While that may sound far-fetched, we now know that black bears have been sighted in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula. BLACK BEAR The Times reported last week that the black bear population in that area has increased 29 percent since 2012, according to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The DNR claims that approximately 15,000 to 19,000 black bears, including cubs, roam northern Michigan. Currently, 90 percent live in the Upper Peninsula and the other 10 percent live in the Lower Peninsula, although the population in the Lower Peninsula is increasing. COUGAR We’re not talking about a car or an older woman seeking a relationship with a younger man — we’re talking a big American wild cat. According to the DNR’s Michigan Cougar History, cougars were originally native to Michigan, but were rooted out of the state around the early 1900s. Until recently, the last known wild cougar legally taken in the state occurred in 1906 near Newberry. Periodic sightings have been reported since then, but not conrmed until June of this year. The DNR says it has conrmed the presence of a cougar in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, near the Rose Lake State Wildlife Area in Bath Township by a 21-year-old Haslett man in the early hours of June 21. The man reportedly spotted the cougar in his headlights as it attempted to cross a road. He took a photograph as the cougar turned back from the road into an area of thick vegetation. Where it came from isn’t known, but the DNR says it’s the rst time the large cat species has been veried in lower Michigan. While the chances of encountering a cougar locally is very slim and attacks are extremely rare, if you should encounter one, the DNR recommends that you: • Face the animal and do not act submissive. Stand tall, wave your arms and talk in a loud voice. • Never run from a cougar or other large carnivore. If children are present, pick them up so they cannot run. • If attacked, fight back with whatever is available. Michiganders have spotted bears, a cougar, red foxes and coyotes this yearBy Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 Lions and tigers and bears in Michigan … oh my!

Until recently, the last known wild cougar legally taken in the state occurred in 1906 near Newberry. Periodic sightings have been reported since then, but not confirmed until June of this year. The DNR says it has confirmed the presence of a cougar in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, near the Rose Lake State Wildlife Area in Bath Township by a 21-year-old Haslett man in the early hours of June 21. WILD KINGDOMContinued from Page 1Blocal authorities and the DNR as soon as possible.

RED FOX According to the DNR, red foxes can be found in every county in Michigan but are especially common in areas with fallow and cultivated fields, meadows, bushy fence lines, woody stream borders, and low shrub cover along woods and beaches. They also can be found in suburban and less commonly, urban areas where food is readily available. Foxes are highly mobile, which means they can use a large area to find food and shelter. A bushy-tailed red fox was spotted in the area of Adelaide and South Holly Road in Fenton during the early morning hours of Monday, July 24. It was spotted by 25-year-old Will Hogan of Fenton while on his way to work. He said the bushy red tail and head were a “dead giveaway.” The animal ran away before a photo could be taken. While foxes do not pose a significant risk to humans or pets, there are some tips if you encounter one:• Never approach or touch a fox or other wild animal.• Never feed a fox. This includes eliminating all outside food sources, especially pet foods and bird feeders.• Put garbage in closed containers or only put trash out the morning of pickup day. • Clear out wood and brush piles, which can become a good habitat for small mammals and birds and may attract the animals that prey on them. • Do not allow small pets to roam free when foxes are present. Consider keeping small pets indoors or go outside with them, especially at night.

COYOTE At one time, coyote sightings in the tri-county area were somewhat unusual. But today, more and more people are reporting that they’ve seen a coyote, or heard one howling in the distance. A few days ago, Sandy Smith of Davisburg, owner of Animal Health Clinic, posted this on her Facebook page: “Simply love where I live! Running this a.m. at 6:30 and what do you think zips into the road in front of me? A spectacular female coyote. She was gorgeous! She popped out of the woods, stopped, peaked her ears at me as if to say good morning, and then moved off into woods. What a fantastic start to my day! Love living in the country!” According to the DNR, from a distance, coyotes can be difficult to distinguish from a medium sized German shepherd dog. There is wide variation in the coyote’s color, but generally their upper body is yellowish gray, and the fur covering the throat and belly is white to cream color. The coyote’s ears are pointed and stand erect, unlike the ears of domestic dogs that often droop. People are most likely to see coyotes during their breeding period, which occurs in Michigan from mid January into March. As fall approaches, pups begin dispersing from the den site to establish home ranges of their own. These young dispersing animals sometimes wander into urban areas. Coyotes are active day and night; however, peaks in activity occur at sunrise and sunset. Coyotes generally feed at night. Coyotes rarely attack humans, however, to minimize any potential conflicts with coyotes, follow the same tips provided to keep red foxes away.

At one time, coyotes were an unusual sight in the tri-county area. People have reported sightings more and more often.

TRI-COUNTY TIMES | SUBMITTED PHOTO

While cougar sightings in Michigan are very rare, the DNR did confirm one sighting in June in the Haslett area.

It’s very true that children don’t come with an owner’s manual. But when it comes to parenting, some things “should” be common sense. Here are some examples of “Please don’t do that!”

n This picture speaks for itself. This is undoubt-edly a big joke for the camera, but is it? Notice how flush the baby’s cheeks are. Aren’t Dad’s cheeks a bit flushed after a few brewskis?

n No way! They did not do this! We know it’s difficult to talk with children about sensi-tive topics, but this is downright cruel and unusual.

n Not even on Halloween is this a good idea. Most fathers would not allow this. Most Dads don’t want their little girls to be made up like this when they’re 30, let alone 7 or 8.

n Who didn’t like to lick the beaters after Mom made cookies? But at least she took them out of the unplugged mixer first. This could get ugly, really really ugly.

n This kid must be totally incorrigible if Dad took extreme measures to subdue him with duct tape. Looks like it’s workin’ though, without too much trauma to the boy.

n Why anyone would stick a baby in the microwave oven is beyond compre-hension. To dry a wet diaper or sleeper? To make her stop crying? Just for fun? We can’t figure it out.

Smile, you’re on ‘my lens’ If I were a jogger, which I am not, I think I would want to carry a few ac-cessories with me. I think I would want to wear a fanny pack for runners. Inside that fanny pack, I would carry my cell phone, a small canister of pep-per spray, a couple of dog treats for unexpected encounters, and maybe a very sharp pocket knife that closes so I don’t acci-dentally fall on it. I know most runners want to keep their load as light as possible, but I would con-sider these must-have items for my own safety, if I were a jogger. In light of what happened to Alex-andra “Ally” Brueger one year ago today, these items may not have helped her since she was shot in the back four times, but they may have helped her another time had she lived. I was thinking about body cameras, too, or spy camera glasses. Had Ally been wearing a pair of those, we would have pictures of what happened to her on Fish Lake Road in Rose Township that fateful day.

Although she was running away from the coward that killed her, had she been wearing a body camera or spy glasses, she might have recorded pho-tos of all the vehicles she encountered on her run, any people (potential wit-nesses), anything odd or out of the ordi-nary — and maybe even her killer. OK, by now you’re probably laugh-ing at me, but spy camera glasses are really a thing. They cost anywhere from $50 to $150, depending on accessories. Utilized mainly by private investiga-tors, there are sites that offer a variety of spyware, like camera glasses. Ac-cording to just one of the many I found online, proofpronto.com, “Our VR-6 HD Spy Camera Glasses are sleek, lightweight eyeglasses that record 720p HD video while you wear them. “The front-facing pinhole camera records up to 64 hours of HD video to an 8GB Class-10 MicroSD Card (in-cluded), with 2-hour battery life and quick 1-hour recharge. “Save, delete or upload your videos to any PC or MAC computer. Our HD 720P Spy Camera Glasses feature a long 2-hour battery life and allow the investigator to stay completely covert while recording clear HD video. “Dual record modes allow for full motion record or still snapshots, and record to 8GB internal memory for up to 64 Hours of video storage. Play video back on any PC or Mac, and re-charge with any computer or add a car or wall charger.” These glasses feature realistic, modern frames, with a slim and light-weight design. You even get a clean-ing cloth and glasses case. Perfect! Maybe not, Michigan is one of 13 states that prohibits the use of hidden cameras in certain situations, due to privacy issues. But I don’t believe wearing spy camera glasses to protect myself and record my jog and sur-roundings would be illegal. It’s not like peeking into the men’s locker room or anything. Just the same, I would check to make sure it is legal before buying one. Like I said, I’m not a jogger, but I did grow up watching ‘Get Smart,” and sure would like to have a pair of these camera glasses. She especially enjoyed for more than 25 years an annual week’s golf trip to Crystal Mountain with the Nags and Fillies, eight women friends who played lots of golf, laughed at silly skits, ate whatever they wanted, and never had an argument! SPICY DEVILED EGGSThis recipe from Neal Corman and Chris Peterson’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is fairly spicy

INGREDIENTS:• 8 extra-large eggs• 1/4 cup mayonnaise• 1 teaspoon Creole mustard• 1/4 teaspoon Cholula Hot Sauce• 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon cracked black

pepper• 2 teaspoons finely chopped

pickled jalapeño slices• 1 teaspoon pickled jalapeño

juice• 1/2 Hass avocado, peeled and

pitted• Pinch of smoked paprika• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh

cilantro• 2 ounces dried Spanish chorizo

DIRECTIONS:1. Place the eggs in a medium pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, cover the pot and remove from the heat. Keep covered for 11 minutes, then remove the eggs from the water and place in a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.2. Preheat a sauté pan. Cut the chorizo into very small dice and sauté until crispy. Set aside to cool.3. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, cumin, salt, pepper, jalapeño, and jalapeño juice.4. When the eggs have cooled, carefully crack the shells and peel under cold running water. Slice the eggs lengthwise and remove the yolks, being careful to leave the whites intact.5. Combine the avocado and egg yolks in a small bowl, and mash together with a fork until smooth.6. Add the avocado mixture to the mayonnaise mixture and blend thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into each half of egg white. Dust with the paprika, sprinkle with the cilantro and chorizo, and serve. and can provide a little extra kick at your next picnic. Serves 4 to 6.
