The Vietnam WarSundays through Thursdays,September 17–28 at 8 p.m.
This landmark series is a 10 part, 18-hourdocumentary film series directed by KenBurns and Lynn Novick. An immersive 360-degree narrative, the series tells the story ofthe Vietnam War as it has never before beentold on film. It features testimony from nearly80 witnesses, including many Americans whofought in the war and others who opposed it,as well as Vietnamese combatants and civil-ians from both the winning and losing sides.
Ten years in the making, the film brings thewar and the chaotic epoch it encompassed vis-cerally to life. It includes rarely seen, digital-ly re-mastered archival footage from sourcesaround the globe, photographs taken by someof the most celebrated photojournalists ofthe 20th century, historic television broad-casts, evocative home movies and revelatoryaudio recordings from inside the Kennedy,Johnson and Nixon administrations.
“The Vietnam War was a decade of agonythat took the lives of more than 58,000
Americans,” Burns said. “Not since the CivilWar have we as a country been so torn apart. There wasn’t an American alive then whowasn’t affected in some way — from thosewho fought and sacrificed in the war, to fam-
ilies of service members and POWs, to thosewho protested the war in open conflict withtheir government and fellow citizens. Morethan 40 years after it ended, we can’t forgetVietnam, and we are still arguing about whyit went wrong, who was to blame andwhether it was all worth it.”
“We are all searching for some meaning inthis terrible tragedy.” Novick said. “In addi-tion to dozens of Americans who shared theirstories, we interviewed many Vietnamese onboth the winning and losing sides, and weresurprised to learn that the war remains aspainful and unresolved for them as it is for us.”
Featured in this special is new, originalmusic written and recorded by AcademyAward-winning composers Trent Reznor andAtticus Ross, along with new music arrangedand performed by Grammy Award-winningcellist Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk RoadEnsemble. The series also includes more than120 popular songs that define the era, including tracks from The Beatles, TheRolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix,Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, BuffaloSpringfield, Otis Redding, Santana, JoniMitchell, The Temptations, Booker T. and theM.G.s, Pete Seeger and more.

Remembering 9/11This Month on Vegas PBS
egas PBS has had a long tradition of airing documentaries about this country’s
military conflicts and telling the stories of those who have bravely served our
country, including Nevada’s own military service members.
In 2007, Vegas PBS produced The Greatest Generation Goes to War – Las
Vegans’ Memories of World War II. In 2015, Vegas PBS hired a full-time veterans coordina-
tor to work with our local business partners, veterans service organizations, active service
members and returning veterans and help connect them to career training and job placement
services in our community. Over the last few
years, we have also produced and aired local
Stories of Service to honor those who have
served as well as to inform and educate our
community on the resources available for mil-
itary families.
As we now mark 50 years since the end of
the Vietnam War, new stories are being told. In preparation for the release of Ken Burns’ new
documentary The Vietnam War airing this month, Vegas PBS conducted several focus groups
with our local Vietnam veterans to begin collecting their stories and to learn how else we can
be of support.
As a result of those group discussions, Vegas PBS is honored to be a part of the opening
ceremony at the Military and Veterans Appreciation Day event at Craig Ranch Regional Park
in North Las Vegas on Saturday, September 9. Beginning at 11 a.m., a Welcome Home Tribute
will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.This event will recog-
nize the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who served and will pay tribute to
all active and retired military personnel, first responders and their families. We invite you all
to come out and visit Vegas PBS at our booth in the veterans services or children’s areas of
the event.
Our military commitment does not stop with this single event.Vegas PBS will launch a new
discussion series for veterans to extend their on-air viewing experience by convening an open
dialogue about the film.Vegas PBS Veterans Coffee and Conversations will be held the third
Friday of each month, beginning September 22 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Vegas PBS.
Refreshments will be provided by Starbucks.
Each discussion event will be facilitated by retired military officers as informal conversa-
tions about the topics raised in the on-air documentary, issues facing local veterans, resources
available in our community or simply honest conversations about having served in the armed
forces or life after military.
To learn more about The Vietnam War documentary, Veterans Coffee and Conversations
or any of the Vegas PBS services for military families in Southern Nevada, please visit

internet and 91 million of us around the world
log on to internet dating sites. Dr. Xand van
Tulleken is one of them. Mathematician Dr Hannah Fry wants to use him as
her guinea pig to test whether the algorithms that dating sites use to match
people actually work. Xand meets the scientists investigating online dating -
and learns what pictures to use and what to write in his profile. He tries out
a 'bot' that has automated a swiping app. Fifty members of the public take
part in some mini-experiments at a date night – and Xand goes on various
dates to test whether the algorithm is better than him choosing randomly.

The Mystery of Murder: A Horizon GuideThursday, September 14 at 10 p.m.What drives people to kill? Science has spent more than 50 years trying to
get inside the mind of murderers to find in what ways they are different to
the rest of us – and also the ways in which they are disturbingly similar.
Michael Mosley opens up the Horizon casebook to discover how scientists
have used extraordinary techniques and experiments to see what goes on
inside the brain of a murderer. He shows how they have created a surprising-
ly comprehensive picture of the different factors that can drive someone to
kill. And he asks the ultimate question – will we one day be able to intervene
to prevent someone becoming a killer?
Martin Luther: The Idea thatChanged the WorldTuesday, September 12 at 8 p.m.On October 31, 1517, a penniless monk named Martin
Luther posted his now-famous diatribe denouncing the
corruption of the medieval world’s largest and most
powerful institution. His forerunners had been burned
alive for similar statements, but Luther had a new tool
at his disposal—the recently invented printing press.
This special chronicles the real life story of the seismic
upheaval that rocked the western world in the early 1500s. Against all odds,
a lonely outcast stood up to the world’s dominant superpower—the Catholic
Church—and won. Narrated by Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), this docu-
drama uses full-scale dramatizations to tell a great adventure story. With
treacherous intrigue, outsized personalities and famous showdowns, it does
not shy away from the darker side of Martin Luther’s story.

Carol Burnett’sFavorite SketchesFriday, September 22 at 9 p.m.
September 11 marks the 50th anniver-
sary of the iconic Carol Burnett Show. In
recognition, we are airing beloved funny
lady Carol Burnett as she presents her
own personally selected favorite moments
from her long-running variety series.
Laugh along with Carol and her hilarious
troupe of regulars — Harvey Korman,Tim
Conway, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle
Waggoner — and special guests Steve
Martin and Betty White. From 1967 to
1978, Americans would gather round
their TV sets to enjoy the wonderful
wacky brand of comedy that was unique-
ly Carol’s own. Carol’s favorite sketches
include some of her unforgettable char-
acters — Starlet O’Hara, Nora Desmond,
Mrs. Wiggins, and of course, Eunice, long
suffering wife of Ed and daughter of Mama,
as well as Tim Conway’s “The Oldest Man”
and Mr. Tudball.

American MedevacSunday, September 24 at 11 p.m.
More than 40 years ago, CBS News journalist Morton Dean and CBS
News cameraman Greg Cooke flew a combat medevac mission in Vietnam
that became their most haunting memory from two lifetimes in journal-
ism. They could not forget the men they met that day — the American
wounded and the men of the 236th Army Medical Detachment who
risked their lives to save them. The story lasted just seven minutes on
the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. But for Dean and Cooke,
decades later, the memories refused to fade, so they set out to find them
and to tell the stories of their lives. The documentary embraces the
bravery of the medevac crew and, by extension, all those who served
their country during that controversial conflict.

Discover the hidden artist in you and join Jerry Yarnell in an all-new Season 23. With acalm and reassuring style, he guides students through fine-art techniques that can be prac-ticed at home. What separates Jerry's new series from his older work is the culminationof his entire career to date (over 30 years) brought to the viewer in the form of his bestwork ever. Using acrylics, water miscible oils and watercolors, Jerry demonstrates step-by-step how to create your own masterpieces in an impressionist style, ranging from land-scapes and wildlife to Western American themes.

FRONTLINE: Abacus:Small Enough to JailThursday, September 14 at 10 p.m. This riveting special tells the saga of the
Sungs — a Chinese-American family who own
and operate Abacus Federal Savings in New
York’s Chinatown. It’s founder, Thomas Sung,
says he started it with the goal to empower
the local community and offer a personal
alternative to big banks. But in 2009, the
Sung’s fired a loan officer after they discov-
ered fraud. They reported the fraud to law
enforcement, but soon found themselves and
the bank under scrutiny.Two-and-a-half-years
later, they were accused of mortgage fraud,
becoming the only U.S. bank prosecuted after
the 2008 financial crash. The film follows how
the indictment and subsequent trial forces
the Sung family to defend themselves — and
their bank’s legacy in the Chinatown commu-
nity — over the course of a five-year legal
battle. Also airs on Tuesday, September 12 at
10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10.
