Additional Leadership Staff Required to Keep Up With Center’s GrowthIn 2008, the year that the Dempsey Center opened its doors, the Center provided 6,000 direct service contacts to cancer patients and their families, supported by a staff of three full-time employees and 32 volunteers. In 2009, the numbers grew exponentially, with the Center providing cancer health education and support through our website, workshops, health fairs, and community events to tens of thousands of people. We also had 8,000 direct patient and caregiver contacts through our direct care services, including counseling/oncology social work, financial resource counseling, helpline calls, integrative medi-cine services such as massage therapy and reiki, and other direct care. We nearly doubled the number of free workshops offered through the Center, and increased our pool of volunteers to 173, and our staff from 3 to 7 regular full- and part-time employees. The inaugural Dempsey Challenge event increased our visibility and reach, resulting in growing numbers of patients and their loved ones utilizing the Center for support and care, along with increased involvement from caring and generous community members who joined the Center’s volunteer and donor pools.

“We have reached a point where the administrative work involved in leading the Center requires two positions---a Program Director, who can focus on developing, directing, and maintaining the quality of the services and programs offered by the Center, and an Executive Director, who can focus on providing administrative oversight, in terms of fiscal management; en-hancing organizational operations; and developing and maintaining external communications and partnerships,” notes Kerry Irish, the Center’s Program Director and co-founder. “We are thrilled to bring someone of Teresa’s caliber to our team!”

In addition to leadership roles in a number of Maine organi-

zations, Teresa comes to us with a clinician’s heart and ex-

perience. She received a Master of Arts from the Franciscan

School of Theology in Berkeley, CA. and her Post-Masters

certificate in Spiritual Direction from The Mercy Center for

Healing the Whole Person located in Colorado Springs. She

is a spiritual director, lay theologian, retreat facilitator, lec-

turer and author. She has also served as a hospital chaplain,

providing spiritual and pastoral care to patients and fami-

lies at end-of-life.

Teresa firmly believes in the Center’s

mission to embrace the whole person

– in mind, body and spirit – in a respect-

ful, inclusive and healing environment.

“I continue to be impressed with the

dedication and commitment of Cen-

ter staff and volunteers. I have been

inspired and humbled by the cour-

age displayed by individuals living

with and affected by cancer.”

Dempsey Center Welcomes Executive Director

We are pleased to announce that Teresa Schulz will be joining The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in the newly created role of Executive Director. Teresa has extensive experience in management and leadership roles, most recently as a member of the Human Resource team at Central Maine Medical Center. Teresa has also served as the “Tools

for Intentional Living & Transformation” series facilitator at the Dempsey Center.

The Dempsey Center is pleased to offer three new ongoing monthly offerings!

The Lung Cancer Wellness and Support Group

This group offers an opportunity for lung cancer patients, survivors, and family caregivers/loved ones to receive support while

learning about resources and new information regarding lung cancer. Beginning July 15, the group will meet every third Thursday of the

month from 1:30p to 3:00pm in Conference Room D.

TILT GroupTools for Intentional Living and Transformation (TILT) helped

reveal the sacredness of life - in wellness and illness. In our initial six week sessions, we began to explore ways to act - not react - out of

that sacredness. For those who have completed the initial TILT sessions and wish to continue honing those intentional living

tools, we are offering monthly gatherings the first Tuesday of every month from 4:30-6:00 p.m in the Conference Classroom at

CMMC. Space is limited to 12 participants and preregistration to join this group is required.

Monthly Touch Drawing* CircleLed by Helen Warren, an artist, art educator and healer.

Meets the first Wednesday of the month (beginning Aug. 4th) 4:30 -6:30 pm in the Conference Classroom at CMMC (1st floor, across

from the Boardroom). This circle provides a unique opportunity for relaxation, reflection, expression and rejuvenation. The playful

yet profound process of Touch Drawing* involves drawing with your fingers and hands, allowing impulses to well up from within and take

form on the paper. This creative practice encourages you to open to and let nourishing energy flow freely, to trust your body’s wisdom and intuition, and to access deep sources for healing and inspiration.

The circle gathered and Helen’s gentle guidance provides a safe and relaxing space in which to journey. No experience

necessary, only a willingness to open to the magic!!

SPECIAL EVENTS & WORKSHOPS

A LUNCH-AND-LEARN SERIES FOR CANCER CAREGIVERS

Date/Time: 1st Monday of the month, 12:00-1:30 p.m.Location: Conference Room D at CMMC

A caregiver can be anyone who is involved with the emotional and/or physical care of a loved one who has cancer. As a caregiver, it is essential that you care for your self as you care for your loved one. These sessions are designed to provide you with tools to do this, while offering the opportunity to connect with other caregivers.

The series is facilitated by Emily Ecker, LCSW, Outreach Oncology Social Worker for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. Lunch will be provided and pre-registration required. Space is limited to 8 partici-pants, and early registration is strongly encouraged.

7/5/10: The Language of Comforting: What to Say and Do for People in Distress Guest presenter: Val Walker. Listening with warmth and acceptance is one of the greatest gifts we can give someone. We will explore what it means to be a comforting presence, and learn what to say and do for people in distress. We will especially focus on how to use the best words for offering comfort, and what we need to avoid saying.

Val Walker has had many years of experience as a grief and loss counselor and is the author of The Art of Comforting: What to Say and Do for People in Distress, being published by Tarcher/Penguin (Fall 2010).

8/2/10: Laughter is Good “Medicine”Guest Presenter: Carol Emery, Certified Laughter Leader. Do you need a reason to laugh? Here are a few: Laughter can lower your blood pressure, reduce your stress, connect you with others, lift your mood, and its cost-free! Carol works with River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition and is a Certified Laughter Leader, trained by the World Laughter Tour.

9/13/10: Caring for My Mom Guest presenter: Mary Dempsey, Volunteer Corps Manager at the Dempsey Center. Eleven years ago, Mary’s mother was first diagnosed with cancer. Adult children who become caregivers have a unique experience, role and perspective that differs from other types of caregivers. She’ll share these and tips that she’s learned along the way.

PAINTING WITH PASTELS

Date/Time: 7/19/10 & 7/26/10, Mondays, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Location: Conference Room H at CMMC

Co-led by Selia Dubois, artist and cancer survivor, and Patricia Poulin, RN, artist. Art is considered a form of yoga, during which the participant may experience feelings of inner peace and tranquility. We all have a need to express ourselves and have an inner talent that needs to be discovered. By the end of the second session, we will have a beautiful work of art that we can be proud of. No previous art experience necessary! Session is limited to 15 participants and early registration is encouraged.

TWEENS TO TEENS

Date/Time: 7/6/10 - 8/10/10, Tuesdays, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Location: The Patrick Dempsey Center

Facilitated by Tookie Bright, LMSW – CC, Children’s Program Coordinator. Teenagers have their own unique set of needs when someone they love has been diagnosed with cancer. This 6 week support group offers a comfortable environment to talk about what it’s like, learn more about cancer, and engage in different projects with other teenagers facing similar struggles.

“Tweens to Teens” is for adolescents ages 12-17. Due to the progressive and cohesive nature of this group we request that participants make every effort to attend all sessions if at all possible. The group is free and pre-registration is required. Please contact Tookie Bright at 795-8256 for more information.

All programs are FREE and are open to cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. Pre-registration is required for all programs in order to ensure adequate space & refreshments: call 795-8250 or 1-877-336-7287 to register.

Program Cancellations due to weather will be posted on our website: www.dempseycenter.org.

SEEKING BALANCE

Date/Time: 7/14/10, 1:30-3:00 p.m. Location: Conference Room I at CMMC

Presented by Rev. Don Mayberry. Cancer is an unwelcome intrusion into our lives that can knock us off our balance in more ways than one. There are many ways to maintain our balance, including the encouragement of friend-ships, telling our stories, listening to the stories of others, and engaging our spirits through prayer, meditation, or other practices. This session will involve open conversa-tion about the various ways that we strive to stand up to this particular chapter of our lives. We want to more than cope...we want to live meaningful and hopeful lives even when the darkness is trying to knock us off our feet.

Quilts for CLIMBNew Dempsey Center volunteer Dee Roberge donated various quilts for young graduates of the Center’s CLIMB (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery) program. CLIMB is a six-week program designed by the Children’s Treehouse Foundation for children ages 5-11 with a parent or grandparent diagnosed with cancer. The new program will be offered quarterly through the Center and Roberge has offered to provide support and instruction to members of the Center’s sewing group who are willing to assist in creating the quilts.

Martel Elementary ‘Steps’ for the Dempsey CenterAs part of the 2009 International CyberFair Project theme “Unite and Share,” Darlene Letourneau’s third grade class at Martel Elementa-ry School decided to recognize individuals and organizations that devote time and money to improving the lives of people of Lewiston. The class challenged all Martel students to walk 10,000 steps per week and collect donations in memory of Martel staff members who have succumbed to cancer. Through the event, the Martel community raised $872.45 for the Dempsey Center and honored the memories of Ms. Liza Beckwith, Ms. Judith Fairweather, Mrs. Sonya Charest, Mrs. Denise Dube, Mrs. Francoise Campbell, and Mr. Kenneth Jones.

Community of Poland donates in memory of Betty BrewsterWhether he was cramming for mid-terms, shoot-ing jump shots or swinging for the fences, Betty Brewster was there for her son, Matt, a 17-year-old student at Poland High School. After years of being cancer-free, Betty succumbed to her second bout with lung cancer in February. “She was always there for me whenever I needed her,” said Matt, her only child. “She was amazing.” After serving as the primary caregiver for her sister, who also had cancer, Betty began her personal battle in 2001. The upper lobe of her right lung was removed and she faced the disease head-on, staying active and doing her best to wear out the school’s track.

The cancer returned in the fall of 2009 and Betty remained determined, promising herself and her family that she would not give up the fight. She kept Matt focused on his schoolwork and cheered as if all mem-bers of the Knights baseball and basketball teams were her own. “She loved being around family and friends and watching games. She would help anyone in any way she could,” said Matt. The community of Poland rallied to make a contribu-tion in Betty’s memory. Proceeds from the school’s Wall of Hope, filled with cards purchased for a dollar, and a Knights basketball game totaled $515. Matt presented the check to Operation Inspiration, a program within The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center that provides support, education and wellness services at no cost to lung can-cer patients, survivors and caregivers. “My mom would want me to do something good for people,” said Matt.

“I know what it’s like for someone to have cancer.”

PROFILES OF COURAGE, CARING, AND COMMITMENT

To this day, though Rhonda has incurable ovarian cancer, she is determined to “continue living and not waste time dying.” Talking with Rhonda is like listening to a bird sing its beautiful song on the first day of spring. Her voice and words take hold and wrap you in a warm embrace. You can’t help but catch her enthusiasm for life.

Though her spirit is strong, she admits that there have been difficult times since she was diagnosed with cancer. She grieves for her husband of 38 years, John and their two children, Jarrett and Travis. She says “[I} have to be diligent or grief will sneak up behind me and try to suck me back into the darkness.”

She has been surrounded by the love of her im-mediate and her extended family. “I don’t know what I would have done without my cancer support group on Wednesday afternoons,” she says, “after all, they are the ones who have traveled the same journey. I have ac-cessed ways to tap into relaxation therapy, spirituality and nature. There are numerous books and online sites for women who are reaching out for help. The Dempsey Center has been an invaluable wealth of caring, informa-tion and services.”

Rhonda says that her cancer has given her many un-expected gifts and blessings. She has connected with amazing caregivers and fellow patients. One fellow patient, Diane, inspired Rhonda to write a poem called “Earth Angel.” According to Rhonda, Diane filled an empty spot in her life. “Our time together was too short,” says Rhonda, “but I treasure every minute of it. I would have never met her if not for cancer.” She says that cancer has also given her a sense of “freedom.”

During the past four years, “I have allowed myself to do and try things differently,” explains Poisson, “I bought a kayak and have seen several breathtaking lakes and ocean coves. I’ve snow shoed and taken fun workshop courses.”

While cancer has caused her to change her life, she has tried to accept the changes and put

them in a positive light. “For example,” says Rhonda, “instead of traveling to far away destinations that take a lot of activity and energy, I have planned trips and outings closer to home.” She has also made a point of telling the people in her life that she loves

them. “If I need to right a wrong, I do, and I’ve let myself forgive those who may have hurt

me. The hardest challenge,” says Rhonda “is to forgive yourself, but it is important.”

For anyone who has been recently diagnosed with cancer, Rhonda offers the following advice: Try to keep your life as normal as possible, but let it be okay to bring in your world a bit to accommodate what you’re going through at the moment. Treasure the little things you may have overlooked before. And most importantly, reach out to family, friends and local support groups. You may not realize it, but they need you to ask them for help just as much as you do.

Rhonda describes herself as being drawn to other people who have cancer, like it is her mission to reach out to them and help them in whatever way that she can. I think that anyone who speaks with Rhonda will be easily drawn to her and captivated by her spirit and enthusi-asm for life. She is truly an amazing, loving and coura-geous person. Words alone cannot adequately describe Rhonda Poisson.

If you’ve ever thought about getting in your car and driving the Old Route 66 from Chicago to California, Rhonda Poisson would tell you to “go for it.” In 1999, Rhonda, someone who has in her

words, “always lived life to the fullest,” drove from Chicago to the California Santa Monica Pier with her husband in a 1966 Chevelle Malibu. They got on the internet and planned a trip

that had them off the freeways and staying in “mom and pop hotels.”
