Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,
Dear Parents/Guardians and students,
Alhamdulillah we finished Term 2 with a wide array of
programs and activities that were both entertaining and
educational for all students, parents and teachers alike. I
would like to thank our staff and volunteers for their dedi-
cation and efforts in initiating and running programs,
activities, excursions and incursions to provide better
learning opportunities.. May Allah SWT reward you all
that were involved for their immense hard works and ef-
forts.
We are excited to implement “Restorative Practices” in
2016 for the secondary school. The Restorative Practices
Program assists teachers, students and parents to build,
maintain and restore relationships. Restorative Practices
will help build capacity to enable students to self-regulate
behaviour and contribute to the improvement of learning
outcomes. We are pleased to have Adam Voigt as a con-
sultant in delivering professional development sessions for
our teachers and implementing the strategies for a suc-
cessful outcome in order to help benefit the Ilim commu-
nity. Adam will also be running a seminar session for our
parents later this year.
Students were immersed in the spirit of Ramadan via our
special programs and activities that were provided for
them. Each morning throughout Ramadan, the students
days began with a beautiful 15 minute recitation of the
Quran. In addition, the Islamic studies, PSD and Quran
Domain Weeks have added extra flavour to Ramadan and
I would like to give a special thank-you to Ms Ruya Shah,
Ms Aysegul Sertel and Ms Fatmanur Sertel-Yagmur and
their team for their efforts in organising the activities and
the assemblies during the Domain Weeks.
The Islamic Enrichment Committee, Ms Nasrein Zahra-
man and Ms Fatma Kilic and their team arranged Rama-
dan Food Drive by instilling a sense of charity in our
students and by teaching them to be considerate of others
by donating food to the less fortunate. The donated food
will be distributed to the refugees in Term 3 by Hasene
Charity Organisation.
The students also had the opportunity to break fast with
their peers which was arranged by their year level manag-
ers. I would also like to take this opportunity in thanking
all the Year Level Managers, Ms Yasmin Fatima, Ms
Rukiye Senturk, Ms Nasrein Zahraman, Ms Rabia Guney,
Ms Amina Rawal and Ms Sati Kuyruk for their tireless
contributions during the busiest month of the year for the
school.
Finally, the iCommunity committee, Ms Arzu Olcucu and
her team members together with Secondary Parent En-
gagement Officers have organised our first ever Parent
Iftar this Ramadan. We thank-you with the utmost sincer-
ity for your efforts and all the families that were both
involved and attended the Iftar. We, at Ilim College, were
very happy to see the school community come together to
celebrate the holiest month of the year, Ramadan.
We also take great pride and pleasure in sharing the
news of an exciting mosaic project “Connection to
Country”. The project is running in partnership with the
Australian Federal Police and the members of the Abo-
riginal community, and will be unveiled during the NAI-
DOC week celebrations. We were humbled to have ABC
News aired a segment of this wonderful project showcas-
ing our students and other community members whom
were working together and building gaps and bridges of
understanding between cultures.
We would be delighted to have you join us on the 14th of
July at 11:00 at the ceremony which will be held at the
Dallas Campus, Assembly Hall. Please see page 8 for
further details on the project.
I conclude by extending warm wishes to both you and
your family a happy and joyous Eid. We thank you for
your continuous support in providing better opportunities
for future generations.

W e are pleased to share “Connection to Coun-
try” Mosaic Art Work which will be unveiled
during the National Aboriginal and Islander Day
Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week celebrations on the
14th of July on our school grounds.
After taking the secondary student leadership team to the
Islamic Museum at the beginning of the term where they
learnt about the Afghani cameleers, the positive interaction
they had with the Aboriginal community and their contribu-
tion to the wider community, we decided to do a follow
up project to bring awareness about this topic on school
grounds involving students and the community. Hence, we
will be celebrating the NAIDOC week on a wider scale with
the community this year.
Australian history witnessed two nations intertwining peace-
fully for decades. RESPECT and ACCEPTANCE was instru-
mental in forging their relationship. The Afghani cameleers
sought permission from the Aboriginal people by lighting a
fire, waiting for permission to be granted before settling on
their lands. The journey ignited with respect, strengthened
over the years as members of the two nations married one
another, named their children, and even their streets, with
Islamic names. This was one of the historic stepping stones
which helped pave the way to the Australian multicultural
society we all enjoy today.
Australian Federal Police is our partner on this project, their
commu-
nity liaison member, Anisa Sharif, who is a mosaic artist
worked on the mosaic project with the students, staff, par-
ents and members of the aboriginal community. Aunty Kerry
who is a staff member at RMIT in the area of Aboriginal
health, her husband and Ron Murray, who is an Aboriginal
speaker joined us with this project. Ron will be joining the
unveiling ceremony to address our students and share the
interaction between the Aboriginals and the Afghani Camel-
eers from an Aboriginal perspective.
The mosaic work depicts Islamic and Aboriginal art on each
side with the Aboriginal, Islamic and Australian flag. You
could also see the Afghani cameleers travelling through the
desert, an Aboriginal man playing the didgeridoo and the
Uluru in the middle.
We are pleased to establish links with the Aboriginal com-
munity and raise awareness of the positive interactions that
the Afghani cameleers and the Aboriginal people had years
back and hope to continue this into the future.

T erm 2 has been a very busy time for our year 12‟s. We started off
the term well with a presentation from the local council members
from the GPAN organization. GPAN (Good People Act Now) is a
program that supports mutual respect and fights domestic violence. The
students thoroughly enjoyed the scenarios and debate discussions.
A few weeks into the term all of our students took part in attending The
Annual Age Careers Expo at Caulfield which gave students great insight
into course selections and enabled them to make direct contact with
representatives from the universities they are interested in attending.
Text and Tradition students alongside interfaith students have taken
part in attending an excursion to a Christian church and Jewish syna-
gogue. Students had a great time exploring the venues and they also
had an opportunity to ask questions to the priest of the church and the
representatives of the synagogue.
Alongside our excursions we also had a few other incursions.
Darren Pierra visited our school and presented a seminar to
our year 12 students on study strategies and tips on achiev-
ing success during exams. A member from the Australian
Federal Police also visited our school and had lunch with the
boys and discussed any questions or queries the boys may
have had in relation to any matters. He also gave our stu-
