IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR CALENDAR
School Website: www.glenroywestps.vic.edu.au
2020 Term Dates Term 1- 28th January- 27th March Term 2- 14th April -26th June Term 3 -13th July- 18th September Term 4- 5th October- 18th December ……………………………………………………………………………. Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Please mark in your diary School Photos will now take place on Monday 14th September, 2020 Dear Parents and Guardians, A warm welcome back to Term 2. Week 1 and 2, 2020 has certainly been like no other week of a school term. A school without many students, teachers, families and community members is put simply a sad one. Having said that, I am so proud of every member of the school community. I applaud all GW parents, guardians and carers and acknowledge the very high number of you who have taken on board flexible and remote learning from home. In doing so you have been able to comply with the Victorian Government and DET expectation that the majority of students will learn from home during Term 2. For those small number of families who cannot work from home and, have no other possibilities for the supervision of their children, the school has to remain open in a limited capacity to provide for and support your child/children.

School Vision - Inspire, Grow, Achieve
The challenge for families of course are significant and will vary due to circumstances but, to all of you who are-
Striving to work from home and as possible to engage with your
child/children and their learning
Undertaking study at home whilst again, trying to engage with the learning
activities
Undertaking all of the usual necessary at home other activities/childcare etc
for any preschool aged children
Attempting to carry out your own homework ( paid employment online)
General wading through the so many other corona- inspired stresses
You are most definitely on the front line and whatever circumstances or
category you are in please give yourself a huge “ pat on the back’ and,
remember we are all in this together and doing the best we can.
Please also remember:
The school day is not something that can be or, should be replicated in the
home exactly and please don’t feel compelled to try to do this
Parents do not need to become teachers
Having said that, you of course have been a teacher throughout your life
and will continue to be so as they grow and develop
The overall goal with regard to the work being outlined for the children at
home is that all children log on at 9am to receive the outline for the day
As far as possible the children should be able to self- manage their learning
even in the Foundation to two level to a degree
There will be issues, challenges, problems, good and bad days but, the
experts tell us that adversity builds character when it is experienced in a
secure and loving family unit
Resilience, something we often speak about at Glenroy West encapsulates
the notion that we all need to learn that we can fall over and get up again-
Jacqueline May pointed out in her article ’Childhood Lost in Lockdown’
(Sunday Age April 12th)
Appropriately that at this time the falling over and getting up is on a large
scale.
Moving Forward: As we move ahead towards the engagement of teachers and students via WebEx the priority will be learning together and gaining confidence with the use of this tool as well as, engaging with the suggested timetable and daily outline provided by the teachers. My sincere thanks to every member of GWPS staff who have been working literally around the clock planning, communicating, researching, training and collaborating to ensure DET expectations and a wide range of legislation including health and safety, child safety and privacy are being adhered to. We have also been working to a roster to timetable volunteer teachers to provide for students on site. Daily for
the student son site, GW teachers and support staff are carrying out their role and, attempting to teach and work with their teams as well.

ANZAC DAY – Saturday 25th April 2019 LEST WE FORGET ANZAC DAY will be commemorated on Saturday April 25th. I believe there will be organisations and people across the country signifying the dawn service in different ways. I have asked the staff to ensure we acknowledge and commemorate the significance of the day with students and their families in their daily teaching and learning especially in the 3-6 area.
MATHLETICS & READING EGGS Please ensure your child is logging onto these programs provided free by the school- Mathletics and Reading Eggs Glenroy West is providing free membership to Mathletics and Reading Eggs for all students for use both in the classroom and at home. Both Mathletics and Reading Eggs, are award winning programs and exceptional tools in promoting increased confidence, understanding and enjoyment of Mathematics and Reading in our students. Mathletics is an important resource in our classroom programs. Teachers receive a great deal of useful data regarding individual student’s participation and progress through the different topics completed both at school and home. Teachers can individualise each program to suite each student’s ability, interests and learning requirements. Parents can ensure that your children gets the most out of Mathletics by:
Taking an active role in your child’s learning progress
Encourage your child to use Mathletics at least 3-5 times each week
Encourage a balance between the full curriculum and Mathletics live
Encourage your child to complete activities that challenge, rather than those
he/she finds easy
If the level your child is working at is too easy, speak to the class teacher
about setting a different default level for your child
Celebrate your child success, print the certificates out and display them at
home.
For more information on Mathletics check the website or speak to your child’s teacher.
SCHOOL PHOTOS Please place Monday 14th September in your diary for school photos, followed by sibling and group photos. Enjoy the weekend, Take care and stay safe Pam & Staff.

OSHClub begins at Glenroy West Primary School on Monday 4th May
Operating Hours Before School Care 6.45am to 8.45am After School Care 3.15pm to 6.00pm
Information regarding free care during Coronavirus pandemic Dear Glenroy West PS Parents, Earlier this month the Morrison Government announced that Australian families in need of child care will receive
free care during the coronavirus pandemic. This is fantastic news for our families that need us the most and is in
place to ensure we can care for children of parents working in essential service roles and to support vulnerable
children. In addition, it will support the early childhood education and care sector to remain viable and to survive
these challenging times to ensure we are ready to support our communities as normality returns following COVID
-19.
What is does this relief package mean? 1. Families will receive free child care during the Coronavirus pandemic. You as a parent/ guardian will not be charged for any care sessions during the pandemic for an initial 3 month period (up until June 30th). This will be in effect at GWPS from our planned start date of Monday May 4th 2020 and will be reflected in your next statement. 2. OSHClub will remain open and ready to care for our families and school communities Where possible, we will be opening our services for our usual care offerings – before and after school care. This means that you will be able to book your child in for care at your local OSHC service, with your friendly OSHC team.
Is it safe to come to OSHC? Yes! In all of our services, we have and will continue to reinforce excellent hygiene and cleaning practices as well as adjusting our programming to maximise outside play and social distancing. We have also initiated our specific COVID-19 Risk Minimisation plans for our services and will be strictly enforcing our Illness and Infectious Diseases policy. At OSHClub, the health and safety of the children and our team is our top priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our friendly Customer Service and Billing Team on 1300 395 735.
ALL BOOKINGS ARE TO BE MADE DIRECTLY WITH OSHClub.
Ring 1300 395 735 or visit oshclub.com.au All the best from the OSHClub team.
