Grand Prix RegionTour — USS Iowa September 14, Saturday

Battleship IOWA Educational Museum & Attraction

Celebrate the American Spirit at the Battleship IOWA the West Coast’s only Battleship open to the public

Your tour takes you on a journey through World War II, the Korean War, Your tour takes you on a journey through World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War to experience the life of a sailor on the lead ship of the last class of gunships. Walk the wood decks of a battleship and see areas such as the 16” guns, 5” guns, missile decks, bridge, mess areas, and the world famous Captain’s Cabin - with the only bathtub installed on a battleship for a President.

IOWA has hosted three Presidents - Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald IOWA has hosted three Presidents - Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush - and numerous dignitaries during almost 70 years of service. Battleship IOWA is located at the L.A. Water-front, former home to the US Navy Battleship fleet prior to World War II and an area rich in maritime history.

After the Iowa, we will have lunch at a nearby restaurant, then continue on to the SS Lane Victory, a World War II merchant marine ship.

We will meet at the gate of the USS IOWA at 9:45am. This is at Berth 87 at the Port of Los Angeles.

Write of Way, by Suesan Way

Canadian Geese

Our big National PCA event, the 2013 Escape to LA, is well underway and many of us are hard at work planning and making progress. Your Grand Prix Region is fully engrossed in the fun of it all. Skip is busily working on tours with Marty Goldsmith, and the Boxster Brothers (Dan and Dave Hockett), Larry Moore and many others. Tours are being prerun and tweaked. Judging by all reports, we expect every-one to have a fabulous time.

Angie Gibson, Immediate Past First Lady of PCA (and Grand Prix member — OK, Kurt and Angie belong to about 12 regions, but ours is one of them) is the event’s illustrious registrar and believe me, she is very engrossed and busy with that job (We are very lucky to have her).

The event Volunteer Coordinator is none other than our own Connie Somers, who would be more than happy to help you find a volunteer job with the event (whether or not you are registering for Escape). We need tour volunteers, people for the Hospitality and Welcome area, Escape Information, etc., especially if you know the Pomona, La Verne, Clare-mont Colleges, Pasadena areas or LA in general — we are looking for help from you.

Escape to LA is an annual long Porsche weekend, and this October Grand Prix and San Gabriel Valley Regions are put-ting on over a dozen tours, multiple banquets, and expect to show some excellent Southern California hospitality to 400-600 PCA vacationers. Event headquarters is the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona, perfect place to launch tours to places like Big Bear, Joshua Tree, Angeles Crest and Mount Baldy.

How about a Cayenne Adventure Tour, a civilized way to experience some of the back roads one might not normally see, even if you live right here in SoCal. This tour is on county maintained dirt roads. There will be a challenge op-tion available (but not required).

The Cayenne tour includes a very civilized upscale lunch, white linen in fact. After lunch it is your choice to tour home on paved roads, or continue the more adventurous dirt route. You must be registered for Escape to be part of these tours (or one of the tour workers). David and Susan Moard and

Vince and Cecelia Knauf have devel-oped the Cayenne adventure.

Escape also offers 3 fabulous tours to the world acclaimed Huntington Library. A private tour before it opens, includ-ing a High Tea lunch, a Self-guided tour of the Collections and Gardens, and a Docent-guided Tour of the Collections and Gardens offered.

So I want to ask, how long have you lived right here in Southern California and have never been to some of these places or gone on some of these tours and drives? Or has it been years since you've been to the Huntington, and you have not seen it since the extensive remodeling. It just might be time for you to take a tour. We are offering all of that and an entire long weekend of socializing, including a Thursday Welcome Party and '60s style Drive-In Movie night and a Saturday cocktail party at the National Hot Rod Museum and a Gala Dinner at the Fairplex Conference Center. This all takes place and radiates from the grounds of the historic LA Country Fairgrounds.

Also in the works is special guest Chad McQueen for our evening events, and I am currently in begging mode with Magnus Walker, LA's own Urban Outlaw 911 junkie, ask-ing him to join us at Escape. He is currently off on another adventure, so we will see.

If you have ever been to a Porsche Parade, you will be thrilled to know that Mark Shevitz has agreed to be our Emcee for our evening get togethers and any other way that he can help.

Please consider joining us — there is lots of information in this issue of the Circuit and, of course, I am available if you have questions.

On the Cover...Last October John Baskett was able to get this photo while on a Grand Prix Region Tour to Borrego Springs and the Anza Borrego State Park.

October is a wonderful time to visit the desert, and this was no exception. Thanks for the great photos John.

September 2013

You will find no shortage of advertisement for upcoming events in this issue of The Circuit. And you don't have to look outside our region for a variety of Tours, Tech Sessions, social and Performance Driving events. We're going to the USS Iowa, Class Auto Center, Stop Tech, Streets of Willow and the Pomona Fairplex, in addition to our annual Holiday Party at the Long Beach Yacht Club.

In addition you'll find information on Tech Tactics, Porsche Escape, Riverside Timeline at Lake Arrowhead and many, many more. And if the advertisements aren't enough, then check out the calendar on page 2. You'll find events all over the Southwest.

As of this writing we've switched our monthly Breakfast Club meetings from Frisco's near the Traffic Circle, to the Tilted Kilt on PCH at 2nd. Friscos was closed for a couple of months during remodeling, and they've reopened with a new name, great food and a wonderful looking place. This probably bodes well for them, but it has presented some dif-ficulties for us. First of all, they are now open for breakfast. Before the only people inside before 11am was us. In addi-tion, the acoustics are much more difficult, there is no PA system, and the main room only holds about 60 of us, not nearly enough.

We had a good run there, and we really appreciate the years of great service we received from George and everyone else. We will miss you.

The Tilted Kilt is just down the road and is not open for breakfast. So, we'll have the whole place to ourselves and the whole parking lot. The food looks very good and they are extremely eager to show us what a great job they can do for us. The price will stay the same that we've had for years — $14.00 for all you can eat buffet. Of course, if you're just having coffee and are hanging with us, there's no cost.

We're also developing a string of special guests to speak with us. November will be the first of these, with Loren Beggs coming from 911 Design. If you follow Porsche racing at all, Loren's shop and driving are no strangers to you. This should be very fun. Loren is bringing a race car as well. We

owe our vice-president, Dave Hockett for setting these up. If any of you is interested in suggesting someone for these presentations, contact Dave (contact info on masthead page).

Well, that's it for now. Suesan and I are heading to Road America for the annual PCA Club Race. No car this time; we're going for the party (and friends).

The first weekend of May saw the Grand Prix Region at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrumph Nevada. We worked with the Las Vegas Region to produce the first PCA Club Race in Nevada since 2008. This was my first trip to this facility. I've heard how much they've built it up in the last few years, and I have to say, I have never been to a track with nicer facilities (and the track was pretty darn good too).

The onsite condos were, well, let's just say that Suesan was smiling. The balcony overlooked the track. It had a full kitchen. The marble shower was big enough for six people, and the bed was very com-fortable. The Clubhouse, which provided three meals a day (three GOOD meals) was extremely nice. Our Chief Driving Instructor, Mike Mulligan, keep saying it was the first time he had been to a track where he felt underdressed.

The 3.1 mile configuration we ran had some very technical sections. There is plenty of runoff, and it would be very difficult to hurt your car going offcourse. Spring Mountain is the first track I've been to that uses a light system instead of corner workers. They also have 3 or 4 people driving off road vehicles staged around the track and 1 or 2 spotters in the tower, where you can see the entire track. The large quads have the ability to tow cars out of trouble if needed. One nice thing about the lights is that they are positioned right in your line of vision where, with human flaggers, you would not be able to place them in those positions. Overall I believe the reaction to this system was positive. I can't wait to get there and drive it myself.

by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast RegionBook Reviews for PorschephilesALF FRANCIS Racing Mechanicby Alf Francis with Peter Lewis, published in 1958 bu G. T. Foulis & Co., LTD, Strand, England

Bruce Herrington

Many books have been written purporting to give an inside view of the motor racing world as it was when racing was a sport not a business, when all concerned were involved for the fun of it. Duncan Hamilton's books give a more or less from the cockpit view, Stirling Moss' books describe life of a racing driver in almost sordid detail; Innes Ireland's All Arms and Elbows gives often hilarious descriptions of the off-duty antics of Formula 1 Drivers. But the hands down best you-are-there first person, how-and-why story of the life at the track and on the road with the Racing Circus, is ALF FRANCIS Racing Mechanic, by Alf Francis.

Alf's story begins in April of 1948, and tells of a bygone era, a time when an individual with one me-chanic, could design and build a compet-itive grand prix car, and the bent valves of an over-reved engine could be success-fully straightened with a hammer, an anvil and a bench vise. The book is full of interesting incidents, such as the time a podium finish was achieved because there was no adequate cooling for a bottle of Coke, and how a plug oiling problem was solved by drilling new drain holes in the cam gallery of an Alta engine.

Alf's story (but in no way his career) ends Saturday May 11, 1956 with a very successful performance (under adverse conditions) of an F2 Cooper-Climax entered by Rob Walker in the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco. This event launched what became Rob Walker's very success-ful independent F1 Team, managed by Alf Frances, as well as putting an Australian by the name of Jack Brabham into the racing limelight for the first time. An interesting side story is how Jack drove Walker's F2 car in the Sunday Grand Prix because he had wrecked Walker's F1 car on the very first lap of Friday's practice!

Alf Francis got into the racing game sort of by the back door (he was hired as the mechanic for a one-car G.P. racing team despite the fact that he'd never even seen a racing car) because he knew the Continent and could speak several lan-guages. His racing experience began working for John Heath and George Abecassis, whose HWM sports cars are still sig-

nificant in vintage racing. This book describes how Alf was intimately involved with the design, construc-tion and development of the first of these cars, and how in December 1949, Stirling Moss obtained his first Team Driver job to work with Alf and HWM.

In those lo-tech days, expediency was the name of the game. ALF FRANCIS Racing Mechanic is full of descriptions of pressing on, such as the time when the Ford V-8 pow-ered transporter ran a big end. Alf, by the side of the road,

dropped the pan, pulled two rods and pis-tons, then sealed the oil ports in the crank with a piece of his leather belt held in place by hose clamps, then proceeded to the next race track on 6 cylinders.

Though for the 1951 season Stirling Moss was the primary driver. Additional drivers on the HWM team included Duncan Hamil-ton, Louis Chiron, Prince Bira, Lance Mack-lin, Richard Millani, Baron de Graffenried, and other famous, or to-be famous, drivers. The book details how Louis Chiron broke a driveshaft at the San Remo (Italy) Grand Prix, walked back to the pits, got Alf to grab a spare and some tools, walk out to the car and exchange driveshafts, enabling Louis to be an official finisher in the race. Such is not the way Grands Prix are conducted today.

After 3 hectic years with HWM, Alf moved on the much more placid one-man team of Peter Whitehead, who raced all over the Continent, specifically for the fun of it. Alf was a founding member of the Moss family racing team, once again building the cars he maintained at the tracks.

In addition to the teams of which Alf was formally a part, his work involved spending time in, and building rapport with, the shops of Cooper cars, Maserati, and Alta engineer-ing, as well as Coventry-Climax engines. The descriptions show significant differences in operating philosophy in the organizations, but a common, very high level of, intensity and focus.

This reviewer finds ALF FRANCIS Racing Mechanic very inspiring - every couple chapters I feel the urge to rush out to the garage and work on my own cars!

This very readable book of 336 5 x 8-1/2 inch pages includes 8 sections of black & white plates. and 6, two-column pages of very thorough index. Used copies can be obtained through Amazon Books for roughly $80.

Spring Mountain continued from page 20...

Another nice feature about staying onsite in the more than nice condos was not having to drive 10-15 minutes into town to stay in a "deodorized" room in a hotel that was more gambling casino than hotel. We thought about driving back to San Diego Sun-day night, but so many people warned us about the terrible traffic heading back to LA Sunday, that we decided to stay in that hotel. Let's just say that when I think of a "tired" hotel, that one is hard to beat.

One very special feature of this event was that Patrick Long came for two days to do some corner coach-ing and to speak at our Friday and Saturday night dinners. This guy is one good speaker. We learned a lot about the time and disappointment it took for Patrick, as an incredibly gifted driver, before he got the opportunity to make it to the big leagues, and then it was more being in the right place at the right time. He was ready to pack it in and head home.

Patrick spent Saturday going to different turns on the track observing and taking notes on many of the drivers, then meeting in a classroom to discuss what he observed. It's not every day that you can have a Patrick Long coaching you. I want to convey a special thank you to Patrick. We thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity.

When we drove home Monday morning I kept think-ing about how fortunate Nevada PCAers are to have

such a fantastic facility so close. They've since added about 2 more miles. There are such a variety of configurations that they can have two full 3+ mile track events going on at the same time without interfering with each other. How many places can say that?

Editor: I've been carrying this story for awhile, waiting for a nice spot it The Circuit. When I started laying it out a few days ago, I was very surprised to discover that I've been sitting on it since last October. My apologies to all of you who went on this obvioiusly fun trip, and especially to Marty Goldsmith (who created and led the tour), John Baskett (who wrote the story and provided photos), and Art Day (who also provided photos).

The Grand Prix Region's Driver's Delight Tour to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park took place Saturday and Sunday, October 20-21. For those of you who love to drive the twisties, this was the drive for you! Led by our indomitable tour leader Marty Goldsmith, partici-

Driver's Delight Tour to Anza-Borrego Desert State Parkpants rendezvoued in Banning and drove the Pines-to-Palms Highway up the San Jacinto Mountains to Idyllwild, where we enjoyed browsing, shopping and lunch in the crisp fall air.

After an excellent lunch at the Gastrognome, the group continued through the low desert to Desert Hot Springs. Then a short run through the Coach-ella valley brought us to the overnight destination, the Borrego Springs Resort. The resort incorporates a comfortable inn, a fine dining room, a 27 hole golf course, six lighted tennis courts, two swim-ming pools, and a new spa.

Grand Prix members enjoyed a group dinner in the hotel dining area. Entrée choices in-cluded Prime Rib with Idaho baked potato, Corn- crusted Breast of Chicken with Pob-lano potatoes, or Grilled Salmon Fillet with rice. Dinners came with salad, vegetable du jour, rolls, beverage, and dessert. The next morning's breakfast was a wonderful buffet.

After breakfast we visited Anza Borrego State Park before heading back via Julian, where many of us enjoyed outstanding apple pie along with some breath taking views and great weather. Don’t miss this trip next time!

Tech Notes from Tony Callas & Tom PrineThe IMS Class Action Lawsuit (courtesy of Callas Rennsport)

Many of you have received a notification through the mail regarding a proposed settlement agreement for the class action lawsuit Eisen vs. Porsche Cars North America, Inc., (PCNA). This class action lawsuit covers only 2001 thru 2005 Porsche Boxster and 911 models in which their engine suffered an Intermediate Shaft (IMS) failure that caused internal damage and required repairs or replacement of the engine. Please note that all Turbo, GT2 and GT3 models are excluded.

The settlement is meant to provide monetary reimburse-ment to all owners who had to pay out of pocket to repair or replace an engine under these circumstances and where the owner was not covered by any warranty provided by Porsche or any aftermarket warranty company at the time of the IMS failure and resulting damage. Also, the proposed class action settlement agreement identifies a protocol relative to how to respond to future IMS failures in the cars covered by the settlement agreement.

For those of you that purchased your 2001 to 2005 Boxster or 911 new or through a Porsche dealer’s Approved Certi-fied Pre-Owned (ACPO) program, there is a high likelihood that you have already received the letter and details of what you need to do in order to file a claim. Our concern is for those current and previous owners or lease holders of 2001 through 2005 Boxster/911 models that were not contacted due to selling their car, moving out of state or for some other reason that made it difficult to identify and or make contact with you.

The notification letter provides information about who is eligible to receive a reimbursement as part of the class action, what is covered and what is not. The class action lawsuit has specific conditions and timeframes that you must respond to or you will be excluded from any reimbursement that you may be entitled to. Those of you that did not receive any official notification, we are providing the website address and telephone number at the end of this article where you can obtain the settlement documents, claim forms and contact information for the class action attorneys involved. If you are eligible for a reimbursement payment, a completed claim form with all supporting documentation describing the work done and validating all of your vehicles information plus proof of payment (such as credit card statements or cancelled checks, etc.) proving that you paid for the work, all must be postmarked and in the mail no later than October 15, 2013. Individuals that wish to, can opt out of the class action lawsuit, however in doing so they will not benefit from reimbursements for past or future IMS failures as defined in the settlement agreement. Opting out does provide the

ability to bring a separate lawsuit against PCNA because you are no longer bound by the settlement terms of the class action agreement. Those thinking about opting out of the settlement should seek the advice by legal counsel but keep in mind that you must file documents for opting out by October 15, 2013 or you will be bound by the conditions of the settlement agreement.

The official notification document provides a settlement ben-efit or payment and reimbursement schedule which identifies specific percentages of the class member’s approved repair cost which will be paid by PCNA. The percentage is based on the vehicle mileage at the time when the IMS failure took place and how or from what source the owner purchased his or her car. This purchase source is broken down in three cat-egories; a New Vehicle Purchaser, an ACPO purchaser and a Used Vehicle Purchaser not purchasing ACPO. Addition-ally, the settlement also provides for a reimbursement up to $200.00 to cover out of pocket towing and rental car charges incurred while the vehicle was being repaired. Receipts and proof of payment must be included in your claim.

This lawsuit and settlement is complex and in no way is it possible to identify all the issues, requirements and specific language included in the proposed Settlement Agreement here in a few short paragraphs. Our primary goal in provid-ing this information is to help notify those who may benefit from the proposed settlement agreement. What is clear is that if you had an IMS Failure in a 2001 through 2005 Boxster or 911 and you paid out of pocket for the repair, you must file a claim before October 15, 2013 to receive some reimbursement for those expenses.

If you have questions, contact the office of Class Attorney Stephen M. Harris at 1-818-547-5100 or E-mail [email protected]. Also, visit www.imsporschesettle-ment.com for further information and to view and obtain all the pertinent documents.

Still, for those of you that own a 9X6 or 9X7 Boxster or Car-rera, it is important to remember that an IMS failure can be averted completely through the preventative replacement of the IMS bearing or for those that have a M97 the removal of the IMS bearing’s outer grease seal for better lubrication. If either of these procedures are performed to an engine prior to the severe deterioration of the IMS bearing, these proce-dures can potentially save your engine.
