The Beginnings of the Celebration
The practice of celebrating Chuseok dates back to the early Silla Dynasty (57 B.C. - A.D. 935).
In the year A.D. 32, King Yuri of Silla ordered women from six local towns in Gyeongju, the
capital of the ancient dynasty, to be divided into two teams and to engage in a weaving competitionover the period of one year from July 15 until August 14 the next year.
The team that had woven the most cloth by the date we now know as Chuseok was declared the
winner.
The losing team would then prepare a large celebration - filled with dancing, eating and singing -
for the victors.

The Chusok Holiday: a Day of Thanksgiving and Family Reunion
Ancestral Worship
During the holiday, there will be a mass exodus from cities as millions of Koreans re-turn to their ancestral hometowns to reunite with their families and to pay homage to theirforebears.
People visit the tombs of their ancestors on Chuseok.On Chuseok day, people performancestral worship rituals early in the morning.
The traditional ceremonies of beolcho, charye, and seongmyo are faithfully practiced

One of my favorite miracle stories is the Healing of the Paralytic Man.Many times Ive compared myself with the man in the story. I have never
been a paralytic, I mean, physically. But looking deeper into myself I realizethat Ive been, in many and a lot ways, been a paralytic.
GUILT. For about five years Ive been living in guilt for a lot of things Icould NOT have done but I did. Two of the pressing sources of my guilt aremy absence in my family while my kids are growing up and my unsuccessfulmarriage. Never in my wild dreams that these will happen because I havealways hoped, wished, and prayed for the best. The very source of mystrength became the most unstable of all. Through Gods grace I realizedthat I MUST not be too hard on myself. That I have to forgive myself andpray that I may be able to accept the things I cannot change. Gods forgive-ness, that helped me to forgive myself. What happiness for those whoseguilt has been forgiven! What relief for those who have confessed their sinsand God has cleaned their record. Psalms 32:1
RESENTMENT AND ANGER. The turbulent, difficult, painful, andtraumatic experiences I went through borne in me some resentments andanger. When my kids were very young, we used to pray together before wego to bed. One day, my second daughter who was only 7 years old thenasked me, Mama, lagi po tayong nagpe pray pero bakit di natin pinagpepray si papa? (Mama, we are always praying, but why dont we pray forpapa? I was caught unaware and stunned by that very innocent but strikingquestion from my 7-year old girl. I stopped for a moment, trying to find foran answer. My answer was, kasi anak hindi pa handa si mama. (Babybecause Mama isnt ready yet). That served as a challenge for me. Thequestion kept coming back, the Lord spoke through my daughter. Until oneday, I found myself praying for my husband, offering him in every celebrationof the Mass especially in the consecration. Yes, forgiveness comes from
our compassionate, merciful God and He respects our unpreparedness. But
with His grace, His time comes.
FEAR. Fear of being alone, fear of growing old, fear of losing a job, fear oflosing someone I love, fear of taking risks, fear for my childrens future, fearof making decisions.. endless fears come everyday in my life. Over-coming these fears is such a difficult process. I wish, someday, I can over-come all of these and say, Lord, may your will be done.
MATERIALISM. Ive been working hard all my life. In Elementary, I hadto go to the tobacco farm to earn P5.00 a day, sell papayas after a typhoon,tomatoes, vegetables, etc. just to have extra money. In High School, I hadto help in the school canteen to have Sky Flakes and a bottle of Coke forsnacks. In college, I had to wash hundreds of trays, giant pots and kitchenutensils in the dormitory so I can be spared from paying dormitory fees. Ihad to teach in 3-4 schools with some consultancies just to make both endsmeet. In Korea, I have to work 12 hours a day or more to earn and haveenough, ignoring the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer season.But when is ENOUGH enough? Admittedly, it was for survival at first, butlater it was close to..materialism.
My Compassionate and Merciful God,
I surrender everything that drive my life- my guilt, my fears, my resent-ments and anger, my materialism. Help me trust in you more and keep my
purpose firm. Heal me, touch me the same way you did to the paralyzedman. AMEN!

Feast DaySeptember 14th
On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (or Triumph of the Cross) we honor the Holy Cross
by which Christ redeemed the world. The public veneration of the Cross of Christ originated in the
fourth century, according to early accounts, beginning with the miraculous discovery of the cross
on September 14, 326, by Saint Helen, mother of Constantine, while she was on a pilgrimage to Je-
rusalem -- the same day that two churches built at the site of Calvary by Constantine were dedicated.
The observance of the Feast of the Exaltation (probably from a Greek word meaning "bringing
to light") of the Cross has been celebrated by Christians on September 14 ever since. In the Western
Church, the feast came into prominence in the seventh century, apparently inspired by the recovery
of a portion of the Cross, said to have been taken from Jerusalem the Persians, by the Roman em-
peror Heraclius in 629.
Christians "exalt" the Cross of Christ as the instrument of our salvation. Adoration of the Cross
is, thus, adoration of Jesus Christ, the God Man, who suffered and died on this Roman instrument
of torture for our redemption from sin and death. The cross represents the One Sacrifice by which
Jesus, obedient even unto death, accomplished our salvation. The cross is a symbolic summary of
the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ -- all in one image.
The Cross -- because of what it represents -- is the most potent and universal symbol of the
Christian faith. It has inspired both liturgical and private devotions: for example, the Sign of the
Cross, which is an invocation of the Holy Trinity; the "little" Sign of the Cross on head, lips and
heart at the reading of the Gospel; praying the Stations (or Way) of the Cross; and the Veneration
of the Cross by the faithful on Good Friday by kissing the feet of the image of Our Savior crucified.
Placing a crucifix (the cross with an image of Christ's body upon it) in churches and homes, in
classrooms of Catholic schools and in other Catholic institutions, or wearing this image on our per-
sons, is a constant reminder -- and witness -- of Christ's ultimate triumph, His victory over sin and
death through His suffering and dying on the Cross.
We remember Our Lord's words, "He who does not take up his cross and follow me is not wor-
thy of me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake shall find it." (Mt
10:38,39). Meditating on these words we unite ourselves -- our souls and bodies -- with His obedi-
ence and His sacrifice; and we rejoice in this inestimable gift through which we have the hope of
salvation and the glory.
Dying, you destroyed our death; rising you restored our life.
Save us by your cross, Christ our Redeemer.

It was sometime in 1990 that I became quite curious about El Shaddai DWXI-PPFI and its increasing popularity
among the young and the elderly, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. So I made a little study on the origin of the word El
Shaddai. I found out that El is a semitic term for God and Shaddai is traditionally translated as Almighty. El
Shadday is the original Hebrew spelling of El Shaddai. The Latin text uses I for Y.
Shaddai seems to be an abbreviated form of Asher Day, meaning the One Who is Enough. However, there are
other possible word origins. In Arabic, for instance, we have Shadid, meaning strong and Sayyid, meaning Lord.
On the other hand, in Hebrew, we have Shaddah and Shad, which means maternal breast, redolent of the AlkkadianShaddu, the God of Abundance. Besides this, Shadu can also mean mountain, which is a symbol of power and
stability. At the same time, it is reminiscent of the maternal breast because of its form which is mainly a place of refuge,
spiritual retreat and worship, not to mention that it is where one can get food supplies. What is common in all these terms
or possible etymologies are the idea of Lord Who has extraordinary power that always gives protection; the LordWhose infinite goodness shares life and fruitfulness in abundance. Therefore, this infinitely Good and Almighty
Lord, Who guarantees fruitful life and protection, challenges man to believe and trust in Him.
The Covenant between God and Abram and between God and Jacob:
In Genesis 17:2 (Jerusalem Bible Version), God introduced Himself to Abram thus: I am El Shaddai. Bear yourself
blameless in My presence, and I will make a Covenant between Myself and increase your numbers greatly. God also in-troduced Himself to Jacob (Genesis 35:11-13, Jerusalem Bible Version) in the same manner: I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful
and multiply. A nation, indeed a group of nations shall descend from you. Even kings shall be numbered among your de-
scendants. I give you this land, the land I gave to Abraham and to Isaac; and I will give this land to your descendants after
you.
El Shaddai, had promised to both Abram and Jacob countless children. He gave them an assembly of nation for their
posterity as well as vast properties of land, on one important condition: that they walk in His presence and be blameless. It
is worth noting that, on the same occasion, the Lord changed the name of Abram to Abraham and Jacob to Israel. Why?
Because, from that time on, Abram and Jacob became special possessions of El Shaddai. If we are truly followers of El
Shaddai and firmly believe that He became Man and lived among us to die for us in order to give us life, then we shouldall commit ourselves and be faithful to our Covenant with Him, the Powerful and Abundant One, Who has everything for
our life and security. Therefore, in Him we trust, for Him we live, and with Him, we have the power to confront, persuade
and change this materialistic and hedonistic world to the righteous ways and values of El Shaddai.

Its been almost four months since I started here in Muak-dong Mission Church. What
seemed to be a short time for me is in reality long- four months- considering every-thing that Ive experienced here.
Yes I have that ideal of what a missionary here must be, yet the reality confronts meand made me question too why I chose to be here? What can I do here? And the anxi-
ety of my still limited language is with me. The time I moved-in to my new house andhave a close encounter with or rather to live with one Korean woman is the time Ive
been looking forward to, to see our differences, but being confronted with that reality
is a sudden culture shock to me. Yes, honestly I am learning the hard way.
So what this reading or article, Diagram of Christian Life, taught me is a kind ofa step by step guide for my daily life here, the process of inculturation. Experiences asthey say are always the starting point of learning and from there all theories, principles or theology on Mission and Inculturation fol-
low. For me, my missionary journey here in Korea has started to have a deeper meaning.
The Eucharist is always a God experience for me. With my still very limited language, I found myself a great refuge each time I
am celebrating the Eucharist with the community. It takes me beyond the language barrier and each celebration is always a communi-tarian experience for me. A celebration of the common faith we have for each other, who wants or have the desire to live the call of
Jesus: do this, break your body and pour out your life for one another, in memory of me, Love one another the way I haveloved you.
These entail some concrete actions on my part as expressed in my own limited ways of sharing life and love to the community, tothe children of Koreans, in teaching English and at the same time or most of the time a ministry of presence, of just being with them.
These sound so simple yet I, on my part, is experiencing a kind of helplessness that I couldnt share more, cant express more much as
I wanted to and sometimes feel isolated for I cant understand everything. Everyday for me is like breaking of the bread, breaking my
body, letting go of what I know or of something familiar with, leaving my comfort zone and dwelling on the unknown and unseen.To love is to serve which alone is authentic worship.
CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP a call which reminds me once again of why I am here speaks of self-abnegation or taking up ones
cross(Mt.16:>24), is a person dedicated to the reign of God and the poor, such discipline becomes discipleship which is true prayer,permanent attitude of self-transcendence that is open to Gods reign, an attitude of obedience and poverty, it is through the needy,
through the vicars of Christ who disrupt my routine, that God exercise Her sovereignty over me, by making me renounce my comfort,my wealth, my time, my energy on their behalf, then inviting me to make myself poor for Gods Kingdom and by that means to be-
come a disciple of Christ.
My everyday life here, my own Christian life to link MISSION AND INCULTURATION as the book had given 7 ways, are for further
reflection on my part too. But what touched me most this time, where I got the title of my reflection was, when something was saidabout interiorization process. It says that interiorization process can be helped by sociological theory of identity. Commitment impacts
the finding of meaning identity salience and the finding of meaning impacts choice of roles. This implies: personal struggle for incul-
turation will be helped by commitment, a courageous turning your bridges behind you how much a person cuts off former relation-ship and takes up new relationship. And yes my journey as a missionary here continues. There are so much to experience and still theuncertainties of what the future is, yet I would like to end this reflection again by quoting from a book.

Catholics in Pampanga vow to gather 1M signa-
tures vs RH bill

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, PhilippinesAll 91 parishes under theArchdiocese of San Fernando buckled down to work on Tuesday, in gather-ing at least a million signatures from Catholics in Pampanga against theproposed Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2008.
The signature drive rolled a day after Archbishop Paciano Anicetolaunched it during the 52nd canonical coronation anniversary of the Virgendelos Remedios, the patroness of the province.
"Let's fight the culture of death, the anti-life conspiracy. [Let us] oppose thereproductive health bill," Aniceto, 71, told some 30,000 devotees who gath-ered for a Mass on the open field of the Villa del Sol here.
"We have given out the forms. We will gather at least one million signaturesagainst the RH bill," he told reporters at the close of the event.
Aniceto said the RH bill, which he said promoted the use of modern con-traceptives, was part of a global conspiracy against life. The Catholic Churchaccepts only the natural form of planning in population management andconsiders abortion a mortal sin. The RH bill does not contain any provisionallowing abortion but Catholic bishops fear that the measure would lay thegroundwork for the legalization of abortion in the country.
"The conspiracy is not only in the Philippines; it involves the United Na-tions Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), affluent nations, NGOs(nongovernment organizations) in America with business interest herewhose purpose is to generate profits for their pharmaceutical industry, Ani-ceto said in a mix of Filipino and English.
It is not the health or dignity of the family that is being defended here. It isgreed and profit motive that is the main goal of this conspiracy against life,"Aniceto said.
For lack of time, he said he did not read the manifestoes from the FamilyLife Forum chapters in Bicol, Cebu and Mindanao that earlier expressedsupport for the effort of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines'commission on family and life to have the RH bill rejected in Congress.
The signature campaign in Pampanga will be completed in two months,according to Aniceto, chair of the CBCP commission.
At the event's venue, parish pastoral councils hung about 20 streamersthat either condemned the RH bill or asked Catholics to protect the sanctityof lives and families.

Archdiocese of San Fernando na kami'y tutol sa RH bill dahil hindi nito gina-galang ang sagradong origin, kahulugan, valor ng buhay ng pamilya lalo namga babae at mga anak (We, as members of the Archdiocese of San Fer-nando, are doing this to show that we oppose the RH bill because this doesnot respect the sacred origin, meaning and value of life of families, espe-cially of mothers and their children)," Aniceto said.
He said the launch was timed with the anniversary of the coronation of thepatroness, she being the mother of life.
"Mama Mary gave life to the light, the way and truth, who is Jesus Christ,"he said.
He said he already gave up hopes for dialogues with the author of the bill, Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, adding the latter had issued state-ments expressing his position to push the measure into law.
"For the Church, there is no compromise for morality and the Ten Com-mandments. The Fifth Commandment is, 'Thou shall not kill,'" he said.
In July, Aniceto asked President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to clarify herposition on the RH bill.
Lagman said Arroyo should respect the decision couples would make onwhich family planning method to use.

International Migrants Chusok Festival Held
The International Migrants Chusok Festival was held last Sun-
day September 7, 2008 at the Tongsong Auditorium. The event
was organized by the Archdiocesan Pastoral Labor Center headedby Fr. Jack Trisolini and Fr. Ho Eu Jin.
Participants from the Philippines, China, Korea, Vietnam,
Thailand, Japan and other countries participated the event. The
event showcased excellent performers from different countries.
The participating countries showed their own unique cultures by
showing their traditional as well as modern songs and dances.
Lucky audience and participants received some prizes. Foods
from different countries were served after the program.
The Philippines was given eight (8) slots for the singing con-
test and the contestant from the Philippines got the grand prize,
Mr. Leonardo Altejos, who sang a song by Tom Jones entitled I
Who Have Nothing. The second prize winner was from Japan,Tha Young Lee, followed by Vietnam, Cham Bi who garnered
the third prize.
The program was hosted by Prof. Emely Dicolen-Abagat, and
Fr. Peter Sam, SVD.
This event is held annually to show the migrants solidarity
with Korea as they celebrate the Chusok, or Thanksgiving Holi-
day.
