Cardinal Joseph Cardijn, the famous founder of the Young Christian Workers movement, urged everyone to keep their eyes and ears open to what is happening around them. His two key words were ‘consciousness’ and ‘responsibility’, always interpreted in light of the scriptures. Pope Francis has been deeply influenced by the famous Cardijn method of ‘See, Judge, Act’, and many of his documents reflect this, including his 2015 encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ and the Latin American bishops’ Aparecida Document of 2007, the writing of which, as Cardinal Bergoglio, he helped supervise. Cardijn’s is a method of empowerment for Christians to discern how the Holy Spirit is present in their lives, and calls them into action so everyone can lead a more loving, human and wholesome life. Responding to need Jesus has promised that he will come

again in glory, says St Mark, but in the gospel, Jesus warns his followers not to

waste time or ignore their current responsibilities. Like the man traveling abroad, Jesus entrusts his affairs into the

hands of the Christian community, and will demand an account when he returns.

No one knows when the master will return, hence the warning to

stay awake and alert.

What Jesus is calling for, of course, is that we love one another, not just as a vague sentiment, but in real, practical responses to the

needs of people around us, especially people who are sick, hungry, destitute and oppressed: In the Bible’s code word, the poor.

Being alert means being conscious of what is happening to people, especially those in trouble or distress, or as Pope Francis keeps reminding us, the marginalised. They are the people who are overlooked or left out because of race, gender, nationality, religion,

disability or lack of opportunity and education.

But being aware is useless unless it prompts us to take whatever responsibility we can to help people personally and try to change

things socially. Jesus insists very strongly that we take responsibility: ‘When did we see you hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison?’ That was me you saw, he replies. God identifies with

people in distress.

From the start, Christians tried to respond to the cries of those around them. In more recent centuries, Christians have been at the

forefront in developing hospitals and schools, social reform movements and unions, promoting networks of collaboration internationally to end wars and secure peace, promote economic and social development and to safeguard the environment.

The Second Vatican Council stressed that such social concern is at the very heart of the gospel. Being alert means reading the ‘signs

of the times’ and not retreating to a religious bubble or ghetto. Cardinal Joseph Cardijn, the famous founder of the Young Christian Workers movement, urged everyone to keep their eyes and ears open to what is happening around them. His two key

words were ‘consciousness’ and ‘responsibility’, always interpreted in light of the scriptures.

Pope Francis has been deeply influenced by the famous Cardijn method of ‘See, Judge, Act’, and many of his documents reflect this, including his 2015 encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ and the Latin American bishops’ Aparecida Document of 2007, the writing of

which, as Cardinal Bergoglio, he helped supervise.

Cardijn’s is a method of empowerment for Christians to discern

how the Holy Spirit is present in their lives, and calls them into

action so everyone can lead a more loving, human and wholesome

life. So, Pope Francis is inviting us to join in this great dialogue or

conversation on how to restore our planet, remove unfair economic

and social inequalities, and build networks of solidarity to ensure

peace and security for coming generations.

YEAR OF YOUTH The Australian Bishops have identified the liturgical year of 2018, beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, as a national Year of Youth. The Year of Youth invites the church into dialogue about the

importance and life-giving presence of young people in the Church and society.

It calls for dialogue and active engagement focussed on reconnection

and renewal of a new generation of young people in the life of the Church. The Year of Youth aims:

prayerfully discern the Australian Bishops vision with young people, Anointed and Sent;

authentic and personal behaviour by Church leaders in the

challenges and success in young peoples lives; acknowledging the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of young

people, and young people acting upon the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church; and

upholding the dignity of young people, ensuring a safe environment from physical, emotional & physical harm.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT - Year B

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: (Ps: 85) R. Come, O Lord, and set us free.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Alleluia, Alleluia! Lord, show us your mercy and love, and grant us you salvation. Alleluia!

Dear Friends,

For the society in which we live Christmas is upon us, Christmas is everywhere. It will all end abruptly on the evening of the 25th of December. Then for many the great march to summer holidays is on. Everybody will be thinking New Years Eve and associated parties. Then a week or two later it’s back to work. It is at this time of year that our faith is most counter cultural, we completely stand against what is going on around us. We begin Advent this weekend and we watch, wait and prepare to celebrate the moment when Jesus was born in this human world in a common stable to very ordinary young parents. Yet most extraordinary in so many other ways. We won’t sing about or celebrate anything to do with Christmas until the 25th of December and then we will celebrate the Season of Christmas for two weeks. The rest of the world will have moved on.

The struggle to stay focused on our faith journey is very hard, but the time spent in preparation for Christmas is well worth it. We move very deliberately from the secular to the sacred even when everybody else is going in the other direction. When we focus on the Advent message we begin to deepen our relationship with God and the Holy Family in a very profound way. Mary reminds us of simplicity, the value of family, love and nurture. Joseph teaches and reminds of gentle determination in the face of difficulties, he also reminds us of the deep love of a father for his family. Jesus reminds us that he came to live among us to teach us to live simply, well and to above all love God and neighbour.

A tall order at this time of year, St Ignatius of Loyala teaches us that time spent in prayer and quiet can change the direction of our lives. We will find ourselves waiting in lines or queues many times in the next few weeks. That could be an opportunity to have a quick chat to God and ask him for the grace to celebrate and honour his Son’s birth into this world. We might be surprised just how many opportunities present themselves. A prayer for the lost, the lonely and the unwanted won’t go astray either.

Finally my deepest and heartfelt thanks for a wonderful Christmas Carnival. It was a very fitting way to begin Advent. The Tableau is our gift as Catholics to the wider community of Murwillumbah.

May God bless you richly and gently as you and your families journey towards the holy feast of Christmas.
