FAFSA Help at Jordan High

1. Many colleges/universities require the FAFSA for stu-

dents to be eligible for their academic scholarships in-cluding the University of Utah.

2. Schools use the FAFSA to award Needs Based scholar-

ships and additional grant money like the FSEOG. 3. FAFSA is required to be eligible for work-study jobs on campus to pay for school. 4. Parents can complete the FAFSA now using last year's taxes! Just link last years already filed taxes using the data retrieval tool and you're done. 5. Once you have completed the FAFSA, updating it every year is easier. Another benefit is parents ability to quickly update FAFSA so missionaries can qualify for financial aid when they return from their missions.

Mrs. Barnhill can help you complete the FAFSA. Room 1030 phone number 801-826-6332 or

[email protected]

Most colleges want your FAFSA by March 1, but sooner is always better.

Don’t miss out—complete your FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

It is the only way to qualify for Pell Grants, Work-Study, and Federal

Student Loans

Many colleges require it for scholarships.

What are Federal Student Loans? These are student loans backed by the federal government and

used only for higher education.

They have a fixed interest rate and are geared for students.

They are safer and more reliable than private loans.

All student loans must be repaid.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program?

The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS), provides a method for post-

secondary education students to earn funds that are used toward edu-

cation. You can use the money to pay for tuition and other expenses.

What jobs are available? The FWS Program provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and

graduate students with financial need to pay for education expens-

es.

Who can Qualify? US Citizens, US Nationals, US permanent residents, and the fol-

lowing with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94): Refugee, Asylum Granted, Cuban-Haitian Entrant, Status Pending,

Conditional Entrant, Victims of Trafficking, and Parolee.

Students must apply for FAFSA to qualify.

What is a Pell Grant?

A Pell Grant is a government monetary award based on financial need.

A Pell Grant does not have to be repaid as long as you

graduate from college. (Free Money)

This year the maximum award is $6,195 The amount of the Pell Grant depends on your financial need, the

cost to attend your school, and whether you are a full or part time student.

Pell Grants are free money for college.

How do you apply? By filling out

the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov

$2.6 billion in free college financial aid went unclaimed by 2018 high school

grads!

“More than half of high school graduates in Utah (55 percent) didn’t complete the application for 2018-19. The biggest mis-conception is families think they won’t get any financial aid, says student loan expert Kevin Fudge.”

“In reality, all families qualify for federal student loans and most will qualify for some other kind of aid.”

College Deferment

Deferment means postponing your college admittance to

a four year school for 1-2 years. If you are planning for military service or humanitarian/ religious

service (LDS mission, etc.) right after high school graduation, it is

recommended that you apply for college now and defer your enroll-

ment and scholarships for up to 2.5 years!

Why defer? It’s much easier to apply to college while in high school when

your transcripts and records are easily accessible. When you return from your service you can go right to college.

Be sure to fill out a parent release form so parents can act for

you while you are gone It’s easy! Once you are accepted to college, you fill out the de-

ferment forms online. All Utah colleges have deferment poli-

cies.

Make your life easier by applying to college now.

Planning for College

College costs include more than tuition and fees. There are books &

supplies, room & board, transportation and miscellaneous fees. Look of

“Cost of attendance” on college websites for specific information.

Take the time to research your schools and make comparisons. You

can control some of these costs. The only cost that won’t change is

tuition and fees.

Remember that your FAFSA will give schools opportunities to

offer you financial aid to pay for your education!

1. Compare all the financial aid packages you receive from your col-

leges. You can accept all offers to all colleges. Nothing is final until

you pay your deposit May 1. 2. Talk to your parents about what kind of financial assistance they

plan to contribute to your college costs. 3. Visit each campus you are considering. Make sure it is a good fit

and has programs you are interested in.

4. Choose the right school and program for you.

Fun Fact: In college you do not attend classes all day every day.

College 101

Requesting Letters Of Recommendation Some applications will request Letters of Recommendation from teach-

ers or employers who can speak highly of your accomplishments.

Have some teachers in mind who you could ask to write a recom-

mendation for you.

Write up a short paragraph about yourself; your accomplishments,

extracurricular activities you are involved in, and your goals for

the future. This will help the person recommending you to write a

good recommendation letter. Give at least 2 weeks notice prior to the due date for the letter to be

written.

Ordering Transcripts

Don’t miss out on college admission and scholarships; your

college application is NOT COMPLETE without your offi-

cial transcript.

How do I order a transcript?

Create an account at Parchment.com

Choose your high school

Select the destination colleges or organizations

Confirm order and send

You can track the status of your transcript through your

Parchment account. Please allow 1-2 weeks for colleges to

process your transcripts. Send transcripts well before admission deadlines.

Clear NGs before you send transcripts!

NGs make you look bad and impact your GPA

Is it too late to apply to college? NO

Apply to any-and-every school you might want to

attend so you have options!

Apply now; no commitment needed until May 1, 2020. If you meet all admission and scholarship deadlines,

colleges will offer you admission and financial aid pack-

ages. (See p. 6 for deadlines) You can compare packages, tour campuses, and make a

final decision by May 1. If you miss admission or scholarship deadlines, you will

miss out on opportunities.

Apply to at least 3 schools to improve your op-

tions.

You’ve Applied: Next Steps for College

1. Make sure all parts of your application have been submitted

2. Log into your college account and check your message cen-

ter. The school will notify you of anything that might be

missing from your application.

3. Check your Financial Aid account. This is where schools

notify you of scholarships, grants, and loans. You will need

to accept or decline your awards.

(Remember, you can accept them without

committing to that school.)

4. Visit the campus if you haven’t already.

5. Sign up for orientation

6. Sign up for housing if needed.

SELECTIVE SERVICE

The selective service is a government agency whose job it is to provide untrained manpower for the Armed Forc-es if there is a national emergency. Almost all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants between the ages of 18

through 25 must register with the Selective Service System (SSS) within 30 days of arriving in the United

States or 30 days before their 18 birthday.

Selective Service procedures do not apply to women. It is important to know that in a crisis, even though a man is registered, he will not automatically be inducted into the military but would be decided by physical and moral fitness within the lottery. Additionally, you cannot qualify for federal student grants or loans for college, job train-ing benefits and many state and federal jobs if you don’t register. To register and check out the CHART of who must register , go to www.sss.gov

NCAA Eligibility Center

College-bound student-athletes will need to meet the following academic requirements to practice, receive athletic scholarships, and/or

compete during their first year of college. During senior year, make sure that ACT scores and updated transcripts are forwarded to

NCAA. Transcripts can be requested from the Registrar's office. ACT scores must be mailed directly from ACT. Use 9999 as the code

on your registration form. For eligibility standards go to http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/eligibility_center/Quick_Reference_Sheet.pdf
