Greetings Neighbors, Fall arrives this month. If you’re from “up north”, that usually means a new school year begins, cooler temps start to arrive and leaves begin to change color. In Ocala, temps remain hot and it is often a month to watch out for hurricanes. Remember to keep an eye on the weather and have a hurricane kit prepared. In your Saddle Oak Club Handbook, you will find pages on hurricane prep as well as shelters if you need them. Stay safe. Don’t forget to read Bits and Pieces this month. There’s lots of news. Bereavement (contact Rita Cope 352-300-3333)
At the August BOD meeting, the directors decided that there should be a bereavement committee of 2-3 people to help each other and residents in case a death occurs and family wants a service in the clubhouse. That way, should one person move or be out of town, there will be other committee members to help. If you are interested in helping, please contact Rita Cope (352-300-3333) and/or Shirley Ashbaugh (304-995-7276).
Bowling
Looking for SOC bowlers!!! With all the new residents, we are looking for potential bowlers. Please consider joining with us on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. Although we are taking a break for the summer, we will resume action on the first Tuesday in October. For more information, call Debbie Lennox at 508-498-8511.
Blood Drive
So that you can plan ahead, there will be a blood drive on Thursday, October 24 from 10:00 to 12:00 at the clubhouse. Please do not use the golf cart parking spaces so there is room for the bus to park.
Aging Gracefully
Beginning in September there will be meetings on the second and fourth Thursday mornings of the month from 10:30-12:00. The purpose of the group is to discuss a multitude of topics that will focus on weight loss and getting healthy. The group is being organized by several interested people led by Joyce Mullen. September will be an organizational and planning month to determine topics the group is interested in exploring. The meetings will be open to residents of Saddle Oak Club and will be held in the clubhouse. So please join the group on Thursday, September 12 and 26.
Kitchen Coordinators
Please welcome Kim Schrimmel and Roxy Lyon as new kitchen coordinators. Page 5
Craft Show
Get ready! It’s coming! On Saturday, November 2, we will hold another Craft Show in the clubhouse from 8:00 am - 1:00 pm. The event, which will be open to the public, is again chaired by Kathleen Sirois. All crafts must be handmade by a resident. More details will follow, but this gives you time to make things. Snowbirds, create while you’re away and bring things back with you.
Election of Board Members
Volunteers are needed to serve on the Board of Directors for the HomeOwners’ Association beginning
in February. We are looking for 4 candidates. Two 3-year openings are available as we say goodbye to Toots Lobe and Shirley Ashbaugh. One 2-year and one 1-year position are also available. Those positions currently have appointed people who are eligible to officially run. As a Board member, you are asked to attend the monthly Board of Directors meeting on the second Tuesday and the monthly HomeOwners Association meeting. In addition, you will need to read and review the state statutes that govern our type of association (Chapter 723). There are responsibilities that the Board undertakes in regard to celebrating specific holidays. We look for candidates that enjoy the community and the residents that live here. If you are interested, please submit your resume to Shirley Ashbaugh, Ed Buckley or a coordinator to be named soon. These resumes need to be published in the December and January newsletters.
Upcoming Holiday Events
The BOD is looking to schedule events for the next few months and we need your help. Please volunteer to help organize an event. Paperwork from past events is available to assist you. All you have to do is ask and there are people who will help.
October 31 Halloween (Thanks, Phyllis Congdon, we look forward to seeing what you have planned.)
November 11 Veteran’s Day
November 28 Thanksgiving
December event suggestions – cookie exchange, Light Up Saddle Oak, caroling, ???
December 25 Christmas
December 31 New Year’s Eve
The BOD has looked into finding someone to cater Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, but firms are reluctant to do so on the holiday itself. If you have suggestions or want to help, please talk to a BOD member.

Pet of the Month Contest
The office is running a Pet of the Month Contest. They have a Polaroid camera and want to photograph your pet. Each month a new pet will receive the honors of Pet of the Month; the winner will receive a toy and a treat.

SOC Office Food Pantry
From Kristin: Hey everyone! I wanted to take a minute to let you know about a new development here at Saddle Oak! Shonda and I have put together our new ‘Love your Neighbor’ Food Pantry here in our office. Thank you to those that have used it and to those who have donated! If you or someone you know would benefit from this, but might be a bit shy, call me directly at the office and I will arrange a private appointment for you. We are so lucky to have you all and are excited to lend a hand when we can!
Our Community Manager Kristin has heard your requests and has worked with the gate installation company to find you a solution! We can now get cell phone numbers programmed into the gate that will enable you to allow your guests access without the inconvenience of leaving your home. Please cut out the contact card below, fill it out and drop it off to the office. This will take the office a little bit of time to update the entire property, so please be patient and allow up to 2 weeks for the update to be complete.

In addition to taking prescription medication, it certainly doesn’t hurt to choose and eat foods that benefit health conditions and that taste good too. (Consider it a double whammy or a two-fur – choosing foods that prevent and remedy). If the condition is:

BLOOD PRESSURE (Regulates, lowers) High blood pressure (HBP) is a long-term medical
condition in which blood pressure in the arteries is continuously elevated. If you have high blood pressure, you should pay more attention to what you eat & drink.
Here are some foods that can help lower blood pressure.
Fruits: Apples, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, carambola, cherries, eggplant, longans, oranges, passion fruit, pink grapefruits, pomegranates, squash, strawberries, watermelon
Veggies: Bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, mushrooms, potatoes, radishes, spinach, tomatoes

In honor of Radish Month & National Papaya Month try something new, quick. They’re not just for salads.
Butter-Braised Radishes (serves 4)
They're a delicious accompaniment to roast pork or chicken.
Ingredients:
1-3/4 lb. radishes (about 2 bunches), tops removed & reserved)
1-1/2 Tbs. unsalted butter
2/3 c. lower-salt chicken or vegetable broth
1 Tbs. cider vinegar
1 tsp. granulated sugar or ½ tsp. honey
Kosher salt
Preparation:
Trim radishes & slice them crosswise into 1/3”-thick rounds. Trim & discard stems from a small handful of the tops, wash the leaves thoroughly, pat dry, & then finely chop enough to measure 2 Tbs. (Save the rest of the tops for another use).
In a 10” skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add broth. Bring to a simmer, cover, cook until the radishes are crisp-tender, 5-7 minutes. Uncover, raise the heat to high, & add vinegar, sugar, & ½ tsp. salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid is reduced to a glaze, 2-3 minutes. Garnish with the chopped leaves & serve.

At the July cookout, Kathy Besse made Lumpia – a kind of Filipino egg roll. It made such a hit and so many people asked how to make them that Kathy volunteered to demonstrate how they were made. Below you see the cooks who assure me that they went away satisfied and very full.
