School Council Members 2014 - 2015
Our school council is made up from two children out of every class. Each year we nominate
ourselves and are voted in by our classmates. We work extremely hard to ensure our pupils
have a voice within our school and support the staff and the Headteacher. We enjoy
fundraising and ensuring our school is health school and environmentally friendly.
Our first project this year was to review the behaviour policy, which involved working
closely with the senior management team and the governors to decide on a policy that
would work for both the children and the staff.
The school council had the special job of naming each of the new zones and writing the
behaviour steps in each cloud. In order to achieve this we listened to each other’s ideas
until we unanimously agreed on names that suited each of these steps. We then ensured
the text could be understood by every child.
We felt very strongly that the children should have more time to talk to their teachers about
issues and feelings on a one to one basis. They should be given the opportunity to recover
their behaviour and think about their choices before returning to their task. We believe that
the new system accommodates this.
In addition to this we also thought that linking golden time to our behaviour policy was
unfair and would only make children worry about issues all week rather than concentrating
on their work. We asked that this be taken out of the behaviour system and the staff
listened to our suggestion.
Deciding on how to present the policy was quite an easy task as we simply decided to
incorporate last year’s school councillor’s idea to use our school logo which we are really
very proud of.
Together we have produced a policy which not only incorporates our school aim and values
but also encourages us to talk about our feelings when children move to every step on the
cloud.
As the policy is new we suggested we should have a display in the corridor as well as smaller
ones in our pencil cases. After all we use our pencil cases all day and felt this would be a
good reminder for us all.

Attendance Policy
Our second project was to review the attendance policy.
Again we built upon the achievements of last year’s school councillors but we felt the
changes needed were very minimal.
We decided that it would be helpful for each child to have a copy in their pencil case. So we
chose to use the school logo again and mirror our behaviour system.
The policy includes reminders of our school attendance target, rewards that we receive and
information on percentages and how much learning time is missed if we have time off
school. This works very well as a constant reminder for us all.
