Energy AssistanceDo you need help paying your Electric and Heating Bills?

The Office of Home Energy (OHEP) helps eligible Maryland residents pay their utility bills, minimize the strain when the cold weather sets in, and make energy cost more affordable by providing grants under the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) and the Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP).

Seniors age 60 and older can receive application assistance, obtain information, or schedule an appointment to apply by con-tacting our Aging and Disability Resource Center staff at 1-855-843-9725 or 301-609-5712.

Bring the following to your appointment:

• Copy of applicant’s photo identi-fication

• Copy of social security card for everyone living in the home

• Proof of residency: copy of your current lease or current driver’s license

• Proof of household gross income for everyone in the home for the last 30 days (social security statement of benefits form (2017), pay stubs, pen-sion, annuity, investment income, veterans benefit payments etc.)

• Most recent energy bills, your home energy supplier and account number (electric/heating source)

Applicants must reapply for this program every year after July 1 for

their benefits to continue.

Residents' Rights MonthOctober is “Residents’ Rights Month,” an annual event designated by Consumer Voice to honor residents living in all long-term care facilities. It is an opportu-nity to focus on and celebrate awareness of dignity, respect and the rights of each resident.

The federal Nursing Home Reform Law guarantees residents’ rights and places a strong emphasis on individual dignity, choice, and self-determination. The law also requires nursing homes to “promote and protect the rights of each resident”. Residents’ Rights Month is a time to raise awareness of these rights and celebrate residents.

The theme for this year's Residents' Rights Month, "It's All About Me: My Life, My Care, My Choices," focuses on the respect and dignity of every resident. The theme highlights residents’ rights to choose their own schedule and activities, communicate how and with whom they choose, be free from abuse and unsafe environments, and be treated as an individual with unique wants and needs. Residents’ Rights Month is a time for staff, fami-lies, ombudsmen, residents and other advocates to focus on resident-directed care and emphasizing the self-determination, choice, and quality of life of each resident.

It's Time for your FLU SHOTAn annual seasonal flu vaccine (either the flu shot or nasal spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. Vaccines can give broader protection during the flu season, but experts state not to delay getting your vaccine. Even if you get the flu shot you may experience episodes when you are certain this is the flu.

The flu vaccine has never been easier to get. You don’t have to wait in long lines or make a future appointment Waldorf Senior Center and Clark Senior Center are offering flu shots this month. Check their calendar for dates and times.
