Thinking About Downsizing?Let’s Talk About It.

“We have bought and sold several residences in our life. Our recent experience working with Anita was excellent for many reasons. After making initial contact she did her research on the immediate vicinity and was very prepared. Her market assessment was thorough, she summarized the value and timing, as well as likely buyers, clearly and accurately. Her sourcing and personal involvement in staging, showing our residence and negotiating advice was executed nicely. Anita took a caring role in handling a delicate situation with my Mother, the tenant and the whole family appreciated her thoughtfulness and understanding throughout the process. We received good value and appreciated Anita’s assistance and expertise.” Ian & Barbara L.

I can help you decide if it’s the right time for you.

From the Manager’s Desk

I am sitting in my office on the last day of working with the Town of Oakville’s Seniors Services Section. I can honestly say I have loved my job for the past 28 years and have been fortunate to have worked with and have known so many amazing people. I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes, congratulations, advice, cards, gifts and parties. I want to say thank you to each and every one of you for making me feel very special.

I’m excited for this next chapter of my life. I shall miss seeing everyone on a daily basis but know that I will never forget you.

Nancy Beddoe

Welcome 2020

Welcome to a new year and a new decade! 2020 is going to be a great year and we are excited to share the incredible programs and services with our new and returning members.

Did you know there are over 150 registered programs and drop in activities for you to participate in? Maybe this is the year you try Yoga for Men, Bone and Joint Therapeutic care, Circuit Training or Hall Walking with Strength Training. If drop-in’s are more your style, check out a book club, pole walking, social dancing or maybe a choir. The possibilities are endless.

Special events continue to impress and amaze our members. Volunteers and staff plan and execute the best of the best for your enjoyment. Peek at the Special Events section to find out what’s coming to a Centre near you.

The staff team is always excited to chat with you about what’s coming up, things you have seen or heard about in the community that might be of interest to our members and of course your experience at our Centres. Stop by to say hi, catch up and tell us what you are most excited to try this year.

With continued thanks for your support of Oakville Seniors Service and best wishes for a happy, healthy 2020.

Your Seniors Services Team

Mission: To provide a welcoming, accessible and supportive environment for Oakville seniors that embodies social, recreational, health and wellness activities. Unique programs and services are dynamic, supporting the continuous well-being of seniors and responding to their changing needs.

Seniors Services Membership Fees

Age 2020 FeeAge 50 – 79 $42Age 80 – 89 $21Age 90+ No charge

Please note non-residents will be charged the non-resident fee (an additional $10 plus HST) on their Seniors Services membership.

Seniors Services Membership CardsA current Seniors Services Membership Card is required to register in all Seniors Services (50+) programs, to attend drop-in activities, special interest clubs and day trips. Membership is valid for one year from the date of purchase and fees are based on your actual age at time of renewal or purchase.

You are required to scan your card at the front desk at all Community and Seniors Centres. Having to show or scan your card at each centre provides staff with accurate data on the usage of the facilities. Spot checks may be carried out during drop-in activities.

Should you have any questions about the process, please speak with a Seniors Services staff member.

Why do I need a current Membership?Membership fees help offset some of the costs of running the centres such as heat, hydro, snow removal, repairs, equipment, program supplies and general maintenance of the centres. In the interest of fairness everyone who participates in programs or events must have a valid membership. This way everyone contributes to the running of our centres.

There are no refunds for memberships.

Spring and Summer Program Registration Registration opens Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 9 a.m. Register online at oakville.ca.

Register by touchtone phone at 905-815-2000

To register online or by touchtone phone you will need:

• A current Seniors Services membership card (membership cards can only be purchased on site at the Senior Centres, community centres or at Town Hall.)

• A family PIN number and personal ID number. (obtained by calling 905-815-2000)

Methods of payment include VISA, MasterCard, American Express or credit remaining on your account.

To know if you registered successfully, once payment is complete, you will be provided with a confirmation receipt online as immediate confirmation. Please ensure you have an updated email address on file and check your email for program registration confirmation. Paper receipts will only be mailed to registrants who have not provided an email on file. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of your acceptance in the program and program details (location, time, date etc.). If you need to update your email address, you may do so on your on-line account, at the Registration department at Town Hall, community centres or at the Seniors Centres.

Other Ways to Register If you do not have a Family Pin or Personal ID number please call 905-815-2000. If you do not have internet access, terminals are available at local Oakville Libraries and at the Senior Centres.

Registration by drop-off, mail or by fax is available, but we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the online and phone options. Dropping off a registration form early does not guarantee confirmation in a program, in fact dropped off forms are processed in indiscriminate order.

To avoid disappointment and for immediate confirmation of availability, use the online or phone registration option. For registration inquiries phone 905-815-2000. Don’t forget you can now register online AFTER the program start date. But don’t wait until the last minute as popular programs fill up fast and those with low enrollments prior to the start date are cancelled.

Withdrawals and Refunds from ProgramsOnline timelines: Withdrawals/refunds can be processed online up to four days prior to the program start date. An administration fee will not be charged. Funds will be returned via method of payment used for the original purchase.

Phone and in-person timelines: Withdrawals/refund requests can be made for programs up to the start time of the third class by calling 905-815-2000 or visiting the Recreation and Culture office at Town Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The amount refunded will be the full cost of the program, less the cost of any classes already held. Withdrawal/Refund requests made by phone or in person are subject to an administration fee of $10 plus HST per transaction. Requests made to the program instructor or left on voice mail will not be considered sufficient notice.

After the third class of the program: Withdrawal/refund requests received after the start time of the third class of the program will be processed for medical reasons only for the remaining classes of the program and must be accompanied by a doctor’s note. These requests will be processed and prorated as of the date and time that official notification is received by the Recreation and Culture department and cannot be backdated. Medical requests will be prorated, but not subject to an administration fee. Requests made to the program instructor or left on voicemail will not be considered sufficient notice.

Please note there are no refunds for membership fees.

Program WaitlistsIn the event that a program is full, clients may be added to the waitlist. If space becomes available, the first person on the waitlist will be contacted and offered the space by email. The client’s response to accept and provide payment to confirm program enrollment is required within 48 hours, after which time, the offer will be cancelled and the next client on the waitlist will be contacted.

Out-of-Town Memberships and Registered Classes Members of the Seniors Centres who live outside of Oakville will pay an out-of-town fee for their memberships and each registered class in which they enroll ($10 plus HST).

Oakville’s Seniors Centres and the programs they offer are supported by the tax base of Oakville. While membership is encouraged and promoted to citizens of neighbouring municipalities, Town Council’s decision to charge an out-of-town fee for memberships and classes attended by non-residents is a reflection of their overall fiscal responsibility to the citizens of Oakville.

Special Events There are no refunds unless your ticket can be sold to someone on a waiting list. There is no immediate refund. Please allow time for cheque processing.

Day Trips Refunds will be issued only if your “place” is filled by another. Due to the overwhelming success of our day trips, there is often a waiting list. If you are unable to attend a day trip, please check with Tom/Marilyn before selling your ticket to a fellow centre member.

Official receipts for program registration are sent via email. Please ensure you have an updated email address on file and check your email for program registration confirmation. Paper receipts will only be mailed to registrants who have not provided an email on file and may delay your knowledge of acceptance into a class or your waitlist status in a program. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of your acceptance in the program and program details (location, time, date etc.)

If you need to update your email address, you may do so on your on-line IRIS account, at the Registration Department at Town Hall or at the Seniors Centres.

Centre Closures February 17 - Family Day (Colborne only) April 10 & 13 - Good Friday and Easter MondayMay 18 - Victoria DayJuly 1 - Canada DayAugust 3 - Civic HolidaySeptember 7 - Labour DayPlease refer to the posters for older adult centre closure details.

A Little Assistance Goes a Long Way Everyone should enjoy the benefits that participation brings. The Recreation and Culture Department would like to ensure that Oakville residents have the opportunity to access recreation and leisure services offered by the Town. To help make this possible, financial assistance is available through the Recreation Connection program. Based on total income of all family members, if you qualify you will receive an amount that can be put towards memberships or programs. Visit oakville.ca or your local community centre for more information.

Fire Drills As you enter any of the rooms at any centre, please be aware of the nearest fire exit, pull station and fire extinguisher. A diagram of the nearest location of these three items is posted just inside each room. Should you ever hear the fire alarm ring, leave the building immediately!

Emergency lights are installed in every room at the Centres and the lights flash when the fire alarm rings which alerts those with hearing impairments.

If you are unable to attend an event and you do not notify Kim at 905-338-4406, you will be charged for your trip.

Suggestion Boxes We are always receptive to comments and suggestions, even criticism (as long as it is constructive). Each centre has a suggestion box for your use. Let us know what you think. You may submit suggestions anonymously, but if you wish to have a response or answer, you’ll have to add your name and phone number. The suggestions boxes are opened and reviewed by the Operations/Advisory Boards at their monthly meetings.

Spectacular Showcase Another opening, another show and another success!

The pre-show performances by the Colborne Guitgang on December 28 and the Montclair Fiddlers on December 29 greeted the audiences as they arrived for the 8th Annual Spectacular Showcase at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre’s Black Box Theatre.

There was something for everyone as the audience was treated to cabaret style presentations by our performers which included solo singers, a variety of dancers (tap, belly and jazz), a magician, a ventriloquist, singing and dancing skits, two “kids” and seniors numbers by the Showcase Academy and a finale performance as the audience joined the cast in “Walking on Sunshine”. Did we mention that Elvis was on stage this year!

Under the outstanding leadership of Producer Kathy Carlin, Assistant producer Catherine Ross, Director Vince Carlin and Associate Director Johanna Boffa it all came together for a “spectacular” event. The afternoon of entertainment included the action on the stage as well as the interaction at the tables as people were able to enjoy beverages and snacks with family and friends during the intermission.

The variety of acts included performers with years of experience as well as those with minimal experience and lots of enthusiasm. If this sounds like you, consider joining the Showcase Academy when they begin their rehearsals for the next Spectacular

Showcase. If you love to perform on stage and have a singing, dancing, comedy, instrumental or other talent to share with the community, auditions are available. If you want to be a part of the fun but not necessarily in the limelight then a volunteer role behind the scenes is waiting for you!

For highlights as well as more information about how you can be a part of this fabulous event go to our website: http://www.oakvilleshowcase.ca

Policy Review Commitee The Policy Review Committee meets six times per year to address governance concerns and develop policies and procedures for all seniors’ centres. The PRC includes representatives from all centres and the minutes of the meetings are posted at all the centres.

The committee recently set the 2020 membership fee and discussed the age categories for membership.

Feel free to contact member of the PRC (members are listed in the minutes), if you have any questions, or would like further clarification.

Tour of Lights The 50th Annual Tour of Lights celebration took place on Monday, December 2 with 120 seniors from the community enjoying the Sparklettes performing in the Atrium of Town Hall while volunteer servers were busy topping up coffee cups so participants could enjoy sweet treats and holiday cheer. Thank you to the dedicated team of Transit drivers and staff whose coordinated efforts got everyone safely on and off the buses and for the lovely tour around town.

Did We Cancel Your Class? In order to be fair to all our participants by allowing sufficient time to choose alternate classes, staff need to make decisions about cancelling classes approximately one week prior to the start of each class.

If you choose to register at the last minute, you run the risk of the class being full or cancelled due to low enrollment. Either way, you’ll be disappointed and in the case of low enrollment, other people could be disappointed as well.

Please plan to register early for your classes – you won’t miss out on a favourite class and we won’t have to cancel classes that otherwise might have run.

Is your email address on file and up-to-date? Please notify your home centre if your email address has changed.

Trafalgar Park Community Centre 133 Rebecca Street.

Pick up times for each location are printed on the tickets.

Members must be able to get on and off the bus independently. If help is necessary you are required to have a friend or aide travelling with you. (A ticket is required). We ask that you remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion. Your escorts, Marilyn and Lynda, are in charge of all travelers and will address problems or concerns.

Thank you for your continued cooperation.

ROMAC - Sue Mayer

I volunteer with Oakville Seniors Services as a way to give back to the community and because I have found such enjoyment in the sport of pickleball. I started off as a player and discovered I loved the activity so much that I decided to join the ROMAC team as a volunteer.

I have found that my volunteer role has led to many wonderful friendships, experiences and opportunities. I enjoy being social and this role has afforded me that opportunity over and over again.

Recently, I took on the role of treasurer for ROMAC and I am responsible for the financial statements and day to day banking. I was also able to plan the 2019 Christmas party which was a smash success with huge attendance, incredible food, dancing and holiday spirit. It was a lovely way to end 2019 and I look forward to more volunteer opportunities and friendships in 2020.

IROAC - Maria Braun

Maria has been a member of the Iroquois Ridge Older Adult Centre since her retirement, back in 2013. She enjoys volunteering as a greeter. She is always eager to help set up and clean up after events at the centre. She views her volunteer work as an anjoyable way to give a neighbour a helping hand.

Maria often teams up with her friend, Rosemary, to organize the Seniors’ Got Talent Show while also performing hilarious skits. This year she is organizing a High Tea in the spring, as well as coordinating the 2020 Seniors’ Got Talent Show. Maria is also a long time member of the Thursday Discussion Group. She never fails to drop in to socialize with fellow seniors after her daily swim at the centre.

Thank you Maria, for all your help that is always accompanied with a warm and weloming smile!

QEPOAC - Ed and Eleanor Thomas

We joined QEPOAC five years ago, but it wasn’t until we began to volunteer with the Hall Walking Group that we felt we really belonged and felt a real connection with other members.

Our duties are easy, we make coffee and sometimes sell tickets for special events. These simple acts give us an opportunity to meet new people and to engage them in conversation on a variety of topics.

Our time volunteering has been a delight for us with lots of interaction and laughs galore. It also gives us an outlet to share with other seniors and we look forward to spending time with them each week. Spending time with these wonderful people is medicine for one’s soul, and we feel so blessed to have such a warm and welcoming place to come to and enjoy being together every week.

TPOAC - Linda Strike

Linda has been a member of the Special Events committee since 2014. Linda goes above and beyond to make the committee’s visions come to life with her unique creativity and entertainment knowledge. She loves to ensure others are always having a great time and wants to throw the best events ever.

Linda is a decoration fanatic and is always eager to please. She puts so much time and effort into our events for all to love and enjoy.

Thank you Linda for all your hard work and dedication!

Marilyn has a special way of encouraging others to find their volunteer spirit, she leads by example and is the first to say, sure I can help. For many years Marilyn worked the Tour of Lights, planned strawberry socials, pancake breakfasts, helped with fashion shows and open houses just to name a few.

Marilyn, we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Thanks for being a Senior Services Champion!

Colborne Centre - Marilyn CummingMarilyn is a very familiar face around the Colborne Centre. Her volunteer contributions are incredible.... and numerous!

Marilyn is an active participant in the craft group who make items all year long for the bazaar. She is a volunteer on the bazaar committee assisting with planning from January to December and is the set-up coordinator and a very busy salesperson!

Marilyn has worked on the front desk for over 15 years and has regularly been the smiling face you see every other Thursday. In addition, Marilyn is the convenor of the garage sale. You can find her buried under treasure every March as she coordinates the sorting, pricing and organization.

In her spare time, she is also the Convenor of the day trips. Marilyn plans, organizes and escorts day trips around southern Ontario. This is such a big role she even recruited her husband Tom to assist. Upon Tom’s retirement she enlisted a new partner in crime, Lynda.

Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends while helping out your community. A win-win situation!

If you are are interested in pursuing one of the many opportunites available please contact staff.

More crafty creations, mored baked items, more sparkly jewels, more knitted cozy blankets, more lucky toonie gifts and of course more fresh baked scones. And most important MORE incredible volunteers who crafted, knitted, polished, wrapped, baked, sold, parked, directed, organized and helped make over $8000 for the Centre You are incredible and we appreciate you.

Lounge Use

The Lounge is a very busy spot. In an effort to accomodate all users, please be aware that from 11:45 a.m. - 1p.m. daily, the tables are to be used for lunch patrons. Be kind, move over, add a chair or invite someone to sit with you.

Regularly scheduled drop-ins that are featured in the newsletter will be given priority seating during published drop in times. Casual lounge visitors may be asked to move to accomodate pre-scheduled programs. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated!

Reminders

During the winter months, the door to the patio is not an access point. Please use the main front entrance only.

If you encounter full parking lots, please feel free to park on the north side of Old Lakeshore Road. As long as you are parked on the road’s edge, facing west during the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., the town will not ticket or tow.

Please skip the perfume, lotion, cream or any scented products before visiting the Centre. Our scent free zone is safer for those with allergies or sensitivities when all we can smell is fresh baked scones or muffins.

The accessible parking spots at the front entrance are not made for two cars. Please only park one car per spot.

Colborne NewsHappy Golfers Golf Club

The 2020 golf season will be played at Pineland Greens Golf Club Safari Road, Millgrove. We will have split tee off times, similar to previous years, to accommodate those members that like to tee off early and those that prefer to play later in the morning. This will be confirmed at registration. The format will be the same as 2019 where the individual golfer will be responsible for establishing their tee times. In fairness to Pineland Greens Golf Club if you are unable to make your established tee time please advise them at 905 659-1271.

Registration will be Monday March 30th from 9:00 until noon at Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre for Seniors. If you miss this date, registration can be done anytime at the front desk for the centre. We anticipate the golf season will start at the end of April or early May depending on the weather.

They registration fee will be $30 to play golf for the season.

Our annual golf tournament and barbecue was held on September 9th at Pineland Greens Golf Club. We were fortunate this year compared to last year as we had good weather. We had 35 golfers attended the tournament and we want to thank all those members that participated.

I want to thank the committee members, Bob Towarnicki, Nina Gilbert and Hal Burkett for their assistance at the meetings and during the tournament that made the golf season successful.
