President’s Message Welcome, GGC members! The new season brings with it a welcome change of temper-

atures, fall gardening, raking leaves — and GGC’s fall schedule of meetings and activi-

ties. When the 2017-18 year ended, we were still waiting to hear from National Garden

Clubs, Inc. as to any awards won by GGC. We are pleased to announce that we re-

ceived First Place awards for our Newsletter and Scholarship Brochure! See page 17.

Congratulations to all who work on those projects!

Again this year we have several opportunities to volunteer. Attending Grapefest in Sep-

tember is always fun, but it’s also fun to volunteer for Grapefest. As a GGC member, we

encourage volunteering. Beginning this month, you’ll see sign-up sheets at our General

Meetings for volunteers to help with activities like Butterfly Flutterby, our plant sale and

attending to gardens at West Texas Street. You’ll see other sign-up sheets for future

trips and local outings. Please visit with the members at your table about working in the

perennial bed at the GBG, becoming a docent at the garden, or participating in the rose

trial data collection. Every month, there are opportunities to get involved at different lo-

cations, parks and gardens. Keep an eye on the calendar on our award-winning website

to plan your month. I encourage you to participate in GGC activities and just have fun!

Annual Butterfly Flutterby, scheduled

for Saturday, October 20th, when we again partner with the Convention & Visitors Bu-

reau to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterflies on their annual flight to Mexi-

co. Did you know that five of “our” 2017 butterflies made it to Mexico? See page 18.

Big changes are happening at the Bessie Mitchell House this fall. Construction started

in July. We look forward to the new look of the building and the garden itself when com-

pleted. Through the Grapevine, our monthly newsletter, has a new look as well. Begin-

ning this month, you’ll notice some of the duplication with the yearbook has been re-

moved.

Many thanks to the Board and committee chairs who have worked tirelessly this sum-

mer, scheduling programs, workshops, and trips to give you the best garden club expe-

rience. And a very special thanks to Sheri Jones for compiling the yearbook, which

members will receive at the September meeting.

In closing, I’m excited about our upcoming programs, workshops, trips, and garden

tours -- and seeing all of you as we begin our 2018-19 GGC year.

21st Annual Butterfly Flutterby – Come Celebrate With Us!

The 21st

Annual Butterfly Flutterby will take place

on Saturday, October 20th. Our theme this year is

“Adventures of the Monarch.” GGC works with the

Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau to make

this free event possible each year. Butterfly Flut-

terby kicks off at 10:00 A.M. with a costume pa-

rade down Main Street, ending at the Grapevine

Botanical Gardens.

The day’s events include three Monarch butterfly releases, an Arts and Crafts ar-

ea organized by Linda Krimm, a Science area coordinated by Dinah Chancellor,

and the Art Contest headed up by Terry Curcio. Gloria Land will be selling butter-

fly items prior to the parade in the parking lot of the First United Methodist

Church, and at our booth during the event. The city will be providing a clown and

scarecrow, lawn games, and a scavenger hunt.

We need your help. There are two shifts, 8:30-11:30 A.M. and 11:30 A.M.-2:30

P.M. Many of the jobs are seated, with little to no walking required. Sign up online

in the Members Only section of the website, or look for sign-up sheets at the Sep-

tember General Meeting, or call Cindy Miller or Harriet Perrello to volunteer.

This year’s Craft Bazaar will be held on November 27th, prior to and after the No-

vember General Meeting. The Bazaar is a great opportunity to purchase holiday

gifts!

Do you have a crafting hobby? Do you sew, knit, bead, construct, or cook?

Would you like to sell these items? A $10 donation is requested to reserve a 6’

table. If you would to sell your items and donate the proceeds to GGC, then there

is no table charge.

We will have a signup sheet at both the September and October meetings.

Please consider taking time after our September GGC meeting to tour two of our

members’ gardens:

The Kowalski Garden - 3024 Old Mill Run, Grapevine

Joan reminisces: Tom and I built our home in 2002. Each year I would plan a

new garden. I’d lay out the shape I wanted with a long piece of thick yarn and

Tom would dig up the newly planted sod. Then I’d use a long garden tool with a

claw to stir up the dirt, add amendments, and plant flowers. Then the next year

we’d do the same thing — for six years! Not many of the original plants are in

these gardens — maybe only the spireas, which I love in the Spring! Over the

years new plants have been added, plants have been moved, and I’m sure

changes will continue to be made. This July was a good test for what survives a

blistering Texas summer as we were gone the entire month. Shrubs, grasses,

ferns, and caladiums made out the best. My favorite thing to do is to water and

“walk” my yard in the mornings, just to see what’s new and to pull a weed or

two. I’m anxiously awaiting cooler weather so I can sit outside on our patio and

enjoy “my space.” Aren’t we all?

we moved to the house in April

2017. There were some box-

woods, and yaupons under the

windows. The very first thing

Chuck did is build the pergola,

which we love. When we noticed

our dogs had made a path run-

ning from the back to the front,

we decided to turn it into a walk-

way. Chuck dug for several days

to level it, cut out roots, and put

down edging.

All the dirt Chuck removed was relocated to the area by the fence for my garden.

We added compost and fertilizer. We removed a tree in the corner because its

Scholarship News

Please pass on the following information about our scholarship to a child of yours,

a grandchild of yours or a neighbor attending a GCISD school or lives in Grape-

vine, Texas. We will be awarding one or more $3,000 scholarships in the Spring.

The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage the study of Horticulture, Floricul-

ture, Landscape Design, Conservation, Forestry, Botany, Agronomy, Plant Pathol-

ogy, Environment Management, City Planning, or other related subjects.

Scholarships may be awarded to any of the following enrolled with a de-

clared major in horticulture related subjects:

• A graduating Senior residing in the city limits of Grapevine or in the Grapevine-

Colleyville School District; or

• A graduating Senior who is the child or grandchild of a Grapevine Garden Club

member; or

• A scholarship recipient from the previous year; or

• A college student with a permanent residence in Grapevine or within the

Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District.

surface roots were ruining our lawnmower — some of those roots went 30

feet! Then we started planting. Not everything is in the right place quite yet. Some

places receive a bit more sun than we thought initially, so next year I'll be moving

things around! Then we tilled up the back yard and planted sod.

We’ve done so much work that I wanted to share it, but it’s still a work in pro-

gress! Although isn’t that partly what gardening is about — constant improvement

of your landscape?

The deadline for accepting scholarship applications is March 1st

. This allows

the scholarship committee sufficient time to review the applications and present

them to the Board members at their April meeting. The awarded applicants and

their parents are then invited to attend our Spring Picnic in May to be officially

presented to and congratulated by our membership.

The scholarship committee is looking forward to receiving many applications this

year! If you know of anyone that fits the parameters outlined above, please refer

them to our website for more information and an application. Our 2017-18 recipi-

ents are pictured below, along with the thank you notes each young woman sent

to GGC.

West Texas Street Work Day

Tuesday, October 30th, 9:00 A.M.

BOOOO!

Yes, it’s spooky, but our first work day of this new GGC is on Halloween Eve and

that can be kinda scary. I hope all of you had a good summer, although it has

been HOT HOT HOT. I know we have lots to do this time of year in our own gar-

dens, but looking forward, it will be getting cooler, I promise, and that means it is

“PANSY TIME.”

Let’s start at 9:00 A.M. and do some weeding, a little trimming, generally clean up

the beds that I’m sure are begging for attention, and then we can plant our beauti-

ful pansies. You know what comes next, right? Breakfast at Jake’s. We can all go

over to Main Street and visit about our summer vacations and talk dirt. So sign

up online or at the General Meeting, Tuesday, September 25th

.

We have two new committee members this year, so please welcome Laurie Ev-

ans and Lefty Mitchell to our group. We are so pleased they decided to join us.

Candy Cawley and Jamie Moser are continuing to work hard doing Membership

and we will miss them, but hope they continue to join us on work days as time

permits.

Visiting Monarch Butterflies on the West Coast

If you’d love to see thousands of migrating Monarch butterflies clustered in a

compact community sanctuary, but cannot make the trek to Mexico, here’s an-

other plan you might want to consider.

In December, 2017, my husband and I made a trip to Pismo Beach, California,

which is on the Pacific Coast, north of Los Angeles (south of San Jose) not far

from Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo on U.S. Highway 101. The Hearst Castle

is an easy drive up the coast, and the wineries in the area are a “must taste” ex-

perience. (So, there’s more than butterflies to see here!)


Pismo Beach is what many people might call a “hippy” hold-over town (and it is),

but it is one of the two or three locations on the West Coast for Monarch butter-

flies that live west of the Rocky Mountains to find winter sanctuary. Many of these

beauties returning to Pismo Beach each year have been tagged and counted over

the years. They come from as far north as British Columbia and as far east as

Santa Fe, New Mexico. Monarchs also over-winter in Pacific Grove (a small sanc-

tuary we visited) and are also found in Monterey.

Last year when we visited the sanctuary in Pismo Beach, the docents there had

counted over 14,000 Monarchs resting in the eucalyptus trees in the sanctuary.

Now, you may ask, how on earth did they come up with that number?? Well, ac-

cording to two docents in the sanctuary, they count the clusters of Monarchs early

in the morning while they are resting on the eucalyptus leaves and the tempera-

tures are cool; then with telescopes, they count the numbers of butterflies on each

cluster. Math calculations of some sort come into play here, I’m sure, but I be-

lieved these dedicated volunteers who spend their time teaching visitors about the

Monarchs and their plight, and explaining what transpires in this warm, sunny

sanctuary every year! When the sun warms the area, the butterflies fly all around

the sanctuary.

We enjoyed just sitting in the sunshine and watching the Monarchs float through

the warm air. The docents assured us that the Monarchs do not eat during their

stay here nor do they breed while in town; they only drink water, so sprinklers are

turned on periodically for their refreshment.

The Monarchs begin arriving in Pismo Beach around mid-October, through No-

vember. The largest accumulations of butterflies occur in December and January;

then in February they begin their trek north again. November and December are

probably the best times to visit the area.

I highly recommend this trip to anyone who would be thrilled to feel Monarch but-

terflies flitting past your nose in the sunshine! I would be happy to answer any

questions you have about our trip, including providing suggestions about places to

stay.

Gardeners on the Go

Several GGC members have stepped up to plan Garden-

ers on the Go events for the 2018-19 Club year. We think

you’ll be pleased with what’s in store!

The Master Gardeners of both Dallas and Tarrant Counties are hosting garden

tours in October. Please see the flyer for the Tarrant County tour on page 13 and

a description of the Dallas County tour on page 14. While we are not planning or-

ganized carpools for either tour, we encourage you to take advantage of this op-

portunity to tour beautiful gardens which will certainly provide you with a myriad

of ideas for your own home landscape.

Tickets are available online for both tours, and the funds raised benefit the Dallas

County Master Gardener Association’s school and community projects and the

Tarrant County Master Gardener scholarship fund.

If you’ve ever wanted to visit the Biltmore Estate and Gardens, now is your

chance! Former GGC member (and current North Carolina resident) Cheryl Neu-

mann has planned a six-day trip to the Asheville area, including the beautiful Bilt-

more! The travel itinerary and pricing can be found on pages 15-16.

This trip is limited to 25 people, and a deposit of $250.00 is required at sign-up.

With an exciting itinerary and exceptional pricing, we expect this trip to fill up very

quickly. If you’re interested, you might consider signing up NOW. The Registration

Gardeners on the Go — Companion Planting with Herbs

Wednesday, September 26th

Join Gardeners on the Go for our first outing of the year to learn about Compan-

ion Planting with Herbs at Marshall Grain, 3525 William D. Tate Ave. in Grape-

vine, on Wednesday, September 26th at 10 A.M. We will have time for some plant

shopping after the herb talk, then go to lunch at The Italian Crust, located right

around the corner at 2140 Hall-Johnson Rd., #100. They have a delicious lunch

menu and plenty of space for us to sit and chat!

Although the program is free, sign-ups are requested, so please contact Karen

Rice if you’re interested in attending.

Gardeners on the Go – Pumpkins and Succulents at NHG

Thursday, October 25th

With Halloween just around the corner, we thought

decorating your very own pumpkin with succulents

would add to your fall harvest décor! We will travel via

carpool to North Haven Gardens, 7700 Northaven

Road, in Dallas on Thursday, October 25th. Pumpkin

decorating starts at 11:00 a.m.

The pumpkins will be from the “Pumpkin Capital of Texas,” i.e., Floydada, Tex-

as. You will have your choice of living succulents, and other decorations will be

provided for you. North Haven will offer each attendee a 10% coupon for pur-

chases that day.

Afterwards, you can choose to eat with your GGC friends in the Café at North

Haven Gardens. For those of you who have not eaten there before, this is a

lovely dining spot within the Gardens that offers a wonderful lunch menu. The

cost for the workshop is $28.00, and lunch is on your own. Contact either Sha-

Gardeners on the Go — DCMGA 2018 Fall Garden Tour

The Dallas County Master Gardener Associa-

tion’s 2018 Fall Garden Tour will be held Satur-

day, October 13th, from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

The Tour features five residential gardens and

one school garden, Moss Haven Farm. The

gardens vary from cottage casual to classic ele-

gance — and will provide you with numerous

ideas for your own garden.

Educational opportunities will be offered at

some locations, with experts speaking about

water features, pollinators, turf, chickens, and

vegetable gardening. A raffle with items from

local vendors will take place on the day of the

Tour, as well as a silent auction for a handmade

quilt.

Ticket sales are now underway on the DCMGA

website, www.dallascountymastergardeners.org,

where you can see pictures and read brief de-

scriptions of each of the gardens. The ticket

price is $15.00 for advance purchase, and

$20.00 the day of the event. Please note that

the Tour will take place RAIN or SHINE, and

tickets are non-refundable.

On a personal note, I toured each of the gar-

dens in order to write the descriptions for the

Tour brochure and DCMGA website. Believe

me, this Tour is NOT TO BE MISSED!
