My dear parishioners, The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I had the privilege and honor of celebrating the funeral Mass of a friend of mine. Nancy Fanning, who died at the age of 84, was the rectory cook for 35 years at St. Teresa of Avi-la, South Ozone Park. I first went to St. Teresa of Avila back in the summer of 1993 as a seminarian to run the new summer camp. After a wonderful summer, it be-came my home for the rest of the time I was in the semi-nary. I met Nancy my first day there and we hit it off from the beginning. I remember not only her excellent meals, but her laughter and joy. She has two children, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. I saw her grandchildren grow up, especially through photos and the stories about them. Nancy widowed at an early age and had to raise her teenaged children by herself. She got a job at the rectory and became a fixture there for the next 35 years. Nancy was a very faithful parishioner of St. Te-resa and knew almost everybody. She loved the priests she served and did so with great ability and care. She genuinely cared about the priests and wanted them to be well. She knew that back then I did not like vegeta-bles and I would not eat anything green. One day I came to the table and she had a bowl of lettuce. She told me that today I was going to try some lettuce and she had ten different bottles of salad dressing there to help me make it go easier. Creamy Italian won the day and from that day forward I started eating salad. She did that because she loved me and was genuinely concerned about my health. She was very happy that in the last year I began to eat healthier. Even after I was ordained, she never lost con-tact with me. I would get five cards a year from her. I would get one for my birthday, one for Christmas, one for Thanksgiving, one for Easter and even one for St. Patrick’s Day. She would call me during the year just to chat and catch up on people we knew. When she was healthier, we would get together for lunch a few times a year. Being a cook was not just a job for her, she did it with true Christian love. On the day of her funeral, five priests concele-brated the Mass and a deacon was there too. It was a wonderful tribute to a fine lady who was one of the best people I know. It is never easy to lose someone you love, but I know that I will see her again in God’s King-dom. I am sure that when she enters the gates of heav-en, she will be praying for all her loved ones to join her and the priests whom she loves. God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, El miércoles antes del Día de Acción de Gracias, tuve el privilegio y honor de celebrar las exequias de una amiga mía. Nancy Fanning, quien falleció a la edad de 84 años, fue la cocinera por 35 años de la parroquial de San-ta Teresa de Ávila, en Ozone Park. Yo fui por primera vez a Santa Teresa de Ávila en el verano de 1993 como semi-narista encargado del campo de verano. Después de un maravilloso verano, se convirtió en mi casa por el resto del tiempo que estuve en el seminario. Conocí a Nancy el primer día que llegué allí y nos llevamos bien desde el principio. Recuerdo, no sola-mente sus excelentes comidas, sino también su risa y ale-gría. Ella tiene dos hijos, cuatro nietos y tres bisnietos. Yo vi crecer a sus nietos, especialmente por medio de fotos e historias acerca de ellos. Nancy enviudó a temprana edad y crio a sus hijos adolescentes ella sola. Ella obtuvo el trabajo en la oficina parroquial y se convirtió en una figu-ra allí por los próximos 35 años. Nancy fue una feligrés muy fiel de Santa Teresa y conocia a casi todos. Ella tuvo mucho cariño por los sacerdotes que sirvió y lo hizo muy hábilmente y con cui-dado. Ella realmente se preocupaba por los sacerdotes y quería que estuvieran bien. Ella sabía que en aquel enton-ces no me gustaban los vegetales y que no comía nada verde. Un día llegué a la mesa y ella tenía un plato con lechuga. Me dijo que ese día yo iba a tratar de comer algo de lechuga y ella tenía diez botellas de diferentes adere-zos de ensaladas para ayudarme a hacerlo más fácil. Cre-ma Italiana ganó ese día y de ese día en adelante comencé a comer ensalada. Ella hizo eso porque me quería y esta-ba realmente preocupada por mi salud. Ella estaba feliz de que el año pasado comencé a comer más saludable. Aún después que me ordené, ella no dejó de con-tactarme. Yo recibía cinco tarjetas de ella cada año. Reci-bía una para mi cumpleaños, una para la Navidad, una para el Día de Acción de Gracias, una para la Pascua y hasta una para el día de San Patricio. Ella me llamaba durante el año solamente para conversar y saber de gente que conocíamos. Cuando ella estaba más saludable, nos reuníamos para almorzar varias veces al año. Ser una cocinera no era solamente un trabajo para ella, ella lo hizo con verdadero amor de cristiana. El día de sus exequias, cinco sacerdotes concele-braron la Misa y un diácono estaba allí también. Fue un hermoso tributo a una bella dama quien fue una de las mejores personas que conozco. Nunca es fácil perder a alguien a quien se quiere, pero yo se que la veré otra vez en el Reino de Dios. Estoy seguro que cuando ella entre por las puertas del cielo, estará orando por todos sus se-res queridos para que se unan a ella y los sacerdotes a quien ella quiso.

Advent Reconciliation Monday On Monday, December 16, our Diocese will join the Archdio-cese of New York in celebrating Advent Reconciliation Monday. On this special day, all the parishes of our dioceses will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, in prepara-tion for the great Feast of the Lord’s Nativity.

Annual Catholic Appeal 2019 Our goal for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is $47,014. Al-ready 109 donors have pledged $36,809.18 and $34,504.17 have been paid. I would like to thank all those individuals who made a pledge to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal at our par-ish. If you would like to make a donation, please call the rectory for more information.

Immaculate Conception Since December 8th falls on a Sunday this year, the Sunday has precedence. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is then transferred to the next day which is Monday, December 9th. Although the feast is transferred, the obligation to attend Mass does not. There is just the 8:30 am Mass that day.

Christmas Gifts Please help make Christmas a little brighter for someone this year. We will once again be collecting gifts for St. John’s Home for Boys and Hour Children. This year we will also be collecting gifts for Catholic Charities. Hour Children helps the families of women who were recently incarcerated. St. John’s Home is a residence for boys from troubled families. Catholic Chari-ties helps many, many families who have a variety of needs. Gift tags are in baskets on the altar and in the back of the church. The gifts will be picked up on Monday, December 16th. St. Mary’s has been very generous in past years and it has been greatly appreciated. May God bless you for your generosity.

Birthday Party for Jesus All the children in the parish are invited to take part in our "birthday party for Jesus" on Saturday December 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the parish room. There will be food, games, crafts – and a chance to celebrate the real "reason for the season" the birth of Christ. There is no charge, but we would be grateful if you could donate a toy for a needy child. Hope you can make it!

Lunes de Reconciliación de Adviento El lunes 16 de diciembre, nuestra diócesis se unirá a la Arqui-diócesis de Nueva York, celebrando el Lunes de Reconciliación de Adviento. En este día especial, todas las parroquias de nues-tras diócesis ofrecerán el Sacramento de la Confesión de 4:00 a 8:00 pm, en preparación para la gran Solemnidad de la Nativi-dad del Señor.

Inmaculada Concepción Como el 8 de diciembre cae en domingo este año, el Domingo tiene precedencia. La Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concep-ción se ha transferido al día siguiente, el lunes 9 de diciembre. Aunque la fiesta se ha transferido, no es día de obligación. Sola-mente tendremos la Misa de 8:30 am ese día.

Fiesta de Cumpleaños para Jesús Todos los niños de la parroquia están invitados a tomar parte en nuestra “fiesta de cumpleaños para Jesús” el sábado 14 de diciembre a las 11:00 am en el salón parroquial. Habrá comida, juegos, arte y la oportunidad de celebrar la real “razón de la época” el nacimiento de Cristo. Es gratis, pero les agradecería-mos si pudieran donar un juguete para un niño necesitado. ¡Esperamos que puedan asistir!

de la mañana de los sábados Regalos de Navidad Por favor ayuden a hacer la Navidad un poco más brillante para alguien este año. Una vez más estaremos recolectando regalos para los muchachos de la Casa St. John y Hour Children. Este año además estaremos recolectando regalos para Caridades Ca-tólicas. Hour Children ayuda a familias de mujeres que han sido recientemente encarceladas. La Casa St. John es una resi-dencia para muchachos con familias con problemas. Caridades Católicas ayuda a muchas, muchas familias que tienen diferen-tes necesidades. En el altar habrá canastas con papelitos, indi-cando que regalo comprar. Los regalos los recogerán el lunes 16 de diciembre, María Auxiliadora ha sido muy generosa en los años anteriores y se aprecia grandemente. Que Dios los bendiga por su generosidad.

The Catholic Church gave us The Bible

The Catholic Church trusted the Holy Spirit to select which books belonged in the Bible and which ones did not. This process was called the canonization (Kanon, Greek for “measuring stick”). With prayer, study, and the gift of communal discernment, bishops in the fourth and fifth centuries had to determine which books were truly inspired by God versus which ones were of merely human origin.
