Policies General Policies – Peanuts, Tree Nuts & Latex We ask that families do not bring any peanuts, tree nuts or latex items to any H.O.M.E. events or classes as we have families with airborne allergies. Since Faith Lutheran facilitates many outside groups, we cannot guarantee the environment will be completely free of these items. – Inclement Weather H.O.M.E. follows the Troy Public Schools for class cancellation due to inclement weather. However, since we do not rely on a school bus system for transportation, there will be times that H.O.M.E. will meet when Troy Schools are closed. Laurie Guidry will email all H.O.M.E. families registered at www.flchomegroup.com and a post will be made on the H.O.M.E. Facebook page if that occurs. – When To Keep A Child Home The following guidelines are appropriate reasons to keep your child home:

• A fever of 100 F or higher. Your child should be free of a fever (without fever-reducing medicines) for 24 hours before coming to an event or activity

• A consistent, goopy, runny nose • Vomiting and/or diarrhea within the last 24 hours or as directed by your physician. Your child

should be free of vomiting for 24 hours before coming to an event or activity. • White or yellow drainage from the eye, crusty eyes, and/or redness of the eyelid or skin

surrounding the eye. • A bad cough – one that you wouldn’t want your well child around. • A sore throat, especially with fever or swollen glands in the neck. • A rash that is associated with fever or severe itching. • If your healthcare provider has prescribed antibiotics, your child needs to remain at home for

at least 24 hours after taking the first dose. • Any infectious or contagious disease that can infect other children such as chicken pox,

influenza, whooping cough or gastroenteritis.

This has been a wonderful benefit and blessing to many homeschoolers. If you are looking for great raw honey, please contact Cathy Rowan at [email protected] for more details. She will send emails or post at the H.O.M.E. Facebook Group page when it is available (which is usually during the fall and spring months, with some availability during the winter)… and honey is available now. Honey, nature's original sweetener, is being rediscovered as a natural source of energy that also offers a unique combination of nutritional benefits. Many athletes in their regimen use it. Unlike white sugars, the body does not store honey but rather, metabolizes it for quickest recovery before, during, and after physical exertion. In addition to being a concentrated energy source, honey contains a wide array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids. Many people with allergies use honey as well as those looking for natural remedies for colds and sore throats.

Other extended family will be $20.00 per family or $5.00 a person. Come with your family and have a great night with new and old friends all while learning dances with a live band and live caller. Plenty of chairs and water will be on hand for those who would like to take a break or would like to watch the rest of us dance! You will enjoy fiddle and banjo music, hoedown, barn dance and square dance fun. We have the best caller around: Glen Morningstar! He is great with slow walk-through instructions that everyone can learn, followed by the music and everyone is catching on, even the littlest ones are in step! Don’t worry if you come without a partner, grab one there and join the fun. We will begin with a potluck dinner at 5:30pm (be there by 5:15 or sooner to set your dish out). You will bring a main dish or salad AND dessert. We are not looking for anything fancy (unless you want to); pizza and store bought items are welcome. Years past we have run short on food so please consider your dish to feed 10-12 people (think lasagna, casserole dishes, hotdogs, Sloppy Joes, finger sandwiches and crock pot meals). Salads can be green, fruit, bean, salsa, Jell-O, etc. We invite our band to join us in the potluck. The Barn Dance will begin at 6:30 pm sharp, but join us anytime. Service Opportunities SOLES4SOULS Ongoing Shoe Drive

February 2011,H.O.M.E. had our first shoe drive for Soles4souls, a non-profit organization who facilitates the delivery of shoes, to get them to the people who desperately need footwear around the world.

It was a great success!!! We collected and delivered to a drop off site in Ohio 1,305 pairs of shoes in August 2011! This was in part due to the help of other local homeschool groups that joined our efforts. We have continued this drive as an ongoing drive. Ever since, I have had people drop off shoes on my front porch, brought to Co-op op classes, or meetings and fieldtrips. My attic is getting full!

• Over 300 million children around the world are without shoes. These shoes are given to men, women and children all over the world (125 countries).

• Over 12 million shoes have been distributed through Soles4souls since it started just 5 years ago.

• Over 1.5 billion pairs of shoes lay in American closets or heading to landfills. Your extra pair of shoes could be their first.

• Soles4soles will take almost any condition shoes, sandals, flip-flops, boots etc, even your evening pumps as they are used to help locals start a shoe business. Torn, poor condition shoes are used for repairing other shoes or recycled and they are paid for the scraps

When cleaning out closets hits your house, please consider donating your old, unused shoes at our homeschool parent’s meetings, co ops or special events. Or just drop them off on my front porch. I’ll know what it’s for. A donation box will be available during all H.O.M.E. events at Faith Lutheran or drop off at my house. I am at 17 Mile and Dequindre in Sterling Heights. 2605 Mellowood Dr., one mile from Faith.

Have your children get involved by giving up a pair of shoes to someone else, let them see you give away a pair or two, ask relatives and friends for their unwanted shoes. If you can tie your shoestrings together, rubber band string-less shoes or put all your donations in one bag then into the box, it will make sorting easier for them and me. Bring me one pair or bring me 50! No amount is too small. A single shoe too!

Pizza Fundraiser on four H.O.M.E. Co-op days! Take the stress out of packing up a lunch and let us deliver lunch to you! This upcoming school year, Mission Possible Kids will be selling pizza and lemonade/water towards fundraising for Morning Star Foundation. We have 4 dates for you to participate: October 19, December 7, February 15 and April 19. Please pre-order your pizza on-line at www.flchomegroup.com under Events. You can pay when you pick up your lunch. When you are online, please enter the number of slices your family would like (please specify how many cheese and how many pepperoni) in the notes area.

$2.00 per slice (cheese or pepperoni) and a lemonade/water, $1.50 for each additional slice. (Don't worry – it will NOT be Little Caesars.)

Please email Shannon at [email protected] with any questions that you may have about the fundraiser, GO Hope, or MPKids. We may have leftovers that can be bought when it is delivered but pre-order to guarantee your order. We will also have a gluten-free option as well. Please specify if you need gluten free in the notes. Pizzas will be delivered at the beginning of the lunch hour. MPKids is looking forward to serving you! What are Mission Possible Kids? They do projects such as collecting goods for food banks, cooking meals for homeless shelters, making gifts for hospitalized children, raising money for orphanages and wells —the list goes on and on. Each MPKids agent can touch as many as 100 lives in one school year. Last year we touched over 1,000 lives! Throughout the year we are often collecting items (like used cell phones, left over Halloween candy and birthday party decorations, and items for foster children etc.) Find out more about us and be kept up to date on what is happening with us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/GO-Hope-Mission-Possible-Kids/267328129946390 Learn more about MPK on their website: www.mpkids.org. Who is Morning Star? Morning Star Foundation has two main projects: Morning Star Family Home in Beijing and Morning Star Uganda. They focus on caring for orphaned, abandoned and needy children with severe heart disease, most of whom have been given no hope. The group home in Beijing cares for the sickest of babies in a small home setting with a lot of one-on-one attention and care. They receive life saving surgeries that they would not otherwise receive in a government run orphanage, and once they are nursed back to health, the focus turns to finding their forever families. The Uganda mission is similar and helps seriously ill kids, specifically kids who have serious heart disease but who currently have no opportunity for surgery. You can learn more about them by visiting www.morningstarproject.org.

Gleaners Food Banks H.O.M.E. Students have an opportunity to serve at Gleaners Food Banks in both Warren and Pontiac. The name “Gleaners” comes from the Bible. Farmers left some grain in the field after they harvested each fall so poor people could pick up or "glean" what was left to feed themselves. Gleaners Warren The Gleaners Warren Distribution Center provides surplus and low-cost food and personal care products to people in need in southeastern Michigan. Gleaners fulfills its role with a sense of compassion and urgency, recognizing that in many cases, it is the only resource of emergency food for persons in need. Today, one in five Michigan children under the age of 18 years resides in a household getting food stamps. More than 250,000 school children in the Tri-county area are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunches. We serve each month from 9:30 - 11:30 am and can schedule 40 people per month. If you are interested in serving on any of the dates below, please email Vicki Drohan at [email protected] or 248.656.9381 with the number attending in your family to be put on the list. New families will receive a tour of the facility. The group will then proceed with whatever jobs need to be accomplished that day… It could be anything from packing boxes, to checking dates or filling snack bags. Each month we will provide a snack for the children donated by a participating family (based on a rotating basis) and Gleaners will provide bottled water. Families who are interested and able usually grab a bite to eat afterward. It's a good time of fellowship for the children and the moms. Certificates and community service credit is also available to any interested party. Thank you in advance for considering this awesome opportunity for your family to help those in our surrounding communities who are in need. Location:

Operation Christmas Child The Operation Christmas Child collection is coming up November 12-19. If you are not familiar with the program, it is a collection of shoeboxes filled with gifts that will be given to children in need around the world. Please consider filling a shoebox — or two or three — with your child or children. It may be the first Christmas gift some kids ever receive. You can even track your box to see where it goes — What a great geography project! You can find out more information, including what to put in the boxes, buying for different age groups, how to pack the box, and much more at this website: www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. Remember to include a note and even a picture. Elizabeth Mortensen in our group got a note from the child who received her box, 2 years later when a family member translated the letter to the child and his parents. She was so moved by the family wanting to thank her. The children who receive a box receive much more than a bunch of gifts. They receive the Gospel and the community receives supplies and medical needs. Cathy Rowan has agreed to help drop off donated boxes. If you bring your box/es to the November 16 Co-op (or drop off a box/es at Faith earlier that week), Cathy will take them to one of the drop off sites. If you have any questions, please contact, Cathy Rowan at Rowan, [email protected], or 586.214.5741. Care Calendar It is our desire to offer help to our HOME Group Families during times of need. The Care Calendar is an on-line and secure system that organizes meals, transportation, grocery shopping, housekeeping, child-care, etc. when a HOME Family is celebrating the birth of a new family member, recovering from a surgery or during the loss of a close family member. The Care Calendar is specifically designed for the needs of the family. When an account is created, a secure ID and Password are generated for that specific calendar. The web address, ID and Password are emailed out to only our HOME Group Members. The Members can access the calendar and sign up to prepare meals or help. This is an efficient way to serve our HOME Families without phone calls and a lot of man-hours. If your family has a need, please contact the Care Calendar Coordinator, Kori Glentzer at [email protected] or 810.533.0513.
