a letter from Pastor craig

Kristin Kurzejeski and Lyle Belleque…not household names yet but soon to be. Kris and Lyle are welcomed new relationships in my life and in the life of Roseville Lutheran.

Lyle will be with us for a year as our intern. Kris will join us in mid-September as our Pastor of Spiritual Care. Thanks to a very generous gift to the congregation, we are able to support the half-time call to Kris for the next three

years. Her gifts for ministry are a great match for our min-istry needs of pastoral care, visitation and preaching.

I have truly enjoyed getting to know these two very unique and gifted individuals and I count it a privilege to work alongside them in the coming year. Their entrance into my life took me back into my own journey with RLC, both as your intern and as a first call pastor.

It was 1974-75 that I went from being your custodian to becoming the intern. Cindy and I moved our family into the parsonage which sat fac-ing Fernwood – about where the church office sits now. That year with you was so wonderful and rich. We were loved deeply into the heart of this congregation. You helped shape my ministry in more

ways than you will ever know. I pray that Lyle and his fami-

ly’s experience will prove to be very similar. Congregations do play a very valued part of pre-paring pastors for ministry! I can’t emphasize that enough! You are helping prepare this vessel to carry the Gospel mes-sage of Jesus Christ.

As we await Kris’ arrival and her ordination, I was recalling my own ordination. The framed reminder hangs on my wall and stares at me every day. October 24, 1976, Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Evangelical Lutheran. It was an incredible day with my family and home congregation surrounding me. Pastor Reu-ben Groehler and Myron Nys-ether presided at the service. Promises were made, prayers offered, hands layed on, stole

placed on my shoulders – all added up to God calling me to do what I hadn’t planned to do when I was much younger.

Kris’ ordination will be August 22, 2010 at her home congregation in Trimont, Min-nesota. She too will have a ser-vice very similar to mine. As I look at Lyle and Kris, I remind myself what God calls us to do. He also equips us to perform. The calling as pastor is one that is extremely humbling, and yet the calling is also very demanding. What I have come to believe and greatly appre-ciate about this calling, is the great joy and privilege to pro-claim and witness the greatest word that the world will ever need to hear – the Gospel. It is a word beyond all others. To lift up Jesus both in times of sorrow and celebration is a

great honor. The words printed on my

Certificate of Ordination are my daily reminder-

“Craig H. Hanson… having acknowledged that he accepts the Holy Scripture as the word of God and adheres to the Confessions of the Lutheran Church, has been ordained a minister of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Thanks be to God. Thanks be to Jesus the Savior. Thanks be to the Holy Spirit who calls, gathers and sheds the light of truth upon us.

Pastor Craig

WHAT DOES THRIvENT CHOICE MEAN TO ROSEvILLE LUTHERAN CHURCH? …MINISTRy!

Thrivent Choice is a new charita-ble grant program that lets Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members help choose where Thrivent distrib-utes charitable funds. This means that you can help RLC fund and grow ongoing ministry simply by designat-ing RLC! Eligible members of Thrivent will receive a letter with information on their designated Choice Dollars and details on how they can help direct Choice Dollar funds. When you desig-nate RLC to receive Choice Dollars, you are supporting the life-changing gift of ministry through our congregation, and all those we serve in the name of Jesus Christ!

Designating funds is quick and easy. You can visit www.thrivent.com/thri-ventchoice or call 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and say “Thrivent Choice” at the prompt. You may also call your Thrivent Financial Representative for more information. Your choice makes a difference. Please find Roseville Luther-an Church on the list of eligible organi-zations and make a one time recurring direction to fund RLC’s ministry on an ongoing basis.

1 Timothy 6:18-19Command them to do good, to be

rich in good deeds, and to be generous

and willing to share. In this way they

will lay up treasure for themselves as a

firm foundation for the coming age, so

that they may take hold of the life that

is truly life.

RLC RECEIvES ELCA DONOR RECOGNITION

Recently, Roseville Lutheran was rec-ognized for its continued support for missionaries and ELCA international programs. It is through your giving that RLC can continue the support of our missionaries and world relief.

Here is the recognition RLC received from this event:

Our first recognition this evening will

be of Roseville Lutheran Church in Ros-

eville, Minnesota. Because two of the

three pastors on staff are on sabbatical at

this time, the congregation was not able

to send a representative. We will, none-

theless, recognize this congregation’s

generous gifts to mission in absentia.

Recently Pastor David Hanson, asso-

ciate pastor at Roseville, commented

“Engaging in global mission is founda-

tional to who we are as a congregation.”

Indeed, Roseville Lutheran Church has

had a very long and rich tradition in sup-

porting global ministries.

The ELCA’s live records go back to June

of 1996, when Roseville generously sup-

ported Tom and Sharyn Christensen, mis-

sionaries to Cameroon, until their return

in 2004. At that time, the congregation

began to sponsor Tim and Ann Reynolds,

also missionaries to Cameroon, until

2008.

Since that time, the congregation has

been supporting Dana Nelson and Thom-

as Ososki, missionaries to Peru, together

with Mark and Marcia Holman, mission-

aries to Palestine.

Alongside generous missionary spon-

sorships ranging between $20,000 to

$40,000 annually, Roseville Lutheran

has also generously supported Stand

with Africa, Young Adults in Global Mis-

sion, Lutheran Schools in the Holy Land,

Domestic and International Disaster

Response, and medical ministries in Tan-

zania.

Roseville’s generous gifts to mission-

ary sponsorship and global mission have,

since 1994, exceeded $430,000.

We are deeply grateful for this congre-

gation’s global vision and generous spir-

it. This evening, I invite you to join me in

thanking God for their ministry.

ONLINE LEARNING @ RLC

Learning online via a webcast can be great, especially if you share the class with a group of fun people who are interested in learning more about the Christian faith with you. RLC class-rooms are now equipped for sharing online webcasts for larger groups. Last year we offered three webcasts through Luther Seminary and had a dozen hun-gry learners show up on Monday eve-nings to listen, discuss and learn more about the Bible and our faith. We hope you’ll plan on coming too. If you can’t join us this fall, please mark your calen-dars and plan for a future opportunity.

the gospel of Matthewled by kyle fever, adjunct instructor of new testament, luther seminary

Monday evenings, september 13, 20,

27- october 4 & 11; roseville lutheran

church – north & south lounge

The Gospel according to Matthew has for a long time been called “the church’s gospel,” as in Matthew we find that the formation of the community of disciples is one of the main themes. Yet, Matthew’s gospel is also complex and Christological and ethical themes, the story of Israel, and conflict with the political powers of the day all weave together with Matthew’s emphasis on discipleship, creating a very rich fabric. We will explore the colors and contours of the fabric of Matthew’s narrative, to open up fresh ways in which Mat-thew’s gospel can shape and instruct the church today.

the new (and old) religions around usled by professor Mark granquist, associate professor of church history

Monday evenings, february 7, 14,

21 & 28 - March 7; roseville lutheran

church – north & south lounge

America has always been the home of many different faith traditions, and by now there is a bewildering array of religions (new and old) about us. Some are world religions that have come to our shores (Judaism, Hinduism, Bud-dhism and Islam). Others are religions invented in America (Mormons, Jeho-vah’s Witnesses, Scientology, and the like). We will try to understand these varied religious groups, and under-stand a Christian reaction to them.

paul: pastor-at-largeled by professor sarah henrich, professor of new testament

Monday evenings, March 28 – april 4,

11, 18 & 25; roseville lutheran church

– north & south lounge

Join us as we get to know Paul the pastor-at-large to the Mediterranean world. Paul’s letters are the earliest documents we have about how faith in Jesus renews and changes the lives of real people. Before the gospels were written down, Paul was speaking, teaching, preaching, and thinking hard about the intersections of the truth of Jesus resurrection, God’s faithfulness, and how people live. What were Paul’s core convictions? What beliefs kept him on the move? Why did he create such strong reactions among those around him? In this class we’ll learn some methods for reading Paul’s let-ters and then we’ll dig in to Philemon, 1st Thessalonians, Philippians, and Galatians to see different faces of Paul in his passion for mission.

ALPHA COURSES

sep t. 14 – nov. 166:0 0 – 9:0 0 p.M.soc ial hall , rose v i l le luther an church

Each of us has our own Alpha Course faith story. Whether it was a journey that you initially started alone, with a family member, or a friend. Whichever way you came by Alpha, I would imagine that it made some sort of impact on

your life.I have been blessed with

dear and powerful Christian role models all my life. And, as a member of this congrega-tion since the age of ten, there has never been a doubt in my mind about who I believed in, who was the reason for living, or who I loved and placed my trust in…my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

So, how was it that I could never seem to answer some of

life’s toughest questions about the world around me; ques-tions posed by those whom I knew so well; questions that should have logical and rea-sonable answers?

The Alpha Group experi-ence helped me to challenge, yet affirm all that I had been taught. I was in a non-threat-ening environment with oth-ers who shared a passion for knowledge about beliefs and about Christianity.

It is for this reason we are “commissioned” into a rela-tionship with others through Christ. It is for this reason that he sends us out into the world to share the Good News. It is in this way that we learn to interact with others: thought-fully, respectfully, purposefully and non-threatening, for we are each made individually, in God’s own image.

HOW CAN I GET INvOLvED WITH ALPHA COURSES?

The 2010 Alpha Invitation has been launched and we would love you to play your part in Alpha at our church.

Here’s how to get involved...

1. Invite friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to come along to the next Alpha course which starts on Sep-tember 14 at 6:00 p.m., or bring your own neighbor-

hood study group to the Alpha course, as Lynda’s study group chose to do...

2. Join us in praying for Alpha! Look on the web-site alphausa.org for prayer opportunities.

3. Bring guests along to our exciting Alpha introductory “Come and See” event on Sep-tember 14 to experience the Alpha Course.

4. Promote Alpha as much as you can! Collect available

promotional literature and distribute them to friends, family, and colleagues.

lynda nelson, rlc MeMber, shares how

god changed her life during her alpha experience!

“i always was a believer but i never had that deep-seeded, joy within me. that was until my neighborhood bible

study group picked the alpha study. the part of my faith i felt i was missing was understanding and knowing the

holy Spirit though I didn’t realize that then. I KnOW that weekend when we learned more about the holy Spirit,

the holy Spirit entered me and filled my soul!! It was like taking a big breathe that inflated that part of me that had

been missing. it was an exhilaration beyond anything i felt before! i felt it then and it has continued to grow. My

faith is more comfortable to me now and i feel i can share it better with others. though not eve-ryone had that

same reaction, each of us has found special meaning in one or more of our stud-ies. the alpha study is excellent

and reveals a lot of not only information, but gives you a chance to get closer to your faith and god. i hope you

enjoy nicky Gumble’s insightful messages each week. May God be with you!”

RLC TEACHES AND BUILDS IN SLOvAKIA

Several RLC members have travelled to Slovakia this sum-mer to help the Center for

Christian Education (CCE) in Martin fulfill its vision for expanding the Lutheran faith in that Central European coun-try. For two weeks in late June and early July, Kären and Dave Dudley teamed with twelve other volunteers from across the USA to help 65 university students practice their conver-sational English. Then in late July and early August, KJ Olson and Vicky Lorenz were part of a Builders Group of twelve volunteers from six congrega-

tions. This team refurbished classrooms for the CCE’s rapid-ly growing elementary school.

It was exciting for all of them to renew acquaintances in Martin with Eva Janotova, the student from Slovakia who spent last summer working with RLC’s youth as an intern. She has now graduated from Zilina University (in conjunc-tion with the CCE Bible School) with a Bachelor’s degree. She is hoping to continue her edu-cation leading to a career in Christian youth leadership. Eva is a fine example of the type of student coming out of the CCE program at the Martin Bible School.

RLC is currently sponsor-

ing three students at the Mar-tin Bible School: Magdalena Babuliakova, Adela Spirkova, and Marek Stanga. All three attended the Conversational English courses taught by the teacher team of which the Dudleys were a part. This financial support from the RLC enables these people to study the Bible and work toward a college degree. They are very grateful for these “first fruits gifts” from all RLC members.

Another component of the CCE is their highly respected Lutheran elementary school in Martin. RLC also sponsors several elementary students at this school. Every year the school adds another grade and

two new classrooms, but this creates a serious space crunch. For the 2010-2011 school year, grade 7 is being added. The CCE has recently signed a long-term lease with the city of Martin to renovate and use some space in a building adja-cent to the existing elementary school campus. The Builders Group including KJ Olson and Vicky Lorenz worked very hard to renovate the interior of this building in time for stu-dent occupancy when classes resume at the elementary school in September.

Roseville Lutheran has a long history of supporting this exciting Lutheran ministry in Slovakia. Many RLC volun-

teers have gone to Martin over the past decade to teach Eng-lish, help with Vacation Bible School, work on construction projects, and support the CCE in other ways. Many opportu-nities continually arise for RLC members to serve this vital outreach ministry. Watch for announcements in upcoming issues of this newsletter. Then prayerfully consider your own gifts of the Spirit and how you could apply them by par-ticipating personally in Vision Slovakia.

WE ARE A SERvING CONGREGATION

sep teMber Miss ion & outre ach opportunit i es

As the school year begins, it is a time for members and friends of RLC to look at our faith and our personal involve-ment at church and in our community. My hope is that RLC becomes a serving con-gregation, in which every member is involved in an out-reach program. Mission and Outreach will continue to pro-mote current and upcoming opportunities on the bulletin

board, the weekly Update in the worship folders, and the monthly newsletters.

Roseville Lutheran will continue to support Bridg-ing in Roseville with monthly donations. (Bridging provides household items for people in crisis situations.) The response this past year has been tremendous, but there is an increasing need for furni-ture and household goods.

Please look for the donation bins in Luther Commons for collecting the following items each month:

Please continue to bring food for the foodshelf on an ongoing basis. Place food in the food bin in Luther Commons. As families struggle in this econ-omy, the requests for food and assistance have increased at RLC and at Keystone Commu-nity Food Shelf. SPONSORSHIP CAMPAIGN 2010

Roseville Lutheran has had a strong relationship with Tan-zania, Slovakia, Operation Bootstrap Africa and our Local RLC Nursery School. The Mission and Outreach Ministry Team’s goal is to increase the financial donations from RLC to these groups. We are encouraging member(s) to support a student for a year, whether it is multiple families or individuals joining together.

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP

As fall draws near it brings back the memories of start-ing a new school year. While our children receive free pub-lic school education until 12th grade, that is not true in Tanza-nia. Tanzania students have to pay for their secondary educa-tion. In Slovakia, the financial support from the government does not cover all the needs for their students’ education. If you sponsored a student last year, please prayerfully con-sider sponsoring them again this school year.

The Mission and Outreach Team designates $3,000 each year for secondary student sponsorships to our sister congregation in Tanzania. Our donation enables around 8 students to attend second-ary school in Tanzania. While this is a tremendous gift, it is only a starting point with the need for educational sup-port in Tanzania. Through the Sponsorship Campaign last year, RLC increased our sup-port for secondary students to

29 full sponsorships. Our goal is to continue sponsoring 29 students from our sister con-gregation by receiving your donations before November 1, 2010. So if you have con-sidered giving a full or partial sponsorship, please call David Dudley at 651-489-7243.

RLC’s continues its support at the Bible School in Martin, Slovakia. The $1,500 each year from Mission and Outreach has allowed RLC to sponsor three students in the bachelor degree program and two stu-dents in the elementary school. Iveta Harvanova, Maria Hoda-sova, and Zuzana Durcova are our sponsored students at the Bible School. Our students at the elementary school are Alzbeta Kutlikova and Matej Lavcek. If you have questions, please contact Mary Schultz at 651-644-1534 or Denny Olan-der at 651-644-5175.

The MaaSae Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS) in northern Tanzania is now ten years old! There are many amazing stories of the Maasai girls who attend this unique

school. Operation Bootstrap Africa continues providing educational scholarships for these disadvantaged students. Each year, RLC gives $ 2,000 to Operation Bootstrap Africa to support their programs and school. A full year sponsor-ship for a secondary student is $700. Many RLC members have sponsored students in the past and provided hope to these young women. If you have any questions, please contact Diane Jacoby at 651-490-1213.

The RLC nursery schools helps prepare local students for kindergarten and grade school. Due to the economic strains, many families need assistance for their child. Please consider donating to help these pre-K students in our community.

While the Mission and Out-reach Ministry Team continues sponsoring students, there are always more students to help in these communities. Please consider supporting a stu-dent through your prayers and financial gift.

CELEBRATE RECOvERy WEEKEND AT RLC

saturday, noveMber 20 & sunday, noveMber 21

Faith Partners will host Recovery Weekend at RLC the weekend of November 20-21, 2010. At Saturday worship the RLC clergy will share a message of hope in regard to

addiction and recovery. On Sunday the Union Gospel Mis-sion Changed Lives Choir at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship will provide inspirational music. The stories they share will be testament of God’s love and power in healing those whose lives are affected by of addic-tion. Members of both Faith

Partners and the choir will be available after worship in Luther Commons.

Addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. Its effects are devastating for the addict, as well as their friends and loved ones… it is a fam-ily disease… it affects all -- any race, any socioeconomic

group, any religion, any age… No one is immune.

Faith Partners is committed to offering education, referrals, and support to those affected by addiction. This ministry began in 2006 and finds that the need for its services con-tinues to grow. If you would like to become involved, you

may contact the church office or come to one of their month-ly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of each month at RLC.

3RD GRADERS RECEIvE BIBLES

A special day has been set aside for all third graders at Roseville Lutheran Church - a day where each one receives their own Bible from their faith community. These Bibles will be presented during the 9:00 a.m. worship service on September 26. Third graders should attend the 9:00 a.m. worship service with their fam-ily as they and their parents will be asked to come forward for the Bible presentation.

Also, on September 27 and October 4, we will offer a two-part workshop for third grad-ers, who just received their

Bibles, and their parents. We want to share in the prom-ise that you, as parents, made at your child’s Baptism, to . . . “place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their instruction in the Chris-tian faith.” Through this work-shop we will introduce the stu-dents and parents to their new

Bible and share with them the importance of making the study of God’s Word a part of daily life. We will provide

ideas thas can be used at home to explore and nurture their faith. This workshop will also provide the chance to connect with other 3rd grade families.

The September 27 work-shop will meet from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. The October 4 work-shop will begin with dinner for the whole family at 6:15 p.m,

to be followed by the work-shop beginning at 7:00 p.m. Childcare will be available for the workshop time on October 4. Please contact the Church Office at 651-487-7752 by Sunday, October 3 to RSVP for the dinner and/or childcare on October 4.

SHARE yOUR fAITH...HIGHLIGHT A BIBLE

The New Adventure Bibles, which will be presented to the 3rd graders on September 26, will available on tables in the Lobby beginning the weekend

of September 11/12. Each per-son of RLC plays role in raising the next generation of faithful Christians. How meaningful it would be for the 3rd graders to receive a Bible which has favorite passages highlighted for them by various members of the congregation.

Everyone is invited to stop by the tables before Septem-ber 24, to highlight a favorite passage or two in the Bibles that will be given to the 3rd graders. Highlighters will be provided.
