Woodridge Community Association News

Become a member of the WCA $5 a year

Woodridge Business Board $50 per year

Place the money with your name, postal address and telephone number in an envelope and put it in the silver

letter box in the wall next to the PO Boxes.

It has been disturbing to hear that in January a Woodridge resident smelt smoke from a neighbour’s property.

The Police and FESA have asked us to keep a special look out for arsonists. We ask you to do your job and report any suspicious activity straight away so these people can be caught. Either phone your local Fire Officer, or 000.

Remember to keep your fire breaks clear so that fire trucks can get on your property and keep you protected. After watching those programs on the TV recently we all need to keep vigilant and keep our neighbourhood safe.

Dear Volunteer Ambulance Folk,

On July 7th last year I ran over myself with the tractor on our orchard at West Gingin. Our neighbour called the ambulance service and a vehicle arrived, staffed with three volunteers, from your Woodridge Ambulance Service. I was very lucky and am now fully recovered.

I want to express my appreciation to the two ladies and a gentleman who came to my aid at such an inconvenient time - about 5pm on a Saturday! Thank you for being so gentle and compassionate. I am much indebted to your wonderful service and will never forget your care and concern for my welfare. Sincerely Eve Morrissey

From Editor: This letter was received last week and after a little detective work we think the people involved were Mike Cope driver, Jean Grimsey First Aider and Corinne Shields Ambulance Officer. Well done, we must also remember the people behind the scenes in Lancelin and Woodridge - secretaries, treasurers, co-ordinators, cleaners and phone operators, you all do a wonderful job. Following the Christmas get together in Woodridge, Lancelin organised warm jackets and jumpers for many of the Woodridge Volunteers this week, and new uniforms for our latest recruits. Please contact Bob in Lancelin if you feel you could help out. We are still in desperate need for Ambulance Officers.

The public meeting on the 14th January went well, Pauline Shelton has resigned as President and Marc Gillard will take over the role until the AGM in July. In business arising we heard from Alan Alderson - our councillor, that the buffer on Mr Do's new farm will probably end up being 300 metres rather than the required 500, as he took it to the government on appeal. Nothing new has been heard re the caravan park on the Moore River. Australia Post has not responded to our letter re street mail delivery.

The sand area next to the Art Studio was brought up and Marc is asking for anyone with any ideas for its use to write to the WCA and put it in the silver box.

The new air conditioners in the Woodridge Hall are really working well and we got a cash back from Fujitsu of $753.50. Following a successful Melbourne Cup, Spring Fair and Children's Christmas Party, there is just the Australia Day Breakfast which will have been held by the time this issue is printed. We hope you enjoyed our annual events and will join us for the Swap Meets during the year.

THANK YOU AMBO VOLUNTEERS

During the Christmas period between 24-28th December, the Woodridge Ambulance was called out 7 times, which is an unusual large number of calls for such a short space of time. The calls were morning, noon and night and the volunteers went willingly each time, even though it was the festive season and all had family and friends to celebrate with. Where would we be without these great people willing to give up their time for the community? The Ambulance service can always use more volunteers, first aiders, drivers etc, so if anyone can volunteer their time you will be very welcome. St Johns conduct first aid courses from time to time. Phone 0407998659.

Whilst we are talking about volunteers, don’t forget the Fire Brigade, we all rely on these people especially this time of the year and they will also welcome volunteers with open arms. Please give these worthwhile causes some serious consideration. Bev and Marcia (volunteer phone operators)

Woodridge Ambulance would like to thank Eleanor Ryan for picking up valuable equipment from Lancelin.

This month, we will be getting our hands dirty with Marble Painting, Face Painting, Wet Sandcastles, Puppets and Playdough. We meet on a Thursday morning from 10am - 12 noon and ask only for a plate of food to share. We even meet over the school holidays!! Yes, older kids are welcome. The New Year has brought the news of an addition into our group (mum Leesa and new bub Mikayla) and three new bundles of joy due in the middle of the year. Here we are again at the start of another Crafty year, and looking forward to an inspiring one!

About 30 ladies enjoyed a wonderful Christmas lunch with delicious meats and salads supplied by WA Spit Roast. After

a very relaxing lunch, we exchanged the gifts everyone had been working on - a cushion for our sewing chairs. What a wonderful array of designs we had. Everyone helped with the cleaning up after making it a great day.

Some of the craft that people do are scrapbooking, knitting, cross stitch, spinning, machine embroidery, crotchet and patchwork.

There will be a workshop to make a patchwork table runner coming up soon.

We meet every Tuesday in Woodridge Hall at 9am until 12 noon. Come along and join in and remember a smile is a wrinkle that shouldn’t be removed. Roz and Maureen

Gingin Observatory News

Happy New Year! This summer will be busy with stargazers visiting Gingin Observatory. There’s nothing better to do on a balmy summer evening than take a

tour of the skies and wonder at the universe. For the romantics, there’s the chance to spend a spectacular Valentine’s Day evening with the stars and for amateur astronomers, a hands on practical evening

learning how to use personal telescopes. VALENTINES UNDER THE STARS (THURSDAY, 14 FEBRUARY 2008) Here’s a delightful and different way to spend Valentine’s Day evening. Treat your loved one to a night with thousands of diamonds! The starry kind that is! Gingin Observatory sets the scene for a romantic evening with the stars. Learn of the love stories in the constellations and the romance of ancient astronomical mythology. The evening includes a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival and a special sweet treat at the end of the evening.

“Valentines under the Stars” is to be held at Gingin Observatory on Thursday, 14 February 2008 from 8.00pm to 10.30pm. The prices are $35.00 adults and $33.00 concessions. Bookings are essential. Call 08 9575 7740 or email [email protected]. Complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits are also included in the evening.

If you’re in the mood for a romantic dinner, Amirage Restaurant which is just 5 minutes drive from Gingin Observatory is preparing a special Valentine’s Day meal. This delightful 3 course dinner will be served from 6.00pm on Thursday, 14 February 2008 and will be finished in plenty of time before stargazing. The cost for dinner is $45.00 per person. Bookings can be made by calling 08 9575 7646. Amirage is licensed and also caters for bed and breakfast accommodation. If you’re staying, don’t forget to enjoy the spa! B.Y.O. TELESCOPE CLASS! (SUNDAY, 16 MARCH 2008) Having difficulties using that telescope you bought last year or the year before? Is it hiding in the back of the cupboard or garage? Now’s a great time to pull it out, dust it off and bring it up to Gingin Observatory where you can learn how to use it. With the assistance of the Gingin Observatory astronomers, this single evening class will demonstrate the basic techniques of telescope use, how to set them up and how to use them. Perfect for the beginner astronomer who may have bought a telescope but has never been able to use it to its full potential.

After perfecting your technique join in the fun as you start to focus your telescope on various objects in clear night skies. All the various astronomical equipment at Gingin Observatory will also be available for use and the astronomers close at hand to help out with hints and tips.

The B.Y.O. Telescope Class is to be held at Gingin Observatory on Sunday, 16 March 2008 from 7.00pm to 10.30pm. Spaces are limited and bookings essential. Call 08 9575 7740 or email [email protected]. The course costs $50 for the telescope owner. Other visitors are welcome at $25.00 adults, $20.00 concession and $15.00 children. Complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits are also included in the evening.

Letter to Editor

Sometimes we are unaware of what we have on our doorstep, both run by volunteers and commercial outlets. Recently I have come across two commercial outlets that I would like to recommend to you, maybe like me you were unaware of their existence!

One is Chocolate Drops cafe in Yanchep National Park. It is beautifully presented and the outlook is wonderful. A lot of local groups look for venues for lunches or inexpensive outings, this really fits the bill - chocolate and it is touristy, but they do a great lunch. If you fancy a treat with a few friends or rellies this is just the job and you can walk off the food in the National Park! Or take a boat trip round the lake!

The other one is in the new Shopping centre in Yanchep, yes Yanchep - not Two Rocks. I did not know it existed until I saw an advert in the Sun City News for a hairdresser and was then recommended by a hairdresser friend who has moved to Yanchep. Not only was I pleased with my cut etc but then got tempted by the beauty treatments and massage on offer. When I got there I found a small supermarket and a large cafe plus a doctors surgery and a real estate agent. Call in sometime and discover what's new in our area. It is just off the big roundabout that will join up with Marmion Avenue later this year (hopefully) towards the south. The only problem is the car park is already too small! Anne Stroud

Please make a note that the correct telephone number of the Gingin Medical Centre is: 9575 2300 and not the one listed in the Shire Directory.

Shire Office - Lancelin

Although the flag is not flying at Lancelin due to some malfunction within the flag pole, the Office is indeed open. The flag will be fixed in due course, but meanwhile please do not see the lack of it flying in the breeze as an indicator of “no one home”

Be Kind to Your Dog

As a reminder to dog owners and as protection for you and your pet, please be sure that all dogs over three months of age are registered with the Shire. A registration will insure that you and your dog are reunited in the event he/she is lost.

Dogs must be kept on your property and not allowed to wander. This means that dogs are not let out in the mornings to do their “rounds”. Wandering dogs will be picked up by Shire Rangers, and owners fined.

Also, please remember that only two dogs are permitted in town areas and all dogs must be kept on leads in public places, including parks, unless designated as a dog exercise area.

Shire Rangers will be conducting a town by town door knocking campaign to be sure that owners are complying with the Shire’s Dog Regulations.

Fire Control

Residents are reminded that ONLY gas or electric BBQs are permitted during the Prohibited Burning Period 22 November – 28 February each year.

Should you see residents or visitors to our Shire using wood for cooking, please contact our Shire Rangers on 0408 943 576 to report this hazard.

So far this season we have had no major fires, but the season is a long way from over and we must keep up our vigilance and care.

TO REPORT A FIRE, PLEASE CALL 000

Poultry Manure

The Shire of Gingin recently prosecuted a resident for using Poultry Manure outside of the permitted period as defined by the Health (Poultry Manure) Regulations 2001. Residents are reminded that Council remains committed to ensuring that the stable fly scourge is

appropriately managed and will continue to devote resources to ensure that the detrimental effects on residential amenity and the livestock industry are reduced to acceptable levels. The only months untreated poultry manure may be used, stored, supplied, transported and sold in the Shire of Gingin are June, July and August. Anyone found to be in breach of the regulations will be deemed to have committed an offence and may be liable for prosecution under the provisions of these regulations. Council’s Pest Control Officer conducts regular property inspections for the purpose of monitoring and enforcing compliance with these regulations and the Fly Eradication Regulations.

Gingin Landfill

As of 28 January 2008 there will be a new entrance into the Gingin Landfill as a result of the construction of a new recycling and tipping facility. The new entrance will be 300 metres to the north of the existing entrance. The new facility will be progressively upgraded to include the recycling of green waste, vehicle batteries, white goods, car bodies and other general steel products, paper, cans, engine oil, tyres and timber.

Please assist Council by noting the various recycling stations at the facility and separating these items from your general waste and following the instructions on site. Please ensure recycled items are not contaminated with other rubbish as recycling companies may reject them. From the opening of the new facility, the Gingin and Seabird Landfill facilities will be supervised to ensure only waste from properties within the Shire is accepted and waste is dropped off in the correct locations. Recycling facilities will also be progressively upgraded in Council’s other Landfill Facilities.

Free Mulch

Council recently conducted a green waste kerbside collection service. Collected green waste was chipped and the resulting mulch is now being offered free of charge to residents from the following locations: Guilderton - Old oval site off Wedge Street. Entry is just North of the Fire Brigade Shed; Ledge Point – Adjacent to tennis courts off Jones Street; Ocean Farm - Community Hall carpark; Seaview Park - adjacent to the Community Centre carpark on Seaview Drive; Redfield Park - behind the Fire Shed; Sovereign Hill - first property on the right at the estate’s entrance (Small quantity only); Woodridge - beside the Fire Station; Gingin - area between the pool and cattle yards; Lancelin - overflow area east of the Lancelin Primary School site .

For more information please call Council’s Principal Environmental Health Officer on 9575 2211.

Following on from the front page of the Mini Moore River News in December, Xclusive Lifestyle Changes in Redfield Park is now fully operational with over ten clients enjoying their lifestyle change and finding their youth again. We are currently offering our services to children between the ages of 12-17yrs of age complimentary. This entitles them to four personal training sessions per week with one of our experienced personal trainers. It is our commitment that we help change the obesity rate in our youth of today. By offering this complimentary, we hope to reach as many youths in the greater area to create life changing experiences for them - not only with their health and fitness, but also to create better self esteem amongst their peers. Through my experience, I know that their achievements will rub off on their friends and family. We currently have one youth training with us and are looking for more to join us.

I have just finished filming in Sydney for the Gladiators show in which I was a contestant. This will be shown on Channel 7 on Sundays beginning in March. The experience I gained there was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I enjoyed every moment of it, even though I was hit with the flu and fractured a rib in training in the weeks leading up to the filming.

If anyone is interested in some training tips that I did to gain selection, I would be happy to let them know.

Woodridge Potters Val, Maureen, Linda, Tracy and Chris

The Woodridge Pottery group had great pleasure in presenting to the community a large mosaic depicting the natural flora and fauna that surrounds our environment. This was our first attempt at a mosaic, which took us almost five months to construct. We all had our own ideas and projects and they certainly all came together so well we were so delighted at the outcome. It certainly looks beautiful and we are very proud of the comments given by the residents and visitors.

We wish to thank everyone who supported us. Our pottery group has restarted after the holiday break so who knows what our next project will be but we hope it will be as much fun. If you would like to join us, our club day is Mondays between 10am and 3pm, just pop in. We are located at the side of the Woodridge hall in the Art Centre.

Please contact either Maureen Craig 9577 1740 or Val Jones 9577 1350 should you require any information.
