1 GENERAL
1.1 REQUIREMENTS INCLUDED
.1 Furnish all labour, material, equipment and services for complete supply and installation of
waterproof traffic deck coating, as indicated on the drawings and as specified herein.
.2 The work of this section shall include completion of waterproof traffic deck coating to surfaces of
suspended floor slabs of traffic aisles, interior ramps, parking stalls, garages and other areas as
scheduled at Parking Levels P3, P2 and P1, including but not necessarily limited to the following:
.1 Preparation of concrete surfaces to receive deck coating.
.2 Treating all cracks and construction joints; cold pour joints, and edge joints as may be
deemed necessary, after inspection of concrete substrate, prior to application of deck
coating system.
.3 Supply and application of deck coating, including primer, elastomeric waterproof
membrane, and wear surfacing course.
.4 Supply and application of sealant and double application of membrane at junction of deck
coating system and vertical surfaces.

1.3 LEED® CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
.1 This Project has been registered under LEED® Canada – CS 2009 with a goal of LEED®
Gold. Refer to Section 01 35 18 - LEED® Requirements and Procedures, the LEED® Rating
System, and the LEED® Canada Reference Guide for Core & Shell Development 2009.
.2 In order to achieve LEED® Gold Certification for the Project, the Contractor and all
Subcontractors, suppliers and manufacturers shall comply with all requirements as
specified in Section 01 35 18 - LEED® Requirements and Procedures, and they shall be
fully aware of all required laws and available strategies to achieve the maximum credits,
including any applicable exemplary performance levels, for the following:

.6 Construction Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) management.
.7 VOC/Low-Emitting Materials Compliance.
.3 This Project has an appointed Project LEED® Consultant who shall provide the overall
strategies for the LEED® certification program. All queries regarding all general LEED®
activities, document submissions, site procedures and proposed strategies pertaining to
the achievement of LEED® certification should be directed to the Project LEED®
Consultant.
.4 The Contractor shall immediately appoint a Contractor LEED® Coordinator to oversee all
daily on-site activities and submission procedures and documentation pertaining to the
LEED® certification program. The Contractor LEED® Coordinator shall liaise directly with,
and provide up-to-date monthly progress reports at month end to, the Project LEED®
Consultant throughout the Project.
.5 After award of contract, each Subcontractor shall immediately appoint a Subcontractor
LEED® Coordinator to liaise with the Contractor LEED® Coordinator throughout the
Project.
.6 After award of contract, Subcontractors shall attend a LEED® orientation meeting with
their selected Subcontractor LEED® Coordinator, in accordance with Section 01 35 18 -
LEED® Requirements and Procedures.
.7 After award of contract, all Subcontractors shall submit to the Contractor LEED®
Coordinator all LEED Submittals Checklists, including all information, data and MSDS on
materials and products included in their bid with respect to recycled content, regional
materials, and indoor air quality in accordance with Section 01 35 18 - LEED®
Requirements and Procedures.
.8 The Contractor LEED® Coordinator must confirm that the Subcontractor’s submissions
are complete and verified prior to the Subcontractor’s first progress draw application, and
any subsequent progress draws, as required.
.9 Refer to Section 01 74 20 –Waste Management and Disposal for product waste recyclability
requirements.
.10 The project scorecard outlines targeted credit thresholds. Please note that the scorecard
is subject to change throughout project development and construction, and will be
updated as necessary. Updates will be communicated by the Project LEED® Consultant to
the Contractor LEED® Coordinator, and the Contractor LEED® Coordinator will ensure all
Subcontractors and other related parties are also immediately aware of the updates.

1.4 REFERENCE STANDARDS
.1 B.C. Building Code 2006.
.2 CAN/CSA-S413-07 – Parking Structures.
.3 ASTM C957-06 – Standard specification for high-solids content, cold liquid-applied elastomeric
waterproofing membrane with integral wearing surface.
.4 ASTM D4541-09 – Standard Method for Pull-Off Strength of Coatings Using Portable Adhesion
Testers.
.5 WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
.6 Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS).
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
.1 All materials used in this section shall be of the highest quality as manufactured by nationally
recognized manufacturers and of the type specified.
.2 All deck coating work shall be carried out by a specialist applicator, trained and licensed by the
coating manufacturer, who can substantiate with documented evidence, successful installation of
similar area deck coating system prior to award of this Subcontract. Such evidence and
manufacturer's statement of approval shall be submitted to the Consultant, when requested.
.3 Provide for a technical representative from the traffic deck coating manufacturer to be on the job
site to assure compliance with the manufacturer's directions. The technical representative shall
be present when the coating application starts and shall make periodic inspections, during the
application. The technical representative shall confirm such inspections have been made by
submitting written reports to the Consultant on the coating application and percentage completion.
(Refer also to clause 1.11.)
.4 On completion of the coating application the manufacturer's technical representative shall certify
in writing to the Consultant that the coating system has been installed in accordance with
manufacturer' s printed directions.
1.6 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
.1 Waterproof traffic deck coating shall meet or exceed the following requirements:
.1 Traffic deck coating materials shall conform to CSA-S413 – Parking Structure with
membrane system to pass ASTM C957 for abrasion resistance crack bridging, elongation
recovery and chemical resistance.
.2 Traffic deck coating shall be installed to comply with B.C. Building Code, WorkSafe BC
regulations and WHMIS requirements.
.3 The system shall prevent corrosive effects of de-icing salts and the wearing surface shall
be resistant to abrasion due to vehicular traffic.

1.6 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (Continued)
.4 The system shall be tear resistant and chemical resistant to spillage of oil, gasoline, anti-
freeze, battery acid, alkalis and salt water.
.5 Any areas of the traffic deck coating exposed to sunlight shall have a U.V. resistant wear
course.
.6 The system shall be totally waterproof, flexible and thermally compatible with the
substrate under applicable service conditions.
.7 The system shall not allow moisture penetration at construction joints, termination points,
drains, upturns or splices.
.8 The system shall remain skid resistant and non-slip under its intended use during wet,
snow, or dry conditions.
.9 The system shall withstand active cyclical crack movements to a maximum of 1/16” and
remain waterproof.
.10 The coating adhesion to the concrete shall meet or exceed 1.0 MPa.
.11 Adhesion of all layers of the system to each other shall meet or exceed 1.0 MPa.
.12 The system shall not debond, crack or wear excessively. Loss of aggregate in any area
will constitute failure.
.13 The system shall not support combustion.
.2 The traffic deck coating system shall satisfy the above requirements for the duration of the
specified warranty.
1.7 SUBMITTALS
.1 On the Consultant's request, samples of materials shall be submitted for approval, prior to
commencing work on the site.
.2 Submit to the Consultant two (2) samples, minimum 12” x 12” in size that are representative of
finished work in colour selected by the Consultant and indicating proposed surface finish and total
material thicknesses for the coating, including membrane and exposures, as specified herein.
.3 Submit to the Consultant the coating manufacturer's product literature indicating product
information correlated to the specified requirements.
.4 Prior to commencing work, submit a certified statement to the Consultant, issued by the
applicator, attesting that all surfaces have been inspected and found satisfactory to receive the
coating.

1.7 SUBMITTALS (Continued)
.5 Submit inspection reports and certification of proper application as specified under clause 1.5.3
and 1.5.4.
.6 Submit also to the Consultant at completion of installation four (4) sets of recommended
maintenance instructions for the waterproof traffic deck coating, for use by the Owner's
maintenance staff. Include manufacturer's, and applicator's name, address, telephone and fax
numbers.
1.8 MOCK-UPS
.1 Install on the site as part of the work, in areas designated by the Consultant two (2) sample areas
(minimum 100 sq.ft.) of waterproof traffic deck coating to be applied at parking stalls and at traffic
aisles for approval by the Consultant and to set standard of qualify for remainder of the work.
.2 Do not commence remainder of the coating application until mock-up areas have been approved
by the Consultant.
.3 Approved mock-up areas shall remain as finished part of the work.
1.9 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
.1 Deliver and store all materials in their original packaging in undamaged, sealed with labels intact,
having manufacturer's name, brand, weight, CSA and other references to accept standards
clearly shown.
.2 Make all necessary arrangements with regard to delivery and storage on the site with the
Contractor and schedule deliveries accordingly. In general, deliver material as required for
installation and keep site storage to a minimum.
.3 Provide all plant and equipment necessary for off-loading of materials to complete the work of this
Section.
.4 Protect materials from damage, weather and store in a dry place.
.5 Handle materials and equipment in strict accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and
WHMIS regulations and Data Safety sheets. Damaged or deteriorated materials shall be
removed from the site.
1.10 JOB CONDITIONS
.1 Conform to deck coating manufacturer's requirements for minimum application temperatures and
humidity. Check surfaces and areas specified and shown to receive deck coating. Ensure
environmental and site conditions are suitable for application. Inspect surfaces for acceptability of
level, texture, moisture content, etc.
.2 Report any unsatisfactory conditions and/or surfaces to receive deck coating to the Contractor in
writing. Starting work shall imply acceptance of surfaces and conditions.

.3 Take all necessary measurements and levels at the building. The work shall be laid out to
accurately fit the conditions at the building and with all adjacent work.
.4 Notify the Contractor and the Consultant of any variations beyond the accepted tolerances in the
substrate or in the adjacent work.
1.11 INSPECTION AND TESTING
.1 An independent inspection company will be appointed by the Owner to carry out inspection and
testing of waterproof traffic deck coating installations. The cost of this inspection will be borne by
the Owner and shall not be included in this section. Refer to clause 3.4 Field Quality Control.
.2 Upon completion of the work, notify the Consultant and the Contractor in writing that the
installation has been inspected and approved by the inspection company and the manufacturer's
representative. (See clause 1.5.3 and 1.5.4.)
1.12 WARRANTY
.1 Submit a warranty by the traffic deck coating manufacturer, in writing, in the name of the Owner,
that waterproof traffic deck coating furnished and installed under this contract shall remain fully
watertight and that the wearing surface shall remain free from all defects for a period of five (5)
years from the date of Substantial Performance of the Work.
.2 This written warranty shall cover the faithful performance of the waterproof traffic deck coating
system, including immediate correction, at no expense to the Owner and at such time as the
Owner may designate, of any defects as listed under clause 1.6 herein, due to faulty materials or
workmanship appearing within five (5) years from the date of Substantial Performance of the
Work.
2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
.1 Waterproof Traffic Deck Coating (WTD): Shall be two (2) component low odor/low VOC
polyurethane system designed for use on vehicular traffic decks and conforming to CAN/CSA
S413. The full system shall meet or exceed performance criteria specified under clause 1.6 to
provide a complete waterproof traffic deck membrane and which will prevent corrosive effects of
de-icing salts.
Notwithstanding the following manufacturers and systems are approved for this project all
listed systems must meet or exceed the performance criteria specified and shall provide
the minimum thicknesses specified herein under clauses 3.3.7 and 3.3.9.

- Tremco Vulkem 950NF/951NF Traffic Deck Coating System.
- Neogard Auto-Gard FC Traffic Deck Coating System
- Pacific Polymers ElastoDeck 6500 VT Traffic Deck Coating
- Sonneborn Conifur 11Traffic Deck Coating System
- Duochem Duodeck Traffic Topping System
or approved equivalent
.3 Primer, membrane sealants, wearing course aggregate, and other associated materials: Shall be
as supplied by the manufacturers for the deck coating systems specified.
.4 Colour: Colour of wear surfacing shall be as selected by the Consultant from standard range.
.5 Surface Patching: Products used to patch rough surfaces shall be 100% solids epoxy and shall
contain no additives or fillers in resin. Coating material may be used to fill rough areas if approved
by manufacturer.
.6 Location: as scheduled.
3 EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
.1 Prepare all surfaces to receive deck coating, including substrate joints, cracks, coves, vents
pipes, etc. in accordance with manufacturer's printed directions.
.2 Ensure that all substrate surfaces are smooth, dry and firm. Remove any frost, ice, loose
particles, ridges, cracks, grease, oil and other foreign matter which could prevent adhesion of the
deck coating to the substrate.
.3 Before application of coating carry out moisture of concrete slabs to ensure moisture content does
not exceed coating manufacturer’s recommendations.
.4 Ensure that concrete surfaces are free from surface pitting and honey-combing. Remove fins,
rough projections and any other irregularities which could puncture the membrane. Fill voids,
surface pitting and honeycombing. Repair pour joints and provide a surface satisfactory for
application of deck coating in accordance with coating manufacturer's directions.
.5 Prepare concrete deck surfaces to receive deck coating by steel shot blasting or other means
approved by the coating manufacturer. At surfaces which cannot be shot blasted i.e. slab edges
or upturns, sandblast such surfaces.
.6 Clean all exposed metal surfaces (pipes, sleeves, drains, vents, etc.). Remove paint, rust, scale
or any other foreign matter.
.7 Ensure that drainage slopes by others are complete prior to placing of deck coating.

3.2 PROTECTION
.1 Protect all personnel or Consultants who may be in the area during application of coating
by providing mechanical ventilation and respirators and posting warning signs as
required, all to WorkSafe BC regulations and WHMIS requirements.
.2 Advise the Contractor and trades of fixtures, fittings and finishing, not to be installed until deck
coating is completed.
.3 Protect adjacent surfaces from drainage resulting from work of this trade. If necessary, mask
and/or cover adjacent surfaces, fixtures, equipment, etc. by suitable means.
.4 Provide traffic control to ensure no trades in areas during application and until surface has cured.
Provide protection after cure, against damage by other trades working over the deck coating.
.5 Apply temporary protection on completed deck coating as required.
3.3 APPLICATION
.1 Complete all work to manufacturer's printed directions.
.2 Carry out all applications to comply with CSA S413-07, B.C. Building Code, WorkSafe BC and
WHMIS applicable regulations.
.3 Rout 1/2” wide and 1/2” deep all movement cracks and joints and caulk with an approved two (2)
part urethane sealant.
.4 Fill static cracks with sand filled epoxy mortar, and span with a stretch coat of membrane and flex
tape approximately 4” and having a minimum dry thickness of 30 mils.
.5 Prime the entire concrete surfaces per manufacturer's printed directions.
.6 Provide 3/4” cove bead at intersection of horizontal and vertical surfaces utilizing an approved two
(2) part urethane sealant and apply double application of membrane.
.7 Apply elastomeric membrane to total minimum dry thickness of 30 mils. Apply as per
manufacturer's application directions. Carry membrane up to height of 4” from the floor on curbs,
walls, columns and other vertical surfaces.
.8 Apply wear course surfacing and manufacturer approved aggregate loading (i.e. sized, washed,
dried and bagged, having a minimum hardness of six (6) on the Moh Scale). Aggregate loading
to be not less than that recommended by the coating manufacturer.
.9 Apply wear surfacing and aggregate loadings as a total system according to following exposure
codes and minimum nominal thickness.
.1 Exposure 1: Parking stalls - apply wear course surfacing to total minimum dry film
thickness of not less than 20 mils or as recommended by the coating
manufacturer to conform to performance criteria specified.

3.3 APPLICATION (Continued)
.2 Exposure 2: Traffic aisles, turning areas and ramps - apply wear course surfacing to a
total minimum dry film thickness of not less than 25 mils, or as
recommended by the coating manufacturer to conform to performance
criteria specified.
.10 Install pipe seals and flashing protrusions in membrane in accordance with manufacturer's details
and written directions. Ensure that coating terminations are completed in accordance with
manufacturer's details and printed directions.
.11 Finished work shall match approved samples and approved mock-up areas, be uniform in
thickness, sheen, colour and texture and be free from defects detrimental to appearance or
performance with no variations in light reflection, surface roughness, or ridging in sloped areas.
Profiles shall be such that flow to drains is not impeded.
.12 Material quantities and placement procedures are to be strictly monitored. Perimeters of areas to
receive a typical material batch or container volume are to be clearly marked prior to application to
ensure uniform thickness of materials.
.13 Ensure environmental and site conditions as recommended by the coating manufacturer, are
suitable for installation of work of this section.
.14 Wearcourse aggregate type, size and distribution shall be in strict conformance with
manufacturer’s requirements.
3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
.1 Carry out cut tests to applied traffic deck coating to ensure specified dry film thickness of deck
coating membrane and wear surfacing have been met. Testing of cut tests will be done by the
appointed testing agency. (Refer to clause 1.11).
.2 Perform cut tests in presence of Consultant and inspection agency providing this does not disrupt
the installation cycle. (Refer to clause 1.11).
.3 Repair to approval of the Consultant, all cuts and replace all patches taken for inspection and
testing purposes.
.4 To confirm wearcourse thickness and to evaluate bonding of coating to substrate, and/or coating
to wearcourse, adhesion tests shall be performed. Number of test shall be based on one (1) test
to be done at drive aisle and one (1) test at parking stall. Adhesion of the coating layers to each
other and to the concrete substrate shall exceed 1.0 MPa. The average of all tests must exceed
1.0 MPa with no test less than 0.90 MPa.
.5 Additional tests may be performed by the testing agency at the discretion of the Consultant to
confirm in-situ material thickness and bond.

3.5 ADJUST AND CLEAN
.1 Repair, remove and clean any drips or smears on exposed finished surfaces to subsequently
finished. Clean off immediately as directed by and to the satisfaction of the Consultant.
.2 Protect all adjacent surfaces from damage due to deck coating operations.
.3 As work proceeds and on completion, clean up and remove from the premises all rubbish and
surplus materials resulting from this work.
