The Scottish Society of Architect-Artists, SSAA, founded in 1987, aims to re-establish and rein-force traditional relationships between art and architecture.

Historically the architect was an artist – and art-ists became architects. The SSAA encourages members to continue developing their visual arts skills – drawing, painting, sculpture, pho-tography, print-making and other experimental art. It offers opportunities to continue art based educational interests by organising Exhibitions and Awards, ‘Paint and Pint days’, print work-shops and life classes often in conjunction with Leith School of Art.

Both artists and architects develop visual, men-tal and manual skills. Both work with texture, colour, form and light to manipulate senses in others who use or view their work. Architect-art-ists are unrestricted in their choices of media or subject matter. Traditional oils, gouache, inks and watercolours now combine with photog-raphy, computer generated imagery, and on occassions other experimental media to create vigorous exhibitions which range from monochromatic to vivid colour.

Scottish architect-artists have celebrated their 25th anniversary throughout 2012 with a busy programme of events, and the publication of a fully illustrated book “the first 25 years”. SSAA also enjoys association with the vintage “Ligne et Couleur” founded in Paris in 1881 and re-established in 1936. SSAA Members exhibit annually with European colleagues in France, Italy, Germany, and Poland, and now invite reciprocal contributions to all Scottish events.

Membership of the SSAA is open to all regis-tered architects, retired architects and past and present students of architecture resident in Scotland, together with expatriates.

To mark their 25th Anniversary the Scottish Society of Architect-Artists [SSAA] elected three members

as Honorary Fellows of the Society in 2012.

This is the first time that the Award of Honorary Fellow SSAA has been conferred and it acknowl-

edges exceptional contributions in support of the aims of the Society and to the wider enrich-ment of architectural art in Scotland by Hamish

Haswell-Smith, Dr Patricia Cain, and Sir H Anthony Wheeler.

Hamish Haswell-Smith was founder and first President SSAA. He has also served as President of Scottish Art Club. His enthusiasm for sailing and for

drawing and painting led him to write and illus-trate the best selling book “The Scottish Islands”

Patricia Cain widely acclaimed winner of the RGI House for an Art Lover Prize; and the Aspect Prize

for drawings of Glasgow’s new Riverside Museum, gained a scholarship to study at Glasgow School

of Art and received her Doctorate in 2008.

Sir H Anthony Wheeler former President of the Royal Scottish Academy, and of the Royal Incor-poration of Architects in Scotland, has served on the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland; and

was President SSAA from 1991 – 1993.

ALLAN PENDREIGH, distinguished archi-tect, artist and jazz musician, died in June 2012 at the age of 80. Born in Dalkeith, Allan studied mechanical engineering at Heriot-Watt, and after National Service worked with civil engineers Mason Ander-son & Partners. Later working with Cru-dens of Musselburgh he studied architec-ture, and graduated in 1966. Allan worked as an architect at the Ministry of Works, latterly PSA, on several civic projects in-cluding the Institute of Geological Science of the University of Edinburgh, and the plant houses of the Royal Botanic Garden. He became a renowned artist, painting, sketching and teaching art courses, and was a stalwart of the SSAA regularly dis-playing his work in exhibitions.

RICHARD DE’ATH died in November, 2011, aged 84. Born in West Yorkshire, Richard De’Ath was educated at Paisley Grammar School, Glasgow Academy, and the Glasgow School of Architecture. He stood out as a designer during National Service where he designed bridges. His entire working life as an architect was spent at Glasgow practice Keppie Henderson, where he worked on some of the country’s most prominent landmarks, including hospitals and the Glasgow Sheriff Court building. Although he officially retired almost 25 years ago, he completed his last project, a new home in Helensburgh, as he was approaching 80.

CHRIS CARTER 1926 - 2002 member no2 was a founding member of the SSAA. He studied at Edinburgh College at Art and became a Partner in Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners in 1966. Always interested in the outdoors, landscape and wildlife his work regularly appeared in The Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour.
