FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Saskatchewan Environmental Industry and Managers Association10

SEIMA is stronger than ever, and that is a direct reflectionof the strength of our industry in this province.

It would be a mistake, however, to rest on our achievements. This dynamic sectoris changing rapidly as it expands, and as an industry association, we need to beaware of developments and how they can benefit our member businesses.

Our greatest task over the next several years will be to help develop the labourmarket capacity for the environmental industry. The SEIMA labour studycompleted in the fall of 2009 clearly demonstrates that unless this issue iseffectively dealt with, the economic growth of the province will be impacted. Arecent survey of SEIMA members supports the urgency of the issue, with 79% ofrespondents indicating that recruitment and retention is an issue for them. Ofthese, 57% identify this as a serious one for their operations. Without impactfulinterventions, this situation will only get worse.

Having the skills, products and services inside our province is critical to ourindustry’s growth. In turn, as an enabling sector, our industry’s health and vitalityare directly linked to the economic growth of the province itself.

In addition to the existing communications plan, mentorship program plan andthe creation of the SEIMA Labour Market Development Task Force, we feel that acentre for environmental innovation and expertise is a necessary part ofattracting and retaining the brain trust and the high level engagement that is acornerstone to a healthy industry. On that issue, we will soon be undertaking, onbehalf of our members, a more detailed study of the possible structures for thisresource.

While growing and constantly improving our program offerings, we are alsoproviding our members with ever greater opportunities for involvement withSEIMA – to bring their strength and influence to bear on behalf of the entireindustry. These champions – which include your volunteer Board members – arethe heart of SEIMA. The countless hours they generously donate make SEIMA astrong and representative environmental industry association.

And finally, another cornerstone for a healthy industry is a financially stableindustry association – an organization that can represent the dynamic operatorsand creative practitioners who are our members. We have already expressed, onseveral occasions and at several levels, our interest in being involved in thechanges that will result from the new EMPA and the Climate Change Foundation. How that manifests will evolve over the coming months.

I invite you to stay tuned and to become directly engaged with the work SEIMA isundertaking. Visit our website often and contact any one of SEIMA’s Directors orstaff with any questions.

Yours truly,

Lloyd Saul, President

FROM THE DESK OF THE C.O.O.

Saskatchewan Environmental Industry and Managers Association 11

In the coming two to three years, focusing on thedeveloping strategic plan, the work out of the SEIMAoffice will involve a LOT of communication.

The growth underway within the global environmental industry is amplified herein Saskatchewan due to many factors, not the least of which is ourcommodities-based economy. Also, energy is the elephant-in-the-room whereenvironmental issues are concerned, and Saskatchewan needs all options onthe table for development and innovation. Saskatchewan is the “Idea Province,”a place where innovation is woven into the fabric of the culture. We can domarvellous things when the necessary stimuli are in place; environmentalpractitioners have proven this time and again, and SEIMA wants tocommunicate that too. Our communications with public policy makers will beconsistent and repetitious: “Support our environmental innovators.”

We need to communicate to graduating students from across many disciplinesthat the environmental industry is an excellent choice for career development. Our Student Chapter heralds an ongoing strategy to stay connected with post-secondary students.

All public and most private educational institutions are offering ever moreprograms that will feed into the environmental industry labour market. TheSEIMA Labour Market Development Task Force is designed to bringstakeholders from many such institutions together to focus on the urgent needfor more such options, and to align SEIMA’s efforts with those of otherstakeholder organizations.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we need to communicate better to our memberswhat we do on their behalf. Our meetings with government ministers and high-level functionaries do not make in it into the daily newspapers. Monitoringdevelopments in the environmental industry is an everyday activity of our officethat is invisible to our members. And, our constant search for ways to add valueto their membership investment only hits the members’ radar when we discovera good fit and build it into our membership package.

We must be aware too that communication is a two-way exercise! We will belistening just as intensely – to our members, to legislators, to industrystakeholders, to investment communities. I invite your feedback regardingSEIMA’s operations and our plans.

Best regards,

Kathleen LivingstonExecutive Director & C.O.O.

BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE BUSY PEOPLEwho need all the support they can find tokeep their competitive edge sharp and theirskills up to date. Time is THE currency, andassociations help maximize return oninvested time for entrepreneurs.

Whether through need, desire, legislation or someother reason, interested parties join together to createan entity to serve the interests of participatingmembers. This is the basic function of anyassociation. Fundamentally, however, at the very heartof the decision to associate lies the need forinformation.

Member-based associations provide easy access toinformation for entrepreneurs who need to networkwith clients and competitors, with mentors andinterns, with suppliers and innovators. Associationsendeavour to provide cutting-edge information tomembers, saving each the time that would have to beinvested individually to acquire vital market data.Professional development through associations isoften tailored to the specific interests and challengesidentified by association members, exponentiallyincreasing the value of the time invested.

Government relations is a critical role for anyassociation, and exponentially so for business, trade,

industry and professional associations. Governmentsmake decisions based on the best information theyhave available. Associations go to great lengths toensure that the issues and challenges members copewith are clearly and comprehensively represented indiscussions with government representatives.

Beyond providing a two-way channel for information, associations help increase purchasing power formembers through affinity programs with suppliers.Aggregating the consumer demand from many, manymembers allows the association to negotiate moredesirable terms for necessary goods. This isparticularly relevant to small enterprises that arerarely able to command discount pricing.

Marketing support is another vital element thatassociations bring to their member businesses.Gathering industry contacts into a single point ofaccess enhances the customers’ ability to easily findthe supplier they need. Marketing support can takemany forms with website listings being the primaryand indispensible point of departure. Enhancingmembers’ profile at events such as career fairs, tradeshows, export trade missions, etc., also amplifiesmembers’ advertising and communicationsinvestment.

There are few expense options that return the numberand breadth of benefits that associations do.Indisputably, industry/business associations are agood investment in business building.

The SEIMA Whack & Roll Championship Open

The SEIMA golf tourney is a great occasion to get out and have arelaxed time away from the office and get a little networkingdone as well. It is an opportunity to reacquaint with existingcolleagues and business contacts and develop a few new ones. This year’s golf tourney, held on June 3, 2010, was verysuccessful! Once again, this was an 18-hole, Texas Scrambleformat on the intriguing 9-hole course at the Sherwood ForestCountry Club, just outside Regina.

Eschewing its humble beginnings, the Whack & Roll Open hasgrown into a popular kick-off to the busy environmental season.Even though the weather was a little less than hospitable thispast year (a bit of rain), the 2010 tournament was our biggestand most successful golf event to date, bringing out 42 golferswho simply ignored the rain forecasted. Despite the intermittentrain bursts, the Clifton Associates team of Greg Kuntz, TobyThorpe and Ryan Cooper, took home the SEIMA Whack and RollTrophy – for the second consecutive year. Rumour has it that theGround Works Environmental team will be practicing this winterwith a clear intention of de-throning the reigning champions.

Following the game, awards were presented where we handedout plenty of great prizes, including Longest Drive (men andladies), Straightest Drive and Closest to the Pin. Unfortunately,no one managed to come through under the pressure at thehole-in-one contest for a hybrid car. Following the awardspresentations, the fabulous build your own burger-buffet-and-dessert-bar offered another contest: who could pile thesundaes higher than the burgers!

A very big thanks goes to the organizing committee who did agreat job of planning this year’s tournament. Blaine Ganong(NRC), JP Martin (Communities of Tomorrow) and NickDalrymple (Entrepreneurial Foundation of Saskatchewan)deserve recognition for their stellar efforts leading up to theevent (as they didn’t get much accomplished on the golfcourse!).

SEIMA would also like to sincerely thank our sponsors for theirsupport of the various contests and holes.• Tundra Environmental Drilling• Clifton Associates• AON Risk Services

SEIMA would like to also thank all the companies andindividuals who participated in our golf event, as well as thosewho donated many of the great prizes for our prize table.

Mark your calendars for the SEIMA 2011 Whack & Roll Open onJune 2, 2011 in Regina.

A robust and growing economy is the enabler of everything wecherish in Saskatchewan. Health care, education, infrastructure, jobs, our quality of life – all depend on a healthy and competitive businessclimate.

Since the inception of Enterprise Saskatchewan two years ago, theprovince’s economic star has continued to rise, and in ways few couldhave predicted. The recent attention generated by our miningindustry in global media and investment circles has fixed a spotlightdirectly on Saskatchewan in general – our business environment, diverse assets, and climate of opportunity and potential.

The truth is, Saskatchewan has what the world needs. We are primedfor investment – a fact becoming more and more widely knownamong investors across Canada and around the world. Saskatchewanis being discovered, and the time to get in is now.

Enterprise Saskatchewan has a number of programs and services toassist businesses and entrepreneurs take full advantage of this openfor business climate – SLBA, LSVCC, Biz Pal, InfoSource are just afew.

In addition to performing the work of a traditional economicdevelopment agency, Enterprise Saskatchewan was established topush the competitive envelope – to advise government on the actionsneeded to reduce barriers to growth. This is being accomplishedthrough a Board of Directors representing businesses, industries, andcommunity stakeholders. A sustainable plan to power our province

SaskPower is committed to building a safe, reliable and sustainable power system for today, and for generations to come.

We’re working hard to meet this need by renewing our entire system – upgrading our existing power stations – and our power lines and poles.

We also need to add more power generation to our system. We’re exploring all possible options including wind, carbon capture, natural gas and hydro. And we’re building new power lines to deliver this electricity to Saskatchewan homes and businesses.

Powering the future

To find out more about our power plan visit saskpower.com/future.

To meet Saskatchewan’s growing need for electricity, SaskPower is renewing its entire system.

3XR manufactures and sells AmRHEX®, a patent pendingtechnology/machine that removes and recovers ammoniafrom flows where it occurs at high strength (800-3000mgN/L) such as digester solids, dewatering liquor (filtrate),Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, or landfillleachate. Each AmRHEX® can process up to about 700m3/d. The features which make AmRHEX® an attractivealternative for operators where ammonia (nitrogen)removal is mandated are the following:1. Low Capital Cost. AmRHEX® equipment costs muchless than biological alternatives.2. Low energy consumption. AmRHEX® power use isabout 1 kWh/kg N: this is 10% of the 10 kWh/kg Nrequired for biological nitrogen removal (BNR).3. Carbon Negative operation. GHG mitigation of 10 tonnesCO2 per tonne ammonia fertilizer (N) displaced byemploying AmRHEX®. In addition, there is no N2O released(a GHG released by BNR that is – 300 times as potent asCO2 and may contribute up to 90 tonnes of CO2 equivalenttonne N removed by BNR).4. Profit Center from Residuals. Recovered ammoniumsulfate fertilizer value is more than double the input costs.Depending on the purchase arrangement, 3XR managesthese residuals, and shares profits with the generatingentity (utility).5. Small Footprint. Each modular, prepackaged, computer-controlled, fully automated, self monitored AmRHEX® unitoccupies a footprint of approximately 3 m x 11 m, about1/10 to 1/4 that required by BNR. This is of great importancewhere ammonia removal is an added requirement to anexisting plant, where the site is often built out and space isat a premium.

Clearflow Enviro Systems Group Inc. is a full servicecompany providing engineered solutions for waterclarification (industrial reuse or release, waste water, sediment and metals removal), soil stability and erosioncontrol and de-salinization solutions for both soil andwater. Clearflow has spent the last three years working withNational Research Council of Alberta and the Universitiesof Alberta and Guelph to prove products areenvironmentally friendly and can be used in-situ, allowingfor release directly back into the environment, or forreclaiming water for reuse (Toxicity Reports are availableoff our website). As these products and processes are site-specific andbecause we match our anionic polyacrylamides to the soiland water chemistry of your area, cost and effectivenessare optimized. Because the product is anionic they can beused directly where wildlife is present and then all watertreated can be immediately discharged to the environment. Our process when used in-situ has been proven to removephosphates, ammonias, organics, PCBs and heavy metals.Clearflow has also patented several mechanical processesthat maximize mixing, reaction time and product usage toallow for “turbid” water to be cleaned. Metals, algae, totalsuspended solids, phosphates, ammonias, organics, andPCBs are all reduced to optimum levels. One of thesepatented processes, the PR5 Water Treatment System

Koenders Windmills Inc. manufactures and sells windmillsand associated equipment for the aeration of standingwater. Aeration improves the quality of water by providingan oxygen rich environment and circulating the water, thuspreventing weed growth and removing odours. Ourtraditional market was with the farmers in improving thequality of their dug-out water: more recently we provideaeration to the fish farm industry where aerated water isvital for fish health. We also sell windmills to golf courses, all of whom have “water features” and who previouslyspent large amounts of cash in chemically treating theirponds. Rural Communities are realizing that windmills canoffer a cost effective and environmentally friendly solutionto speedy remediation of their wastewater lagoons.Due to falling water levels, it is becoming more difficult toaccess clean water. Koenders has introduced a range ofsolar powered well water pumps that can pump water fromup to 1,000 feet deep, at a fraction of the cost of atraditional deep water extraction windmill. See ourwebpage at www.koenderswaterpumps.com for moreinformation.
