TERM 1 WEEK 4 21 FEBRUARY 2019

GEORGE STREET, BERKELEY, 2506 | P 42711171 | E [email protected]

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The term has begun very smoothly thanks to the hard work of all the staff at Berkeley Public School. All students are very settled in their new classes and are always engaged in their learning whenever I visit the classrooms. It has been really appreciated over the last few weeks that all classrooms are air conditioned. We have had some extremely hot, humid weather in February, and these have helped maintain our classrooms to optimise learning.

Kindergarten look fantastic in their new uniforms and are enjoying their learning time in the class and time in the playground. I would like to thank the Year 6 buddies who gave up their lunchtimes to help the new students settle into our school. This is a feature of our school where students do kind deeds for others – Kindness on Purpose.

We continue to plan and improve the teaching at our school. This year in our release from face to face program students will be learning from the Science syllabus which fosters in students a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them and how it works. Science encourages students to embrace new concepts, the unexpected and to learn through trialing, testing and refining ideas. Each class will spend one semester learning about science with Mrs Shephard and then the other semester in the kitchen/garden. All classes will have one session in the library each week.

Student Leaders & SRC Induction Assembly Our leadership Induction Assembly was held today, where our 2019 school leaders; Anthony Stevceski, Eva Nyers-Saunders, Micah Leimbach and Zaleigh Hart, Sports Captains and SRC students were officially acknowledged by the school community and received their badges. Students and family members were treated to afternoon tea in the kitchen after the event.

Meet the Teacher Over this week classroom teachers presented an information session to parents explaining how your child’s classroom operates. This was a good opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, and find out about upcoming excursions, units of work being taught, homework and special programs that may be happening throughout the year. During the year if you have any questions about the classroom program or concerns for your child it is best to make an appointment with the teacher to discuss this. Our staff are more than happy to work through any issues you may have to make your child’s experience at our school a positive one.

Clean Up Australia On Friday 1 March all students at Berkeley Public School will be helping to keep our school and local community clean by picking up rubbish. Classes will be supervised by their teachers in designated areas after Lunch 2. All students are to bring their hats and disposable gloves. The school will supply disposable gloves to any child who does not have a pair.

Swimming Carnival Well done to all the competitors who did their best at our annual swimming carnival held at Berkeley swimming pool. It was very uplifting seeing so many of our students show perseverance and determination. I was very proud of all our swimmers.

The District Carnival is being held today and we wish all our competitors the best of luck. There will be a full report in the next newsletter about our successful students.

A big thank you to Mr Dobinson and his helpers for organising our swimming carnival and the District carnival. Volunteers If parents and carers have any spare time during their day you are most welcome to come and help in your child’s classroom with reading and numeracy programs, or during sport time. There are forms you will need to fill out before working in the classroom and the office staff can help you with these. Breakfast Club Breakfast Club operates every day (Monday to Friday) from 8.30am to 8.50am. Students who would like to have breakfast at school must attend as soon as they arrive. A big thank you to Margaret and Michelle Clifford for running this program every day.

Emergency Contact Details If you have changed your phone number or address, please advise the school immediately so we can update our records.

P & C Meeting The next P & C meeting will be held on Monday 4 March at 6.00pm in the staff room. All parents, especially our new parents are welcome to attend and show their support for their child’s school. This is an extremely hardworking group who support the school tirelessly and extra help is always welcomed.

Reminder about end of day pickup times We thank the many parents, grandparents and community members who are here to pick students up at 3pm each afternoon. There have been a few occasions lately when an adult has not arrived to pick up students or informed the school of them being late or made alternate arrangements. The office staff finish shortly after the bell and often teachers have to attend meetings related to their professional learning or committees that develop and monitor programs throughout the school. We would appreciate if all students could be picked up on time. Kind Regards Wayne Osborne Principal

TERM 1 WEEK 4 21 FEBRUARY 2019

GEORGE STREET, BERKELEY, 2506 | P 42711171 | E [email protected]

Wagolls Jubborsay have been learning to write character descriptions. Here are some examples of our work: Silly Steve By Margret Kewa Plop! Yes that’s Silly Steve. He has orange, thick, curly and very crazy hair. His face is painted white with long, purple stripes. His huge black eyebrows look really scary but he is the nicest clown on earth. Now for his wide happy smile, when Steve smiles his eyes look very nice and his lips look really red. His red nose is as red as a rose. Steve’s big silly shoes look funny. Steve’s shirt is really green and he has a rainbow bow tie. His pants are a royal blue and they have green spots. Funny Fred by Riley Stepto Funny Fred is very mean and he stinks like a smelly slug. His neon green hair is made from silky string. He works at Jumbo’s Jumping Circus. Fred has a hot pink t-shirt and a bright orange polka dotted bow tie. He has blue lipstick and a purple nose that is as dark as night. He looks as old as an 80-year-old man. Mr Samson by Will Stoker Mr Samson liked to dance but he was an alien! He had green skin and his eyes were as big as the Earth. His hair is as red as blood. He has eight spider legs and he shoots spider webs that are as strong as a rhino. Banging Billy by Emily Nyers-Saunders Banging Billy has blue pants, a red hat and an orange t-shirt with huge purple shoes. He works at Little Seventy Circus. He is very silly and has a toy bat that he bangs into walls. He likes to jump up and down and sing very loud. He laughs a lot when he rides his one wheeled bike. He has a very cute cat and when he finishes his act, he throws candy at the kids.

Personal Learning Pathways (PLP’s) In Week 7 from 12 March to 15 March, Berkeley Public School will be working with our Aboriginal students to conduct Personal Learning Pathways (PLPs). A PLP is designed to build on students’ personal strengths and needs to develop specific learning goals for Literacy and Numeracy. Teachers will be meeting with their Aboriginal students on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to talk about their families, where they are from, their mob, interests, responsibilities and what they are deadly at. Berkeley Public School encourages all Aboriginal families to talk to their child about their mob and their culture to form their identity. Miss Quintal will be meeting with all Aboriginal students on Monday, 11 March during lunch time to talk to students about the importance of their PLP. In Term 2, a barbeque will be held for Aboriginal families to meet with their child’s teacher to talk about their individual goals. Amber Quintal and Georgia Garling

Sport News- Term 1 Well done to all our swimming competitors who represented our school with pride at the school carnival in Week 2. Our four houses of Lawson, MacKellar, Paterson and Kendall all did fantastic jobs in the pool and also cheering on their fellow competitors. 30 of these students will now progress onto the district carnival which is being held Friday 22 February at Berkeley Pool. Ribbons, winning house and age champions awards will be presented during our first regular school assembly on Thursday in Week 5. This term’s Gala Days are scheduled for Weeks 8 and 9 and the sports being played are mixed netball and cricket. During sport on Friday’s, students will have the chance to nominate themselves to attend these days. Teams will be selected on the basis of their willingness to follow our school values and also their ability and drive to improve in that chosen sport. Our Cross-Country Carnival will be scheduled later this Term so keep an eye out for those dates and get training! Jack Dobinson
