Developed for usage in rail vehicles
Sensors from lenord + Bauer – on the move worldwide for decades
Rail vehicles are subject to extreme environmental condi-
tions . They operate in wind and weather in all regions of
the earth . Above all the running gear must withstand heat,
cold, large temperature changes, wet, high atmospheric
humidity, dust and stone impacts .
Sensors mounted here are subjected directly to these ef-
fects . For decades our resilient products have been proven
in operation all over the world . We deliver ready-to-connect
systems for the acquisition of rotational speed, tempera-
ture or acceleration .
Our product program ranges from maintenance and wear-
free speed and temperature sensors, through individual
multichannel sensors and CombiCODERs, to high-resolu-
tion, incremental rotary encoders and axle encoders . We
also deliver target wheels ex-works on short delivery
times .
High availability and the stable function of the sensors are
crucial factors for our customers . These aspects are the re-
sult of our quality policy . We are certified according to IRIS,
DIN EN ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 . Our products for railway
rolling stock meet all common requirements such as UIC,
EN 50155 and IEC 61373 as well as EN 50121-2-3 .

Speed sensors with up to four channels
Speed sensors with up to four channels
customised acquisition of rotational speed and speed
Speed sensors acquire the smallest movements from 0 Hz
just as reliably as they acquire fast rotations at up to
25 kHz . They are entirely maintenance and wear-free, as
they operate without contact .
Magnetic sensors with proven technology
A sensor that comprises a permanent magnet and Hall ele-
ments scans a ferromagnetic target wheel . The magnetic
field in the sensor changes due to the rotating tooth wheel
and modulates the Hall voltage .
The electronics convert the modulated voltage into square-
wave signals . Here the signal frequency is directly propor-
tional to the rotational speed of the shaft . This measuring
technique has been proven for decades in rail vehicles
worldwide .
lightweight design thanks to eddy current principle
On the other hand, with the eddy current technique the
eddy currents induced by the measuring scale are acquired
by secondary coils . The target wheels used are made of an
electrically conductive material such as steel or alumini-
um . The weight-saving design is a real advantage . In addi-
tion, the sensor is ideal for use in environments containing
iron . As the sensor does not attract any magnetic particles
such as iron chips or dust .
The solution for numerous tasks
Our speed sensors output the signals on up to four chan-
nels . By means of electrical isolation the sensor can pro-
vide independent signals for several control units . If it also
outputs a fixed voltage, the control system can detect
standstill .
The direction of rotation of the target wheel is acquired ei-
ther via a directional signal or the evaluation of two chan-
nels with 90° phase offset . Here an index pin in the flange
ensures the correct assignment of the channels to the di-
rection of rotation .
resistant to interference fields
The inversion of the signals reduces the effect of coupled
interference signals . As the control system evaluates the
voltage difference between the signal and the inverted sig-
nal . In this way it obtains stable measured values even
with long connection cables or strong interference fields .
Sensors with current output are more suitable for usage in
extreme electromagnetic interference fields as current sig-
nals are less susceptible to electromagnetic fields . A posi-
tive side effect: the control system detects a wire break
without additional function monitoring .

Tailor-made for your application
Sometimes the mounting positions of the sensor and tar-
get wheel require a specific position for the active ele-
ments in the sensor tip . In this case we position the sensor
elements to suit your requirements .
We also realise special functions for our customers . Tell us
your requirement and we will integrate, for example, pulse
division or a self-test into the electronics .
Upon request we manufacture products for special appli-
cations such as the EEx area, SIL applications or UIC re-
quirements . We harmonise all the necessary components .
optimally exploiting the limited installation space
High quality monitoring systems ensure more safety dur-
ing operation . Here the individual systems require very dif-
ferent signals . As a consequence the number of sensors
required increases .
Anyone who needs to acquire an increasing number of
measured parameters on the running gear will find an ap-
propriate solution with our multichannel sensors . Up to
four sensor systems are integrated into one standard
housing . As such they provide signals for a maximum of
four control units .

incremental rotary encoders and axle encoders
incremental rotary encoders and axle encoders
Tailored robust encoder systems for extreme conditions
Precise measured values are required these days for real-
time regulation . Here rotary encoders with integrated bear-
ings are used . It is typical for these measuring systems
that the scanning unit and target wheel are integrated into
one housing . Both components are exactly matched .
With pulse numbers of up to 10,000 increments per turn,
the encoders cover all measuring ranges in the vehicle and
have been proven for decades in railway rolling stock .
Magnetic incremental rotary encoders
Our magnetic incremental encoders acquire the an-
gular change on a rotating shaft . The integrated sen-
sors contactlessly scan a target wheel installed in
the housing .
The magnetic sensor provides 1-Vpp differential
signals and HTL or TTL signals . It is possible to
derive from the signals generated the direc-
tion of rotation, the distance covered and
the speed of the rotating shaft .
one axle encoder – many output signals
For wheel slide protection, train protection and ancillary
applications on the bogie we offer special multichannel
axle encoders . They provide different signals for several
control systems and therefore exploit their full potential .
The sensors provide independent square-wave signals on
up to eight channels . These signals are output by the inte-
grated push-pull electronics with up to three different
pulse numbers . Output takes place either in voltage or
current levels .
The channels can be configured and output individually
or in groups with fixed phase relationship . In this way
the characteristics of the output signals can be
matched exactly to the control units . As such you ob-
tain a solution individually tailored to the applica-
tion .

incremental rotary encoders and axle encoders
Measuring systems for high loads
Extreme shaft loads often occur in railway rolling stock . For
this specific case we offer precision speed sensors with a
special coupling .
The integrated, flexible hollow shaft coupling with a diam-
eter of 20 mm also permits mounting on motors with high
axial and radial shaft motion . Alternatively the rotary en-
coder is available with a 16 mm solid shaft .
Up to 5 independent, fully encapsulated sensor modules
can be positioned in a stainless steel housing . We individ-
ually adapt each module to your application and the con-
trol system . As such the system is of versatile application .
Withstanding extreme weather conditions
All rotary encoders provide exact measured values even
with changing ambient temperature, fluctuations in hu-
midity, heavy vibration, and condensation .
Additional protection measures can be selected for special
environmental effects, for instance protective lacquers or a
condensation drain . Talk to us .

Temperature sensors and combicoDers
Temperature sensors and combicoDers
clever solution - the acquisition of temperature, shock and rotational speed
Temperature acquisition with minimal effort
In motors and bearings the temperature is a parameter
that is often monitored to detect uneconomical or even
critical states at an early stage . Our temperature sensors
are used here .
Compact, robust platinum resistance thermocouples ac-
cording to DIN EN 60751 form the basis for these sensors .
The sensors are checked according to EN 50155 and meet
protection class IP 68 . The length of the stainless steel
sensor tube is adapted to the related installation situation .
If necessary, we also manufacture the flange to customer
requirements .
If temperature and rotational speed in the drive motor are
required, we combine the temperature sensor with any
speed sensor using a cable harness . The connection via a
common connector significantly reduces installation effort .
Three systems in one housing
Due to limited installation space it is often necessary to
combine several sensor types in one system . Our Com-
biCODERs provide the perfect solution here .
On the CombiCODER we integrate speed, temperature and
vibration sensors in one housing . In this way these sensors
acquire, for instance, the vibration behaviour on the bogie
and the temperature in the bearing . We combine the com-
ponents individually to suit your requirements and adapt
the shape as necessary .
The installation and maintenance effort is also significant-
ly reduced by using CombiCODERs . Where up to now, three
to four different sensors had to be installed, now only one
sensor needs to be installed and tested .

The right target wheel for every speed sensor
The right target wheel for every speed sensor
Precisely manufactured and individually adapted to your needs
For the measurement of rotary movements, speed sensors
form a unit together with target wheels . To obtain optimal
output signals, target wheels must be manufactured with
high precision . Only in this way can the output signals from
the sensors be generated with the necessary quality .
We deliver standard ferromagnetic target wheels ex-works
on short delivery times . They are suitable for attachment to
shafts with a diameter from 8 mm to over 500 mm . Size,
inside diameter and design of the target wheel define the
strength and the maximum permitted rotational speed .
In your enquiry please state the maximum rotational speed
at which the target wheel is to be used . We will then evalu-
ate the application and also undertake a calculation using
FEM in special cases .
The perfect unit: target wheel and sensor
• Target wheel matched to your sensor with individual inside diameter
• Quicker, more straightforward installation due to complete manufacture with bores, threads, feather keyways etc .

Guarantor for high reliability
Reliability and long availability characterise modern com-
ponents for rail vehicles . For this reason we place particu-
larly high value on high quality components and continu-
ous quality control . Therefore final testing is a fixed
element of our production .
Among other features we test the current consumption of
the sensor as well as the level, position and load capacity
of the output signals . For each individual product we save
the measured values and document all the data from the
final test . If required we prepare a product test certificate .

For our railway-specific sensors we undertake a type test in
accordance with EN 50155 and in this way ensure the re-
quired stable function of the electronics .
For some applications the aspects defined in the standard
are inadequate . In this case we prepare individual test pro-
cedures with you . In the end you receive a measuring sys-
tem qualified to your requirements .

applications
Sensors for safe operation
for decades our systems have been proven in many applications
On accelerating several thousand tons of weight, the con-
trol of the physical forces presents a technical challenge .
Today modern drive, brake and train protection systems
aid the train driver .
These systems must operate reliably in wind and weather .
Some components are directly subjected to the weather,
as well as impacts from stones and dust . Above all the sen-
sors must be resilient as they are mostly mounted on the
running gear, for example on the motor, on the wheel sets
or on the ends of the axles .
For this reason the electronic components in our sensors
are protected against extreme weather conditions, humid-
ity, shock and vibration by special manufacturing meth-
ods . Our long-lasting systems have been proven in rail ve-
hicles for decades .
We cover a broad range of sensor products for railway roll-
ing stock . Mostly we supply individual systems that we
have developed for an application in cooperation with our
customers .
common application areas
On the following pages we will show you our solutions for
the following railway applications:
• Rotational speed acquisition for drive control and traction monitoring
• Acquisition of the speed for automatic train protection
• Rotational speed, acceleration and temperature measurement for monitoring the bogie
• Rotational speed acquisition for brake control in wheel slide protection systems
Traction monitoring
14
applications
Traction monitoring
rotational speed acquisition
When modern trains are set in motion, the vehicles drive
up to 3,000 tons inertial mass, depending on train type . To
prevent the wheel sets from spinning, the drives are con-
trolled by intelligent control systems . They synchronise the
output of motors and distribute the power evenly between
the axles .
The inverters require reliable rotational speed signals for
the drive control . For this purpose, sensors monitoring the
rotational speed and direction of rotation of the drive are
installed on motor or gear . These sensors must acquire
standstill just as reliably as the achievement of maximum
speed .
robust sensors for rotational speed acquisition on the motor or gear
In many rail vehicles the speed sensors supply the meas-
ured values required . They acquire slow movements and
standstill just as reliably as fast rotational movements .
With a measuring range from 0 Hz up to 25 kHz they are
excellently suited for this task .
Alternatively our incremental rotary encoders are used for
drive control . They are characterised by high reliability
even under the most extreme shock and vibration loads .
our recommendation:
• Speed sensors
• Incremental rotary encoder
automatic train protection
15
applications
automatic train protection
acquisition of the speed
Systems for Automatic Train Protection (ATP) ensure,
among other aspects, that the speed allowed is not ex-
ceeded and the distance to the train in front is maintained .
The systems receive information on the occupation of the
section and speed limit from track-side equipment . From
the data received the ATP determines, for example, the
speed of the train . The train protection sends its own val-
ues back to the section for the trains behind .
robust incremental encoders for installation on axle
One control parameter for automatic train protection is the
speed . The system determines this parameter from the
axle revolutions per minute . The sensors used here meas-
ure the rotational speed directly at the wheel set and are
subject to extreme environmental effects, depending on
the installation position .
Our robust speed sensors and multichannel incremental
encoders (also referred to as "axle encoders") are particu-
larly suitable for continuous usage on the running gear .
They provide reliable measured values for automatic train
protection even at high loads .
our recommendation:
• Axle encoders (multichannel incremental encoders)
• Precision rotary encoders
• Speed sensors
Bogie monitoring
16
applications
Bogie monitoring
rotational speed, shock and temperature acquisition
Bogies are subjected to high physical forces . They not only
carry an enormous weight, but also braking, acceleration
and centrifugal forces act on tyres and bearings . For this
reason, continuous monitoring for the early detection of
wear and material fatigue on the running gear is of particu-
lar importance .
Technical faults can manifest themselves in various ways .
Therefore, different measuring systems are used for the
monitoring of bogies . Along with the rotational speed, e .g .
the bearing temperature is monitored .
Speed and temperature sensors for installation on the bogie
We have been manufacturing robust sensors for rotational
speed and temperature acquisition on bogies for many
years . They ensure the detection of safety-relevant events
and timely correction of malfunctions .
Based on decades of experience in railway rolling stock,
we have a very extensive range of speed sensors . The tai-
lor-made temperature sensors with tube lengths from
30 mm to 200 mm are excellently suited to bogie monitor-
ing .
A large number of installation situations can be realised by
means of different housing variants and cable outlets . In
particularly difficult cases, we adapt our standard encod-
ers to your requirements .
our recommendation:
• Speed and temperature sensors
• CombiCODER
Bogie monitoring
17
applications
Bogie monitoring
rotational speed, acceleration and temperature measurement in one housing
All rail vehicles, whether locomotive, tractive unit, train set
or goods wagon, must be operated safely and reliably even
under the harshest conditions . The requirements on mod-
ern rail vehicles have been steadily increasing in recent
decades . To ensure safe operation, the acquisition of more
and more measured parameters is required on the bogie . A
very limited installation space is in contrast to this trend .
Multifunctional sensor systems optimally exploit the limited installation space
Developed from our proven magnetic sensors for rotation-
al speed acquisition, combined systems optimally exploit
the small installation space . As such, for example, the
CombiCODERs provide rotational speed signals on up to
three channels and also acquire the vibration behaviour on
the bogie and the temperature on the bearing .
For this reason, they are ideally suited to applications with
little space . Electrically the combination sensors are con-
nected using only one coupling; this feature significantly
reduces the cabling effort .
Their usage also clearly reduces the installation and main-
tenance effort . Where up to now, three to four different
sensors had to be installed and tested, this work is now
required for only one system .
our recommendation:
• CombiCODER with - Speed sensor - Temperature sensor - Acceleration sensor
• Multifunctional axle encoders

Wheel slide protection systems are used to prevent the
blocking of wheel sets during the braking process . Similar
to ABS systems on cars, they individually control the brak-
ing force on each single axle and in this way prevent the
formation of wheel flats . In this way vibration that causes
wear on the bogie and the rails is prevented .
Wheel slide protection systems evaluate the rotational
speeds of the individual vehicle axles for exact brake con-
trol . Our speed sensors are used worldwide for this pur-
pose . Due to the installation position, they are exposed to
extreme temperatures, shock, humidity and vibration .
Speed sensors withstand the extreme environ-mental conditions
Our magnetic sensors contactlessly scan a target wheel
and therefore operate entirely wear-free . The delicate elec-
tronics are protected by encapsulation, for this reason they
withstand even the extreme environmental effects .
The recommended speed and multichannel sensors com-
ply not only with common railway standards, but also with
the conditions from the UIC for usage with common brake
control units . For this reason, they are particularly appro-
priate for applications in wheel slide protection systems .
our recommendations:
• Speed sensors
• Multichannel sensors
