TIGERS LAIRready forready for

renovationsrenovationsIt has given as good a service to Claremont as Moloney, Marshall, Moss and Medhurst.

But eventually every good recruit reaches his use-by date.

This week the Tigers faithful will farewell one of its most loyal and valuable entities when the club hosts the WAFL second semi-final against West Perth.

Claremont Oval is undergoing a major renovation. Indeed, just like it did when the then Claremont-Cottesloe moved to the ground 86 years ago, the Tigers are building a home for a bright future.

The grandstand, administration headquarters and changerooms will all be renovated as Tigerland gets turned into a multi-use facility that can meet the demands of the new sporting era.

It was much the same back in 1926 when the club was first admitted to the State’s premier football competition.

However, the state of Claremont Oval is far better today than what was encountered more than three generations ago.

The club was fortunate to receive £5000 from the local council to redevelop the “Claremont Recreation Ground”.

As Kevin Casey wrote in the club’s historical record, The Tigers’ Tale, the venue “was a rather primitive, undeveloped area that contained in the middle a soccer pitch which was used by the successful Claremont Soccer Club in the winter and a cricket pitch that was home to Claremont-Cottesloe Cricket Club during the summer.

“There was no fence around the playing arena and on the eastern side of the ground, between the pitches and the Showgrounds, wild flowers and native shrubs grew in profusion.

“The remaining area was basically a sandy wasteland. The Claremont Council was going to need every bit of its £5000 to bring the ground up to the standard of the home grounds of the other clubs.”

Claremont rallied to make the area their home. A year later a stand, administrative base and changerooms were added to entrench the Tigers – or the Riversiders as they were also called at the time – in the WAFL.

Now the club is faced with a similar predicament. Its facilities need an overhaul and with the approval of respective governments, Claremont will soon enjoy a brilliant new facility. And the ground will be rejuvenated to embrace the community.

The Tigers will be keen to claim one last win to commemorate the passing of an old friend and the welcoming of a new one.

South Bunbury just don’t play hard. The club campaigns just as fi ercely off the ground as well.

The South West Football League giants have earned plenty of success in 114 seasons. This year they had an early win courtesy of a nation-wide football competition.

This week it was confirmed South Bunbury was the victor in the Fox Footy Club Rewards Program.

The broadcaster threw out the challenge to local clubs to obtain as many new Foxtel subscriptions as they could in a season.

There are plenty linked to South Bunbury that like to watch football as much as playing and the club was presented with a major award for reaching almost 300 new sign ups.

The rewards scheme is based on a three-tiered program, with the first two tiers rewarding clubs with footballs, training jumpers, medical kits and strapping tape.

But South Bunbury went one step further and 12 of the club’s finest clubmen travelled to Perth last Saturday for an exclusive function involving the Fox Footy commentators before the game between West Coast and Adelaide at Patersons Stadium.

Keeping eye on the ball pays off

The South Bunbury team also enjoyed a money-can’t-buy, behind the scenes experience before the game at Patersons courtesy of Fox Footy.

“The Tigers has invested a huge amount of time and effort into the program recording

289 Foxtel subscriptions, allowing us to pass Tier three. It’s a true credit to the club’s loyal fans and supporters and we’re thankful to Foxtel and Fox Footy for allowing us to participate,” said club director Shane Horner.

Members of the South Bunbury Football Club together with FOX FOOTY commentators Dermott Brereton, Tony Shaw, Matthew Campbell and Barry Hall.

WAFL fans can take one last look at Claremont Oval before it undergoes a major redevelopment.

The East Perth forward had enough goals in the bank by round 23 to claim the Bernie Naylor Medal.

Smith added four goals to his tally in the final round to finish on 62. Perth’s Paul Bevan was on the next line with 55 goals.

It is the first time since Troy Wilson (74 goals) in 2006 that a Royals player has taken the honour.

And it is the lowest tally to win a Bernie Naylor Medal since East Fremantle’s Rod Tregenza booted 55 goals in 1999.

The challengers have had time to catch East Fremantle’s Ryan Lester-Smith in the quest for one of the WAFL’s coveted awards.

But whether they have been able to reel in the Shark won’t be known for a few more weeks.

When voting for the 2013 WAFL Combined Past Players and Officials Rising Star award went in-camera four weeks ago week, Lester-Smith held a comfortable lead in the prize.

However, Lester-Smith won’t add to his tally this season after going down with a serious knee injury.

Player of the Year

There has been movement at the top of the leaderboard for one of the WAFL’s major player prizes.

But just who has done what remains as mystery as voting for the 2013 Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year award has gone in-camera.

At the time of the secret judging four players – Claremont pair Andrew Foster and Jake Murphy plus East Perth teammates Paul Johnson and Brendan Lee – shared the lead in the award.

The winner of the Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year award receives a prize to the value of $1500. Final votes will be revealed during preliminary final week.

Claremont’s Matthew Davies and Sam Fong were trying to cut down Lester-Smith’s dominance.

To be eligible players must have notched eight games or less at the start of the 2013 season and be aged 21 years or under at the end of the season.

Votes do not need to be awarded.

The winner of the award will be announced during preliminary final week.

One of the real niche areas of collecting involves keeping the special programs produced by the WAFL clubs and, indeed, by the league.

I’ve previously written about the collectability of Sandover Medal presentation programs and Hall of Fame induction programs.

But the clubs have all held dozens of functions over the years, many of which were supported by a souvenir program. And they are also very collectable.

West Perth’s 1982 “An Evening with the Champions” program is one such example,

which covered the presentation evening for the club’s champion team of the 1950-1982 era.

There were also programs/menus for the separate Mel Whinnen and Bill Dempsey testimonial dinners and champagne breakfasts in 1976 and 1977 respectively.

And another for the Sportsmen’s dinner held as a testimonial evening for Polly Farmer back in 1971.

I have seen programs for annual balls for both South Fremantle and Perth, too.

So, what do Budget readers have in their collections? Send me an email if you have

anything of interest and I’ll feature a pile of readers’ items in next week’s Budget.

And now to the week’s sales, though the number of WAFL items on offer in recent weeks has not been particularly high.

The most interesting for this week was undoubtedly the Swan Districts jumper that I mentioned in last week’s Football Budget.

Probably dating to the 1960s, the number 15 guernsey could have been worn by Tony Sangalli in the early 1960s, Geoff McMurray in the mid-60s,

Trevor Netherway in 1967, Len Smith in 1968 or Wayne Faulkner in 1969. It could also have been worn by a reserves player between Sangalli and McMurray.

And, given the age of the jumper and the lack of provenance, it could be from the early 1970s or even a colts player’s jumper.

But that didn’t stop one keen collector from shelling out $1602 for it when the auction closed last Sunday.

This is a high price, but jumpers of this age are very rare. More importantly, it continues the recent trend of high sale prices for 1960s Swan Districts memorabilia. Regular readers might recall an original 1961 premiership team photo sold for more than $1000 earlier this year.

Page 11: OOFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE WAFLFFICIAL PUBLICATION …€¦ · oofficial publication of the waflfficial publication of the wafl ssemi-finals september 8, 2013 emi-finals september

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

11AWARDS

Another Swans jumper, this time from the early 1980s, was snapped up for $300 during the week, too. But a few club jumpers for other WAFL clubs were overlooked at that price.

Meanwhile, the price paid by one collector for a 1966 card featuring Barry Cable was absolutely ridiculous. The same Scanlens card, in which Cable is pictured in his Perth jumper, can be bought from card shops for well under $100 in the same condition.

But eight bidders pushed the price up to $356, which, if it were to be replicated at future auctions, would make the Cable die-cut card one of the most expensive in the set.

The 1966 Scanlens set is one of the most popular and is of great interest to West Australians because it features 12 WAFL player cards, along with 60 VFL player cards, in the set.

If you have designs on this set, I suggest you buy the entire set in one hit. The last set I saw sold in immaculate condition for $2000 – about $27 per card.

And the final sale item for this week is a 1986 program from the game between Essendon and East Fremantle, which sold for $38. I’ve found it more difficult to find than the Subiaco v Hawthorn game from the same season, so keep an eye out for it.

The big surprise to me, though, was that a book on WA wildflowers which had been signed by more than a dozen VFL and WAFL officials in 1951 failed to sell at the $25 reserve price.

Finally for this week, I have a few items I would like to see and am hoping Budget readers might be able to help.

First is a 1977 State of Origin football, which I believe was sold at Charlie Carters in the lead-up to that memorable game. I have a low-quality photo, but no other details.

Next are any sets of crockery stamped with a WAFL club logo. I’ve seen the old crockery down at East Fremantle, which was apparently used in the restaurant, and I’ve also seen some Claremont crockery. But there must have been others?

And, last but not least, I would like to document all the pennants which were made for the finals back in the 1960s and 1970s. The pennants, usually made of thin material and glued to a small wooden “stick”, were pretty popular back in the those days.

Generally, they wer e made for the grand final teams, but I have seen some for sides which didn’t make the premiership decider.

First semi-finalEAST PERTH V WEST PERTH

Steel Blue Oval

East Perth is set for another do or die semi-final this Sunday, this time in the reserves against West Perth.

The Falcons have stayed in control of the derby match ups this season, winning two out of three with the Royals’ lone win coming in the opening round of the year and by just two points.

Rowan Brookes and Shaquille McKenzie could cause trouble for the Falcons with the pair combining for nine goals last week, giving the Royals a focal point for their attack though they have been able to find scoring from a range of different options.

The Falcons will need to take care of the ball inside their forward 50 and keep their inaccuracies down, making the Royals work to maintain defensive pressure.

Frank Stockley could prove to be a difference maker for the Falcons should he line up for reserves, amassing 132 hit outs and 55 disposals in his last three games, and could give the Falcons a strong force in the centre of the ground.

East Perth’s Tyson Rudd, Jackson Slater and Lewis Wilson could line up for their 50th WAFL games while West Perth’s Cameron Branch is also set to play his 50th.

First semi-finalPERTH V SUBIACO

Steel Blue Oval

For a while this season Perth looked unbeatable in the colts competition.

The Demons enjoyed an 11-game winning streak across mid-season that put the club in the box seat for a second semi-final berth. Unfortunately, a couple of hiccups late in the season pushed Perth to third.

However, Jordan Leeson, Hayden Busher and Brent Edmonds have shown that when in good form, Wayne Langbourne’s line-up is a formidable opposition.

But stopping goals will be the key for the Demons.

Subiaco features the colts’ leading goalkicker Rhys McAlister, who slotted through 52 in the home-and-away rounds.

The Lions could also regain Michael Wood following his solid performances at league level late in the season.

When the teams met previously, in round the Demons emerged victorious by 48 points. Marshall Walker kicked four goals for the winners.

Second semi-finalPERTH V SOUTH FREMANTLE

Claremont Oval

With mere percentage points separating the top three teams both Perth and South Fremantle will want the extra week’s rest and a guaranteed shot at the premiership.

Despite finishing first, the Demons limped into the finals with just one win in the last five games, while the Bulldogs have finished the regular season full of drive with five wins in the same time.

The Bulldogs could field a host of players with league finals experience including Shaun Bewick and Reece Adams though it may be their younger contingent led by Kaiden Matera, reserves leading goal kicker, who will make the most difference.

While the two teams split their earlier season games, the Demons and Bulldogs met just last week in a lopsided affair with the Bulldogs coming out 91 point winners.

The Demons have been unable to find consistent scoring, despite kicking accurately, and Matt Hunt will need to be able to lift his team and set the pace from the midfield across the ground, though the Demons will need to be able to use Hunt to create space through the middle and find scoring options.

Perth’s Simon Donovan and Cameron Manuel are set to play their 50th WAFL games.

Second semi-finalCLAREMONT V SOUTH FREMANTLE

Claremont Oval

To put it simply, scoring against Claremont this season has been a major struggle for opposition teams.

The Tigers conceded just 50 points per match as they suffocated 18 of the 20 teams they encountered. They finished with a percentage of 180.17.

Claremont has a wealth of talent in the back half and Timm House, Mason Whitehead, Harry Taylor, and Bailey Rogers have all played key roles during the course of the season in keeping the pressure on their rivals..

South Fremantle, which finished the regular rounds with a 15-5 season, was one of the teams to knock off the minor premier in 2013. And the Tigers won the two other matches by two and 15 points.

The Bulldogs will again look to Bailey Matera, Jacob Dragovich and Matthew Ah Siu to test the Tigers’ resolve.

Callum Ah Chee has also given South Fremantle some sting in attack.

South Fremantle is the reigning colts premier.

LEAGUE PREVIEWS

CLAREMONT V WEST PERTH

Claremont Oval

After suffering just its third WAFL loss of the season, Claremont has a chance to play for a third straight flag but has West Perth to dispose of before dreaming of another grand final.

All the evidence favours the Tigers. Luke Blackwell, after missing much of the season because of a lower leg injury, has regained match fitness and returned to his peak. Fellow midfielders Jake Murphy and Andrew Foster have been just as damaging. Ruck pair Mark Seaby and Mitch Andrews have formed formidable team. And Ian Richardson has become a livewire in attack.

And West Perth doesn’t exactly enter the finals brimming with confidence following two losses to finish the home-and-away rounds.

SWAN DISTRICTS V EAST PERTH

Steel Blue Oval

Swan Districts and East Perth have picked the right time to play some of their best football of the season.

Both teams come into the semi-final with a degree of momentum on their side, the Swans with four wins in their past five games and the Royals with three in four.

During the run to the finals the Royals again showed how dangerous they are in front of goal with Josh Smith, Paul Johnson and now Mat Seal having an impact.

Yet it is East Perth’s ability to turn defence into attack that will be a focal point for the Swans match committee.

Aaron Sweet, Freddie Clutterbuck, Brendan Lee, when able to get behind the ball, and veteran Craig Wulff are the keys

Daniel Leishman

However, finals can be different sporting beasts. The good thing for Falcons fans is that if Mark Hutchings, Rohan Kerr, Shane Nelson and Matt Guadagnin can combine efficiently – and if Chris Keunen can provide a challenge in the ruck – then the red and blue army can hold hope of victory.

Despite winning both meetings with the Falcons this year, the Tigers have been pushed through all four quarters with West Perth able to keep the result within reach in both games.

Dan Hunt is set to line up for his 150th career game in his ninth season with the Falcons.

to many of East Perth’s surges into attack.

But the Royals can also expect to have their hands full on the defensive side.

Tim Geappen, Dayle Garlett, Ryan Davis and Tony Notte are capable of keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

East Perth was able to get one up on Swans in July, using its ruck advantage to lead at every change and keep black and whites leading goal kicker Tim Geappen to just one behind, only the second time this year he hasn’t scored a major.

The hard-working Aaron Elari has settled into an important component of the black-and-whites midfield. His willingness to fight for the ball could be crucial in this do-or-die affair.

CBC Fremantle claim Year 8/9 schoolboys crown

WAFC

In what was frantic fi nish to the Year8/9 Schoolboys Cup at Patersons Stadium on Saturday afternoon, CBC Fremantle emerged victorious in an epic battle with Darling Range Sports College.

In blustery conditions on the big stage both teams traded goals early and CBC held a handy nine-point lead at the long break.

The contest went up a notch in the second half, with the margin never being more than two goals for the remainder of the game. CBC hung on for a memorable nine-point victory defeating Darling Range 9.10 (64) to 8.7 (55).

Shannon Hurn was on hand from West Coast to present the Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup and medallions to the players, coaches and umpires.

Ambrose Ryan (CBC Fremantle) and Jai Woods (Darling Range) were presented with the special WCE match balls in recognition of being the best players for their respective schools in the grand final. The Ross Davis Medal was awarded to Aiden Zindani from CBC Fremantle for his outstanding contributions throughout the competition.

Since the competition’s inception in 1983, the Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup has grown to become WA’s premier lower school football competition with 5000 students from over 180 schools competing this year.

One of the major directions of the WA Football Commission and School Sport WA was to utilise the competition to re-establish Australian football into all secondary schools.

Over the years football has provided the vehicle where values like loyalty, teamwork, respect, leadership, mateship, endeavour and integrity are taught. Both teams demonstrated these qualities in a highly skilled display and in true sportsman-like manner.

WAFC Schools Completions Manager Clayton Anderson said the WAFC greatly appreciated the support received from new program partners West Coast and School Sport WA for the contribution of the Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup.

“On behalf of the Commission I would also like to sincerely thank those teachers who gave up their time to coach a school football team in the 2013 Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup competition,” Anderson said.

Grand fi nal winners: The CBC team celebrates its premiership.

Three decades and 750 games later

Football certainly throws up its fair share of dedicated participants who commit their time, energy and love to our great game.

One person who has done this for 30 years is Swan Districts junior umpire Manager Sav Borg.

Borg has been a tireless worker, coach, mentor, and parent figure for hundreds of young aspiring umpires over three decades. But after the 2013 season, he will be stepping aside to spend more time with his wife and young family.

Borg said it was a hard decision, with umpiring being such a large part of his life.

“Umpiring has given me a great deal, with nothing more important than the strong relationships and lifelong friends,” he said.

“I also take great pride in working with and watching the development of young players and umpires progressing through juniors, WAFL and AFL.”

Borg said he would leave reassured that the Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association was in a great position with strong numbers, a clear talent pathway, positive match day environments, and a close link between the umpires, the clubs and the competition.

He is held in high regard and has acted in many roles in football, touching a number of different market sectors including junior umpire districts, umpire development squads, AFL little league, umpiring committees and junior football clubs.

Borg’s journey started as a player with the Bassendean Junior Football Club in 1978 but

Long serving umpire Sav Borg.

it was in 1984 that his real passion for football was found when he joined the Swan Districts Junior Football Umpires Association.

He has gone on to umpire over 750 games in the Swans District and many more across other competitions.

Borg’s involvement in umpiring is not only recognised by the number of games he has done but by the amount of time and effort he has put into coaching umpires of the future.

His main goal has been to develop tomorrow’s umpires today and share in their enthusiasm and excitement as they not only develop as umpires but as individuals.

Borg said umpiring had provided him with essential life skills at a very young age including effective communication, decision making and leadership, which helped him in his working life as a senior bank employee.

He thanked the West Australian Football Commission, Swan Districts Football Club, WAFC Umpiring and the Swans District Junior Football Umpires Association for being an important part of his journey.

Borg was awarded one of WA’s highest umpire recognition awards in 2011 recognising his outstanding contribution and service to umpiring and football and there is no doubt he will be sorely missed.

The WAFL Colts Coaches Award went to joint winners for the fi rst time at the conclusion of home and away fi xtures last weekend.

South Fremantle’s Jacob Dragovich and Perth’s Brent Edmonds were both judged best on ground in five games and polled votes in nine matches overall to tally 22 for the season.

The Colts Coaches’ Award was instituted in 2004 to recognise and encourage talented players in the Colts competition.

This award provides the Colts Coaches with the opportunity to vote for their best players. Opposing Colts Coaches meet after each game to award votes on a 3-2-1 voting system.

26 AMATEUR FOOTBALL

One last chance for premiership hopefuls

By Sophie James

THE WA Amateur Football League finals series continues this weekend with 54 teams battling it out for a spot in grand finals next weekend.

For West Coast Cowan and Scarborough who play in the B Grade preliminary final, a win would mean a spot against Kalamunda in the premiership-decider and automatic promotion to the A Grade next season.

But, before either side can think of promotion, they must first face off for what will be the fourth time for the year, this time at Millington Reserve.

Scarborough will head into the match as favourite and full of confidence having defeated West Coast Cowan two from three times throughout the season.

In round four West Coast Cowan won its first encounter at Millington Reserve, but Scarborough looked to settle the score in round 13 beating their rivals at City Beach by 35 points.

In the qualifying final at Millington Reserve just two weeks ago, Scarborough extended its winning margin to 45 to stamp its dominance in this season’s finals.

West Coast Cowan won’t be without hope, however, having beaten North Fremantle by 28 points in the first semi-final.

This weekend will also feature the C1 preliminary final with first against third - Quinns District set to take on Mosman Park at Wanneroo Showgrounds.

After facing their first loss of the season to Canning South Perth in the second semi-final last weekend, Quinns will be looking to come back strong and secure a spot in the grand final.

Quinns have had the wood on Mosman Park this year – finishing two above on the ladder and defeating their opponents the three times they have met, but Quinns’ recent loss against Canning South Perth last week will give Mosman Park the confidence it might be able to cause the upset.

The winner of the match will earn promotion to B Grade next season and will go through to the grand final against Canning South Perth next Saturday, September 14.

Also fighting for a spot in a grand final are Wesley Curtin and University, who meet in the A Grade second Semi Final at UWA Sports Park.

While the loser will get another chance if they lose, the winner will head straight through to the A Grade grand final on September 22.

University has been the form team of the competition for the entire season in A Grade, finishing on top of the ladder, but with Wesley Curtin also in fine form the weekend’s game will be one not to miss.

Intrigue also surrounds the A Grade first semi final, as North Beach go head to head with Swan Athletic at MacDonald Reserve.

Following on from 2012 North Beach again finished in third but will be desperate to record a finals win and avoid going out in straight sets after losing last weeks’ qualifying final to Wesley Curtin.

To record that win they must beat Swan Athletic, which finished fifth, and which

has just knocked Trinity Aquinas out of premiership contention in the elimination final by 23 points at Bill Grayden Reserve.

If they can take a win against Swan Athletic and make it to the Preliminary Final there is no telling how far their finals experience can take them.

Following the weekend games and before the grand finals, players and special guests will get the chance to celebrate the season at the WA Amateur Football League’s Medal Presentation Dinner.

More than 850 guests will gather at the Grand Ballroom in the Burswood Entertainment Complex to celebrate the WA Amateur Football League’s Fairest & Best players across the 25 grades.

Bouncedown for all league fixtures is at 2.30pm, following reserves at 12.35pm and colts at 10. 45am.
