Caradon, a manufacturer of domestic, commercial and industrial boilers, uses a 12 ton/hr hot blast cupola to pro- duce castings for the boilers’ heat exchangers. Designed for maximum emission levels of 20 mg/m3, monitoring has revealed that the extraction system is achieving levels of between 4 and 5 mg/m3. Current EPA requirements for cupolas specify a maximum emission level of 50 mg/m3. Airmaster say the system has a maximum extraction volume of 30,000 m3/air/hr. Dust and gases are removed from the cupola, cooled, and then cleaned by a cassette type filter fitted with polyester needle felt media before being discharged to atmosphere.via a 29 m high exhaust stack. It is reported that the Airmaster equipment replaced an elderly bag filtration system which Caradon Ideal did not think complied with EPA requirements. “As it was not equipped with a stack, there was just no way we could measure the emission levels to find out,” commented the company’s works engineering manager, Peter Toker. Caradon say that as well as meeting current and pre- dicted EPA emission requirements, the system has provid- ed a much cleaner environment for its employees working within the foundry area. German-based company Radyne introduced its Radyne Scwalbach range of high frequency dielectric sealing systems to the US market at Filtration 97 in December.

Radyne report that turnkey systems have been in operation in Europe for the last six
