Welcome to Summer!Summer used to be a time for television to take a break and relax. Not anymore! Stay tuned this June for a new line up for kids, new films outlining our American experience, new musical discoveries for families with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, new British drama, comedy and mystery—not to mention our continuing commitment to news, science, nature and entertainment. And we are starting it all with an opportunity for you to help us end the fiscal year on solid ground. Tune in May 31-June 8 for a showcase of programs featuring new specials, fan favorites and a chance to support the programs you enjoy every week in their usual timeslots. Check it out!

Highlights include:Celebrate the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll dance music for kids of all ages with host Chubby Checker in 50s & 60s Party Songs (My Music) . From the Eisenhower era explosion of Bill Haley and Jerry Lee Lewis to the 1960s cultural phenomenon of “The Twist” to the youthful frat-rock sounds of the Kingsmen, this is a good-time celebration of classic party music that has spanned generations. This foot-thumping, heart-beating, good-time party premieres Sunday, June 1 at 10:30 p.m.

Gordon Lightfoot in Concert

As rough and familiar as your favorite denim jacket, Gordon Lightfoot’s accessible, folksy hits peppered the airwaves throughout the 1970s. Gordon Lightfoot in Concert—airing Thursday, June 5 at 8 p.m.—is an intimate concert performance taped in 2000 in Reno,

Nevada. Baby Boomers will delight in this retrospective as Lightfoot performs some of his earliest songs and favorite hits. And all viewers can further delight in a special ticket opportunity to see Lightfoot perform live on stage when he comes to The Braden Auditorium on June 24.

Plus a look back at why you fell in love with Downton Abbey in the first place, a second chance to get tickets to see Under the Streetlamp in person, an encore of Dave Clark 5 from Great Performances, and visits from old friends Suze Orman, Wayne Dyer, Dr. Fuhrman and more.

Summer Switch!PBS KIDS is celebrating summer with MORE! More of what kids want to see more often… includ-ing double doses of Wild kratts, Curious George, Daniel tiger and Arthur! Sometimes I muse over the craziest things, like who are the best non-people spokes-people and if WTVP had an animal spokesperson what would it be?

The Chun-King Dragon (showing my age), Morris the Cat, the Taco Bell Chihuahua, Charlie the Tuna (Sorry, Charlie), Tony the Tiger, and, of course, the Gecko are all taken. Then it hit me: with all the changes that are afoot here at WTVP, our spokes-animal could be a chameleon.

One major change in store for WTVP is new management. I will be retiring at the end of August, and a search is underway for a new CEO who will oversee both WTVP and the WILL stations in Urbana for at least the next three years.

Another change is one that won’t be readily visible to many people. WTVP will be taking over master control operations for WQPT, our sister public television station in the Quad Cities. This is all back room technology kind of stuff, and it means that we will take signals from various satellites and other program sources and send them on fiber to WQPT’s transmitter in Orion. This saves some money for them, and it makes a bit for us.

Our joint relationship with WILL continues to evolve with the goal of providing new and exciting local and regional content for both stations at an economical cost. We experimented with some joint fundraising over the last year, and over the coming year we will do more with staff and technology sharing to better serve audiences in Central Illinois.

One change on the horizon that has us concerned is the Federal Communica-tions Commission’s desire to “repack” the television spectrum over the next few years. In plain English, they want to make much more of the electromagnetic spectrum available for wireless device usage (think cell phones, iPads, garage door openers, etc.). To do that, the plan is to take the stations broadcasting in frequencies above a certain channel number (channel 30 or 31, it appears) and move them—or repack them—to

lower channel numbers. So yes, WTVP Channel 47 is well above channel 31 and will be forced to move at some point. For you, it will just mean doing another channel reset on your TV. For WTVP, it will mean a new transmitter, a new wave guide, a new antenna, and perhaps a new tower at a cost estimated at near $2,000,000. The Fed has budgeted some money to compensate the expense, but based on the number of stations nation-ally that will have to move, the amount set aside is likely to be insufficient. Color my chameleon red with anger—and green with envy over the stations that won’t have to move.

Despite all the change, I am happy to report that the high quality of program-ming you expect from Public Television will remain. The titles may change from year to year, but you can still expect to see the best television on television on WTVP. Thank you for making that possible.

Freedom SummerDuring the summer of 1964, the nation’s eyes were riveted on Mississippi. Over 10 memorable weeks known as Freedom Summer, more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in an historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state. Working together, they canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools, and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, with the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national convention in Atlantic City. The campaign was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights work-ers, countless beatings, the burning of 35 churches and the bombing of 70 homes and Freedom Houses.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Murder of Emmett Till), Freedom Summer highlights an overlooked but essential element of the civil rights movement: the patient and long-term efforts by outside activists and local citizens in Mississippi to organize com-munities and register black voters — even in the face of intimidation, physical violence and death.

Freedom Summer premieres on tuesday, June 24, 8-10:00 p.m. as part of American experience.

A new sit-com with amazing star power, vicious tells the story of partners Freddie (Ian McKellen) and Stuart (Derek Jacobi), who have lived together in a small central London flat for nearly 50 years. Constantly picking each other apart and holding on to petty slights for decades, Freddie and Stuart are always at each other’s throats, cracking snide remarks aimed at the other’s age, appearance and flaws. However, underneath their vicious, co-dependent fighting, they have a deep love for one another. Freddie and Stuart are often joined by feisty best friend Violet (Frances de la Tour, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and Ash (Iwan Rheon, “Game of Thrones”), their young, upstairs neighbor.


Music for All AgesMusical Discoveries—a new series for families from Peoria Symphony Orchestra and WTVP—is inviting kids into the magical world of music one instrument at a time. Part performance, part how-to, the series features players from the PSO engaging an audience of kids with demonstrations, explanations and hands-on instruction with the various instruments in their particular sections. The series premieres Sundays, June 22- July 6 at 4:30 p.m. This month’s programs are “Perky Percussion” and “Triumphant Trumpet”. The series is hosted by Maestro George Stelluto and made possible with support from Sid and Flo Banwart.

Great Performances at the Met: La bohème

An exciting young cast stars in Franco Zeffirelli’s lavish produc-tion of Giacomo Puccini’s popular work, the most-performed opera in Met history. Italian star tenor Vittorio Grigolo is the passion-ate poet Rodolfo and soprano Kristine Opolais his fragile lover, Mimì. Susanna Phillips sings the flirtatious Musetta and Massimo Cavalletti is the painter Marcello, led by Italian conductor Stefano Ranzani. The production features a cast of hundreds, an onstage snow scene and a detailed reconstruc-tion of the Latin Quarter in Paris. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato hosts the broadcast. The opera premieres Friday, June 27 from 8-10:30 p.m.

This award-winning production by Kane Farabaugh encores Thursday, June 26 at 8:30 p.m.

They won Olympic gold and dominated competition from around the world. As an award-winning executive producer of Nature, one of the most watched documentary film series on PBS, Fred Kaufman

has captured the marvelous secret life of the wild and brought it to our living rooms.

Now, WTVP and the Peoria Zoo are offering you the chance to meet the man behind the scenes and hear his incredible stories.

Join us for a fun, casual evening of conversation and cocktails on Friday, June 13 at the Zambezi River lodge at the Peoria Zoo. As the sun sets, you and your friends are invited to stroll through the Zoo’s lush Africa exhibit with cocktails in hand and see the animals in realistic replicas of their natural habitats. Kaufman—winner of the trifecta of the wildlife industries’ highest honors—will then entertain us with the behind-the-scenes filmaking of this iconic series. Learn the secrets of how they capture such awesome—and sometimes dangerous—stories from around the world.
