Message from the Principal Parent-Student Presentations: Understanding Standardized Testing And

“What You Really Need to Know to Be Successful In College”

During the 2009-2010 school year, I had the opportunity to make two presentations at PTA

meetings: standardized testing (including an article in the Parent Newsletter – February, 2009),

and what it takes to be successful at college. The short presentation time certainly did not al-

low us room to go into much detail, provide examples, or to answer many questions. As a re-

sult of the feedback from the parents who were in attendance, we have decided to have two

evening parent-student presentations on both topics.

The date for the presentation on standardized testing will be on Wednesday, November 10,

2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the band room. In this meeting you will learn the differences between

the various types of testing (aptitude, achievement, norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, for-

mative, and summative), as well as understanding what the ACT, SAT, and IQ test scores actu-

ally measure. Information will also be presented on how colleges and universities use these

numbers to determine admission and eligibility for scholarships. We will conclude this presen-

tation on how to prepare for such examinations and how to reduce test anxiety. If time permits,

we will split away from the topic and talk about what parents and students need to know when

looking at a college or university to attend – a new paradigm of sorts may be in what the col-

lege or university can do for you after you graduate rather than what they can offer you while

you are there.

The second presentation on ―What You Really Need to Know and Do in Order to Be Success-

ful in College‖ will occur on Tuesday, February 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the band room.

One of the great myths regarding college success lies in the thinking that students who have

acquired high grades and test scores in high school have a much greater chance of being suc-

cessful in college – nothing can be further from the truth. The bottom line is ―success in col-

lege‖ is due more to one’s internal motivation and drive than anything else. More importantly,

students who have a desire to achieve and who are not afraid of failure are more apt to deal

with adversity and failure than those students who found high school easy and thus perceive

themselves as being invincible. The other topics we will present: time management, scheduling, social interaction, campus in-

volvement, money management, and self-discipline will only go to enhance a student’s opportunity for success.

If you are interested in attending one or both presentations, please call Ms. Loretta Preno, my administrative assistant at 913-993

-6600 and let us know you will be attending. This will help us out in the preparation of materials and handouts. We would en-

courage you to bring along your student(s), so they are informed on what they can do to effectively deal with both issues as they

prepare for their collegiate career.

Superintendent to Present Boundary & Facility Proposals on September 13

In the fall of 2009, as part of the Shawnee Mission School District’s five-year strategic planning process, the Shawnee Mission Board of Edu-

cation directed Superintendent Gene Johnson to identify areas of educational and operational inefficiency within the school district. Dr. John-

son formed an internal committee to identify the areas of inefficiency. Last April, the committee provided Dr. Johnson with a draft report.

Throughout the summer, Dr. Johnson and his staff have been reviewing information from the report along with other available district data

and are in the process of developing proposals to address educational and operational inefficiencies within the district.

On September 13, Dr. Johnson will present these proposals to the board of education. The information, which will include proposals for

boundary changes and school closures, will be presented during the regular board meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held

in the cafeteria at Shawnee Mission West High school and is open to the public. The board will hear the proposals, but will take no action on

September 13.

The district will hold a series of community meetings between September 13 and the end of October to allow patrons to react to the proposals

and gain clarification regarding proposed changes. Board of education members will attend the meetings to hear reactions and feedback from

those in attendance. The schedule of the community meetings will be announced to the public at the September 13 meeting. The superinten-

dent’s presentation and community meeting schedule will be available to the public via the district’s website on September 14.

Following the community meetings, the superintendent will provide the board of education with formal administrative recommendations. The

board will consider the recommendations for action at the November 8 board of education meeting, which is scheduled at 7 p.m., in the

members related to technology in our district. This information must be included in our district’s technology plan submission to

KSDE this fall.

Beginning August 30, there will be a ―new story‖ on the district website and a posting on the district’s Facebook page to allow

for public feedback. Input will be collected through both of these venues through September 7. Please visit either site to share

feedback about technology in Shawnee Mission.

Fall lobster sale will be Saturday October 9, with orders due by Monday October 4; parents will receive

an order form or check the SME website. Information Night for student exchange programs and hosting

will be Tuesday September 21 in the SME Library.

35mm SLR Cameras Needed

As we get more into the digital image age, students taking Photography at school are not likely to have access at

home to a 35mm SLR manual camera. While the art department does have a number of cameras that students can

check out, we still need more. If you have a working 35mm SLR camera at home that you no longer want, you

might consider donating it to the SME photo department. We would be most appreciative and grateful. Please

contact Adam Finkelston or Shelly Trewolla.

Friends of the Library Used Book Sale

October 23 is the date for this year’s Friends of the Library Used Book Sale which will be held in conjunction with the SHARE

Garage Sale. We welcome donations of new or gently used books of any kind, CDs, audio books, cassettes, and DVDs. You

may drop off your items at the library on weekdays, any time from 7:00-3:30. Call 913-993-6617 if you have questions.

Plan now to attend this special event! There will be bargains galore with most books priced at .50 or $1.00! Join with us to raise

money for new technology for our Library Media Center. We appreciate your support!

FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………

Did you know why we keep flavored milk in schools? Studies revealed that eliminating chocolate and other flavored milks

from school cafeteria menus resulted in a dramatic drop in milk consumption along with a substantial reduction in nu-

trient intakes of students--which are not easy or affordable to replace. When flavored milk was not available, many chil-

dren chose not to drink milk and missed out on the essential nutrients that milk provides. On days when only white milk was

offered in cafeterias, milk consumption dropped an average of 35 percent.

To replace the nutrients lost from the decline in milk consumption:

Required three to four different food items to match milk's nutrient contribution

Added back more calories and fat than were being reduced

Added back roughly half the sugar, netting a savings of only 15-28 grams/week

Required an incremental $2,200 to $4,600 more annually per 100 students

We have worked with our dairy to have flavored milks reformulated. They now contain no high fructose corn syrup and con-

form with the Alliance for Healthier Generation beverage guidelines. Our flavored milks only have 130 kcal and 22g of sugar

per 8 oz. serving. White milk naturally has 12g of sugar per serving.

The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at

http://www.smsd.org/parents/foodservices.htm.

They may not know it, but teenagers and young adults are at greater risk for getting meningococcal disease (meningitis) and are

more likely to die compared to younger age groups. In fact, about 10% of the 1000 to2600 Americans who get meningococcal

meningitis each year will die. Death rates are up to 5 times higher among teenagers and young adults (15 through 24 years of

age) compared to other age groups.

Certain lifestyle factors are thought to put healthy preteens and teens at greater risk for meningitis infection, including:

Sharing drinking glasses, eating utensils, or water bottles

Being in crowded situations for prolonged periods of time

Kissing

Not getting enough sleep

Smoking (or being exposed to smoke)

Getting your children vaccinated is the best way to help protect them from meningococcal meningitis. The Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC) and other leading medical groups recommend meningococcal vaccines for:

2010 PSAT/NMSQT Wednesday, October 13, 2010 What is it…should I sign my student up?

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College

Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the

SAT®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.

Primarily administered to juniors.

The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT

Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your prepara-

tion on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.

See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.

Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).

Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions on the SAT.

How do I sign up? Registration forms are in the counseling office.

Cost: $16.00 for the Wednesday test (administered at SME 7:40 a.m.)

$18.00 for the Saturday test (administered at Broadmoor Technical Center)

Deadline to register is Friday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m.

Prepare Now for Winter Sports

Now is the time to begin planning for the winter athletic season. Please keep the following in mind as you begin prepa-

rations.

Before an athlete can try out or practice, we must have a physical examination on file. If you have already turned in a

physical exam for fall sports, you have already met this requirement.

The exam must have taken place after May 1, 2010 and must be signed by both a physician and the athlete’s parents.

Specific forms (available at SME office or may be downloaded at www.smesports.org) must be used. This is a

KSHSAA requirement.

On a special note, please turn in your physicals to the AD Secretary at any time. It is a good idea to make a copy of the

physical before you turn it in.

Activity Tickets

Athletic activities are financed from athletic gate receipts, activity tickets, and the general operating budget allocated by

the board. All students who participate in interscholastic athletics shall purchase an activity ticket. This is a district pol-

icy. If your student participates in a fall, winter, or spring sport, they are required to have an activity ticket. If your stu-

dent is an athlete and has not purchased an activity ticket, please send them to the bookkeeper to pay for this. The cost is

$35.00 and is good for the 2010-2011 school year. Students with an activity ticket may attend home sporting events at

no charge.

Shawnee Mission East "Little Lancer" Cheer Clinic

The Shawnee Mission East "Little Lancer" Cheer Clinic will be held on Saturday, September 11,

Third, please consider joining choirboosters! Joining communicates to your student that their interests are your interests.

Just visit the choirboosters website at www.smechoirbooster.com. While you’re there, think about purchasing some spirit

wear — the blankets and pj bottoms would make great holiday gifts!
