he beginning of a new year offers new opportunities to start afresh. One

of our corporate resolutions is to strive to serve children better. In the

last two decades, the status of children in our community has deterio-

rated. Approximately half are considered socioeconomically disadvan-

taged and qualify for free or reduced price meals at public schools. In

many of these homes, free over-the-air TV is an educational lifeline.

More than a third of homes with children are “technology poor,” with internet

access only via a single shared smart phone. Alternatively, more than 40 percent live

in a “technology rich” home with high-speed internet access, multiple desktop and

tablet computers, and individual smartphones. As an educational nonprofit television

service committed to serving ALL children with 21st century technology solutions, we

have a challenge!

Our free over-the-air broadcasting services

are remarkably effective. Nielsen data shows

that Vegas PBS weekday children’s programs

command 73 percent of ALL local TV viewing

between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. in homes with a

child aged 2-11.Talk about market share! Yet

research also shows that children watch TV at all hours of the day. With so many par-

ents working second and third shift in the 24-hour Las Vegas economy, a safe and

educational place on TV for latchkey kids is essential.

I am thrilled to announce that Vegas PBS will launch VEGAS PBS KIDS, a 24-

hour children’s educational channel, on January 16. If you use an antenna, it will be

channel 10.3 replacing Vme. It will be Cox Cable channel 113 and CenturyLink Prism

channel 11.The service will also be streamed for internet and mobile device viewing.

Although negotiations are ongoing, neither Direct TV or Dish will carry the service at

its launch.

An important extension of the service will be a large number of enhanced interac-

tive educational games for mobile devices, and parent engagement resources to assist

parents in extending the lessons embedded in the TV programs. Through these new

24/7 services,Vegas PBS will help level the playing field for all children – making our

educational content available to more Southern Nevada families than ever before, and

giving parents (and grandparents or caregivers) more free opportunities to actively

engage with their kids and the digital media they enjoy.

The academic success of ALL children is essential to the long-term strength of our

community and our nation. That is why your annual financial support of free, over-

the-air educational television is so important. As we enter the new year, your support

will be delivering educational services in an even more impactful way through the

nation’s only free 24/7 educational service for families, allowing them to watch and

learn together – anytime and anywhere.

The Year Aheadour member dollars have been well spent on quality programming for the year

ahead. We’ve purchased dozens of new titles that will enhance our local sched-

ule, above and beyond what our national dues to PBS provide. We used your

member funds to purchase programs from independent producers, as well as

national and international distributers like American Public Television and the British

Broadcasting Corporation.

We are pleased with the offers that were available for us to purchase this year. Here’s a

look at just some of what you can look forward to seeing in the coming year. While we don’t

have specific air dates for these titles yet, we’ll be sure to feature them in the magazine, so

keep an eye out for them in 2017!

Arthur Williams is an unusual television tour guide. A former Royal Marine, he was para-

lyzed in a car crash while on leave. But that incident did not deter his passion for flying and

travel. Williams now uses a wheelchair and, in Flying

to the Ends of the Earth, a small prop plane to visit

destinations such as the Himalayas, Australia, Papua

and the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada. The series is

a magnificent melding of travel, culture, adventure and

inspiration.

Inmates find a second chance at life through their

care for and training of puppies to become service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD in

Prison Dogs. In this inspirational tale, three of the selected prisoners battle self-doubt, anger

and regret in their attempt to transform dependent pups into service dogs for injured U.S.

veterans. Bound together by fate, the uniquely vulnerable trio of puppy, prisoner and veteran

come to discover the redemptive power of second chances.

Hopefully you’ve already discovered the newest addition to the Saturday night lineup,

Midsomer Murders. It has replaced Doc Martin, which we learned will not have new episodes

available until sometime in 2018. But fans of the Doc will be able to see the actor who por-

trays him in a whole new light in the 3-part series Martin Clunes: Islands of Australia. We’ve

also purchased the first two seasons of The Coroner. Crime investigations set against a stun-

ning seaside backdrop are at the heart of this entertaining new series that follows a high-fly-

ing solicitor who returns to live and work in the small town she escaped as a teenager. And

last but not least, the popular series Death in Paradise brings us its sixth season this year,

featuring eight new episodes!

We hope you’ll enjoy all the new titles that we’re bringing to you in 2017. Thank you for

your generous donations that make it possible for us to purchase these programs for you, and

for everyone in our community, to enjoy.

Delaware Tribe beaded baldric and an Auguste Rodin "Eternal Spring" bronze

that could have the highest value of the season. But is it authentic?

Midsomer MurdersSaturdays at 7:30 p.m.

Homicide, blackmail, greed and betrayal:

just a taste of what goes on behind the well-

trimmed hedges in this sinister series. Set in the deceptively idyllic fictional

English county of Midsomer, the suspenseful drama is based on the popular

novels of Caroline Graham, featuring an eccentric cast of characters, ubiqui-

tous red herrings and quaint countryside scenery. At the heart of the show is

the perceptive and meticulous criminal investigator Detective Chief

Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles, The Channel Islands At War). Each

story is delivered in two parts. Enjoy two episodes back-to-back each week

so you can follow each storyline from start to finish.

Nazi Mega Weapons: The Eagle’s NestTuesday, January 10 at 8 p.m.

Once Hitler seizes power in 1933, he transforms his Alpine retreat in the

sleepy district of Obersalzberg in Bavaria into a vast mansion called the

Berghof. The area becomes a magnet for the most powerful Nazis, and

Hitler’s Berghof becomes a show piece for

the Reich. Aided by his most trusted assis-

tant Martin Bormann, Obersalzberg is

quickly transformed into Hitler’s own forti-

fied fiefdom, home to 2,000 SS troops and

protected by a high level security system.

FRONTLINE: Divided States of AmericaTuesday, January 17 (part 1) and Wednesday, January 18 (part 2) at 9 p.m.Days before the inauguration of the 45th American president, FRONT-

LINE looks back at events during Barack Obama’s presidency, revealing

deep divisions in our country and examining the America the next pres-

ident will inherit. This two-part program offers an in-depth view of the

partisanship that gridlocked Washington and charged the 2016 presi-

dential campaign, the rise of populist anger on both sides of the aisle

and the racial tensions that have erupted throughout the country.

Drawing on extensive new interviews with White House and

Congressional insiders from both parties, the special digs into the caus-

es of America’s intense polarization and questions how the next presi-

dent and Congress can govern in an era of complex challenges.

Great British Baking Show: ChocolateSunday, January 15 at 6 p.m.

With the finale coming up next week, the semifinalists face the pressure

of one of the most difficult ingredients: chocolate. For the first chal-

lenge, the bakers have three hours to make a chocolate tart: ornate,

intricate and full on flavor. For the technical challenge, the bakers face

a staggered start, and each are given one hour and fifteen minutes to

make a chocolate soufflé. A chocolate centerpiece is set as the show-

stopper. In four hours, the bakers must create an elegant centerpiece

incorporating white chocolate and ensuring the centerpiece is free-

standing and attractive.

Wednesday, January 25 at 10 p.m.This powerful special is an urgent wake-up call about the

national threat posed by Alzheimer’s disease. Many know

the unique tragedy of this disease, but few know that

Alzheimer’s is also a major and rapidly growing public

health crisis. The high-profile documentary illuminates

the social consequences for America unless a medical

breakthrough is discovered for this currently incurable disease. An encore

will air on Sunday, January 29 at 11 a.m. and is followed by Living with

Alzheimer’s and Dementia at noon. This program explores the impact

these diseases are having on individuals, families and communities by weaving

together the personal stories and commentary of those who are living with

dementia, their care partners and leading experts.

FRONTLINE: Trump’s Road to the White HouseTuesday, January 24 at 10 p.m.

Donald Trump was elected the nation’s 45th president in the stunning cul-

mination of a campaign that defied expectations and conventions at every

turn and galvanized legions of aggrieved Americans in a loud repudiation

of the status quo. Hillary Clinton’s quest to make history as the first

female president was thwarted by the 70-year-old celebrity businessman

who had never before run for office. This special explores how Trump

overcame the odds to win the presidency. The film shows how Trump ral-

lied millions of supporters and defeated adversaries, and whom he is tak-

ing into the White House with him.

There are immigrants from everycountry in South America, Mexico,Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indiaand China. Some are citizens, some havegreen cards, some are without documents.Speaking 167 languages, the people, in theircultural, racial and ethnic diversity, are rep-resentative of the new wave of immigrants toAmerica. Some of the issues the film raises-assimilation, integration, immigration andcultural and religious differences-are com-mon to all the major cities of the Westernworld. The film explores the daily life of thepeople in this community and the conflictbetween maintaining ties to traditions of thecountries of origin and the need to learn andadapt to American ways and values.

Great Museums-Sound Tracks: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum Tuesday, January 3 at 8 p.m.This specials takes a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.Opened in 1995, the museum is a spectacular glass pyramid, reflecting the idea that Rockand Roll is a "prism" through which we can more clearly see and understand our culture andourselves. Beginning in the 1950's, Rock and Roll swept the nation, helping break down racialbarriers, change attitudes, promote peace and empower the people. The museums' fascinatingcollection of sights and sounds skillfully recreate the story of Rock from its roots to itsubiquitous acceptance as the soundtrack of our lives. The number of iconic artifacts is dizzy-ing: Muddy Water's primary guitar; John Lennon's Sgt. Pepper uniform; Michael Jackson'sglove; Janis Joplin's porsche; Pink Floyd's The Wall and Mick Jagger's jumpsuits. RepeatsThursday, January 12 at 4 p.m.

The Weissensee SagaSundays at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

This new drama is a sweeping, gripping family saga of conflicting loyalties, love and

betrayal, set behind the Iron Curtain in 1980s East Berlin. Uwe Kockisch (Donna

Leon's Brunetti) stars as Hans Kupfer, a Stasi officer whose youngest son, Martin,

falls in love with Julia, the daughter of a dissident singer. Their courtship threatens

the safety of both families, and sets into motion tumultuous events which play out

over the course of the subsequent decade. Dubbed a cold war Romeo and Juliet, the

drama has drawn huge audiences in Germany where it is hailed as the first television

show to truly reflect life in the GDR. In German with English subtitles. Repeats same

days at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Why We SupportVegas PBS...

We support Vegas PBS because we value educa-tion.

Challenger is a private school offering preschoolthrough eighth grade.

We teach children to find joy and self-worththrough achievement. We also teach them tobecome self-reliant and independent in theirthinking and actions. These are parts of our mis-sion and part of the end we have in mind whenteaching our students.

Challenger School values its own independence, too. We protect it by not accepting any govern-ment money and the intrusion that comes withit. We use our own curriculum and methods.

We are pleased to sponsor children's program-ming because PBS viewers value education.
