Thank you to those who donated to The Mission to Philippines. We are still collecting summer clothes and shoes for those in need. Please know we can use gentle used clothes, backbacks, and flipflops, please see letter in the vestibule. Tradition teaches us Christ was conceived on the Feast of the Annunciation. We will watch the parallel development of “Thomas” in the womb beginning on March 25 (Feast of the Annunciation) until December 25. The Office of Human Life and Dignity is making available a series of bulletin messages describing the fetal development of “Thomas.” Each week we will send out the messages to the parishes.

September 24 (week 26) Thousands and thousands of brain cells are growing in Thomas’s head every day! Soon Thomas will have billions of brain cells. I can make a fist and grasp things. My spine is beginning to form to protect my spinal cord. I’m covered by a white, cheesy substance that protects my skin. Don’t worry, it will come off right after birth. Mom can tell if her baby gets the hiccups. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” (Jeremiah 1:5) The Diocese of Raleigh will observe Respect Life Sunday on Sunday, October 1 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, 715 Nazareth Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606. Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama will be the main celebrant and homilist for this occasion, and a reception will follow under a tent on the grounds. All are invited. Contact Mary Beth Phillips at [email protected] or (919) 719-8267 for more information. You are invited to take part in the national 40 Days for Life prayer vigil from September 27 through November 4. Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama will kick off this year’s campaign in Raleigh at 8:00 am on September 27 at A Woman’s Choice abortion facility, 3305 Drake Circle, Raleigh, NC. The campaign of focused prayer takes place from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day. Another campaign will take place the same dates and times in Fayetteville at the Planned Parenthood at 4551 Yadkin Road. Please consider showing your support of life by signing up for an hour of prayer by contacting [email protected] or in Fayetteville at [email protected]. Red Mass Bishop Zarama will celebrate the Red Mass Friday, Oct. 6 at Sacred Heart Church in Raleigh at 12:10 p.m. The traditional Red Mass, an annual event in most dioceses and archdioceses, asks the Holy Spirit to guide all those who seek justice. The bishop will ask for God’s blessing on those who serve in government and legal professions, as well as law students and professors. All are welcome.

Inviting all Lay Ministers to a special presentation on “Missionary Discipleship”. The Office of Lay Leadership has invited Damon Owens who is a National Speaker, to come and share his passion for being a “Joy Filled Disciple” for Christ. We invite all those who serve as lay ministers in our Diocese including DRE’s, principals, teachers, catechists and those who serve in liturgical ministry both paid and un-paid to this free event. This event will honor those lay ministers who have earned degrees and who are celebrating significant anniversaries in ministry. Earn CEU’s and renewal credits for Master Catechists. Two opportunities will be offered to accommodate the faithful. October 5, 2017 at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Fayetteville from 7:00 pm -9:00 pm and on October 6, 2017 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. Inquiries: [email protected] 919-821-8149 Register at http://dioceseofraleigh.org/joy-of-discipleship Statement from Bishop Zarama regarding recent natural disasters Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

There is much to include among our prayers each day, especially for those continuing to suffer in the Caribbean from the effects of the recent series of storms and now from Hurricane Maria. I ask that the faithful of the Diocese of Raleigh join with me and the priests, deacons and consecrated religious in remembering among your intentions those so ravaged by the severe weather and those assisting them, as they again begin the recovery efforts.

Additionally, kindly include among these intentions, the people of Mexico City in their recovery work following the earthquake there this week. Pray for the repose of the souls of the hundreds who were killed, as well as those injured and all those now attending to them. Please also include prayers of gratitude to God for all those who avoided injury in this earthquake, especially our Diocese of Raleigh seminarians, some of whom are studying at the Seminario Hispano De Santa Maria De Guadalupe, which is located there in Mexico City.

From our daily reflection on the many blessings we have received, it is through our solidarity in prayer and our contribution to the recovery efforts that we not only reflect to others the goodness of God we have known, but also give His strength to all those who are suffering and so greatly burdened in life. With my gratitude in Christ, + Luis R. Zarama Bishop of Raleigh Lk 8:16-18 Jesus said to the crowd: "No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away."
