John 1:14

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Pastor's Column

Various ceremonies were held throughout the world this year to mark the centennial anniversary of the end of World War I and the armistice signed on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. Laurie and I were in Prescott that day for what our grandparents called Armistice Day and you and I call Veteran’s Day. We had never seen a Veteran’s Day Parade so large and so well done.

It made me think of Laurie’s grandfather, a World War I veteran who served with the U.S. Navy. Like many veterans of the Great War, he wrote poetry as a way to express his feelings about the war and about other things. His poem about the true meaning of Christmas was one of his best and I often reread it this time of year. So, in this centennial year, I wanted to share it with you again:

An old fashioned Christmas was surely a treat. It was the time of the year when the family would meet;Quite different from other holidays it seemed,For love and friendships by candle-light gleamed. There was something so fragrant, simple and good,When we sat by the fireplace and watched burning wood.In these days of progress we are all so awareThat to look back a few years isn’t cricket or fair. But ponder and wonder as Christmas draws near,–Have we gilded and polished the best day of the year?Without knowing just how it happened to beNow we have many an artificial Christmas tree. Two months before Christmas our merchants display So many new things that draw us awayFrom the Thanksgiving season, alas and alack,We are actually loaded with things to take back. The cards are pretty, modern and gay,And some are old fashioned for those who say,–That the theme of religion should not disappear,

At least not entirely this time of the year.Lights of all colors embrace our front doors,Odd looking Santas are seen in the stores.Shopping starts early and has no reins,Main street is dolled up with huge candy canes.A cynic, you say, hardly my friend;Only an observation wondering where it will end.How could we get back a real Christmas flareTo give more to others and have no care,To be at the office and join in the fun,Where Merrie Christmas and cocktails are both overdone?Somebody’s always a killjoy you say;Straitlaced and fuddy and doesn’t like to play?Christmas is mostly for children, we know; It’s a Christian’s duty to keep it so.Just as important as our annual Christmas tree,The Christ child our Savior everyone should see.The hope and the promise in these troubled times,Comes clear and convincing through the church chimes.

In His service,

Pastor Bruce
