September October 2014 Publication of The Charismatic Renewal Cleveland, Ohio Continued on Page 6 similar to that of the disci- ples during the Transfigura- tion: a momentary foretaste of what will constitute the happiness of paradise” (03/12/2006). For this reason I think our charism is not only the grace of Pentecost, but also the grace of the Transfiguration. In my experience of this I like to call it a “glimpse of heaven.” You are probably aware of a phrase that some people say when they are extremely happy about something. They say, “I thought I died and went to heaven.” I realize that everyone’s experi- ence is different, but when I was baptized in the Holy Spirit I thought I remained alive and went to heaven. I would think that those of us who have been touched by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal have, on occasion, received a “glimpse of heaven.” Perhaps it was in a prayer time, or at Mass, or in a time of praise in a prayer meeting, or when alone, looking up at the stars. And I am just like Peter, James and John at the Transfiguration. I want to stay there and build a house and never leave. But then, it is only a glimpse of heaven. The best is yet to come. So I find in my life that these moments don’t last for as long as I would like but they are a powerful motivator to keep me moving toward becoming more and more like Je- sus. These experiences of the work of the Holy Spirit are only a down payment of what is yet to come. What if I don’t have experiences like this? We still have many glimpses of heaven. At Mass, when the priest elevates the host for us to adore, it is a glimpse of heaven. When we see a newborn baby, it is another glimpse of heaven. When we see someone (hopefully ourselves) serving the poor, there it is again. Although we may have experiences where we feel great joy, it is not the feeling that is the gift. The gift is that ability to recognize it for what it is, a glimpse of heaven. The gift is the action of the Holy Spirit in our life whether we feel good about it or not. Jesus says, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (Jn 16:7). I have been asked to con- sider the question, “What is the charism of the Charis- matic Renewal?” How does one look at all of the tre- mendous gifts and blessings we have received in this move of the Holy Spirit and narrow it down to “the” charism of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal? Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa points out that being baptized in the Holy Spirit is at the core of the Renewal. On January13, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI said, “Christ’s entire mission is summed up in this: to baptize us in the Holy Spirit.” Again on May 11, 2008, in his Pentecost message Pope Benedict said, “Today I would like to extend this invitation to everyone: let us, dear brothers and sisters, rediscover the beauty of being baptized in the Holy Spirit; let us be aware again of our baptism and of our confirmation, sources of grace that are always present.” The National Service Committee includes in its mission statement that one of our ma- jor charisms is to bring the baptism in the Holy Spirit into the heart of the Church. How many lives have been transformed by this wonderful experi- ence? This is certainly a significant gift for us to foster in the Church. But I would like to look at things from a different point of view. How does one take all the blessings of the Catho- lic Charismatic Renewal and narrow it down to what we would call “the” charism of the Renewal? Many possibilities could be cited. Consider the great vari- ety of ways in which the Holy Spirit has enriched us through the Charismatic Renewal. We could mention a significant gift for praise and worship, for exam- ple. What about the number of people among us who have received healing. Then there is the gift of tongues, which Fr. Cantalamessa once referred to as vocalized contemplation. I know that this gift has transformed my prayer life. Many more blessings could be cited. I think it would be reasonable to say that the charism of the Catholic Charismatic Re- newal is constantly developing, manifesting itself in many and varied ways. Again, if I may quote Pope Benedict, he also said, “When one has the grace to sense a strong experi- ence of God, it is as if one is living an experience

September & October 2014 Dear Readers of the Flame, The Lord reigns. This is not a passive statement. We be-lieve that God is active in the world, reaching out in power and love to make known his saving grace. I write these words from the critical care unit at Southwest General Hospital. My mother, Dorothy, came here eleven days ago through the emergency room. After a number of diagnostic tests it was determined that she needed emer-gency abdominal surgery. The Lord reigns. There were a number of circumstances that highlighted God’s providential care. First, my older sister was in town when this event took place. She and her husband interrupted their multi-month long boat trip to par-ticipate in a grandchild’s baptism in the Cleveland area the day that my mother was taken to the ER. Her presence has been a great comfort to my mother during this ordeal. Another “God-incident” had to do with the surgeon. The ER nurse mentioned that the doctor who would be performing the surgery was Dr. Craig Eyman. The name immediately rang a bell. For many years a member of the Cleveland expression of Fraternity of Priests had been Byzantine priest named Fr. Bryan Eyman. He is currently serving a parish in Indianapolis, Indiana. So I gave Fr. Bryan a call and discovered that Dr. Craig Eyman is his brother. The Lord reigns. And yet sometimes it is harder to see the hand of the Lord at work. In the eleven days that have tran-spired since my mother’s surgery, we have had moments of great hope and other moments of desolation. Though the surgery was a success, the after effects to my 87 year mother have been debilitating. Her lungs and heart have not recovered in the same way as her abdomen. She has not been able to be weaned from the machines that assist her breathing. She will be going into hospice this week and preparing for a happy death. Ultimately, we believe that Jesus is Lord of the living and the dead (Romans 14:9). The manner of our death and its day is not of our choosing. How we live using the time we are given-herein lays the choices that make all the differ-ence in the world. Let us pray to make good choices! May our first choice always be faith! “And without faith, it is impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) In our skeptical age, may we gratefully live for Jesus Christ as proclaimed by the Church. And let us choose to hope in Christ. So many of our hopes are “earth-based”. They are fleeting, meaningless and

sometimes detrimental to the unfading promise of heaven. (I Peter 1:4) Jesus promised to prepare a place and that he will come and take us to himself (John 14:1-6). Let us never let go of our true hope! Finally, let us choose to love. This is the command of the Lord (John 13:34-35) It means serving those who are part of the fabric of our lives, expressing our gratitude to and for them, forgiving any and all who have hurt or offended us in any way and praying for God’s blessings to be upon them. May we never forget that the Lord truly does reign. I pray that we all have eyes to see his providential hand at work in our lives. I pray especially that in those dark moments we may actively:

reaffirm our faith in the mercy and promises of Christ

reaffirm our hope in the heaven he promises reaffirm our love for each other

In this way, we will come to know that God really does reign. Thy Kingdom Come! In Christ, Fr. Bob Franco
