ganized for this purpose.

The previous beauty pag-

eants highlighted beauty,

physical appearance, talent

and intelligence. Though we

consider these of importance,

this event gives prime impor-

tance to how the Filipino cul-

ture and values are highlighted,

lived, expressed and portrayed

by the candidates.

Performances shall evolve

around Filipino presentations

showing Filipino cultural

dances, songs and music, his-

tory, and culture. Regional

traditional costumes shall be

paraded and instead of the

usual gown competition, it

shall be a parade of the tradi-

tional Maria Clara and Barong

Tagalong. The questions shall

illicit responses from the can-

didates that are reflective of

the innate “Pinoy” values and

intelligence.

Objectives:

Specifically, the event has the following objectives:

1. Showcase the best of Filipino culture: dances, songs, language,

costumes, beauty, values, and traditions;

2. Highlight the best practices and characteristics of the Filipino

migrants in Korea;

3. Provide a venue for cultural sharing and interaction between the

Koreans and the Filipinos; and

4. To raise funds for the different programs and outreach activities

of the community such as:

• Hospital and medical assistance;

• Scholarship program;

• Emergency deportation; and

• Other urgent needs and outreach activi-

ties of the Philippine Center.

Criteria:

The candidates were carefully screened by the Committee and the

Community was consulted by publishing their names, photos and

personal information in the SAMBAYANAN, the official Newsletter

of the community, making sure that the following criteria were satis-

fied:

• a Filipino citizen;

• 18-35 years of age;

• single (for female candidates only);

• a Catholic; and

• with good moral standing.

To make sure that the candidates shall excellently perform on stage

and be able to show the BEST of the Filipino, they were given a

series of inputs on basic Public Speaking Skills, Personality Devel-

opment, and testimonies from former titlists and contestants of simi-

lar pageants. It is the first time this is being offered to candidates

since this event has been introduced to the community.

Tickets worth 10,000 won shall give every kababayan a chance to:

1. watch the event;

2. be reminded of the Filipino culture and values;

3. win 1,000,000 won or other big prizes in the raffle

draw; and

4. help a kababayan who is need.

The man won (10,000) can go a long, long way to entertain oneself,

be proud of being Pinoy, and helping others.

“Humingi kayo at kayo’y bibigyan; hu-

manap kayo at kayo ay makasusumpong;

kumatok kayo at ang pinto ay bubuksan

para sa inyo. Sapagkat tumatanggap ang

bawat humihingi. Nakasusumpong ang

bawat humahanap at binubuksan ang pinto

Sa sanlibutang ito, magmula nang tayo

ay isilang ay marami na tayong kahilingan.

Halimbawa, kapag sumapit na ang araw ng

pasko, gusto nating magkaroon ng bagong

damit, sapatos at mga laruan. Umaasa tayo

na ibibigay ito sa atin ni Santa Claus. Min-

san ay nagsasabit pa nga tayo ng medyas

sa paniniwalang mapupuno ito ng kendi

kinabukasan. Ngayon, namulat na tayo sa

katotohanan na ang Santa Claus ay likhang

isip lamang ng mga magulang upang mag-

karoon ng kulay ang kapaskuhan ng mga

bata.

Katulad ng isang musmos, nais ng Diyos

na lumapit tayo sa kanya na parang bata.

Walang kataasan at puno ng kababaan.

Napakadali para sa Panginoon na ibigay

ang ating hinihiling kung ito ay sasamahan

ng pananalig. Kung noon ay naniwala tayo

sa imahinasyon tungkol kay Santa Claus,

mas higit tayong maniwalang may Diyos

na totoo na Siyang lumalang ng sandaigdi-

gan. Nalulugod Siya sa mga taong humi-

hiling ng may pananalig at pananam-

palataya sa puso. “Ang anumang hilingin

ninyo sa pananalangin ay tatanggapin

ninyo, kung nananalig kayo.” (Mateo

21:22)

Mayroon akong kaibigan na matiyagang

naghihintay sa kanyang matagal ng kahil-

ingan sa Diyos. Hanga ako sa kanya dahil

kahit minsan ay hindi siya bumibitaw at

patuloy na umaasang ito ay kanyang

makakamtan. Minsan ay nilalait na siya at

napakababa ng tingin sa kanya ng iba,

subalit hindi niya ito pinapansin dahil alam

niyang bahagi lamang ito ng mga pag-

subok na dapat niyang pagdaanan sa pag-

sisikap makasunod kay Kristo. Buong ti-

yaga niyang dinadayo kahit saang lugar na

may bible sharing. Kahit na pagod sa tra-

baho ay nagpupursige pa rin siyang tuparin

ang panawagan sa kanya. Gumugugol rin

siya ng mga oras sa pagninilay araw-araw

ng Salita ng Diyos sa Bibliya. Magastos

rin ang ginagawa niya na kung hindi la-

mang sa kanyang matibay na pananam-

palataya, marahil ay sumuko na siya.

Natandaan kung sinabi niya na ang

panawagan ng Diyos ay hindi mo kailan-

man matatakasan kahit saan ka pa mag-

punta. Napagtanto niyang karamdaman

lamang o di kaya’y kahirapan ang kanyang

daranasin kapag nagmamatigas siya. Na-

pag-isip-isip ko na tama siya dahil nabasa

ko rin sa aklat ng Exodo at Levitico ang

tinutukoy niya.

Kabilin-bilinan ng aking sinisinta noong

papunta na ako dito sa Korea na “hanapin

ko raw Siya at sa Kanya lamang daw ako

lumapit.” Hindi naman talaga ako manunu-

lat, ni hindi sumagi sa isipan ko na ako ay

makapagsulat sa pahayagang ito. Marami

akong dahilan at mga alibay bago Niya ako

tawagin upang maglingkod sa Kanyang

ubasan. Umiiwas ako sa ganitong mga

usapan dahil alam kong sakripisyo talaga

at mahirap ang sumunod sa Kanya. Hang-

gang isang araw, sa pilit kung pag-iwas ay

wala na akong mapuntahan at nasukol din

sa huli. Wala na akong magawa (sa totoo

lang, hindi natin talaga Siya kayang tang-

gihan) kundi ang sundin Siya. Labis akong

humanga sa mga manunulat noong una

kong mabasa ang Sambayanan newsletter.

Kaya naman, pinangarap kong mapabilang

sa kanila at tanong ko sa aking sarili, ano

kaya ang pakiramdam kapag marami ang

nakakabasa ng aking sinusulat?

"I shall die for God,

and for Him I will give many thousands

of lives if I had them."

THESE were the heroic words of Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila prior to

his death by torture at Nishazaka Hill in Nagasaki, Japan in 1637.

Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint, was beatified on February

18, 1981 at the Luneta, and subsequently canonized in Rome on Oc-

tober 18, 1987. His feast day falls on September 28, tomorrow.

In his book "Lorenzo de Manila, the Protomarytyr of the Philip-

pines and His Companions," Fr. Fidel Villaroel, OP describes him as

a simple ordinary Chinese "mestizo."

He was born between 1600 and 1610. He married a Tagala and

sired two sons and a daughter. As a boy, Lorenzo served in the con-

vent of the Dominican friars as houseboy and sacristan. On the side,

he became an escribano, one skilled with beautiful penmanship for

official and church documents. He was a devotee to the Blessed Vir-

gin having been a confrade of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary.

Something happened that made him a fugitive from the law. "He

had a quarrel with a Spaniard," Fr. Villaroel who documented

Lorenzo’s canonization process says. Fearing the consequences,

whether guilty or not, he fled for his life, joining a group of Spanish

missionaries en route to Japan.

Lorenzo’s escape was the turning point of his life, which led to

his martyrdom.

He encountered heroic death at the hands of the harsh Japanese

military "shoguns." Prior to his death, he was mercilessly tortured .

One form included the "water torture" wherein huge quantities of

water were forced into the victim’s stomach by means of a funnel

until it was extremely bloated.

Then the sufferer was made to lie on the ground and two minis-

ters would step on both ends of a board placed on the stomach. The

torture was repeated as many times as the victim refused to recant.

Lorenzo Ruiz’ terrible sufferings exemplify heroic faith and loy-

alty to God at the cost of dear life.

Nowadays there are virtually no more tortures and persecutions

for one’s faith. The "tortures" and spiritual deaths one may encounter

are the daily trials and crosses.

Such may be the drudgery of work, loneliness or putting up with

heartless, apathetic people among relatives, coworkers, and coping

with lingering illness, like arthritis, or an incurable sickness like

cancer.

We pray to our first Filipino saint on his feast day tomorrow to

bless our country in order to achieve peace and unity so we can sur-

mount our socioeconomic problems.

Further, we pray to St. Lorenzo Ruiz for ourselves that we may

bear the crosses and trials we encounter daily.

gay ang Diyos at hindi Niya ako binigo dahil ang isang beses ay

naging tuloy-tuloy. Naranasan ko ang Kanyang pagtugon sa

pamamagitan ng pagpatong ng kamay ng isang Preacher sa isang

Mass and Healing ng El Shaddai-Prayer Partners. Sabi ng Pangi-

noon, “Ngunit kung kulang ng karunungan ang sino man sa inyo,

humingi siya sa Diyos at siya’y bibigyan; sapagkat ang Diyos ay

saganang magbigay at hindi nanunumbat. Subalit ang humi-

hingi’y dapat manalig at huwag mag-aalinlangan; sapagkat ang

nag-aalinlangan ay parang alon sa dagat na itinataboy ng hangin

kahit saan.” (Santiago 1:5-6). Ito’y inilalahad ko bilang isang

buhay na patotoo at hindi gawa-gawa lamang. Totoong may Di-

yos na tumutugon sa lahat nating kahilingan. Kung hindi man ito

maibigay kaagad, huwag bibitaw dahil maaaring sinusubukan ka

lang Niya o di kaya’y hindi makakabuti para sa iyo ang iyong

gusto. Ang Diyos ang nakakaalam sa lahat ng bagay at mayroong

nakalaan sa bawat isa. Magkakaroon lamang ito ng kaganapan sa

panahon na Kanyang ipinasya.

Evangelization is not the work of the

clergy and the religious alone, for it does

not only mean preaching by word of mouth,

but also by joyful living out of the Word of

God in our daily faith-life, in such a way

that it radiates to others, inviting them to

be one with the Lord in Whom we are one.

Thus, St. John wrote: “What we have seen

and heard (what we have experienced con-

cretely with the Lord) we announce to you

also, so that you will join with us in the

fellowship that we have with the Father

and with His Son Jesus Christ. We write

this in order that our joy may be com-

plete.” (1 John 1:3-4)

For so long a time now, we have thought

of evangelization as an act preaching and

teaching the message by word of mouth or

by pen. Consequently, volumes upon vol-

umes of books have been written, but they

have all ended up shelved in libraries that

are now museums. Many talks and lectures

have been given, but did not echo in the

hearts of listeners. Many churches, espe-

cially in Europe, have become lonesome

monuments of empty religious or pious

desires.

On the other hand, the rise of the Catho-

lic Charismatic is a saving phenomenon

that is now breathing new life into the de-

sert of dry bones, as the Prophet Ezekiel

had seen in his vision (Ezekiel 37:1-10).

Evangelization is celebration. The Good

News is that the Lord, our “El Shaddai,” is

personally present with us. Here, we joy-

fully celebrate His presence. Our Catholic

Church, through the Charismatic, an-

nounces the New Creation amidst the

chaos of our time. However, there is a

place in this chaos that is shielded by a

firmament against the waters above and

stands stronger than the mountains on pil-

lars against the waters below, and this

space is the dwelling place of El Shaddai!

LET’S RENEW OUR COVENANT

WITH EL SHADDAI!

When the Lord God revealed Himself to

Abaham and Israel as El Shaddai, He

promised to give them land and prosperity.

These are images or symbols of life and

immortality, and security and expansion

unto Eternity. These are gifts of the Spirit

of the Lord Jesus Christ, Who died and

rose from the dead for us, assure us that

our lasting city is not in this time but in

Eternity.

Today the Lord God reveals Himself to

us as El Shaddai to reassure us of the full-

ness of life with Him beyond the reach of

death on earth. On our part, let us renew

our faith. As the people of Israel shouted,

“We will do whatever the Lord God says,”

so let us all do whatever He commands us.

My Hero

Most girls think of their dad as their hero. And I am certainly

of no exception.

My dad is just like superman to me. Hardworking, patient,

emotionally strong, confident, optimistic, strict and generous…

indeed the best dad in the world. He is such a good provider, he

never waits for us to ask money from him…he always asks us

ahead if we still had allowance, or if we needed money for our

tuition and the like. He worked so hard to provide for us but it

was so easy for him to give. He thinks of us first and foremost,

putting himself last all the time. It gives me such a good feeling

of comfort and security just knowing he is there. He is like a

rock…strong and reliable…someone you can count on…no mat-

ter what.

He passed away a few years ago. But he will always be alive

to me, and that is why I always use the present tense when talking

about him.

I remember his birthday the year after he died. I had exams the

whole day so I had no choice but to visit the cemetery at night. It

was raining hard and it was incredibly difficult to get a cab. The

traffic was horrible.

And yet by some miracle I was able to get one. The cab driver

was quite young, maybe around my age. He noticed that I had

some incense sticks with me, and for while we talked that. It

turned out we both shared a love of it. And then he asked me

where I was going. I told him, ‘to the cemetery to visit my dad’.

‘I see’, he said , ‘and so that is what the incense sticks are for’.

As we were talking, a feeling of warmth filled the air, and we

both felt so at ease and comfortable.

Finally we got to the cemetery, but to my dismay, found that it

was closed. The guards wouldn’t let me in and he said that I had

to come back the next day. When I was young, my parents called

me ‘kulit’, (meaning stubborn), because I just couldn’t compre-

hend the word ‘no’. I guess some things never do change. I

fought with the guards and insisted that they let me in as it was

my dad’s birthday, and that I would not leave unless they do so.

After arguing for some time, they finally realized I wasn’t going

to leave, so they let me in ‘only for a little while’. At that time,

Ariel, the taxi driver said he was hungry and would just go some-

where to eat, but that he would come back for me later. My law

books were in the in the taxi, and for a minute I panicked that he

might not return and I would lose my books forever, but some-

thing in my heart told me to trust him. And so I did. I lit my can-

dle, said my prayers in the dark night, and later on Ariel returned.

The guard asked me if I knew this guy personally, and I said I

didn’t. And they were surprised. They said I should be careful,

because this time of night wasn’t safe, and that I should not trust

strangers, especially men. They eyed Ariel suspiciously. But

something in my heart told me that I was safe.

And he did take me back home safely. And when I tried pay-

ing him, he said, … ‘don’t worry about it. Just give me half’, (the

bill was enormous). And so I thanked him, and did as he said.

That night was magical somehow. I felt something the minute

I got into the cab. It was as though, he was meant to be there. Just

for me. The was something so kind and loving and so sweetly

familiar in the air and I think both he and I sensed it. The feeling

got stronger when I lit my incense sticks and the sweet scent trav-

eled through the night wind, in the dark graveyard. Ariel told me

to take care of myself and to pray for my dad always. I told him

that he should take care of himself too.

Looking back, I realized it was foolish of me to try to go to the

cemetery late at night. But I guess my dad was there to protect

me. He knew I was apt to do such things. He knew I was likely to

do something impulsive, dangerous and careless. And he sent

Ariel to make sure I was safe. I felt good that day. It was a magi-

cal night. I slept soundly, knowing my dad had saved the day.

HEAVEN’S GATE

Did you ever ask yourself if you could

ever enter the gate of heaven? I did…quite

a a few times…it was Friday morning then

when I tried to reflect on the gospel of that

day, when suddenly I saw one of my inspi-

rational books. I just opened it and started

to read. There I found the story that really

fits the gospel.

It’s about the final judgment day. All

the people were gathered outside the gate

of heaven. St. Peter and God tried to

choose those who are really worthy of en-

tering the gate but they found out that no

one was qualified. That’s why God told St.

Peter that He will give an amnesty for eve-

ryone. A loud round of applause was heard

from that announcement and everyone

entered the gates of heaven. They all cele-

brated even St. Peter and God. Little did

every one know, there is still a final test?

When the gate was about to close, some

protested and went outside the gate of

heaven. Those who protested were the

people who lived a good and straight life

and served the Lord while they were on

earth. They said that it’s not fair with them

for they sacrificed a lot, while others lived

a sinful life while they were on earth.

The gospel of that day was all about

servanthood and a heart that’s free from

any grudges, envy, jealous, pain, and pride.

It’s really great to do good things, to live a

life free from any sin, to serve God, for

you will really experience heaven on earth

by doing that.

But that’s not the end, still, what mat-

ters most is our heart. I reflected on it and

there I found the answer. It’s really hard to

enter the gate of heaven, but the good thing

is, He is never unfair to give us pardon

from all our sins. He is always willing to

open the gate of heaven for us, if we really

only seek Him and enthrone Him from the

deepest of our heart, a heart full of love.

Women OFWs underqualify themselves for employment

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino women often shelve their hard-earned

college diplomas to enter jobs abroad which they are overqualified to do,

an academe-based group on women including migration issues said on

Friday.

Aurora Javate De Dios Women and Gender Institute (WAGI), said

Filipinas who work abroad are often underemployed and contribute to

the growing number of ‘brain waste’ in the country.

“Women are under qualifying themselves. The number of women

migrating is increasing but the jobs placed for them are designated," De

Dios told GMANews.TV on Friday. “There is hardly any country where

women CEOs are in-demand."

De Dios, who presented a paper in the two-day International Confer-

ence on Gender Migration and Development in Manila, said women

professionals like teachers or doctors would apply overseas as domestic

helpers or nurses because the overseas labor market does not have any

demand for foreign women in their previous fields.

According to her, receiving countries should have a paradigm shift, or

a change in approach or assumptions, in the gender of foreign labor and

acknowledge the great contributions of females in certain male-

dominated fields.

Aiko Kikkawa of the International Organization of Migration (IOM)

said the Philippines has the greatest number of migrant women than men

who graduated in college compared with other labor-exporting countries

such as India, China, and Mexico.

Based on IOM data more than 570,000 Filipina women with college

degrees are pushed to work abroad.

Kikkawa said Filipino women also have a greater tendency to migrate

and work abroad compared to males once they receive their tertiary edu-

cation.

The deployment of more female OFWs began in the late 1970s with

the rise of newly industrialized countries like Taiwan, Singapore and

South Korea.

Most of the female workers were employed in "dirty, demeaning, and

dangerous" low-skilled or unskilled jobs but were religious in sending

remittances according to a 2007 report by the World Bank The face of

the OFW is still a woman

De Dios also assailed the de-feminization of labor as earlier reported

by Administrator Carmelita Dimzon of the Overseas Workers’ Welfare

Administration (OWWA).

Dimzon said that 60 percent of the 880,000 Filipinos who went over-

seas from January to August this year were males.

According to De Dios the real gauge of the feminization of labor is

not only the numbers that “fluctuate from time to time" but it also mani-

fests in the significant participation of women in the migration process.

Although statistically the percentage of women migrants has declined

last year, the number still reached the million-mark which was not pre-

sent several years ago.

“More men are working abroad as construction workers because of

the oil boom in the Middle East,“ said Kikkawa of the IOM. “But this is

only temporary."

Call to Action

Meanwhile, participants to the International Conference on Gender,

Migration and Development have drafted a Manila Call to Action on

Friday for the consideration of the Philippine Department of Foreign

Affairs (DFA).

The two-day forum was organized by the National Commission on

the Role of Filipino Women in partnership with other migrant worker

groups and international institutions like the UNICEF and the Interna-

tional Labor Organization.

According to De Dios they will stress the need to seize more oppor-

tunities of women migrants as well as uphold their rights as women and

human beings.

Among their recommendations were to ensure that recruitment agen-

cies would be gender-sensitive in their approach so that both women and

men would obtain decent jobs in accordance with their skills;

Foster good practices in reducing women's segregation and labor

market segmentation; encourage banks to provide safe remittance chan-

nels; as well as promote equal representation of women with men in

national and international consultation mechanisms on migration.

"Hopefully this will provide space for dialogue and incremental

6 nabbed for cheating OFWs, clients in foreign exchange centers

MANILA, Philippines — Six men allegedly involved in "short-

changing" overseas Filipino workers and other clients of foreign

exchange shops in Ermita district were arrested by police on Thurs-

day.

Sr. Supt. Pablo Francisco Balagtas, chief of the Manila Police

District’s Mobile Force (DMF), identified the arrested suspects as

54-year old Billy Akmad and his sons Odan, 22, and Randy, 23,

along with Lauro Santiago, 18;Joseph Gomez, 23; and Rogie Unay,

22.

In a report to Balagtas, DMF DMF Intelligence and Investigation

Section chief Senior Police Officer 4 Benjamin Abad said the sus-

pects were rounded up from different money changers along Mabini

St., corner Sta. Monica St. in Ermita.

Abad said Balagtas ordered the crackdown amid complaints of

rampant short-changing in certain foreign exchange centers.

Last August 7, a Filipino-Dutch identified as Jasmin Cruz-Van

Schaik complained that she was shortchanged by 180,000 pesos at

Len Money Changer along A. Mabini St. in Malate District.

A suspect identified as Anabelle Santos, 38, Len Money Changer

teller was arrested during follow-up operation.

After the incident was reported by media, several other OFWs

came out in the open and sent letters to the Philippine National Po-

lice (PNP) headquarters to report that they, too, experienced the

same fate in several money changers in Manila.

Abad said appropriate charges are now being readied against the
