Loving the downtown It has been exciting, as a Fenton resident, to watch as our downtown flourishes. I know there are many people who wish they could go back to the days before Urban Renewal. When I see the old photos, my first reaction, too, is ‘what a shame!’ But, those days are gone and the ‘old downtown’ is not coming back — at least not the way it was. What we have now is beau-tiful, with new restaurants and businesses, and all the flowers and sculptures. Well, some of the sculp-tures anyway. I love the cats sculpture behind Fenton City Hall, but the jury is out on that thing in front of the Post Office. I’m not sure what that is and I am not fond of that color. But as I’m often told, art is ‘subjective,’ and other people probably like it. Anyway, now that summer is upon us, with the Concerts in the Park starting up again and soon the Farmers Markets, the downtown is going to be bustling with residents and visitors. And that’s a good thing for all the shops and restaurants down there. Even without those events, I see more people downtown now than I ever have. What I am really excited about is the new building about to go up at the corner

of N. LeRoy Street and Silver Lake Road — The Horizon Building. The owners are currently seeking tenants or buyers for the first floor and are open to suggestions. So, of course, I will have to share my ideas. First, let’s rule out another pizza place. We have more than enough fine pizza places in Fenton and the surrounding areas. Let’s also rule out a doughnut shop. With CRUST and Tim Hortons within walking distance of The Horizon Building, another bakery-type store is not really necessary. Having said that, a deli/butcher shop would be perfect. One with a variety of lunchmeats and cheeses, with more types than is available at local grocery stores. Put a few tables in there for the lunchtime crowd. We have many fine restaurants downtown, but sometimes people (like me) just want to grab a quick sandwich. For those who just want to pick up some meats, they can do that before heading over to CRUST for a variety of bread choices. What I really, really want though is a good, old-fashioned bar. Not a restaurant with a bar in it, just a bar that serves drinks and maybe a few snacks. And I don’t want a TV in my bar. I want a small comedy club and a little dance floor. Imagine that — no sports, no news of violence going on at home and in the world, no stupid reality shows — just good times with friends and laughter. But, whatever goes in there, I have faith in the people putting the whole project together and know it will be something fabulous. Coincidentally, one of the most popular places for drinks, The Relief & Resource Co., already has deals on martinis on Mondays, according to head bartender and co-owner Jon Foley.

The word “mar-tini” has a different definition depending on if you ask a bartender or not. “I define that term far more strictly than most people who work in bars,” Foley said. He said a lot of people define a martini as any drink that comes in a martini glass, but it’s actu-ally a specific drink consisting of gin, vermouth, and some type of garnish, usually an olive or lemon zest. The drink is either salty or has a hint of citrus. Foley prefers his with lemon zest. Martinis in movies are often shown in the hand of a gorgeous, wealthy woman drinking a mar-tini in an elegant bathrobe with fake fur. They’re regu-larly consumed at bars and at home. Today, half of all cocktails are served in a martini glass, according to punchbowl.com. The Relief & Resource Co. has a special on tradi-tional martinis for $6 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. “For two ingredients, that garnish is kind of important. It adds flavor,” he said. They have an industry special on Monday, meaning people who work in the same business get a deal on marti-nis. “They like gin,” he said. Tanqueray is popular at The Relief & Resource Co., which is dry gin. Foley said they’re fond of Botanist, a gin that’s made in Scotland with 22

different botanicals. Foley said the martini was invented sometime in the 1870s or 80s. “There’s debate over when it was exactly invited, but it coincided with when vermouth hit America,” he said. “Traditionally, the French are the ones who make dry vermouth. Italians are known for sweet vermouth.” The first printed recipe for a “Mar-tinez” cocktail was in a bartending manual published in San Francisco in 1887. Although, many believe the

drink was developed on the East Coast. In 1911, Martini di Arma di Taggia, a bartender in New York

City, served drinks that consisted of gin, ver-

mouth, orange bitters and an olive garnish. It gained

popularity among drinkers, partiers, and the high class.

The most expensive martini costs over $60,000. It was cre-

ated in a Scottish distillery. The martini glass, with the thin neck and wide-opening saucer, was invented before the actual drink. Bartenders used the martini glass for many other drinks and was popular during the Prohibi-

tion. “The problem with the history of cocktails is that people who were

deciding the history of cocktails were drinking,” Foley said. Those people never let a lie get in the way of a good story. Cocktail his-tory is about 50 per-cent true story and 50 percent BS.” Some martini-l o v i n g n o t a b l e people and literary icons include John

D. Rockefeller, Humphrey Bogart, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, E.B. White, William Churchill, Dor-othy Parker, and James Bond. “I encourage people to try the original gin martini, not only the fruity drinks that come in the glasses. There’s something to be said for the classic cocktail that’s been around for 145 years. It’s still around for a reason,” he said.

Janice Jo “Jan” Barker Detrich 1949-2017 Janice Jo “Jan” Barker Detrich - age 67, passed away on June 9, 2017 at the Hospice of The Chesapeake in Pasadena, MD of an unanticipated brief illness. Jan had recently relocated to Maryland to live with her daughter Jessica, granddaughter Lily Belle, partner Kevin Goedecke and his children, Lexi, Bubba and Trey. Jan graduated from Fenton High School and attended Central Michigan University. Jan’s work as an intuitive astrologer, teacher and counselor spanned the globe. Wherever Jan lived during her lifetime, from her childhood in Fenton to all of the states and global travels, including a teaching sabbatical in New Zealand, through her counseling, workshops and astrology practice, she has guided thousands along their life’s journey. She will be missed by her many friends and family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lila (Steele) Barker. She is survived by her father, Dale M. Barker; daughter, Jessica; granddaughter, Lily Belle; brothers, Stephen Barker (Kristina), Dan Barker (Ann) and many nieces, a nephew, grandnieces, grandnephew and other extended family. A memorial service for Jan will be held in Fenton at a later date to be determined, and will be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of The Chesapeake, 90 Richie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122.
