• It depends… – Admissions officers evaluate applications in different ways, depending
on how selective or competitive their college is.
• Levels of Selectivity – Open admission (all or most admitted)
• SLCC, Dixie State, Weber State, Snow College, UVU
– Less selective (>75% admitted) • U of U, Utah State
– Somewhat selective (50–75% admitted) • BYU, SUU, Westminster
– Very selective (25–50% admitted) • BYU-Hawaii, Colorado College, UCLA
– Most selective (<25% admitted) • Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc

Established in 2008
Based on nationally-recognized foundational core designed to help prepare students for college beyond high school graduation requirements
Fact: Students can qualify for 1, 2, or 3 of the awards. For example a student can qualify for the Base award only, Base and UESP, Base and Exemplary, or Base, Exemplary and UESP.

HB 144 Utah Exemption From Nonresident Tuition
• Requirements: – Student must have attended a Utah high school for
three or more years, validated through official transcripts
– Student must graduate from a Utah high school or obtained equivalent of a high school diploma (GED)
– Student cannot have registered as a student at a Utah System Institution prior to Fall 2002-2003
– Students without lawful immigration status must file affidavit stating that he or she has filed an application to legalize his or her immigration status, or will file an application as soon as he or she is eligible to do so.
Financial Aid for Undocumented Students
• Eligible for privately funded scholarships
• Not eligible for federal financial aid (FAFSA)
• Private universities have more flexibility in offering scholarships to undocumented students
• Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF)
– Maintains a list of scholarships that do not inquire about immigration status or require a valid social security number
