    IntroductionIamreallyexcitedabouttheupcomingdeliveryofScythe.ItlookstobeanothergreatgamewiththeamazingcomponentsthatStonemaierGamesisknownfor.WhenJameyStegmaiergavemetheopportunitytoshowwhattheminiatureslooklikepainted,Iwashappytodoit.NowthatIvecompletedthepainting,IwantedtoprovideaPaintingJournaltodescribewhatIdidandwhy.Thisisnotmeanttobeastepbystepguideonhowtopaintyourminiatures,butmoreofasourceofinspirationforyourowncreations.Ihopeyouwillfindituseful,andIlookforwardtoseeingwhatyoucandowithyourownsetofminiaturesandpaints.Oneofthechallengeswastofindtherightartworktouseasaguideforcolorselection.JameyhasgraciouslygivenpermissiontoincludeJakubRozalskisamazingartinthisdocumentforeasyaccesswhilepainting.Thanks,Jamey!BeforeIgoanyfurther,letmestatethatIamnotaprofessionalpainter.Iammostlyselftaught,whilepickingupafewpointersfrommagazinesandvideosovertheyears.IsimplydidthebestIcouldwithwhatIhadavailabletome,andIwilltrytodescribesomeofthosechoicesandtechniqueshereforyou.IdontuseanymagnificationwhenIpaint.Instead,Ipaintbythemotto,ifIcantseeit,itdoesntexist.

    ToolsForpaints,IusedolderGamesWorkshopCitadelsuppliesIhadlyingaround.Iusedsomespraycansforthebasecoat,andstandardorfoundationpaintsformostareas.Thecolornameshavechanged,soIllrefertothemdescriptively.Ialsomadeheavyuseofwashes,alsocalledinks,togivetheminiaturesashadedorblendedlook.Theseareessential,inmyopinion.Imainlyused4differentbrushesforthisproject:

    BasecoatBrushThiswasmymainbrushformostareas.Itisingoodenoughshapetogetsomedetail,butbigenoughtocoverlargerareasquickly.Ievenuseditforapplyingwashesinsmallerareas.

    FineDetailBrushUsedforanythingIcouldntcontrolwiththebasecoatbrush. WashBrushForlargerwashareaapplications. MediumDrybrushFordrybrushingonsomeofthattexturedlook.

    PreparationThefirststepwastoprimealloftheminiatureswithabasecoat.Ididabouthalfoftheminwhiteandtheotherhalfinblack,butlookingbacknowIwishIhaddoneallinblackexceptforZehra&KaroftheCrimeanfaction,Olga&ChangaoftheRusvietfaction,andthePolaniaMech.Ifeelthatablackbasecoatismoreforgivingifyoumissaspot.IdidnotworryaboutthebasesatthispointasIplannedtopaintoverthemwithacolorsimilartotheiroriginalplasticwhenIfinished.

  • TheCharactersThecharactersrepresentapersonandtheiranimalcompanion,makinganinterestingcombinationtopainttogether.Themainthingtorememberaboutthecharactersisthatthesecharactersareinthemiddleofawarzone.Theyshouldlookdirty,sodontbeafraidtothrowsomemudontheircleanclothes.Onechallengeofpaintingtheanimalsisthattheyarentastexturedastheirreallifecounterparts.Thismeanyouhavetospendalittleextratimetryingtomakethemlookfurry(orfeathery)usingdrybrushingandafewextralayersofwash.

    Gunter&NachtThiswasthefirstcharacterIpainted,anditisstillmyfavorite.ThebestpartaboutGunteristhatbetweenhishatandhissquinting,youcantreallyseehiseyes.Thisletmefocusonsomeotherdetailssuchastheliningofhiscoat.First,Ipaintedthecoat,pants,andshirtwithadarkgray.ThenItookcareofsomelargerdetailssuchasthegunholster,theshoes,thebelt,andtheinsideliningofthecoat(inamaroon/burgundycolor).Afterwards,Iapplieda

    layerortwoofblackwashforshadows,thenalayerofbrownwashtothelowerpartstotrytogivehimthatwelltraveledlook.Thehelmetispaintedwitharealdarkmetalliccolor,givingitamostlyblacklookwithalittleshinetoit.Thebeardisdoneinaleathercolorwithaheavybrownwashtogiveitsomedepth.Ialsoappliedalightwashtohishandsandface.

    Finally,thepartthatreallymakeshimpopthefinedetails.Forthis,Iusedametallicsilverorsteelcoloredpaint(minewascalledmithrilsilver).Iaddedatinydotforeachbutton,averythinlineforthecoatlining,abeltbuckle,andalineacrossthefrontofthehelmet.Ialsotriedaddingasmallspotonthefrontofthehelmettorepresenttheinsigniafoundthereintheart,thoughImnotsureitsevenvisibleatthisscale.

    Nachtwasmucheasier,mainlybecausehesalmostallblack.ImadesurethebasecoatwassolidandtouchedupanyspotsImissedwiththespraycan.ThenItookthedrybrushandaddedjustahintofamediumgrayallover.Theblackstillshowsthrough,butitlooksalittlemorenaturalthanasolidcolor.Ifthislookedtoolightafterwards,thenImayhaveusedacoatofblackwashtotoneitdown.Fortheeyes,Isimplyaddedtwoeerielookingdotsofoffwhite.ThecolorIusedwasbleachedbone,whichseemstobeagooddescription.

  • Zehra&KarIfoundtheminiatureofZehratobefullofinterestingdetails.Fromtheflowingdresswithrandombitsofcolorthroughouttotheobsceneamountofgoldjewelry,therewasplentytokeepmebusy.Istartedwiththedress,andforgoodreason.Ichosetouseoneofmyfavoritetechniqueshere,whichistocoloranareaentirelywithwashesinsteadofpaints.Startingwithawhitebase,Iaddedlayerafterlayerofredwashuntilthedresshadthepropershade.ImguessingIadded810layerstogettowhereitisnow,but

    resultsmayvary.Thishastheeffectofgivingthedressamaximumamountofdepthandshadowwithoutactuallyhavingtopaintlighteranddarkercolorsinthepeaksandvalleys.Thehatwasdonewiththesametechnique.Ifinishedthedresswithafewtinyspecksspreadthroughout,usingwhateveryelloworgreencolorsIsawintheartwork.Incontrast,thehatappearedtohavegoldspecs,whichIaddedinthesameway.Zehrashairwasdonewithadarkbrownfollowedbyseverallayersofblackwashuntilthebrownwasbarelyvisible.Herfaceiswellsculptedwithawelldefinedlocationforeyes.Idecidedtoattemptbothwhitesandpupils.Theresultwasatinybitofwhiteandadecentsetofpupilsthatarelookingmostlyinthesamedirection.ShedoesntsufferfromtoomuchofthewideeyedlookthatIstrugglewith.Mytechniqueforeyesisalittleodd,butitworksforme.Basically,I

    takeatinybitofpaintonmysmallestbrushandtrytotapitinthetargetarea.IfImiss,Ijustpaintoverwiththefleshcolorandtryagain.ThenifIamdoingadditionalcolors(suchasblackoverwhite)Itryagainwiththenextcolorandagain,coveritupifImiss.Oncetheeyesareintherightplace,Itakemoreofthefleshcolorand,comingupfromthebottom,IslowlycoveruptheareaundertheeyeuntilIhaveremovedsomeoftheroundnessfromtheshape.Ifthereisroom,Idothesamethingfromthetop.Zehrasgunwasnottoodifficult.Thebarrelwasnotseparatedfromthestock,soIhadtofreehandpaintastraightlinedownthelengthofittomakeitlookliketwoseparatepieces.Iusedthegunmetalcolorforthis.Thewoodwassimplymediumbrownwithabrownorblackwashtoaddsomewoodgrainshadows.Ithenfinishedwithafewringsofasteelcoloraroundthebarreltobreakitup.NotethatthegunsforBjorn,Olga,andAnnaweredoneinalmostthesamefashion.Therestofherequipmentwasaninterestingchallenge.Thebowwassculptedfordurability,sotheareabetweentheshaftandthestringisfilledin.Itriedtohidethisbyusingablackwashtocreateashadoweffect.Itdoesntdrawtheeyetoomuchaslongasthebowitselfismuchdarkerthanthisarea,thoughthelightgraycolorendeduplookingabitoutofplace.Thequiverwasdonewithasimplebrownfollowedbytwoshadesofgoldforthedecorations.Thearrowshavebrownshafts

    withredfeathers,withalotofblackwashtogetbetweenthearrowstoshowtexture.Thebowholderwasratherinteresting.Ifoundthataslightlyraisedpatternwassculptedintoit.Sincetheartdidnthaveanyreferenceforthisitem,Itriedtousecolorsthattiedherclothinginwiththecolorsonherfactionspowerdial.Tothatend,Iusedyellowandgold,withalighter

  • goldinthecenter.Findingtheactualpatternwasalittletricky,sinceitwasntraisedverymuch,butforthatsamereason,itisnotnoticeableifIhappenedtomissthelinesalittle.Thisareawascoveredwithanorange/sepiawashtoblendittogether.Zehrasjewelryisthefocalpointoftheminiature,bywhichImeanitisthefirstthingmyeyesaredrawnto.Forallofthegoldareas,includinghersleevesandbeltbuckle,Iusedadarkergoldforthebase,andthenpaintedafewcoinsontopwithalightershadeofgold.Ithenfollowedthiswithalightorange/sepiawashtoaddshadowswithouttakingawaytoomuchshine.Thedaggerwasagreatopportunityfordetail.Iusedasolidburgundyonthehiltandhandletomakeitstandoutfromthedress.Afewfinestrokesofgoldgaveitaniceaccenttomatchtheoriginalart.Karwasaninterestingchallenge.Themodelwassculptedwithafairamountoftextureforthefeathers,butIwasntabletogetthatmuchtoshowupbyusingawash.Afterseverallayerswithoutmuchdepthshowingup,Idecidedtotrydrybrushing.Ifoundatancolorthatwouldworkwellwiththebrownfoundation,andbrushedaroundthewingfeathers,aswellasalittleonthebodyandtail.Iamprettyhappywiththeresult,thoughitdoesntdojusticetotheoriginalartwork.

  • Bjorn&MoxBjornwasquitesimpletopaintcomparedtotheothercharacters.Hiseyesaresquinted,soIdidntbotherpaintingthem.Hisaccessoriesareprettysimple.Overall,hedidntrequiremuchdetail.Hiscoatwasasolidbluewithablackwashovertop.Igavehimablackbeltwithleathercoloredpouches.Hishairisalightbrownshadewithorangeandbrownwashesaddedontop.Forhisface,Istartedwithafleshcolorthatisabitrosierthantheothers,andthencarefullyaddedalittlebrownwashtotheeyesandmouth

    tomakethemstandout.Ifyoulookcarefullyattheminiatureandart,hehasapairofgoggles.Ipaintedtheseblackandthefollowedupwithasilvermetallicpaintforthelenses.Iusedthesamecolortopickout4buttonsonhiscoatwiththefinedetailbrush.Mox,incontrasttoBjorn,wasanythingbutsimple.Jakubsartshowsadynamicallycolored,furrybeast.Theminiaturewaswellsculpted,butitdoesnthavethetexturetomatchthefur.ThisleftthechallengeoftryingtoblendinafewofMoxsfurcolorsinanaturallookingpattern.Istartedbypaintingallofthefuradarkbrownfollowedbyalayersblackwashandalayerofbrownwash.Ithenfoundalighterbrownandappliedalightlydrybrushedlayeralloverthefur.Ihadtobecarefulbecausethereisnotalotoftexturetopickupthedrybrushing.Oftenwithdrybrushing,youcandragthebrushinanydirectionandgetthesameeffectasitcatchesonaraisedarea.Whenthesurfaceisflat,thelineswillreflectthebrushmovement.Next,Iwantedtocapturethe

    contrastingwhitehairdepictedintheartwork.Usinganoffwhitewithabitoftaninit,Iappliedveryfaintlayerofdrybrushingacrossthetopoftheheadandback.Itdidnttakemuch,sincethecolorwassocontrasting.Thehornsandfeetweredoneusingthesamecolorasthewhitehair.Iaddedahighlighttothefronttopsofthehornsinaslightlylightershade.Ialsousedthiscoloraroundthemouth,butfolloweditwithabrownwashtosubdueit.Moxseyesweredonewithafewlayersofblackwashfollowedbytwotinydotsofoffwhite.Ifinishedthehooveswithacarefullayerofbrownwashstartingwheretheankleendsandthehoofstarts.Acrosshishornsisdrapedapendantofsorts.Thestringforthisisa
