PREFACE

Tbis special issue of tbe "Rendiconti" contains, in complete forni, the texts of the lectures delivered by the invited speakers at the international Conference on "Algebraic varieties of small dimension", promoted by the Seminario Matematico dell'Università e del Politecnico di Torino and orga-nized by ISI (The Institute for Scientific Interchange), which was held at Villa Gualino in Turinfrom 2nd to 5th October 1985.

The aim of the Conference was to bring together the best specialists in this important part of Algebraic Geometry in order to exchange ideas and discuss current problems. We are confident that we succeeded in achieving this goal.

We wish to thank the speakers for their excellent reading, the partici-pants for the warm atmosphere they were able to create during the Confe­rence and the sponsors (ISI, CNR, Università di Torino) whose financial aid made possible the organization ofthe Conference.
