May 15, 2020, Friday: MAASTRICHT – BANNEUX – COLOGNEThis morning enjoy a guided tour of Maastricht, which is the country’s oldest fortified city, founded by the Romans about 50 B.C. Its name is derived from Latin, “Mosae Trajectum,” meaning “site where the Maas could be crossed.” En-joy time for lunch before we depart for Banneaux where “Our Lady of the Poor” appeared eight times to 11-year-old Mariette Beco. Today, as she did to Mariette, the Virgin of the Poor leads each pilgrim to discover in Jesus the true Life. And then we’re off to Oberammergau! The story of Oberammergau is one of faith and began with a miracle. In the 1600s “The Black Plague” swept through Europe, striking down one in every three people and leaving in its wake, misery, panic and death. The people of Oberammergau prayed to be spared, vowing they would present a play de-picting the Life and Passion of Jesus Christ every 10 years. True to their word, the villagers presented their Passion Play in 1634 and have kept their pledge, the routine of plays only having been interrupted by the two World Wars. Dinner tonight at our hotel.

May 19, 2020, Tuesday: OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAYWe have scheduled this morning at leisure, so you can enjoy and stroll around Oberammergau before the play. There are shops to visit and things to see! Oberammergau is famous for its woodcarvings. We’ll enjoy lunch with our group before the start of the world-renowned Passion Play. During intermission we will have dinner and then return to the theater. Following the play, we transfer to our hotel.

Today, the Wieskirche is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, we pass by Neuschwanstein, one of the fairy-tale castles built by “Mad” King Ludwig II. With its turrets and mock-medievalism the castle is a real fairy-tale fantasy come true (photo stop only). Lunch on your own before our next stop at King Ludwig’s majestic Linderhof Castle one of castles commissioned by King Ludwig II. After our visit we continue to Lucerne, check in at the hotel with time to relax before dinner with our group.

The Cathedral was built from 1633 to 1639 on the foundation of the Roman basilica, which had been burned in 1633. Lucerne was the only major city in Switzerland to reject the reformation and today is the country’s capital of Catholicism. Enjoy a guided tour of Lucerne where we see the well-preserved Old Town with its Chapel & Spreuer Bridges and 14th-century Water Tower. Continue to see the Lion Monument, praised by Mark Twain as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”, the Ba-roque-styled Jesuit Church and the Franciscan Church, perpetually under construction or renovation since its founda-tion in the 13th Century (exterior views only).
