W e are pleased to share “Connection to Coun-

try” Mosaic Art Work which will be unveiled

during the National Aboriginal and Islander Day

Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week celebrations on the

14th of July on our school grounds.

After taking the secondary student leadership team to the

Islamic Museum at the beginning of the term where they

learnt about the Afghani cameleers, the positive interaction

they had with the Aboriginal community and their contribu-

tion to the wider community, we decided to do a follow

up project to bring awareness about this topic on school

grounds involving students and the community. Hence, we

will be celebrating the NAIDOC week on a wider scale with

the community this year.

Australian history witnessed two nations intertwining peace-

fully for decades. RESPECT and ACCEPTANCE was instru-

mental in forging their relationship. The Afghani cameleers

sought permission from the Aboriginal people by lighting a

fire, waiting for permission to be granted before settling on

their lands. The journey ignited with respect, strengthened

over the years as members of the two nations married one

another, named their children, and even their streets, with

Islamic names. This was one of the historic stepping stones

which helped pave the way to the Australian multicultural

society we all enjoy today.

Australian Federal Police is our partner on this project, their

commu-

nity liaison member, Anisa Sharif, who is a mosaic artist

worked on the mosaic project with the students, staff, par-

ents and members of the aboriginal community. Aunty Kerry

who is a staff member at RMIT in the area of Aboriginal

health, her husband and Ron Murray, who is an Aboriginal

speaker joined us with this project. Ron will be joining the

unveiling ceremony to address our students and share the

interaction between the Aboriginals and the Afghani Camel-

eers from an Aboriginal perspective.

The mosaic work depicts Islamic and Aboriginal art on each

side with the Aboriginal, Islamic and Australian flag. You

could also see the Afghani cameleers travelling through the

desert, an Aboriginal man playing the didgeridoo and the

Uluru in the middle.

We are pleased to establish links with the Aboriginal com-

munity and raise awareness of the positive interactions that

the Afghani cameleers and the Aboriginal people had years

back and hope to continue this into the future.

T he Year 7 students

were engaged in a

number of academic

and recreational activities

during Term 2. The 2017 Year

and fun learning experience. It

provided the students with an

opportunity to build friend-

bullying at an early stage in

their secondary schooling and

enhance their Islamic values.

The camp was held at Allam-

bee Camp site Allambee Re-

The students build new friend-

ships and strength-

ened their relation-

ship with their men-

tor teachers and

their Level man-

the activities and

shared their

achievements with

their peers and

teachers.

Apart from the

camp the Year 7

an Iftar dinner at

the Tibas Restaurant in Rox-

burgh Park on the 7th June

2016. This event developed a

sense of spiritual connection

amongst the students and

staff.

Y ear 8 students participated in a graffiti education

program to help make our school community a safer,

cleaner and happier place now and in the future.

Students were informed about the legal, social and personal

learnt new skills in events

management.

Year 9 CAMP - Students par-

ticipated in many activities

including crate climbing, High

Ropes and Mountain Biking,

archery, leap of faith and the

vertical challenge. Teachers

organised special activities for

students such as a bon fire

and fashion parade. The year 9

girls worked on developing self-

neuroscience research and careers in

neuroscience. This competition has four

rounds.

These students studied the book

„Neuroscience: Science of the Brain‟

and completed the round 1 online

quiz held at Ilim College.

Four of these have performed excep-

tionally well in round 1 and have

been invited to attend a full day of

activities at the „Melbourne Brain

Centre, University of Melbourne. On

this day, the students will participate

in Round 2 – Regional finals where

they will compete against other Victo-

rian schools. Well done to Easha

Nasir, Hafsah Chao, Maryam Ali and

T erm 2 has been very produc-

tive and engaging for the year

10 students. They have been

involved in various engaging and edu-

cational activities. These include Sci-

ence competitions, Quran competi-

tions and interschool sports.

This term, students have been work-

ing hard to prepare for their first offi-

cial Unit 1 exam. Studying a year 11

subject has provided students with an

insight into the expectations and stan-

dards of VCE. Students have been

exploring their options and are begin-

ning to make more ideal career

choices.

A group of students participated in

interschool sports where they dis-

played great teamwork and skills in

Y ear 11 enjoyed a busy and vibrant term. Term 2 started

with a visit from a motivational speaker Darren Prierra on

27th April that focused on study skills and goal setting.

Year 11 girls enjoyed a multicultural breakfast with their teachers

on Friday 6th May. It was wonderful to see them interact and

communicate in an informal environment.

Students from Year 11 Visual Communication and Design at-

tended an excursion on 31st May to expand their knowledge in

the exciting and diverse world of Design. Students attended the

Top Designs exhibition at the Melbourne Museum and viewed the

highest scoring year 12 design Folios and works in the state from

last year.

Year 11 students also had an incursion " Fit to drive" on Tues-

day 10th May They learned the dangers involved in rack less

driving and how to stay safe on the road. It was a real eye

opener for them as they heard the sad stories told by the fam-

ily members of teenagers killed in road accidents. We wish all

the best to our new drivers! An iftar was oragnised at Tiba

T erm 2 has been a very busy time for our year 12‟s. We started off

the term well with a presentation from the local council members

from the GPAN organization. GPAN (Good People Act Now) is a

program that supports mutual respect and fights domestic violence. The

students thoroughly enjoyed the scenarios and debate discussions.

A few weeks into the term all of our students took part in attending The

Annual Age Careers Expo at Caulfield which gave students great insight

into course selections and enabled them to make direct contact with

representatives from the universities they are interested in attending.

Text and Tradition students alongside interfaith students have taken

part in attending an excursion to a Christian church and Jewish syna-

gogue. Students had a great time exploring the venues and they also

had an opportunity to ask questions to the priest of the church and the

representatives of the synagogue.

Alongside our excursions we also had a few other incursions.

Darren Pierra visited our school and presented a seminar to

our year 12 students on study strategies and tips on achiev-

ing success during exams. A member from the Australian

Federal Police also visited our school and had lunch with the

boys and discussed any questions or queries the boys may

have had in relation to any matters. He also gave our stu-

Our very own Year 10

student, Easha Nasir was

featured in Hume Leaders

Newspaper this week for

her success in publishing

her first book “The

Journey to Success”.

Ms Zeynep Sertel, our

Secondary Principal said,

“Its very inspiring to see

one of our own student

taking the initiative to

pursue her dreams and

becoming an author at

such a young age. Her

passion will be an

inspiration to our

students. We feel proud.”
