ansiedad puede actuar contra nosotros al hacernos rendirnos cuando no vemos resultados instantáneos. Nuestros mejores sueños solo se alcanzan a través de la esperanza, la paciencia y el compromiso, y no a toda prisa. Al mismo tiempo, no debemos dudar, temer correr riesgos o cometer errores ”(142). El Papa Francisco invita a los jóvenes a no observar la vida desde el balcón, a pasar la vida frente a una pantalla, a no ser reducido a vehículos abandonados y a no mirar al mundo como turistas: “¡Haz un alboroto! Expulsa los miedos que te paralizan ... ¡vive! ”(143) Los invita a “vivir el presente ”disfrutando con gratitud cada pequeño regalo de la vida sin “ser insaciable” y “buscar obsesivamente nuevos placeres”(146). De hecho, vivir el presente "no es lo mismo que embarcarse de manera irresponsable en una vida de disipación que solo puede dejarnos vacíos y perpetuamente insatisfechos" (147). "No importa cuánto vivas en la experiencia de estos años de tu juventud, nunca conocerás su significado más profundo y completo a menos que encuentres cada día a tu mejor amigo, el amigo que es Jesús" (150). La amistad con Él es indisoluble porque Él No nos abandona (154). “Con un amigo, podemos hablar y compartir nuestros secretos más profundos. Con Jesús también, siempre podemos tener una conversación". Cuando oramos, "le abrimos todo lo que hacemos" y le damos espacio "para que Él pueda actuar, entrar y reclamar la victoria" (155). “No prives a tu juventud de esta amistad. Podrás sentirlo a tu lado”. Eso es lo que experimentaron los discípulos de Emaús (156). San Oscar Romero dijo: “El cristianismo no es una colección de verdades que hay que creer, reglas que deben seguirse o prohibiciones. Visto de esa manera, nos desanima. El cristianismo es una persona que me amó inmensamente, que exige y pide mi amor. El cristianismo es Cristo”. El Papa, hablando de crecimiento y madurez, indica la importancia de buscar "un desarrollo espiritual", de "buscar al Señor y guardar su Palabra", de mantener la "conexión" con Jesús ... ya que no crecerás feliz y santo. solo por tu propio esfuerzo e inteligencia”(158).

Sacrament of Marriage For a marriage ceremony at St. John the Baptist or Our Lady of Good Counsel, arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least 1 year before the wedding date. The diocesan Marriage Preparation or “Pre-Cana” classes are presented in English, Spanish, Creole, Polish and Italian. The Diocese of Brooklyn have specialized Pre-Cana for Interfaith/Interchurch couples, for couples who are re-marrying and for couples who are convalidating their civil unions. HOLY SACRAMENTS

Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

Children’s Faith Formation ages 7 yrs. to 15 yrs. (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) Our Children’s Faith Formation program provides preparation of the Holy Sacraments for children. The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

Anointing of the sick Call (718) 455-6864 to make arrangements for the sick person to receive Holy Communion or the Anointing of the Sick at home.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) (Becoming a Catholic)

Are you baptized? Have you received First Holy Communion? Are you Confirmed? Adults and youth at least 16 yrs. of age seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church are invited to enter into a process of faith formation. RCIA classes are all year round.

LOS SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para bebes nacimiento a 6 años

Los bautismos para bebes se celebran el primer domingo de cada mes. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo. Padres o Padrinos, traiga el certificado de nacimiento original del niño a la oficina principal donde pueden comenzar el proceso de inscripción para este hermoso sacramento.

Formación de Fe para Niños 7 años hasta 15 años (Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación) El programa de formación de fe para nuestros niños se prepara los niños para sus Sacramentos. El programa sigue las Directrices Diocesanas para el Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Niños. Las horas para las clases son domingo, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Confirmación de Pentecostés 16 años y adelante ¿Se ha bautizado y recibido la Primera Comunión pero no ha completado el Sacramento de la Confirmación y tiene más de 16 años de edad? Nuestro programa de Confirmación solo comienza en enero en preparación para la Confirmación de Pentecostés típicamente en mayo o junio.

Sacramento de los enfermos Llame a (718) 455-6864 para hacer arreglos para que el enfermo reciba la Santa Comunión o la Unción de los Enfermos en su casa.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos: R.I.C.A. (Convertirse Católico)

¿Está bautizado? ¿Has recibido la Primera Comunión? ¿Está Confirmado? Se invita a los adultos y jóvenes 16 años y adelante, que buscan la iniciación completa en la Iglesia Católica para entrar en un proceso de formación de fe. Las clases de R.I.C.A. son todo el año.
