Precision steel tubes for hydraulic and pneumatic applications

SMP offers specially optimised precision steel tubes with outside diameters from 30 to 380 mm and wall thicknesses up to 25 mm to suit a wide range of applications.

The typical features of cold fi nished precision steel tubes are:• free choice of continuous sizes• high dimensional accuracy• fi ne surface quality• defi nable mechanical properties• increased variety of materials possible

for seamless precision steel tubesThis makes cold fi nished precision steel tubes particularly suitable for use in hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

Particularly high requirements are placed on the fabrication of the working cylinder in such systems. Besides reliable static

and dynamic load behaviour, a decisive precondition for its functional effi ciency is the interaction of dimensional accuracy and a high-quality surface fi nish of the bore with the piston sealing. Our ongoing development of manufacturing processes and steel grades together with the use of modifi ed materials enable us to produce tubes with the mechanical and technological properties required specifi cally for hydraulic and pneumatic systems and tailored to our customers‘ individual requirements.

The modifi ed steel grades have been developed for use in low temperature conditions to prevent brittle fracturing or multiple component failure, thus raising the level of reliability for component parts.

Dimensional accuracyAs a result of the cold forming process, the tolerances of the diameter and wall thickness are substantially reduced when compared with hot rolled tubes. A shift of tolerances due to machining reasons is possible.

Delivery conditionsPrecision steel tubes are offered in accordance with customer‘s request and application in different delivery conditions. A survey of available delivery conditions is shown in Table 1.

Fine surface qualityThe surfaces of cold fi nished precision steel tubes in the delivery conditions +C, +SR and +N are free from scale and exhibit the smoothness typical of cold drawn products. The inside and outside surfaces of tubes in delivery condition +QT shall be typical of the heat treatment employed.

HPZ tubes are seamless cold finished precision steel tubes in the delivery condition +SR for the manufacture of cylinder barrels.

Tubes for cylinder construction are seamless cold finished precision steel tubes in the +N or +QT delivery condition or tubes in the +SR delivery condition outside of the specified dimensions or tolerances for the manufacture of cylinder barrels.

Cylinder tubes are available on request as finished HP tubes. The special characteristics of the inner surface are:

• low surface roughness values• high material ratio • favourable sliding properties

The following roughness values apply for the inside surfaces:

Type I: honing Type II: skiving and roller burnishing

Delivery condition +SR see Table 2, left-hand section see Table 2, right-hand section

Delivery condition +N see Table 3

Roughness values in accordance with ISO 4287 and ISO 4288

Ra < 0,3 μm

Rz < 2,0 μm

The piston seal requires a high quality surface which in case of tubes for cylinder barrels is achieved by machining. The inside diameter tolerances may be designed for either honing (type I) or skiving and roller-burnishing (type II).

Cylinder barrels are dimensioned by inside diameter and wall thickness. The outside diameter is a resulting size of these two dimensions. Inside diameter and eccentricity can be found in the tables listed below. For intermediate sizes, the permissible tolerances for the next nominal size up are applicable.

Tolerances according to EN 10305-1 apply for the outside diameter. Tubes can also be ordered by outside diameter and inside diameter or outside diameter and wall thickness.

A change of the tolerances may be agreed upon; for telescopic cylinders, a machining allowance can be applied to the outside diameter.

For the outside surface, EN 10305-1 is applicable.

Precision steel tubes in accordance with EN 10216 Parts 1 and 3

The EN 10216 series of standardsbelongs to the material standards harmo-nized within EC Directive 97/23/EC accor-ding to which SMP as a registered materials manufacturer supplies cold processed precision steel tubes in a wide range of sizes. Thanks to their continuous

sizes and improved tolerances and surfaces compared with hot fi nished tu-bes, precision steel tubes are fi nding increasing use as semi-fi nished products.

For hydraulic systems subject to the pressure equipment directive, Parts 1 and 3 of EN 10216 are taken primarily into account, as the design temperature limits lie within the range of -50°C and +100°C. Non-alloy steels and fi ne-grain structural steels are generally used in this temperature range. For Parts 2 and 4 of EN 10216, please refer to our brochure „Cold drawn seamless heat exchanger tubes for process industries“.

General In addition to seamless cylinder tubes welded cold drawn ready-to-use cylinder tubes with a smooth-drawn functional surface are also used. The inside surface of these tubes is smoothed and compressed with the aid of a special drawing technique. The typical surface profile shows no distinctive roughness peak heights with a high material ratio (see Figure 1).

Dimensions and tolerancesInside diameters and wall thicknesses of welded HPS tubes are shown in Table 8.

The limits provided for the inside diameter are in accordance with the H9 to H10 ISO tolerance fields.

HPS tubes can also be ordered by outside diameter and inside diameter. The maximum eccentricity is 4 %. HPS tubes are specially straightened with regard to the intended application. The straightness measurement is carried out on 1 metre tube sections. The maximum permissible out-of-straightness is 0,0007 · L. This deviation is measured between the tube outside surface and a straight line (chord) which connects the end points.

Precision steel tubes in accordance with EN 10305-2

Steel gradesWelded ready-to-use cylinder tubing with smooth-drawn functional surface is usually manufactured in grade E355 steel. The supply of tubes in E235 is subject to special agreement.

Delivery conditionHPS tubes are supplied in the +C delivery condition, i. e. no heat treatment is carried out after the final cold forming step. The formability of such tubing is limited. Residual stresses may occur.

Surface conditionA roughness value of Ra < 0,8 μm applies to the inside surface, in compliance with ISO 4287 and ISO 4288.For the outside surface, EN 10305-2 is applicable.

LengthsThe following differentiation is made with regard to tubing length:• Random length: length of at least 3 m.

Common random length is 5 – 7 m. Difference in length of individual tubes may not exceed 2 m.

• Approximate length: specified length with permissible deviations of ± 500 mm. Up to 10 % of the order volume can be supplied in shorter lengths ≥ 2m. Shorter lengths must be packaged separately.

• Exact length or combined length: specified length with permissible deviations as shown in Table 11.

StraightnessTubes for hydraulic and pneumatic applications are specially straightened with regard to the intended application. The maximum permissible out-of-straightness is 1/1000 mm. The straightness measurement is carried out on 1-metre tube sections. Deviation is measured between the tube outside surface and a straight line (cord) which connects the end points. Higher requirements on tube straightness are subject to special agreement.
