John Cameron, my predecessor, phoned to say how much he and his wife, Corrinne, had been cheered up by the photograph of Liberton Kirk in last Wednesday’s edition of the Scotsman newspaper.

No one who passes by our church building in the month of October can fail to notice the dark red covering of ‘boston ivy’ in its autumn colours. Budding photographers prowl around its grounds, (competing for space with Pokemon-go gamesters), look-ing for the best angle to capture the perfect shot. In the last three years, pictures of the Kirk in all her glory have been posted on several photog-raphy websites, gathering thousands of ‘hits’ from all over the world. Comments have ranged from exclamations of wonder at her beauty, to proud claims to have been baptised or married in her, or simply to live nearby and walk past her each day on the way to work.

My experience of Liberton, how-ever, is that, while she is beautiful from the outside, the beauty is far greater on the inside – and I don’t just mean the building. It was twenty years ago this month that I began my new life as minister here.

I found myself saying that, while at times it

can be very busy, and at times it can be quite stressful, on the whole these past twenty years have been the happiest years of my life.

One of the main reasons for this has been the wonderful sense of community that pervades the place. This is what John Cameron went on to say – how the photo brought back such rich memories of their time here. Whether it is the Kirk or the Kirk Centre, the overall impression I have is one of ‘family’ – a group of individuals who, united by their faith in a loving God, love and care for each other and for the stranger in their midst. This is not to say that we don’t have our issues – what family wouldn’t? But when they arise we try to resolve them with the values of grace and truth that Jesus teaches us.

Reading the many words posted in response to the Autumn photographs of the Kirk, one of the things that make me most sad is the number of people who have merely seen her outer beauty, and so have missed out on what’s to be discovered inside. Maybe you know of someone like that? If so, why don’t you invite them to come in – whether to the Kirk or the Kirk Centre, or one of the many other places where we meet as members of the one family –

the family of God in this place.

Much love

On Friday11th November, which is Armistice Day, the anniversary of the armistice at the end of the First World War, there will be a short time of prayer and reflection in the church at 10.45am, which will include the two minutes silence at 11am. On Remembrance Sunday, 13th November,

will include the Act of Remembrance and the two minutes silence at 11am.

once again be remembering all those who have lost their lives in war, or had their lives blighted by its consequences. The unbelievable slaughter of the Somme – more than a million men were killed or wounded – made it perhaps the bloodiest battle of human history. The incessant bombardment of heavy artillery, the suicidal

waves of attack by unprotected soldiers, the introduction, a few months from its close, of the first tanks in battle all contributed to the vast number of casualties, but so did the pointless efforts of both sides to break what was in fact a five month stalemate. This was a battle nobody won but a million men lost.

This year we shall once again make our prayers for peace and our reflec-tive remembrance against a back-drop of a world that is stubbornly inclined to think that problems can be solved by fighting over them. In the Middle East and in parts of Africa there are still too many who believe that guns and bombs can solve things, when all the evidence of history is that they can’t.

Today, a hundred years after the Battle of the Somme, historians still can’t decide what the Great War was actually about. And the arrival of the Second World War in 1939 tells us that whatever anyone thought it was, five years of sickening killing had not settled it. ‘We will remember them’, we say. Surely the finest remembrance would be a world without violence. It still seems a long way off.

You are invited to join the children in bringing a new toy/gift/voucher to be given to a young person aged between 0 and 16 years who gets very little at Christmas. These gifts will be distributed through Edinburgh Women’s Aid, Saughton Prison Children’s Christmas Gift Scheme, the Salvation Army, and Howdenhall Children’s Centre. Please bring the gift unwrapped but if you care to include wrapping paper that is always appreciated. These organisations are especially looking for gifts and vouchers for teenagers as this is the age group for which they receive the fewest items. Thanks, Linda

I am sorry to record the deaths, within a few weeks of each other, in early October, of John and Isobel Wilson. I send my sympathies to their relatives and friends.

Thanks to all who donated last month. The request this month is for light bulbs, tea and coffee, as well as all the usual household goods. There is always a great demand for pillows (not cushions), so if you have any spare please bring them along to the offering house. If you need to have anything uplifted please contact me. Martin was born in 1579 in Lima, Peru, the son of a former slave. He grew up in poverty and was taken in by a religious order as a servant boy.

The monks looked down on Martin because he was of mixed-race; but in time his behaviour led to the Dominican Order stopping their racial limits on admission and he was made a full brother. He worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor, starting an orphanage and a children's hospital.

During his lifetime he was seen in other places. An African slave said Martin came to comfort him and many others. When the same man later saw him in Peru, he was very happy to meet him again and asked Martin if he had had a good voyage; but Martin had never left Lima.

In pictures, Martin de Porres is shown as a young man with a broom, since he thought all work sacred, no matter how lowly. He is also shown with a dog, cat and mouse, all eating in peace from the one dish.

St Martin de Porres is often shown with mice because, according to one story, the monastery had problems with rodents and decided to put traps out. Martin was so upset that he spoke to the mice and agreed that if they would leave the monastery, he would feed them at the back door of the kitchen. From that day forward, no mouse was seen in the monastery.Which of these animals do you think are actually mentioned by name in the Bible?

We like to know what is going on, what has happened, and what is going to happen. We keep diaries recording what we have done, and in which we write down our plans, engagements, and expectations for the future. The words of Jesus strike at the heart of our expectational lifestyles. There are things we cannot control, forces beyond our power, and certainties of which we are incompetent to truly be sure; yet, through Christ, we submit these in prayer and hope.

This is an advance notice that our annual memorial service will be held on Wednesday 14th December at 7pm. This service is especially for people who find the thought of Christmas celebrations difficult without a loved one who has died, or for those whose memories of long-lost loved ones are particularly sharp at this time of year. Everyone is welcome. There will be a cup of tea or coffee afterwards for anyone who wishes to stay.

Liberton Kirk’s Messy Church celebration of Christmas will be on Saturday 26th November, from 4pm to 6pm in the

church halls. It will be great fun, with Christmassy crafts to make or games to play, a time of worship with great songs and the Christmas story, and a meal together to finish. Messy Church is especially for young families (with children from 0 to P7) who perhaps find Sundays difficult or impossi-

ble. All are welcome, but as usual every adult must have a child, and every child must have an adult! For more information please contact Ruth Davies on 664 3608.(see also page 14 about taking the Nativity into our own homes this Christmas)

There is a Mexican tradition called a “Posada”. Leading up to Christmas, people dressed as characters from the Nativity story visit homes re-enacting the Nativity and sharing the story. In 2000 the Church Army suggested that churches could send a nativity set round homes in their community and more recently the Messy Church headquarters adopted this as part of their “Messy Nativity”.

Liberton Kirk is having a “Posada” this Advent, for Messy Church and other Liberton Kirk families. Each household is invited to make room in their home for a night for the nativity set, and then to deliver it to the next host household the following day (if transport is a problem let us know). People delivering will be invited in to see the new family set up the nativity set and to read them the story, and there will be a little prayer for each host family to say. The family which hosts the nativity set on the night of 23rd December will be asked to bring it to the Christingle Service at 4 o’clock on Christmas Eve and to set it up as part of that service.

I have a rota from 1st December to 23rd December inclusive which I will be starting to fill in on Monday 7th November. I would welcome any offers of families to be hosts from 7th November onwards. Remember you are commit-ting yourselves to being available two evenings in a row, the first to receive the nativity set into your home and the second to deliver it to the next home. I will need your name and address, a contact telephone number, the date you would like, and an email address if you have one (to make it easier for me to contact you if necessary).

I look forward to hearing from you!Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608, or email [email protected]

Once a year we invite anybody who would like to sing to join our four-part choir for the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, which this year is on Wednesday 21st December at 7.30pm. Rehearsals take place on the six preceding Tuesdays, starting on Tuesday 15th

November, from 7.45pm to 9.15pm. The first four rehearsals will be held in the Wilson Hall (upstairs in the Kirk Centre) and the last two in the church. If you would like to try singing in a choir please come along on 15th November and join in – nobody has to audition! Being able to read music is a big help, and if you are a tenor or bass you will be particularly welcome! If you can’t come on the 15th but would like to join the choir the following week please let me know. Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608

John 20 verse 31

The Devotions are but one way to feed on God’s Word in the morning, at midday, in the evening… to pray with Him continually through your dayand even to share with others the treasures or hurdles you discover.

The Church website and Facebook page (even on a handy mobile) provide a fuller daily devotional page. However it all follows the pattern below which

the information overleaf fits into, based on the Kirk’s origins of the Celtic and Northumbrian traditions.
