CHAPTER 2: NUTRITION -FOOD = basic need for all living things -Repair & replace damaged tissues -Build new cells -warms body -Build healthy body -Growth -Provides energy to body CLASSES OF FOOD Carbohydrates -Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen -Main source of energy -To provide energy to body -Plants: form supporting structure (cell walls) -Sugar, starch, cellulose Ex: Rice, potato, sugar, bread & banana -Plants: Complex starch -Animals: Glycogen Protein Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen *sulphur, phosphorus -Growth of new cells -repair damaged body tissues -to build enzymes, hormones, haemoglobin & antibodies -Excess are excreted from the body as urea in the urine Fish, milk, meat, egg whites & nuts (groundnuts & soya beans) -Lack of protein: kwashiorkor Fats -Carbon, hydrogen & oxygen -supply energy & warmth -heat insulator to reduce heat loss from body -protect internal organs(kidney & heart) -Dissolve vitamins A, D, E, K Plant fats: margarine, coconut oil, olive oil, peanut oil Animal fats: butter, egg yolk, ghee, milk *Animal fats have higher cholesterol Vitamins -organic compound -maintain good health -protect body from diseases -Vitamin B & C = soluble in water -Vitamin A, D, E, K = Soluble in fats *refer to table Minerals/mineral salts -inorganic substances -needed in small quantities -maintain the health of body -MORE calcium phosphorus iron, iodine, sodium & fluorine
