“Reaching for the Heights”
SPRING FAIR
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Some more Spring Fair photos, with a great one of Mr Legione who enjoyed his last Spring Fair! Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a wonderful day.
At our last School Council meeting we enjoyed a special visit from some members of our Junior School Council. This was an opportunity for Mr Bruce Lee, our School Council President, to explain the role of School Council but more importantly, to hear the ideas, plans and achievements of our student representatives. Junior School Council is one avenue through which student voice and student leadership can be an authentic part of school decision making. School Council was impressed with the confidence, maturity and responsibility shown by these young leaders. The students explained the process that takes place when electing Junior School Council representatives and emergencies in the Year 2 – Year 6 classes. They talked about how a ‘suggestion box’ is used in their class, with the suggestions being presented for discussion at JSC meetings. Some of their recent ideas such as lunch time clubs (Lego), extra lunchtime library for Years 5 and 6 and reinstatement of the ‘Active Library’ to borrow sports equipment, have already been implemented. Many other interesting ideas were suggested to School Council some of which may be introduced in 2019. Although the introduction of some ideas such as the installation of a soft drink machine and security cameras in the toilets are highly unlikely! The Junior School Council members also talked about their role in promoting special events such as the Easter raffle, the Colour Run and the Day for Daniel. Their viewpoint was also sought when determining the new school values and in discussing the ‘playground values awards’ system. Thank you to the JSC students and their parents who made this visit possible and to Mrs Stacy Brookes for her organisation and support of Junior School Council throughout the year. Cath Buckland
