REGION COMMISSIONER’S
REPORT
50 YEARS OF MANLY SEA LIFE SANCTUARY
Ashley Hayes | Senior Operations Manager
I wanted to touch base as I’m sure you may have heard that
sadly after fifty years Manly Sea Life Sanctuary is closing its
doors.
As a Girl Guide myself, my first memory was of a sleepover at
the aquarium.
With only six months to go we want to share as many
memories with Sydney siders as possible.
We are currently offering Girl Guides and Scouts, $5 entry for
the rest of the year—we have a big focus on conservation and
single use plastic reduction.
I look forward to seeing you soon!

SCOUT HUT GETS REPAIRED &
REPAINTED
Steve Evans | Glenn Innes Examiner
The Scout Hall in Glen Innes has just been given a fresh
coat of paint, with plans to renovate the interior.
Gary te Velde of Rotary said Coca Cola gave $25,000 last
year and $8,000 this year to renovate the place. This
benefits the Scouts because it improves their premises for
their own use but also because it makes it easier for them to
let the property to outside bodies and so make a little
money for their own activities.
He said it was important to get the work done because the
longer it was left, the more work would eventually be
needed. The soft-drinks company gave the money and
Rotary organised a group of local tradespeople to carry the
work out.

CORRECTION!
This is not THE Joey Scout Book, but A
singular Joey Scout Book designed and
issued by the Greater Western Sydney
Region, there is no official book for the
Joey Scout section, but this book does list
and inform about all the awards and
opportunities for a Joey Scout of New
South Wales.
The Kalori Apologies for this small
confusion.

Hello Folks,
As expected, all of the Scout Groups in the North West are very
busy with the “Scouting Trails” of their Youth Members. I would like
to start off by thanking each of the Section Leaders & Group Leaders
who selflessly give up their time so we can provide a fun and active
program for the Children that have “Promised to do Their Best”.
BRAVO!
In the course of the last month, I was very fortunate to be invited to
Tamworth Hillvue and present the latest Grey Wolf in the NW to
Cub Scout Noah Morley. A wonderful effort by young Noah.
Hopefully we will see more Grey Wolves in the NW before the end
of the year.
John Thompson, Tarranne & Neil Bryan, John Press and I travelled
to Tenterfield to talk to Parents and Children who might be
interested in joining Scouts – I am happy to mention that 5 Youth
Members (a joey, 2 cubs and 2 Scouts aged children) are now
trialling a model of scouting which is based on the LONES Scout
Group method. The difference is that with 5 youth members in the
same town the kids can get together and talk about different aspects
of Scouting and start to learn about scouting remotely. It is a
promising experiment and if it works, we might see scouting start in
all of the small towns across the North West.
Whilst we were in Tenterfield, we took the opportunity to present
some Certificates of Appreciation to some wonderful older Scouters
in Tenterfield, Kerrie Swain, Barry Brooks, Jim Landers, Ray
Holmes, Brian Dare and the daughter of Mr Tony Kelly. Tony sadly
passed away recently. These volunteers have been selflessly
maintaining the Scout Hall, often out of their own pockets – I am
hoping that these wonderful people will assist us in the Tenterfield
area in the future.
Whilst in Tenterfield we took the chance to duck out to the Surface
Hill Scout Camp – and it was a chance indeed, as we had to pass six
fire trucks and some wonderful Rural Fire Service Fire Fighters who
had just finished saving the campsite from a 3000-hectare bushfire.
We safely got to the camp and the potential for Scouting was seen
immediately. With some work, this camp will be a wonderful place
for a Scout Group to hold a camp. There will be more news on this
as we get the planning for restoring the camp organised.

In last month’s report I asked all the Section Leader to chart out the
award progress of their Youth Members I am still encouraging you all to
do this and monitor the progress of all of the Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and
Venturers. I do not want any of them saying at the end of their time in
their section saying, “I could have gotten my Grey Wolf or my
Australian Scout Medallion…” Encourage your Youth Members to do
their Best at all times.
I hope that all section Leaders have built the New Law and Promise into
their programs and are striving to get their Youth Members
understanding and living by them.
I have dual-roled Mark Shepheard into the role of NW Training. If you
have any Training, based questions please direct them to him. Also if
you could advise Mark of any training that your sections are conducting
so the NW Region Team can be aware of those courses.
I am encouraging all Leaders and Committeemen to read and
understand the Leader Support Guide 23 – Code of Conduct. I am
formalising a method of handling complaints in the NW Region and will
get that information out to the Groups as soon as it is done.
I would ask you all to be mindful that when you are in uniform you are
an ambassador in Scouting and your words and actions should always be
in the best interest of Scouting. It is hard enough recruiting Adults and
Youth to our movement without the additional woe of negative
experiences….
I am not in a position to entertain any breaches of Scout Law or the
Code of Conduct.
Over the last couple of months of this year, I look forward to travelling
out to the Regions of the Group to say hello and meet you Youth
Members, Leaders and Adult Supporters.
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards, Bear
NW

GET SCOUTS
ACTIVE IN 2018!
Scouts NSW will be an eligible provider of the Active Kids Rebate Program
announced by the NSW Government as part of its 2017—18 budget this year.
From 1 January 2018, families with children in Scouts from Kindy to Year 12
can apply online for a $100 voucher per child per year to go towards
Membership Fees. The program will continue for the next four years. What a
great way to start the Scout year!
“Participation in Scouting leads to a lifelong love affair with the outdoors and an
active lifestyle. Many former Scouts continue to enjoy outdoor activities such as
bushwalking, canyoning, abseiling and canoeing. This program will support many
of our families across NSW and I am delighted that we will be an eligible
provider,” said Neville Tomkins OAM JP Scouts NSW Chief Commissioner”
“Scouting unlocks the inner adventure in young people and gets them outside to
explore fun, healthy activities. This voucher program will help reduce the
financial burden on families who want their children to enjoy the Scout
program,” said Scouts NSW CEO Andrew Smith AM
Scouts NSW is working closely with the Office of Sport on the most effective
way to implement the program and integrate it as seamlessly as possible so that
Scouts families can redeem their vouchers easily.
The NSW Government expects to finalise details of how the scheme will operate
by November and Scouts NSW will inform Groups as soon as that information
becomes available.
You can also find out more by visiting the NSW Government’s Active Kids
website www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids
