Mount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope saw first light in 1908. Funded by Andrew Carnegie, the telescope was the world’s largest until the Mount Wilson 100-inch was completed in 1918. During the WWI years, Harlow Shapley used it to overturn the long accepted view that the sun was at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. Shapley used the great light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble, Walter Baade and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Today, the 60-inch is the largest telescope in the world devoted entirely to public viewing of astronomical objects. Its large light collecting mirror and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson provide an unrivaled and unique experience. The Porsche Club – Grand Prix Region is pleased to announce that we have reserved a very special evening of viewing at the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory 60-inch telescope. Due to popular demand, we are returning for our second visit. We are limited to the number of people that can attend a viewing session, so space is at a premium. If you are interest-ed, please register as soon as possible. Registration opens April 4, 2016 and closes on May 6,2016. Attendees will be chosen on a first come first served basis, and there will be a waiting list. Minimum age for attendance is 12 years old.

It points out to me that we are all PCA. We’re a very big club. I’ve met some very nice folks from the other regions and it’s great to participate in other regions' events, as well as ours. And it’s nice to see people from the other regions at our events.

Our Breakfast Club, at the Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach, gives us all a chance to get together, enjoy breakfast with our friends and view all the beautiful Porsches displayed in the parking lot. This month we’ll be starting something that was suggested by Dick Douglass. Orange Coast Region has established a “Cone Zone” where they feature a specific Porsche model every month. We think it’s a terrific idea, and would like to start our GPX Cone Zone in April with 993’s. We will publish the featured model for the next month in every issue of The Circuit. We will also include it in our email announcements. There are a limited number of parking spaces that we will reserve for the fea-tured model every month on a first come, first served basis. But, there will always be plenty of regular parking for all of our Porsches. We also have a terrific selection of GPX items and apparel in our fantastic Goodie Store. Please join us on the first Saturday of each month.

This month I’m excited to be part of the California Festival of Speed which is “The Largest Porsche Event in the South-west.” This is my 4th year in a row and I am really looking forward to this Zone 8 event. This year the Festival runs April 8 – 10 and PCA is looking forward to welcoming POC back to the Festival this year.

The 3 days of the Festival will include PCA Club Racing, Time Trials, & Track Tours. We’ll also have our Vendor Row and Food Court with more LA food trucks returning. There will be Porsche Corrals and a Porsche Swap Meet with much of the fun being on Saturday and Sunday. There will be track tours on Friday. This year there will also be a Porsche Timeline of 911 Turbos. And just announced, the BMW Club will be doing a Teen Street Survival Course on Sunday.

As always we look forward to seeing you around the region.

We have some very talented members in our midst. One of our newest advertisers is member Mark Aguirre, owner and operator of Epic Auto Detailing. Mark will join the Air Force One (AFO) Detailing Team for the second straight year in Seattle, but this time for the biggest and most presti-gious historic aircraft detailing project on record. This year the team will be contributing to Boeing’s 100th Anniversary and the opening of the Seattle Museum of Flight’s new Air-park Pavilion with a 2-week long mega-detailing event April 11 through April 23.

The team continues their preservation of the original Air Force One presidential jet. This effort started 14 years ago when the Bush administration asked about restoring the Boeing 707-120, the first Air Force One jet, which was a fly-ing Oval Office for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, John-son, and Nixon.

This year the team will also preserve and restore 15+ price-less Boeing aircraft for their 100th Anniversary celebration. Included in this set is a legendary WWII Boeing B-29 Su-perfortress bomber known as T-Square 54. This workhorse is scarred with holes where fifty-caliber bullets raked her aluminum skin flying sorties over the Pacific and Japan.

Chosen by Master detailer, trainer, and mentor, Renny Doyle of Attention to Details & Detailing Success in Big Bear Lake, California, Mark and the team are no strangers to cleaning, restoring, and protecting multi-million dollar museum treasures and rare, exotic, and classic vehicles of all kinds.

“This is by far the most exciting and most challenging proj-ect the Museum of Flight has offered us and I am honored to be tasked with such a prestigious and unprecedented oppor-tunity,” says Aguirre. “For the Centennial celebrations, Boe-ing wants all their iconic aircraft to look as close as possible to how they looked in their original glory. It will be a daunt-ing task since many of these planes have been on display out on the tarmac, exposed to Seattle’s torrential weather up until now. With the new Airpark Pavilion Hangar now open to house them, we are contracted to maintain them over the next five years.”

All AFO Team members, like Mark, pay their own expenses and donate their time and skill to the massive project.

So, evidence has it that Mark knows detailing! He has writ-ten two articles for The Circuit, one of which appears in this issue. These are intended to help you with making your car look the best it can. At the last Breakfast Club I noticed Jeff still had some 10% off coupons for Epic Auto Detailing. Maybe you should pick up one of those and see what Mark can do for your car.

Speaking of Breakfast Club, we have added a new feature - The Porsche Alley Cone Zone. For Breakfast Club we will cone off a set of prime parking spaces at Beachside Grill. Each month we will designate specific Porsche models for Cone Zone parking. If you own the designated model, please drive it to Breakfast Club, park in the Cone Zone, and share your stories with all the other Porsche enthusiasts in atten-dance. The selected models for several upcoming months are shown on page 22 of this issue. Please back into the parking spaces so Jimmie can get some great shots for The Circuit.

As I sat down to write this month’s column, I started think-ing about the last few events that we’ve had, that I was able to take part in. I’ve been a PCA member for over 13 years now and have been able to participate in, as well as coordi-nate, many of our club events over the years.

At the end of February, we were treated to a docent led tour of the elegant Mullin Automotive Museum. We did that event jointly with Santa Barbara Region. It was my first time there and I was very impressed with the French cars on dis-play, as well as the beautiful building housing all those cars.

In March, I finally had the opportunity to attend our “Day Away From Work” at the Streets of Willow. This was my first time at this event. This was an extremely organized event. From the instructor’s meeting, the driver’s meeting, and the staging of the groups, it ran like a well-oiled ma-chine. Thank you to Suesan Way Carter, Skip Carter, and Dan and Dave Hockett for being the pros that you are. You put together a terrific spectacle of racing.

Also in March, we ran our 3rd annual Santa Monica Moun-tains Fun Run to Paradise Cove. I have been doing this Tour for the last 10 years. I change up the route every year. This year I ran into a challenge in that the original route that I planned was going to be disrupted by an event on one of the roads. At the last minute I picked an alternate route that was enjoyed by all. It’s great to have a “Plan B.”

There was an underlying theme to all these events. PCA has used the tagline “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” These events are a perfect example of that. Yes, we have fun with our cars, but the friends and relationships we make being a part of this club are the icing on the cake.

The other aspect of all our events is the cross-regional par-ticipation of our Zone 8 members. At each of these events there were members from the following regions: Santa Bar-bara, San Diego, Los Angeles, Central Coast, Las Vegas, Cal Inland, Orange Coast, and of course, our very own Grand Prix Region.

Now, not all these regions participated in all three events, but we drew members from all these regions and some of these regions were represented at each one of our events.

Porsche provides the cars, we provide the fun!

Grand Prix Region held their biannual "Day Away from Work" event March 14. Jimmie Mitchell captured the images on the cover showing driv-ers enjoying the Streets of Willow track. The event was a combination of DE and Autocross. Read about it from the perspective of our Chief Driving Instructor in this issue.

GPX Visits the Mullin Automotive MuseumThe inaugural event of the Walter’s Porsche Tour Series was staged by the Grand Prix Region (GPX) on February 27th. Twenty five cars and thirty one people had an enjoyable run from Malibu to Oxnard on a beautiful day along the coast. Arriving at the famous Mullin Museum, the Long Beach group met up with members of the Santa Barbara Region who had planned their tour for the same day. While the Mullin collection features French vehicles from the inter-war period, the observers this day had a decided Teutonic orientation.

The GPX people were collected into a separate group and were led through a logical progression of outstanding classic designs by a very knowledgeable docent. He was able to explain not only the origination and intent of the different cars, but how they came to the attention of Peter Mullin, the owner of the collection. He pointed out the differences between restored vehicles and those which were simply preserved. The differences are not only physical, but esthetic.

The museum houses an assemblage of Delahayes, Delages, Hispano Suizas and Voisins, but the emphasis is Bugatti. Our tour started upstairs in a replica of the office of Ettore Bugatti featuring

period art deco furniture and fixtures, many of which were from the family. The Bugatti family members were artistic and many of the auto-themed pictures on the wall were painted by his son and daughters.

Creativity was the key word as most classics of that period were unique combinations of chassis from one company supporting a body from a coach builder. It was virtually a one-off effort to meet the customer's whims such as the "Torpedo" which had a wooden body fastened with copper rivets and even an extra windshield like a classic Chris Craft in front of the "Rumble Seat".

Performance was always a priority as Bugatti produced many racing cars. The street cars were a utilitarian body on a race car chassis. The restored

cars were right-off-the-showroom-floor pieces of art while the preserved ones proudly showed their miles with patina

and rough edges. The epitome of an extreme preserved Bugatti is the "Lady in the Lake" - a 1925 model resurrected from the bottom of Lago Maggiore on the Italian-Swiss border after 75 submerged years. The water had taken its toll on one side while the side that settled into the mud fared much better.

story: Alan Johnson & Marty Goldsmithphotographers: Boyd Krueger, Charlie Carchedi, Jim Lenahan, Jimmy Peter, Kesse Ho, Marty Friedman, Marty Goldsmith, Omar Menchavez, Ron Walecki

There was also a collection of the Schlumpf brothers that could be in a category of super-preserved. Even as their company was sliding into bank-ruptcy they kept buying cars num-

bering into the 100's and hiding them from creditors and employees that were not being paid. Some of the cars look

like they were being held together by what we would these days call duct tape.

Some cars had a shine and pedigree of a pure-bred. Others had a dirt under the fingernails, but job well done look.

Either way, the Mullin is a collection not to be missed. It was a wonderful day and a fitting event to inaugurate the GPX Wal-ter’s Porsche Tour Series.

GPX Day Away From Work

For the March 14 event, in a break from tradition, Dan and I drove out from home at 5am, arriving at Streets of Willow racetrack just before 7am. We had a social engagement on Sunday evening that could not be missed (Peter Frampton acoustic show at the Fox Performing Arts Theater River-side). It was worth the hectic schedule. Both events turned out great. Because of this time constraint we just drove out in the Cayman and left Dan's motor home with all our track support gear, tools, and racing tires at home. Rain was forecast for LA on Monday so rain tires (RE-11) were the selection of the day. After arrival I found that Bruce Colby had already laid out the track nicely. So I proceeded with my briefings with corner workers, instructors, and finally the All Drivers Safety Meeting.

We ran 4 DE continuous lapping sessions with a final timed AX session at 3pm. Everything went smoothly all day and drivers played nice. This is such a great learning track with lots of elevation changes, corners of every variety, banked sections, and enough straightaway to get the adrenaline pumping. We had 78 drivers with a good mix of green newbies, intermediate drivers and veteran instructors. Cars ranged from bone stock 944s, vintage 60s era 911s, lots of modern 987, 997, 981, 991, 4 spanking new Cayman GT4s, and a few fully race-prepped cars from Vision Mo-torsports. We also had several professional driving coaches working the right seat on track including Dwain Dement from Vision Motorsports, Ian Hislop from Spring Mountain Motorsports Park, and our own PCA Zone 8 CDI (Chief Driving Instructor) Scott Mann - a whole lotta talent out there teaching drivers the finer points of car control and safe handling skills at the limit.

New for this year was a grand experiment with a GPS tim-ing system that we plan to expand to other events, such as TT (Time Trials). It worked out well with very few glitches and we gathered data for further improvement in capturing and quickly recording lap times. A big thanks to GPX Vice President Bob Fulton for logging our lap time results, Zone 8 Autocross Chair Kathy Smalley and Bill Thorp for setting an AX starting gate feature and assisting with lap time re-cording, Tech Chair Dan Hockett and Zone 8 Rules Chair Russell Shon for mounting timing devices in the grid, and Grid Marshall Alfred Abken for handling the starting line. This stuff just doesn’t work without our many worthy vol-unteers who press in and get it done. We estimated about 40

cars would run timed laps and it would take 1.5 hrs. Well, 38 cars ran timed laps and it was nearly 1.5 hours exactly. Yay!

Results: TTOD (Top Time Of the Day) was OCR hot shoe Steve Eguina post-

ing a 1:12.13 in his shiny new well-sorted Cayman GT4. He basically wiped the gators with the rest of us driving street cars. Second at 1:15.05 was Russell Shon from SDR in a Red Lotus (with a few tweaks), third with 1:15.46 was Paul Tordella from GPX in his very fast 991C4S, and I managed to squeak a 4th place at 1:15.53 in my essentially stock 2.9L Cayman on stone cold rain tires, with the sun in my eyes <8^) . Dwain from Vision did not run his fully prepared race cars for AX laps and left the rest of us to our good clean fun.

All in all a great day at the track. Let's do this again in Oc-tober!

Keeping the car’s interior clean and sanitary makes driving your vehicle enjoyable and let’s passengers know you take pride in your ride. Below are tips on how to keep your interior looking clean and new.

Carpet and Seat CareYour car’s carpet and mats get the most abuse. They accumulate debris and grime from your shoes. To help keep your carpet and floor mats looking good it’s best to vacuum them regularly and do a Light Cleaning 3-4 times a year.

Your car’s seats get the second most abuse. The driver’s seat is the worst. If you have a back seat and haul kids around it, too, takes a lot of abuse. Your seats should be vacuumed regularly and cleaned 3-4 times a year.

Carpet and seats that are moderately dirty can usually be cleaned with all-purpose cleaner, a brush and water. Below I outline the steps for how to do a Light Cleaning. If the carpet and seats are heavily soiled and stained it’s best to have a professional detailer use a Steam Cleaner or Extractor. Steam cleaning is recommend in most cases as it does not leave any residue deep down below the fabric or in the carpet padding.

Light Cleaning of Carpet and Seats (Fabric & Vinyl, for Leather see below)Start by vacuuming all the seats then work your way down to the floor mats and carpet. Vacuum the trunk last. When all mats, carpet, and seats are vacuumed, they are ready for cleaning.

1. Clean the seats first then move on to the carpet. 2. Clean one section at a time. For example, if cleaning the seats clean the seat bottom cushion first, followed by the back

support, followed by the seat sides, followed by the headrest and so on. If cleaning the carpet, clean the front driver side, followed by the passenger side, followed by the rear and so on.

3. Spray the all-purpose cleaner onto surface let dwell for 1-2 minutes then lightly scrub with the appropriate brush (carpet brush for mats and carpet, upholstery brush for seats). For vinyl seats use a microfiber towel to wipe down after scrub-bing with brush.

4. For the more soiled spots, spray additional cleaner, dip brush in warm water and lightly scrub again.5. After scrubbing all surfaces, vacuum up lose debris and excess water with the wet dry vacuum. For example, after clean-

ing the driver seat, vacuum before moving on to the next seat. After cleaning the driver side front carpet, vacuum before moving on to the next section of the car. Vacuuming after scrubbing is not necessary on vinyl.

6. Before reinstalling the mats let both the carpet and mats dry. Keep the windows down to speed up interior drying process.

Deep Cleaning of Carpet and SeatsDeep cleaning requires either a commercial steamer or carpet extractor. A steamer is best for surface stains and an extractor is used for deep stains like spilled coffee or soda. An extractor sprays hot water and soap into the carpet or seats then its extracted (sucked up). A steamer blows steam into the carpet or seats and is scrubbed at the same time with a diaper wrapped brush head. This method also sanitizes the vehicles interior. Deep cleaning should be done by a professional auto detailer.

Interior Trim CareInterior trim (dashboard, doors, center console, etc.) are usually made up of plastic, leather, rubber, vinyl, etc. and can be cleaned with all-purpose cleaner or an all in one product. After cleaning trim apply a protectant to give it a “like new” look and to protect it from UV rays. It’s recommended that you clean and protect your interior trim 2-3 times a year.

Light Cleaning of Interior TrimWhen cleaning your interior trim, start with the side doors and move on to the dashboard, steering column, glove box, center console, etc.

Car Interior Care Tips by Mark Aguirre owner/operator of Epic Auto Detailing www.EpicAutoDetailing.com and GPX member 1. Clean the doors by spraying the cleaner directly onto the door panels then wipe down with an all-purpose microfiber

towel. In tight areas like the dashboard and steering column, spry the cleaner onto the microfiber towel first then wipe the surface clean.

2. To remove scuff marks use APC (all-purpose cleaner) and magic eraser. Apply a small amount of APC to the magic eraser and scrub scuff mark with the magic eraser.

3. After all the interior trim is cleaned, apply an interior protectant by applying it to a microfiber towel then wiping onto the surface.

Deep Cleaning of Interior TrimDeep cleaning requires a commercial steamer. Steam is blown into tight areas like air vents, window seals, door handles, com-partments, ashtrays, etc. to remove debris. Flat surfaces are scrubbed with steam and a brush. Again, steam cleaning should be done by a professional detailer.

Leather Seat CareWell cleaned and conditioned leather seats give the interior that extra pop. There are several quality leather cleaners, con-ditioners and protectant products available from all-in-one maintenance products to deep cleaning products. Leather seats should be cleaned and conditioned 2-3 times a year.

Light Cleaning of Leather SeatsLeather seats that are moderately dirty can be easily cleaned, conditioned and protected with an all-in-one cleaner. These cleaners are simple to apply and will give your seats that extra pop plus more. When using these cleaners clean one seat at a time and one section at a time.

1. Spray all-in-one leather cleaner onto leather seat and let product dwell for a few minutes then wipe surface clean. 2. For tight areas spray product onto a microfiber towel and wipe and clean surface. 3. For stains scrub lightly with a leather brush and leather cleaner.

Deep Cleaning of Leather SeatsLeather seats that are dry, cracked and caked with dirt and grime are best cleaned by a professional detailer. Seats in poor con-dition can be brought back to life and like new again by using a combination of steam, leather cleaner and rejuvenating oil.

Chemicals and ToolsThese chemicals and tools can be purchased from most online auto detail supply stores, Amazon or Costco.

by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast RegionBook Reviews for Porschephiles Bruce Herrington

The engineering of the cover display is Porsche quality. Oth-erwise, the only Porsche content is a small shot of a Cayenne V8 stuffed into the engine bay of a “34 Ford”. All in all, this is not the book for the compulsive Porsche purist. But for anyone who is enamored by the look of cars, or of their components, this is a must have book.

Page after page of awesome portraits, not 'pictures', portraits of hot rods, are interspersed with textual inter-ludes about the people who make these cars as spectacular as they are. The photography is as superb as the fabrication (both bodywork and mechanicals) which it illustrates. It is truly a "picture book" with page after page of color photographs, and an envelope in the back containing four 8x10 prints suitable-for-framing, as they say. Actually, this reviewer is as enthusiastic about framing the "cover" of the envelope as about any of the contents!

ART of the HOT ROD collector's edi-tion is arranged in 20 chapters, each one expressing the story/philosophy of a particular hot rod builder and introducing a section of photos of the type of product with which that individual deals. This reviewer finds the stories fascinating, giving the book considerable "it's not the cars, it's the people", value. Somewhat frustrating is the fact that the "creator" may eloquently describe the genesis and design characteristics of a very interesting car that is not included in the following illustrations. There is some backhanded Porsche content in that one of the builders profiled is Don Orasco, once a significant presence in vintage Porsche racing. Interestingly, it looks like Scarabs, not Spyders, in the background of his shop picture.

The machines shown are truly masterpieces of automotive art, mostly perfection of original production design, not exotic creations, but the workmanship is spectacular. Some of these cars give new meaning to "sanitary" mechanical

components. It is mind-blowing to contemplate the hours and hours of meticulous work done on detailing individual engines or suspensions. For the concours types these are 301 point cars!

Most vehicles shown are recogniz-able as to their basic origins but there are some truly exotic creations illustrated, such as the "1935 Ford" Aeroliner which looks like it is a mile long and a foot high with turbo-fan wheels. Other cars, and pickups, look like mere restorations to original, unless you notice the wheels or get to see under the hood. And then there are some "lakesters" and some olde tyme dragsters with history. A full page picture can be devoted to the sweep of a fender, a half-page to a "billet" suspen-sion upright - the list of fascinating pictures in this book just goes on and on. Some of the pictures are so "artistic" that one could visualize them on the wall of an art museum

with, say, Andy Warhol or Alexander Calder in his less flam-boyant period.

Masterpiece of the printing art, in many ways, the many two-page spreads match perfectly across the spine. All in all, an awesome book. If you like looking at cars and want an awesome conversation piece for your coffee table, this book is a must have! There is a one page Index, though somewhat re-dundant with the Table of Contents, and an interesting sort of an appendix that describes how these "studio portraits" were shot in the field.

ART of the HOT ROD collector's edition is hardbound with laminated printed cover and contains 248, 10-1/2 x 12 inch pages, with 350 artistic illustrations, almost all in color. It should now be available for $60 from your favorite book-seller (ask for it) or from http://www.motorbooks.com .
