[IF...+ PAST SIMPLE] + [WOULD + VERBO PRINCIPAL]Si ganase la lotera, me comprara una casa.

If I won the lottery, I would buy a house

If I won the lottery, I could buy a house

If I didnt win the lottery, I wouldnt buy a house.

Unless I won the lottery, I wouldn't buy a house.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

    Me comprara una casa.

    Second conditional excercises

    Carlos Adrin Mtz Almanza

    I would buy a house.

    QU DEBO RECORDAR?

WAS/WERE: Debemos recordar que cuando usamos el verbo 'to be' podemos utilizar la forma 'were' (enlugar de 'was') para todas las personas.

IfI were you, I would buy a new car.

Ifhe were rich, he would buy a new car.

If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.

I would buy a house if I won the lottery.

*2Recuerda, adems, que podemos encontrar 'would' contrado.

Compare these examples:(1) Lisa has lost her watch. She tells Sue:

Lisa: I 've lost m y watch . Have you seen it anywhere?

Sue: No, but i f I find it , I' l l tell you .In this example, Sue feels there is a real possibility that she will find the watch. So she

    says: if I find..., I'll... .

    (2) Joe says:I f I found a w al let in the street, I'd take it to the p ol ice station.

This is a different type of situation. Here, Joe doesn't expect to find a wallet in the street: heis imagining a situation that will probably not happen.

    So he says: if I found ... , I'd (= I would) ... . (not if I find ..., I'll ...)

When you imagine something like this, you use if + past (if I found / if there was / if we didn'tetc.). But the meaning is not past:

What would you do i f you w on a mi l l ion pounds? (we don' t real ly expect th is to happen)

    I don ' t real ly want to go to thei r party , but I probably w i l l go. They'd be upset i f I d idn ' t go.

I f there was (or were) an elect ion to morrow , who w ould you vote for?

We do not normally use would in the if-part of the sentence:

I 'd be very fr ightened i f somebody pointed a gun at me. (not if somebody would point) I f I didn ' t go to th eir party, they'd be upset. (not If I wouldn't go)

But you can use if ... would when you ask somebody to do something:

( f rom a formal le tter) I would be gratefu l i f you wou ld let me know your decis ion as soo n

    as poss ib le.

In the other part of the sentence (not the if-part) we use would ('d) / wouldn't:

I f you took more exerc ise, you 'd(= you would) feel better. I'm not tired. If I went to bed now, I wouldn't sleep. Would you mind if I used your phone?

Could and might are also possible: I f you took more exerc ise, you might feel better . (= it is possible that you would feel better)

I f it stopped ra in ing, we could go out. (= we would be able to go out)

Do not use when in sentences like those on this page:

    They'd be up set i f I d idn ' t go to thei r par ty . (not when I didn't go)

What would you do i f you w ere bi t ten by a snake?(not when you were bitten)

    Study this example situation:

Sarah wants to phone Paul, but she can't do this because shedoesn't know his number. She says:I f I knew his number, I would phone him .

Sarah says: If I knew his number ... . This tells us that she doesn't know his number. She isimagining the situation. The real situation is that she doesn't know his number.

When you imagine a situation like this, you use if + past (if I knew / if you were / if we didn't

etc.). But the meaning is present, not past: Tom wo uld read mo re i f he had mo re t ime. (but he doesn't have much time) I f I didn ' t want to go to th e party, I wouldn ' t go. (but I want to go) We wouldn ' t have any m oney i f we didn ' t work. (but we work) I f you were in m y posi t ion, what would you do?

    I t 's a pi ty you c an't dr ive. It wo uld be usefu l i f y ou co uld.

We use the past in the same way after wish (I wish I knew /I wis h you

wereetc.). We use wishto say that we regret something, thatsomething is not as we would like it to be:

I wish I knew Paul 's ph one num ber.(= I don't know it and I regret this)

Do you ever wish you could f ly?

    (you can't fly) I t rains a lot here. I wis h it didn ' t rain so often.

I t 's very crowd ed here. I wish there weren' t so many people.(there are a lot of people)

I wish I didn ' t have to work tom orrow, but unfo r tunate ly I do.

    If I were / if I wasAfter if and wish, you can use were instead of was (i f I were ... / I wi sh it wereetc.). I was /it was are also possible. So you can say: I f I were you , I wou ldn' t bu y that coat. or If I was yo u, ... I 'd go o ut i f i t weren ' t so cold. or . .. i f i t wasn ' t so cold .

I wish Carol w ere here. or I wish Carol was h ere.

We do not normally use would in the if-part of the sentence or after wish:

I f I were rich, I wou ld have a yacht . (not If I would be rich) I wish I had som eth ing to read. (not I wish I would have)

Sometimes wish ... would is possible: I wish you would listen.

Could sometimes means 'would be able to' and sometimes 'was/were able to':

You could get a better job (you could get = you would be able to get)if you could use a computer. (you could use = you were able to use)
