QUESTION: How can I make my hair grow faster?

ANSWER: Sorry, but you can’t speed up hair growth. Hair pretty much grows at a maximum rate of ½ inch per month. (perhaps a little quicker in the summer than the winter). And maximum hair length is determined by the shape and the width of the hair shaft, which is purely genetics. But….there is a number of things that may slow down hair growth such as; poor hair care regimen, poor diet, illness, medication and emotional stress. These things can affect the health of the hair follicle therefore not allowing hair to grow to its full potential.

QUESTION: I never cut my hair so why won’t it grow long?

ANSWER: In order to grow your hair long, it is essential to get the ends trimmed regularly. (every 6-8 wks) The purpose for this is to keep the ends “blunt”. Without regular trims, the ends of your hair will become “split” and either break off or continue splitting up the entire hair shaft. It will break off faster than it grows! Along with regular trims and salon products, make sure to use a quality brush or comb. Don’t over brush your hair and using a wide tooth comb is gentler when hair is wet. Also be careful not to constrict hair with tight bands, hats or braids.

QUESTION: My hair is fine and I am thinning badly as I get older. Why? And what can I do?

ANSWER: Both men and woman can experience hair loss as they get older and this is only partly caused by genetics. Other factors are stress, nutrition, health, medications and the environment. These factors contribute to unhealthy conditions on the scalp and in the follicle, which in turn contribute to hair loss. Losing more than 50 hairs a day may be an early indication that your hair is thinning. What can you do? Relax, eat well and exercise. And to create and maintain a healthy scalp environment, there are non-drug shampoos and conditioners available that keep follicles free of toxins and nourish the hair bulb.

QUESTION: Is blow drying my hair every day damaging?

ANSWER: If done properly, blow drying your hair daily isn’t damaging. Over drying your hair with high heat will deplete its natural moisture and may cause breakage so use a lower temperature setting and keep the dryer moving. You may consider a diffuser if your hair is curly or a nozzle for straightening. After shampooing, towel dry hair lightly, apply your styling products, comb or brush hair into desired shape and let it air dry half way. To add fullness, use your dryer to finish the look. This method is gentle on the hair and easier on the arms!

IF A BRA IS TOO LOOSEWhen women think of a loose bra,

what mostly comes to mind is poor support - which is definitely an issue. The bosom is not as uplifted or rounded without the proper support. But what women rarely think about it chafing and rashes. When you move against the looser fabric, instead of moving with you, you rub against it, over and over, all day long. Over time this can result in sores and rashes. And perhaps even worse, a doctor may not even realize that this skin irritation is being caused by a bra and so the simple cure - a new bra - eludes some.

IF A BRA IS TOO TIGHTWe're all guilty of it - holding onto

clothes for far too long. And often wehold onto what used to fit us long after

our shape has changed. With bras it seems like adjustable straps and band extenders are the answer - but they're not. The only thing that will fix a poor-fitting bra is a new bra.

With tight bras, grooves can dig into the flesh both around the chest and especially in the shoulders. Some women experience redness and pain in these areas because the fabric is just too tight. And worse, when something like a band-extender is used, it throws off the mechanics of the bra and puts pressure on the body where it shouldn't be.

A tight, ill-fitting bra can also result in muscular pain as the weight of the bosom is born in ways unintended by the bra's maker. If you have neck, back and shoulder pain, your bra could be part of the problem.

DIAGNOSINGAND SOLVINGBRA PROBLEMS

If you think you have problems in bra fit, you probably do, so get a check-up. No, this check-up does not require a paper gown, this one just requires

stopping in at a lingerie store that performs professional fittings. Staff can look at the fit of your existing bra and see where the problems lie. They can then get you into something that will relieve the stress on your body. This professional fitting can relieve the pain and have you looking and feeling your best - no prescription required.

VALLEY LIVING HEALTH & LIFESTYLE THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

Tasty, healthy, and varied lunches right through the school year? Is it an impossible dream for busy parents? Not with a bit of discipline and a few good ideas! Filling a lunchbox with a healthy, balanced lunch just means knowing which products to choose at the grocery store.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLESChoose seasonal fruits and vegetables.

As soon as you get them home, take a few minutes to cut them into portions that will be easy to slip into a lunchbox. Build up a stock of small containers of sugar-free apple and mixed fruit sauces as well as 100-percent-pure fruit juices.

GRAIN PRODUCTSWhole grain products are a great source

of fiber and satisfy the hungriest of children, allowing them to concentrate on their school work. Be sure to purchase whole grain breads and wheat bagels, tortillas, and crackers at the grocery store. The same thing goes for pasta products. As for rice, opt for brown rather than white and add quinoa and couscous to your shopping list for more varied menus.

DAIRY PRODUCTSDepending on their age, children should

drink between two and four portions of milk and substitutes per day. You can replace milk with an enriched soya beverage, rice milk, or almond milk if there is no nut ban at your child’s school. Look

for yogurts with a fat content of 2 percent or less. The smaller bottles of pro-biotic drinks and cheeses in individual portions are also great choices. Be vigilant, however: many stirred yogurts and yogurt drinks are high in sugar.

MEATSTo prepare healthy lunches in short order,

keep on hand a few hard-boiled eggs, cans of tuna or salmon, and cooked chicken. If you use ham in sandwiches, try to buy naturally cured meat. If your neighborhood school allows them, walnuts and almonds are a great alternative source of protein and are delicious combined with a fruity snack.

This uniquely designed strainer from Cuisipro turns ordinary yogurt into thick, creamy Greek-style yogurt or yogurt cheese. Simply place the mesh insert into the white container. Add yogurt into the strainer, snap on the lid and place in the refrigerator. The longer the yogurt drains, the thicker the yogurt cheese will be.

IT’S A SNAP!CUISIPRO YOGURT

CHEESE MAKERSaffron, derived from

the flower of the saffron

crocus, is the world’s

most expensive spice by

weight. First cultivated in

Greece, it’s been used as a

seasoning, fragrance, dye

and medicine for more than

3000 years. Its history is

epic, its flavour revered.

The saffron crocus blooms

for one week of the year,

producing three stamens

that must be delicately

handpicked and dried. One

ounce of saffron contains

14,000 of these tiny saffron

threads, picked from more

than 4,200 flowers.

Saffron is savoured in

many cuisines around the

world. In India it flavours

biriyani rice, pilafs and

sweet treats like ice cream.

Saffron scents French

bouillabaisse and is an

essential ingredient in

Spanish paella. Italians

showcase saffron in the

popular Risotto Milanese.

Add to coffee with

cardamom for a Middle

Eastern hot drink special.

Saffron sweet cake is a

popular Scandinavian

dessert.

Fortunately a little saffron

goes a long way. A pinch is

enough to delicately mingle

with an array of ingredients.

Saffron layers each recipe

with subtle flavour and

imparts its characteristic

golden colour to every

dish. Heat releases saffron’s

flavour complexities so it’s

best steeped in hot water,

stock, wine or even milk

before being added to a

dish.

Saffron threads add

a hint of luxury and a

sophisticated sweetness

to desserts. It can be used

anywhere vanilla goes since

the flavour profiles are

similar - sweet, heady and

musky. Try it in custards,

cakes and cookies. It’s a

wonderful addition to bread.

A small pinch adds brilliant

colour, aroma and flavour

in many classic rice dishes,

including many risottos,

pilafs and paellas. A few

saffron threads in a seafood

soup, beef stew or tomato-

based sauce simmers to a

flavour that is richer, fuller

and more aromatic. Saffron

naturally compliments

dishes featuring poultry,

potatoes and shellfish and

provides the golden spice in

many curries.

Enjoy experimenting

with this alluring spice.

Whether you dress it up

or down, saffron is worth

getting to know. It's a luxury

that will pay for itself in

its versatility, depth and

subtleties of flavour.

for waffles or pancakes. Use it in soups, sauces and salad dressings. Rich and creamy, it’s a healthy alternative for desserts including cheesecake. It adds flavour to sandwiches, bagels and baked potatoes and is delicious spread on toast and crackers.

Yogurt cheese also has many healthy benefits. As well as being naturally low in fat, it contains protein and is rich in calcium. It gives your immune system a boost, aids in digestion and can help lower your cholesterol.

This patented design from Cuisipro includes a recipe book. Top shelf dishwasher safe.

BOOK CORNER

For over fifty years we have come to eagerly anticipate the delights of CBC Radio's annual Massey Lecture Series. This year’s edition features one of the world’s leading physicists reflecting on the impact of science on our thinking and the resulting social changes that new thinking has produced.

If the detailed calculations of unpacking quantum equations or the mathematics of relativity leave you cold, this is the book for you! Neil Turok, formerly of Princeton and Cambridge Universities now heads the Perimeter Institute at the University of Waterloo and dabbles in cosmology and quantum physics as part of his “day job”. But these Massey Lectures are part of his other agenda: explaining the mysteries of cosmology and science to the lay person searching for a deeper understanding of how and where the universe came from. And he also means to change the ways we determine who is included in that discussion.

Turok brings easy understanding of the progress of science over the millennia, shows the ways in which it has changed our thinking, and how that changed thinking has changed our social order. Now he’s pointing the way to keeping that movement moving, to building a more inclusive scientific community by bringing in the next generation of scientists emerging from the developing world.

World traveling is the latest trend in home decorations, whether you are inspired by actual trips abroad or simply by your love for other cultures. Be warned, however: an ethnic décor can only succeed if you choose one style and stick to it. Here are three exotic suggestions to inspire you.

INDIA IS MAKINGA COMEBACK

Indian-inspired ethnic décors are all the rage at the moment, no doubt because of their shimmering reflections, intense colours, and dark woods. Designers are offering two versions of this style. One is simple and modern, as you would see in a room decorated with traditional and rustic furniture blended with stone-coloured or white walls. The other version draws inspiration from the world of Bollywood, with tones of pink and orange or blends of fuchsia and soft green.

TRIBAL ATMOSPHEREAfrican tribal art no longer consists

solely of masks and ebony plates. These days an African décor is an understated one that blends the dominant colours of Africa: beige, khaki, ochre, black, and white. Typical African furniture placed on a zebra skin is the central theme of the room, which is then decorated with quality objects such as weapons, musical instruments, terra-cotta, bronzes, and colonial-type wooden furniture.

MOROCCAN MAGICThe main elements of a Moroccan-

inspired décor include mirrors, typical furniture, and lighting. The centrepiece is a North-African style rug. All curves and abstract geometric designs, the Moroccan style is based on vivid colours and hammered copper lamps.

Throwing a casual party to say farewell to summer requires very little effort. In keeping with the relaxed spirit of the season, we’ll show you how to pull off a stylish gathering with wine and cheese as they just simply go together and require minimal prep. You can then focus on easy decorations and properly paired wines. For a party like this, it’s less about the hostess’s culinary skills as it is about shopping prowess.

Every party must have some panache to show your guests you went that extra mile. Did you know that wine bottles include a decorator accent for your party? Corks! Start saving them now so you can use them to fill glass containers such as vases and wine glasses to artfully place corks around the tables.

Another simple, rustic way to decorate is to use a chalkboard to identify the wines and pairings. Simply precut a piece of hardboard and paint it with chalk board paint which you can find at your local paint store. Place it on the table as a runner and get out your chalk!

Draw an arrow between a bottle of wine and its selected paired item. Decorative slate cheese markers will dress up any party. You can chalk the name of the cheese onto each marker and then clean it off so the markers can be reused.

A wine and cheese party can be as intimate or as grand as you'd like. You can plan it in advance, by ordering wine directly from one of our local wineries or by making a day of trips to the local Farmers Market, Natural Pastures Cheese Shop, and the Cakebake Artisan Bakery. Or, you can throw it together in one day with a single trip to the local grocery store. Either way, with the following tips on wine and cheese pairings, we can help to streamline your shopping list. No matter what your approach, give yourself the morning of the party to shop and then set

up at leisurely pace, and gather your guests in the late afternoon when the snacking tastes best.

Included on your shopping list should be at least 5–6 types of cheese ranging in textures from hard to soft, a bottle of wine for each variety of cheese, bread and crackers, olives; nuts, and late summer fruits. Two hours before the party, open the reds to allow them to breathe, and chill the whites. Meanwhile, pull out your casual serving dishes, plates, platters, and glasses.

Wine and cheese complement each other beautifully — just keep a few guidelines in mind when making your selections.

ACIDITY:Consider the acidity levels in wine and cheese. Pairing wines and cheeses that are similarly high in acidity creates structure and balance. For a perfect match, Sauvignon Blanc and goat cheese

are equally high in acidity.

WEIGHT:Look for wines and cheeses of equal weight — a heavy wine can overwhelm a light cheese, and vice versa. Pair light bodied cheeses with light bodied wines and heavy cheeses with heavy bodied wines for optimal results. An ideal light bodied pairing is Pinot Gris and ricotta while a heavier wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon would pair well with an aged

cheddar cheese.

COMPLEMENTING FLAVORS:Select wines and cheese with similar flavor profiles. Hints of fruit, butter, and nuts are prevalent in both wine and cheese. Pairing a rich Chardonnay with a creamy comté will enhance the nutty, buttery flavors

in both the wine and cheese.

CHEESES TO AVOID:Avoid pairing wine with cheeses coated in black pepper or strong herbs, as these flavors tend to

overwhelm wine.

SERVING TEMPERATURES:Cheese should be served at 70 degrees. To get to that temperature, take the cheese out of the refrigerator about an hour before serving. W
