Page 30 – North Central News, February 2013 SCHOOL DAYS District awards laud outstanding effort By Kaci Demarest Recipients of the Achievement Above All awards from Sunnyslope High School were honored at the Glendale Union High School district office Jan. 8. Each year, one student, teacher, sup- port staff, student group, and volunteer are honored for their work in going above and beyond. This year, the student recipient was senior Kirsten Linnartz. Linnartz is the vice president of the Key Club and National Honor Society, a member of the Spanish Honor Society, and a three-sport varsity athlete in cross country, track and tennis. In addition, she has received multiple awards for her achievements in the field of science. “I was really honored to represent Sunnyslope at the awards because this award is so prestigious,” Linnartz said. The outstanding student group was Key Club, a campus service group with more than 100 members, operating under the umbrella of the Sunnyslope Kiwanis Club. Key Club works with numerous organizations around the Valley such as St. Vincent de Paul and Desert Mission Food Bank. Some of the annual activities include adopting a fam- ily for the holidays, trick-or-treating for UNICEF, and making Valentine’s Day cards for residents at Madison Meadows retirement home. “I am extremely proud of the Key Club for winning the AAA award. We have organized many activities this year and the participation has been fantas- tic,” said Adviser Tom Birk. Special Education Teacher Tiffany Graff was the teacher recipient this year. Graff teaches the Special Education class on campus, assisting with special needs students. “The thing I find most rewarding about teaching Special Ed is when a student comes up to us after they’ve made it through something they never thought possible,” Graff said. Bookstore Manager Nayla Olvey accepted the Outstanding Support Staff award. “I was shocked to get the award this year. It’s the most rewarding thing to have your peers recommend you like this,” Olvey said. Parent Volunteer Kevin Hanson was honored as well. Hanson is the president of the Sunnyslope Grid Iron Football Club, which is responsible for all funds and advertising for the foot- ball club. He also assists with multiple student organizations on campus. “It’s a real honor and privilege to be able to serve ‘Slope and the kids,” Hanson said. Recipients of the AchievementAbove All awards from SunnyslopeHigh School were honored at theGlendale Union High School districtoffice Jan. 8.

Williams from Sunnyslope School.Ramirez, who plays basketball and thetrumpet, was applauded for always beingon task, and for being a diligent workerwho sets high expectations for himselfwhile still making time to help others inhis classes. Williams is a scholar athlete,maintaining a 4.0 GPA and membershipin the National Junior Honor Societywhile playing on the volleyball, basket-ball and softball teams.

Also recognized were VanessaLeonardo, seventh grade, and Jose “AJ”Herrera, eighth grade, from MountainView School. Leonardo was noted forher friendly demeanor, her drive anddetermination. Hererra was praised forhis leadership skills as part of theMountain View Community ActionTeam, and for the community servicehe performs as part of that team.

Perla Vazquez Aguilar, a fifth graderfrom Desert View Elementary, wasapplauded for maintaining straight A’sand being on the Principal’s List. She isvery conscientious, listening and takingnotes and setting high expectations forherself.

From Royal Palm Middle School,seventh grader Angie Mercado andeighth grader Kishor Acharya were high-lighted. Mercado, who excels in math,reading and science, is always willing tohelp other students and even helps heryounger sister with her homework. Shealso loves acting and hopes to pursue acareer in that field some day.

Acharya moved to Phoenix fromNepal just last year and already hasadvanced to taking freshmen-levelAlgebra. He is quick to smile and easy-going, as well as willing to participatein class and be a peer helper.

From Sunnyslope High School,

senior Savannah Blitch was honored.She sang in the school choir all fouryears, making it onto the VocalEnsemble Choir, and also participatedin theater for four years, earning her anHonor Thespian designation. An avidwriter and poet, she hopes to study inthe field of publishing while in college.From Central High, senior Octavio

GLENDALE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICTGUHSD receivesnational award

Glendale Union High SchoolDistrict has been named the CollegeBoard Advanced Placement Equity andExcellence District of the Year for beingthe nation’s leader among medium-sized school districts in simultaneouslyexpanding access to AdvancedPlacement Program (AP) courses andimproving AP Exam performance.

GUHSD students, teachers, districtand school administrators, local publicofficials, and College Board memberscelebrated these achievements duringan award ceremony on Jan. 16.

In November 2012, Glendale wasone of a record 539 school districts

Aaron Edgington was recognized. Amember of the school’s Speech andDebate Team, as well as the DiversityLeadership Alliance, Edgington carriesa 4.4 GPA and is in the top 2 percentof his class. He hopes to study politicalscience and has applied to DukeUniversity, Vanderbilt University andother out-of-state schools.

Also recognized at the luncheonwere two high school students whowere the lone January Students of theMonth. From Central High, MirandaHowell was described as being a quietstudent who puts her head down andgets it done, whether class work orplaying on the school’s basketball, soft-ball and volleyball teams. She hopes toattend Dixie State College of Utah tostudy criminology in order to become acrime scene investigator.

Ana Hernandez Rodriguez, a seniorat Sunnyslope High, was praised for herwork outside of the classroom, includingserving as a member of the Key Club forfour years and being a member of theFuture Educators of America Club, as

well as and teaching math to refugee stu-dents during summer school. She willattend Phoenix College in the fall andthen transfer to Arizona State University.

From this list,three AP Districts of the Year wereselected, one for each category of dis-trict population size (small, medium,large). Among school districts withmedium-sized populations, Glendaleachieved higher increases in AP partici-pation and performance than any otherdistrict in the United States.

During the period from 2009 to2012, the Glendale Union High SchoolDistrict:

• Increased student participation inAP by 15 percent annually;

• Increased the percentage of APstudents earning a 3 or above on at leastone AP Exam by 14 percent annually,with 51 percent of their AP studentsscoring 3 or above in 2012; and

• Increased the percentage of tradi-tionally underserved minority AP stu-dents earning a 3 or above on at leastone AP Exam by 21 percent annually—an increase of 142 students last year.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches,which only eat non-living plant materi-als, were brought to the classroom todiscuss the natural recycling on livingand non-living materials in the envi-ronment. The island of Madagascar wasstudied by looking at plant life, animallife and island living.

Two brave volunteers even heldroaches, “Maddy” and “May,” to walkthem around the classroom for studentsto get a closer look.

Students’ art toappear in calendar

Madison Simis Elementary hadthree third-grade winners for the annu-al Valley Metro Bus Contest. MollyBissa, Grace Wright and Corin Friesewill have their artwork featured in adesktop calendar that is distributedthroughout the city.

Valley Metro came to Simis in lateDecember to present the winners withprize packages. More than 300 studentsentered from schools throughout theValley, so it was quite an accomplish-ment to be selected.

They received their artwork backframed, a certificate, and a prize pack-age that included a set of art supplies.

Park students donateto homeless shelterThe fourth grade students of GregoryPatrick at Madison Simis Elementaryreally demonstrated a giving heartwhen they donated almost 100 toiletryitems for Cass Homeless Shelter.

Camelback Principal Chad Gestsonwas named one of seven winners for the2013 Rodel Exemplary Principal Award.As part of the award, he will receive a$2,500 stipend and mentor three aspir-ing educators for two school years start-ing with the 2013-14 school year.

The winners were selected “for theirability to inspire their staffs to con-tribute to school-wide success and thedevelopment of a campus that is highachieving, safe, orderly and welcom-ing,” according to the RodelFoundation. Exemplary Principals pro-vide professional development andmentoring to Rodel Aspiring Principals,creating a pipeline for educators whoeventually can lead high-need schools.

“Our greatest source of pride is ourcampus climate,” Geston said. “Whenstudents feel happy, safe and chal-lenged, and the adults on campus arerespected, trusted and viewed as leadersin the change process, then the envi-ronment is ripe for improvement.”

Athletes get advicefrom former Celtic

The Central Bobcat Basketballteam, along with other Central ath-letes, recently got the chance to listento NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell.

The Boston Celtic superstar spokeabout how as an athlete and a student itis better to “understand, than be under-stood.” Russell pointed out to the stu-dents that he was cut from the juniorvarsity team when he was in high school,

but the varsity coach mentored him untilhe was ready for the next season.

Russell used experiences from hislife to explain to the students that theycouldn’t just rely on only athleticism;they needed to be a “complete pack-age.” He wanted the students to feelconfident that there is a field whereeach student has a chance to succeed.He said finding that field comes onlyfrom education.

Russell also spoke about his careerhighlights, including his 11 NBAChampionships. He pointed out a pairof Nike basketball shoes one of the stu-dents was wearing and said, “I’ll justput it this way, I was the guy MichaelJordan wanted to be like.”

He spoke to them about harnessingthe motivation and drive they all feel asathletes and applying to their studies.Russell stressed that while basketballwas his passion, it did not come easy tohim. He learned to be a great defensiveplayer simply because he “could notshoot.” By the time he got to theBoston Celtics in 1956, Russell said hehad practiced three hours a day, sevendays a week for seven years.

Central gets visitfrom sister school

Central High was visited on Jan. 14by students and teacher-chaperones fromits sister school in Costa Rica. The visit,from the Santa Maria de GuadalupeHigh School, was sponsored by theGlobal Studies magnet program.

Central already had visitors fromJapan in the fall semester, and contin-gents from China and Mexico are com-ing in the spring. Members of theGlobal Studies magnet program alsovisited Japan during fall break, and willgo to Costa Rica in the spring. Formore information on the GlobalStudies magnet, call 602-764-7569.

North gets fundingfor robotics contest

The North Robotics Club is ready toroll into its spring competition seasonwith a bonus—the needed funding neces-sary to compete. Boeing awarded a$5,000 FIRST@Boeing grant to theteam, the first year that North has beenawarded a grant from a corporate sponsor.

In addition to being awarded thefunds, Boeing provides the team men-torship through one or more of itsemployees who become an official partof the team. Three teachers in the WashingtonElementary School District recentlyearned National Board Certification(NBC), an advanced teaching creden-tial that is the highest level of distinc-tion a classroom teacher can achieve.Among them were Erin Johnson, firstgrade teacher at Mountain ViewSchool, and Leslie Perry, kindergartenteacher at Richard E. MillerElementary.

WESD has the fifth-greatest num-ber of NBC teachers in the state. Theirdedication to their profession and theirdesire to achieve at the highest level areindicative of the passion for teachingfound throughout the WESD.

Johnson and Perry were among 107in Arizona to receive certification thisyear and among 4,980 teachers nation-wide. To earn National BoardCertification, teachers demonstratetheir knowledge and skills through ayearlong series of performance-basedassessments, including a portfolio oflessons and samples of student work,

Congresswomanvisits Sunnyslope

Rep. Kirsten Sinema, who representsArizona District 9, paid a special visit toSunnyslope School on Dec. 19. Sinemais a former employee of the WashingtonElementary School District, beginningher career out of college as a social work-er at Sunnyslope.

Sinema worked in WESD for sevenyears before becoming a lawyer, a lob-byist and then later a member of theArizona Legislature. She took the oathof office on Jan. 3.

Sinema visited with eighth-grade stu-dents for nearly an hour, sharing her per-sonal story and then answering students’questions. Students asked Sinema’s opin-ions on a variety of issues from immigra-tion and SB 1070 to gun control andhow to balance the federal budget.

Sinema ended her visit by signing theschool’s “no-bullying” sign that was setto be installed after the winter recess.

Xavier College Preparatory will part-ner with the Ira A. Fulton Schools ofEngineering at Arizona State Universityto host its fifth-annual “Girls Have ITDay” on Friday, March 1, from 1 p.m. to3 p.m.

Developed by Xavier students andfaculty, “Girls Have IT Day” promotesyoung women’s involvement in science,information technology (IT), engineer-ing, art and math (STEAM). Morethan 400 middle school girls fromaround the Phoenix metropolitan areawill participate in the event, along withmore than 100 Xavier students whowill mentor the younger studentsthroughout the day.

The program will begin with a lec-ture by Xavier alumna EmilyWeissinger, an associate with ENVI-RON International Corporation.Afterward, students will participate in ahands-on, STEAM-focused activity fairhosted by members of Xavier’s variousstudent clubs.

Brophy soccer finishessecond in national tourney

Brophy College Preparatory’s soccerteam, the No. 1-ranked high schoolsoccer team in Arizona, recentlyreturned from the Montverde AcademySoccer Tournament in Orlando, Fla.,where eight of the top programs in thecountry—including nationally rankedteams from Florida, Texas, Arizona andMississippi—were invited to partici-pate in a winner-take-all nationalchampionship event.

Brophy, then ranked No. 16 in thecountry, faced No. 28 AmericanHeritage-Delray in the quarterfinals, andcoasted to a 4-0 win courtesy of twogoals from senior Riggs Lennon, and oneeach from seniors Colin Jackson andOliver Shanks. In the semifinals, Brophytook on undefeated Boca Raton—theNo. 1 team in the nation—in a fast-paced and exciting match between twowell-respected soccer programs. Onceagain, Brophy prevailed 2-0, thanks togoals from Lennon and senior DavidLane and great defending from seniorgoalkeeper Michael O’Connor and

senior defenders Clarence Clark, ColinZaccagnio and Justice Kelly.

In the championship game, Brophymet the No. 2-ranked team in thenation, tournament host MontverdeAcademy, in a televised game before asellout crowd in a soccer-only stadiumwith music blaring, fireworks, andmore than 30 college coaches in atten-dance. Montverde currently holds thenation’s longest undefeated streak—56games —and fields a team of SouthAmerican, Caribbean and Canadiansoccer players, several of whom play fortheir respective youth national teams.

In an exciting final, Brophy took thelead on a fantastic goal from Lennon,but Montverde tied the game just beforehalftime, and added two goals late in thesecond half to win, 3-1.

Lennon was awarded the “GoldenBoot” as the top scorer in the tourna-ment, and O’Connor and Clark joinedLennon on the “All Tournament” team.Brophy’s national ranking has nowclimbed to No. 8, and the Broncoshead into the Arizona state high schooltournament as the team to beat.
