As phase III of the Campaign to Save
Lives, PHS is renovating existing space
to create the Neely Cat Center in or-
der to help save lives of more under-
age kittens and healthy, adoptable
cats. It will allow us to provide addi-
tional enrichment opportunities and,
most important, bring us one step
closer to our goal of zero euthanasia
of healthy, placeable cats.
“Cats are becoming more popular
pets,” says Steve McNall, president/
CEO. “The Neely Cat Center is an
investment in the welfare of cats in our
care and in our community.”
MAY | JUNE 2015
The Cat’s Meow: Neely Cat Center The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA has taken proactive steps to help animals in our community for over a century. In 2014, we expanded our campus with the Animal Care Center providing a new public spay/neuter clinic, Shelter Shop, training center and ample underground parking. Now, in 2015, we continue to help more animals than ever before with the opening of the Neely Cat Center.
compassion and care for all animals

(continued on back page)
When the Neely Cat Center opens,
cats will be housed in a state-of-the-
art building that is a stress-free zone
just for felines. Catching up quickly to
dogs as America’s most popular pet,
cats at PHS will have interactive toys,
increased enrichment opportunities,
as well as the top notch care we have
always given them.
PHS will be able to care for nursing
mothers and their kittens in the nurs-
ery while continuing to foster kittens
until they are ready to be adopted. The
Neely Cat Center provides PHS with the capacity to save thousands more
lives and brings us closer to our goal of zero euthanasia of adoptable animals.
We are not done! Because PHS is an open door shelter, we care for any
animal that needs us. To care for the many rabbits, birds, reptiles and pocket
pets that come to us, we have renovated an area just for them. We have
named it the Critter House and it will contain the most up-to-date equipment,
housing and even enrichment opportunities for these species. Please come to
visit The Neely Cat Center and the Critter House as soon as they are open.
Summertime is hard for many animals because of the drought and the heat.
Your vigilance may help save a life! If you see an animal in a car with the
windows shut and without access to water, call the nearest animal control
agency. For any animal incident in our nine cities—Arcadia, Bradbury, Glen-
dale, La Cañada Flintridge, Monrovia, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre and
South Pasadena—call 626.792.7151 ext. 102 to let our officers know. We will
always respond to an animal in distress!
Although animals are the heart and soul of the Pasadena Humane Society
& SPCA, our supporters, staff, volunteers, adopters and animal lovers are
essential to our success. Without their work, we would not be able to achieve
as much as we do.
Thank you for all that you do for the animals.

COMMUNITY HEROES
PAG E 3
Nancy & Al PlamannNancy and Al Plamann have spent
decades supporting the Pasadena
Humane Society and various local
charities. They have volunteered their
time as board members and have
worked to raise funds in support of
PHS and the programs and services
of local nonprofits to ensure the
community’s needs are addressed
and met.
A love of animals and the Pasadena
Humane Society’s reputation for
excellence led Nancy to become
involved. “I completed the volunteer
training and my first job was as a
dog washer,” she said.
Nancy recalled one time she picked
a dog that was in need of a bath.
“The dog was a bit big, but I was
able to lift her into the tub,” she said.
“However, I didn’t consider that when
thoroughly wet, she would be many
pounds heavier! Luckily, I was able to
lift her out of the tub after she shook
out her coat. She looked beautiful,
and I’m sure she was adopted the
next day.”
Nancy’s involvement grew when
she joined the Doglegs, Birdies and
Eagles Golf Tournament Committee,
which she chaired before being in-
vited to join the PHS Board of Direc-
tors. From there, Nancy co-chaired
the Capital Campaign Committee
and worked to ensure PHS achieved
its fundraising goals for the Animal
Care Center.
These days her focus has been the
Campaign to Save Cats. She and Al
made the decision to make a major
donation in support of the Neely Cat
Center. This facility will allow PHS
to save the lives of more cats and
kittens and ensure the shelter’s
future as the community’s premier
animal welfare agency.
“This is a dream come true for Al and
me,” Nancy said. “We are so thank-
ful for our generous PHS donors and
cannot wait for the grand opening
this summer!”
Nancy and Al Plamann are our com-
munity heroes because of all they
have done for the animals and for
their efforts on behalf of the following
organizations: Assistance League of
Flintridge, National Charity League,
Angels of Southern California Food
Industry Circle, Western Council of
the Autry National Center, San Gabriel
Council of the Boy Scouts of America
and Weingart Homeless Center.

HAPPY TAILS
Living the Good LifeTraylor was one of seven orphaned,
underage puppies found stray on the
streets of Glendale before he was
placed in our Foster Program last
May. He spent the first few weeks of
his life fostered by PHS staff where he
socialized with his other littermates
and quickly won the hearts of staff.
Little did this pup know, he would
soon find his forever home with Bryn
Burke and her family.
“He has been to Tahoe three times,
has traveled in a private plane, on a
boat and in a ‘weekend car’,” says
Bryn. “He comes to work with me,
and when my daughters don’t steal
him off my bed, he sleeps with me
every night.”
“No one can live without cuddling
him,” Bryn adds. When one of her
daughters came down with strep
throat, Traylor stayed by her side
and kept her company. Bryn’s par-
ents even “borrow” him from time
to time where he enjoys sleeping
in their bed and cuddling on their
couch, too.
Traylor was one of over 350 young
animals that found homes in our
Foster Program in 2014. The PHS
Foster Program relies on dedi-
cated foster volunteers to care
for orphaned kittens and puppies,
as well as families willing to open
their homes and hearts. Traylor has
become a beloved member of the
family thanks to Bryn.
