nAnnual Renaissance Festival fun for all By Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 Repeat visitors to the annual Michi-gan Renaissance Festival in the shire of Hollygrove know well that there are hundreds of people dressed in period costumes milling about the fair all day on weekends during the season. It’s a misconception, however, that they’re just hanging out at the tavern drinking ale. There is much more to these folks who call themselves not patrons, but “play-trons.” At least that’s what the people who work there, known as “rennies,” call them. What is likely the one thing peo-ple don’t know about playtrons, who come from all over the country for the festival, is that they volunteer their time at the festival and conduct many charitable fundraisers. One is the “Rennie Rescue,” in which money is collected for the Renaissance Festival workers to pay for medical expenses and other bills. “Many of them don’t have insurance,” said Tracy Nussle of Linden. Another charity fundraiser is called “Drench a Wench,” where people pay to throw a wet sponge at a wench. The pro-ceeds go toward breast cancer research. Nussle, 53, Sherry Smith, 50, of Holly, and Nussle’s son, Chad Worden, 33, of Grand Blanc are among the hundreds of playtrons who look forward to playing the part at each year’s festival in Holly. Nussle has been attending for 15 years. Her son has been going for 20 years and

They say they do it for the camaraderie and stress relief. (Bottom right) Sherry Smith, left, and Tracy Anderson-Casner are among the many playtrons who became friends at the Renaissance Festival.

Smith for approximately eight years. “At least 75 percent of the attendees who come through the gates are play-trons,” said Worden. The three belong to the many different groups that make up the playtron culture.
Nussle, for example, belongs to three different pirate groups, all of which have their own ships, crew and officers. There are about 10 to 15 different ships of pirates at the Michigan Renaissance Festival.

LOOKINGBACK at this week
IN LOCAL HISTORY
COMPILED BY VERA HOGAN
5 years …Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010Survey: More restaurants, taverns hurt by smoking ban. The Michigan Res-taurant Association (MRA) released results of its first survey on the impact of the smoking ban in restaurants and taverns. Establishments have been more than 2.5 times more likely to experience a decrease in sales than to have experienced increased sales. Survey results show 42.2 percent state their sales are down since the ban was enacted.
10 years … Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005Trial begins for man accused of stran-gling wife. Robert Thomas Parks, 32, sat quietly in court Tuesday as Genesee County Assistant Prosecutor Mark Beckman told jurors that Parks was a man that kept his pimp hand strong, and one who wanted sex anywhere, with anyone at any time. Parks is on trial for allegedly strangling his wife, Jessica Andrews Parks, to death the night of Sept. 3, 2004. Their 2-year-old son was in the apartment.
15 years …Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000Administration building for sale. Linden Community Schools Board of Educa-tion housed in the historic administra-tion building downtown is for sale. School officials will be looking at bids of parties interested in the purchase of the administration and the 10.9 acres on which it stands on Bridge Street, near Broard.
20 years …Sunday, Aug. 20, 1995Michigan Bean Building to be trans-formed into antiques mall. A Fenton landmark will be back in business. The 130-year-old Michigan Building, located at the corner of LeRoy and Main Street along the Grand Trunk Western railroad tracks, was sold to Joan Cock-erton of Grand Blanc. She plans to turn the building into an antiques mall with luncheon service.
25 years …Sunday, Aug. 19, 1990A big show! Pro-millage forces all out for LF forum. The big event was com-plete with cheerleaders, posters and television cameras. Supporters of the home team were fired up for a victory, but a small group of dissenters seemed bent on spoiling the fun. It may sound a lot like a high school football game, but the big event was a public forum to hear pros and cons of a 37.06 mill proposal on the Aug. 30 Lake Fenton millage election.
30 years …Sunday, Aug. 18, 1985Warren shot to death. Prominent de-veloper’s wife held for questioning by police. Prominent Flint developer David Nelson Warren, 39, was shot to death early Wednesday morning in his home on Moffett Drive in Fenton Town-ship. It was ruled as a domestic-related incident by homicide detectives from the Flint State Police Post. Warren’s 31-year-old wife was held for question-ing but not arrested. Police sources said those who investigated the shoot-ing believed it was an accident.

RENAISSANCEContinued from Page 1B Nussle even has her own pirate name that she uses during the Ren Fest — “One Boot Tracy.” The story behind the name is that she is on a ship with mostly men. Showing she is just as tough as they are, she kicked them in the rear, resulting in the loss of one of her boots. Hence the name. The three say there are many different groups of playtrons at the festival. They include Vikings, Bulgarians, Washing Well Wenches, Scottish clans, Rogues Guild, elves and fairies and some who dress in only fur. The Washing Well Wenches are among the entertainment. Why do they do it? According to Nussle, who is a retired criti-cal care registered nurse, she does it for the camaraderie and it’s a great stress reliever. “Have you ever been in a crowd and felt like you didn’t belong,” Nussle asked. “It’s not
like that at the festival. No one is judgmental, you feel as though you belong.” Smith said she has made some of her best friends there. “Where can you go play dress up and not feel like an idiot,” she asked. The friends from the Renaissance Festival get together other times of the year. “Once a month we have the opportunity to get together at other venues, like Frankenfest in Frankenmuth, for example,” said Smith. Nussle and Worden slide into the English accents when they’re at Hollygrove. Smith does not. Nussle performs impromptu skits on the grounds, like the “Let me guess your name” skit, where she keeps shouting out a name until someone says, “that’s me.” Most of the playtrons make their own pe-riod clothing. Some purchase the outfits and accessories online and others like to trade. “There is a lot of horse-trading,” said Worden. Nussle said the playtrons are made up of many professional people. “We have nurses, attorneys and many teachers,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun but it’s also very expensive. You have to have some money to do this.” Because of the complexity of the period costumes, especially for the ladies, it is nearly impossible to drive a vehicle, said Nussle. “We bring our costumes to the festival park-ing lot and help each other get dressed for the day.” Worden said many of the men are involved in leatherwork and make many of the belts and pouches. “Pouches are critical,” he said. “The costumes we wear do not have pockets.” Renaissance fairs around the country have specific rules. According to Worden, “In Colorado, they have modesty rules and tattoos are not allowed. “The festival in Tennessee doesn’t allow cleavage.” Many people meet their mates at the Renaissance Festival, which even hosts weddings. “Where else can you get married in a castle?” asked Worden.

Marty, this problem is most commonly caused by a restricted heater core. A good flushing should fix it. To check this when the car is warm
and idling; feel both heater hoses. If one is considerably cooler than the other than you have most likely found your problem. Other things to look for are proper coolant level and circulation. If you need to flush the cooling system and heater core, do so by first draining as much of your old coolant as possible, then take off both heater hoses and flush the heater core back and forth from one hose to the other. You should see when the debris comes out and the water should flow free and clear. Next flush the radiator and block from the other end of the heater hose where they hook to the engine and also from your upper and lower radiator hoses in both directions on all hoses. When finished drain as much water out as you can and start by filling the system with straight antifreeze for the first gallon. Then use a 50/50 mix and make sure to bleed the system. On this car, I leave the top heater hose off while filing. Use a small funnel into the heater hose and fill until it comes out the heater pipe at the engine, then reconnect the hose, top off the system and run until hot. Now after it cools down again you will need to check for the proper coolant water mix with an antifreeze tester. It should be good to -34. If not, you may need to adjust this by draining some out then adding more coolant or water to adjust the mix. Don’t forget to take your old coolant to a parts store or repair shop that accepts it for recycling purposes as this should not be put down the drain or left outside. Pets seem to like drinking it and it is poison!

Q: I have a 2009 impala and the heater will not stay hot when the car is
idling. When I touch the accelerator pedal it gets hot almost instant. It makes it very hard to melt ice on the windshield.

While the iPhone allows you to take amazing pho-tos with a simple tap of the screen, there are a whole range of accessories available to enhance your shoot-ing experience. As you become more serious about your iPhone photography, you may want to add a few of these tools to your collection.
A tripod is arguably the single most important accessory that you can own as a photographer – mobile or otherwise. A tripod is essential for long exposures and for self-portraits.
While you can certainly make use of your iPhone camera’s self-timer to give yourself time to get into the shot for self portraits, or to mini-mize camera shake during long exposures, an even more effective method involves a remote shutter release.
A great way to bridge the gap be-tween mobile photography and DSLR photography is to use one or more of the many great exter-nal, add-on lenses that are avail-able.
In low-light situations, the iPhone’s built-in flash can work in a pinch. However, most of us have expe-rienced its limitations firsthand – typically harsh light, lack of power adjustment, etc.
If you do plan to do a lot of shoot-ing over a short period of time, car-rying an external storage device with you may be a worthy invest-ment. These are typically flash-based memory drives (meaning no moving parts) that you can up-load your photos to in order to free up memory on your iPhone.

Photography Accessories
If you don’t have easy access to AC power to recharge your iPhone, you may also wish to con-sider a DC power option, which you can carry with you at all times for on-the-go charging.
Free of frivolous distractions and interface clutter, VSCO Cam is a stills-only app built with composition and edit-ing in mind. The app allows you to set the focus and ex-posure independently, as well as make subtle adjust-ments to temperature, con-trast, brightness, saturation, and more using a variety of tools. You can even ad-just the strength presets, or peruse a curated gallery of impressive photos from the creators.

When it comes to photo editing software, nobody does it bet-ter than Adobe. Though mo-bile version of their renowned desktop software offers a smaller work space and runs pricier than most apps, it’s still one of the most capable after-effects programs you can buy. Popular Photoshop features such as layers, selection tools, and adjustments all make an appearance, as do options for adding text, applying effects, and blending images.
ProHDR is probably one of the most full-featured apps we’ve encountered in the HDR cat-egory. The interface isn’t quite as slick as VividHDR, but it of-fers you a wider range of con-trol over exposure adjustments and tone-mapping settings. It also has an array of beatiful preset filters for you to use, if you’re into that sort of thing, along with options for digitally zooming, cropping, setting a self timer, adding a simple grid overlay, and captioning your photos.

Four sets of slender posts support the front edge of the Bailey’s roof, creating an inviting full-width porch. These features, plus the multipaned upper window sashes, give a Crafts-man-style flavor to this compact contemporary two-story plan. The front facade is so symmetri-cal that an old-fashioned porch swing could be hung at either end. Family gathering spaces are on the first floor and bed-rooms are upstairs.

Harry John “Jack” Edwards 1944-2015Harry John “Jack” Edwards – age 71, of Fenton, born July 7, 1944 passed away peacefully at home of natural causes on August 9, 2015. Harry retired from GM Metal Fab Flint in 2006 with 42 years as a skilled pipefit-ter and member of UAW Local 659. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve for 8

DEAR AMY: Over a year ago, my brother and I got into an argument over politics and we both said some things we should not have said. I had purchased tickets to see a band with him for his birthday but did not want to go with him. I dropped the tickets off at his house with a note saying I no longer wanted to go. A year has passed and I feel bad about the way I handled this situation. I recently reached out to reconcile but have not received a response. I wrote an apology and followed up indicating life was too short to be angry for too long and that I was sorry for what I said — but I have not had any response. Should I just leave this alone now and wait, or should I continue to try and reconcile? I want to get back to the way it
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 85 and in good health, except for dizzy spells. It was said that I have vertigo, but I do not believe this to be the case. Meclizine is of no help. The symptoms are worse when I close my eyes. When I do, I feel like I may fall. Other symptoms are shuffling of feet, dizziness and dizziness on standing too quickly. Is it possible I have Meniere’s disease? — A.T.H.
ANSWER: “Dizziness” is a very nonspecific term. It can mean vertigo, which is a sensation of movement when there isn’t any; lightheadedness,
such as we can all get sometimes when standing too quickly; or a disorientation that can happen when blood sugar is low. Meniere’s disease is a cause of
true vertigo, often with ringing in the ears and hearing loss. Shuffling of the feet is a red flag for Parkinson’s disease. Dizziness is a common if not universal symptom in people with Parkinson’s. However, only a thorough history and physical exam can make the diagnosis. If your regular doctor hasn’t been able to help, you might see a neurologist, who is
an expert in making diagnoses about neurologic symptoms such as dizziness. There are many possible causes.

was but I’m not sure if he is willing. — Brotherly Problems
DEAR BROTHERLY:The key ingredients in reconciliation are: Fully acknowledging your own behavior (without justifying or rehashing the elements that drove you to it), saying you are sorry and asking for forgiveness. If you have done these things, be patient. Then contact your brother casually — by phone or text — and ask him to hang with you. If there is an errand you can
run, or a task you can perform (perhaps for another family member), ask him if he wants to join you. Sometimes it’s a little easier to ease back into a relationship through a shared activity.
