By KAITLYN GILLESPIEOver 250 of the best voices in
Kansas joined together to sing forthe state Kansas Music Educator’sAssociation in Wichita on Feb. 24.One of those voices was DecaturCommunity High’s very own JennyHirsch.
Jenny is the daughter of Anita andSteve Hirsch and a senior at Oberlin.Jenny was selected through districtauditions, held in Hays last Novem-ber. This was Jenny’s second yearto attend the state Kansas MusicEducator’s Association event. When asked what she thought of theexperience, she said, “It was awe-some! I wish I could have gotten inmy sophomore year.”
Jeffrey Redding, from South Or-ange High School in Orlando, Fla.,conducted the group of 265 talentedvoices. “I loved him,” said Jenny.“He was so funny, and he took timeout of our rehearsals to let us tell himabout ourselves.”
This state event is not only a funtime, but a learning experience foreveryone. Jenny said she learned tothink about what the composer wasthinking and directing, and realized
it is so much more than standingthere and waving his or her hands upand down; it’s an emotion.
At the end of the group’s three-day practices, they gave a perfor-mance with the state Kansas MusicEducator Association band. Ac-cording to Jenny, “The performancewent really well…. Singing for 15hours was the hardest. It’s crazy dif-ficult, and you have to learn how topace yourself so you don’t lose yourvoice for the concert!”
At the performance the groupsang “Praise to the Lord,” “SitivitAnimea Mea,” “Rockin’ Jerusa-lem,” “Kaki Lambe,” “Dicite inGentibs,” and “I Will Lift Up MineEyes.”
“You feel like a small fish in a bigpond,” Jenny said. “You are defi-nitely humbled by the amazingvoices all around you. The directorswere awesome. There are peoplethere that share your love and pas-sion for music, and it obviouslyshows in the rehearsals and the con-cert. No one does anything halfway;they’re all there to sing and singwell, which I know I will miss. I al-ready do!”

By MARCI METCALFWhen you think of eighth notes,
quarter notes, or treble clef, youmight think of band. Band is hardenough when you play one instru-ment; imagine playing three.
Eighth grader Katie Gladingplays the trombone, saxophoneand piano.
Katie started playing the trom-bone in fifth grade. After hearingher mom play the saxophone, shedecided she wanted to play it.
For music contest this year,Katie decided to challenge her-self. She played two solos, “Isa-bella” on trombone and “Char-treuse” on saxophone. She re-ceived I ratings on both at the jun-ior high music festival.
But Katie’s musical accom-plishments don’t end there. Shealso took piano and vocal solos tothe festival. She earned a II+ onboth solos. The eighth grademixed vocal ensemble she is amember of also earned a II. Thatgave her a total of two I ratings andthree II ratings.
But there is still more. Katie isalso a member of a saxophone en-semble and a brass ensemble, and, of course, the junior highchoir and band. All of thosegroups earned I ratings. That’s atotal of six Is and three IIs.
In fact, Katie was so busy at thefestival that she was the firstOberlin student to perform thatday, beginning at 8:07 a.m. withher vocal solo, and the last to per-form with the brass ensemble at4:17 that afternoon. She hadseven performances between thetwo.
Katie said she likes playing thesaxophone better than the trom-bone, and she practices both dur-ing and after school. She alsolikes reading and sports. Katie’sfavorite book is “Ink Heart” by C.Funke, and her favorite sport isvolleyball.
“We have quite a few studentswho play two instruments, butKatie is pretty exceptional,” saidinstrumental instructor ChristieMorris.
